Geek Chic

“Am I going to s**t on my idols?”

Well…..no. Neither am I here to praise, grumble or even give you hardcore updates on our beautiful game. My purpose is to bring you a more relaxed weekly Sunday diary looking into the weekly life of an EvoGeek. And heres what I found.

 Subject Number 1 - Myself

I walk to and from my mundane 9 to 5 and while on the way I drift off, in deep thought about my beloved custom Staffordshire United team. As you fellow obsessives know, when that negotiation period comes round you get to fall in love with a number of signings all over again. Bored as I am on my walk I find myself drifting deeper, even talking to these players in my head preparing them for Man United away. Then when im in full drift I then take my unhealthy geek obsession to the extreme by having full blown press conferences and being vocal about my squad/promotion chances/whether i’ll sign a new contract.

Subject 2 - The Family Man

I never told that to anyone but my friend Chris and, nervously waiting for his reaction do you know what he said? Keep taking the pills? Get help dude? Not quite. I think his exact words were: “Thank F**K im not the only one” and he proceeded to spin off about driving to work and constantly having to defend his beloved Matuidi to the harsh, nasty press we’re forced to deal with on a daily basis (in our heads)

Subject 3 and 4 - The Social Whores

A lad i know was telling me back in the day he was at school and, not being bothered with the subject, proceeded to write a number of variations on his Newcastle United formation on the back of his work. What he didn’t realise was that he needed to hand it in at the end. 2 weeks detention was a bit harsh. (i’d have thanked him for giving me the tactics i needed to sort out my underperforming misfits but thats just me). My best friend also told me he can’t wait for his fiancee to go to her friends cos he gets to blast out Evo full volume while turning the commentators down and shouting out his own variations of what he assures me is professional commentary.

Subject 5 - The Celebritys

I got a call from a mate reading out an exert from Rio Ferdinands book. I’ll let the big man’s quote speak for itself : “Pro Evolution Soccer is our favourite when not in training. and I reckon i could easily get a job as a commentator as mine is unbelievable. On one particular time when me and Fletcher annihilated Rooney and Wezza we held a mock press conference and made them explain the problems between the two and to justify their poor performance while i filmed it on my mobile”

Geek Chic : Not for everyone………..but not so uncommon either. See you next week.

    Very odd!

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Brilliant!!!

  3. fully27 Says:

I echo your friend’s response. Something I’ve caught myself doing is questioning the desire of my players to really play when they’re good enough to get a first team start but just not with me. Sat on the bench every week and no grumbles?

Secondly, does anyone else join me in a general distaste for Minanda. Starts off captain, old, taking all the pens, free kicks etc. Undue arrogance in my opinion. Classic over paid over the hill foreigner. Just me?

  4. DM86 Says:

Only on the walk to work?? I do that kind of $hit at my desk. Can’t wait till the next installment, despite a majority of the news on PES09 in my opinion being slightly negative. I’ll still dedicate alot of hours, days, probably even months to taking my chosen team to Master League glory.

Not long to go now people … roll on October.

  5. Thom Says:

Wonderful, this means i’m not alone, haha. Press conferences “in my head” after every match is a part of the game ;)

  6. david learmont Says:

Glad to know i’m not the only one who commentates on my own matches!

I just can’t help it, i get so involved in the match it just comes out!

Great post and look forward to readng more.

  7. soooo Says:

so are u a chick or boy?

  8. nikicampos Says:

I stopped reading it in live five, what’s all of this new writers, they are like 4 or 5, so is there going to be a daily blog but from different people, not cool, what made this a great blog was Dan, and the fact that it was once a week, even if Dan wrote one daily that would suck, because it was a great reading once a week and it kept you waiting for the next week.

But, anyway, maybe some people liked the whole new idea of new writers.

  9. Franny Says:

not meaning to take the piss out of you here but you need help. its a game, rio done it for a laugh after beating his mates u did it out of sheer sadness, commentating ur match is ok especially when stevie g hits a 30 yarder in the last minute u have to go gerrrarrrrdddddd thats fine but seriously press conferences and all these ridiculous signing new contarcts and promotion, its the easiest game in the world u get up from d2 and stay there 4 life get a grip mate nothin wrong with likin a game but this is pathetic

  10. Chris The Family Man Says:

ha ha ha fantastic! I still laugh out loud now when I think of the time when Steve came into my office at work and said that he had just been having a heart to heart with his keeper about his recent drop in form!!! brilliant

Thing is though , I think if you don’t do this in your head then you are missing out on a brilliant part of being an evo fan. After a great win…… or loss, I love having a post match interview in my head whilst watching the players walk off the pitch and then waiting for the menu screen to load up.

Keeps you young and your imagination active.

Whilst driving to work nothing passes time better than talking to sky sports news in your head about how your season is going, which area’s of the team you are looking to strengthen, who have have been the form players in your side etc.

Great first blog mate, can’t wait for next weeks!!!

  11. PacMan Says:

    This column is genious!

I guess I’m one of those who discuss his team’s fortune with invisible journalists (sometimes, when I’m alone, eg. the shower, I actually do it out loud) and prepare/congratulate players before/after important matches. But then again, I’m plain weird.

My best mate is another Pro Evo junkie, and when we get together he provides match coverage and I handle the expert commentary. Truly remarkable, he’s great at it.

  12. betisfan Says:

mate, you are so right, thought i was looking at a reflection of myself! used to draw new team kits for my master league team in the back of my english book! settled on a lovely blue and white number in the end…………..
    @ fully27
agree with you on minanda, there are far better penalty and free kick takers in the team- jaric anyone? thought i’d give minanda a chance though by waiting for him to retire and signing him as a youngster so he could forge his own career in my team rather than me picking him up as an slow, old useless player. so far he’s 21 and coming along quite nicely, there may be hope for him after all!

  13. Jimbo Says:

I’d expect you nutters to flick the towel out you your imaginary players arses when you have a shower!

  14. assache Says:

I read it once, and read it again, what an idiot of a person you are. Get a life. Odd Ball

  15. has Says:

haha, this article is brilliant. the commentary bit is spot on. I do it when my mates are playing and they love it lol

  16. Interzone11 Says:

Do not listen to the negative comments. It completely flew over there heads. Why do we play games? Escapism, fantasy, etc. I just see your prose here as a higher evolution of the point these goons have missed. This is for fun, for the moment. The negativism I believe stems from the underdeveloped simply “missing the point”.

    looking forward to next weeks

  17. Steve From Stoke Says:

Thanks Interzone11. I knew it would be 50/50 response but i knew someone would get it. I was just providing a bit of humour through self deprecation and also to have a chuckle at the deprecation thrown back to be humourous. Ohhhhh the irony. :-) Thanks for “getting” it.

  18. nikicampos Says:

I just read it completely, WTF is wrong with you, 2 minutes of my life to the trash.

  19. MANDEM Says:

IS IT ME OR DOES ANYONE ELSE SCREAM THEIR HEAD OFF AT THE REF!!!

  20. Simon McDermott Says:

I do and I blame players for missing a pass or shooting wide.
“for ****s sake Rooney, WTF were you thinking”.
or For ****’s sake Scholes, that was ****e, even though it’s all totally my fault.

  21. dougiedonut Says:

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who does this sort of thing!
My mates think I’m a bit too obsessed with the game.

The sorts of things I do:

Tell people (including those who don’t play pes) about how i’ve taken on a managerial position with my new club, and how its not been going well. For example, I languished in Divion 2 for two seasons, as I wanted to win the league, not just come second and go straight up.
Naturally this meant I came in for some serious flak from the Chairman of the club, fans and the press.
Winning the Div 2 cup saved my job in those seasons.
But having battled all the way to win Div 2, bringing in fresh young talented players, I’ve created the platform for success for my 10 year game plan for the club.
General ML policy is to buy kids and turn them into serious players. We can’t afford big names, so we concentrate on nurturing talent.

Trying to keep 4 young strikers happy with only two positions is a challenge, but players know my policy.
If you’re scoring in every game, you play the next game (subject to stamina and health). If you don’t score by 60 mins, you’re liable to be subbed.
They respect the rules, and everyone gets on just fine.

  22. francis Says:

    Loved it DD :)

A very different approach to blogging, and one I enjoyed!

I do get annoyed when Gerrard hits a shot wide, even though I know it was me…

  23. assache Says:

Once again, someone posts under my tag (post 14). Never mind, I’ll simply change tag. Sad that someone has so little imagination that they have to nick someone else’s tag. Good idea with the email inclusion guys, really hope it helps put a stop to all the arseholes who only post on the site when they need info or option files.

Forgot to mention, ALex, your an arsehole. Ill change my tag, then watch

  25. francis Says:

Sorry to hear that Assache. I thought it was a little bit of an odd ‘assache’ post!

  26. Jasperinho Says:

Odd, but brilliant. Good to see that the “EvoGeek” community is so big and don’t mind the idiots that only seem to come to this site to express the frustrations in their lives anonymously.

I recognized loads of what I read and I could easily add a bunch of friends that would fit into the story too ;-)

Nice to see all those new bloggers out here. I will be looking forward to reading your blogs over the next few weeks.

  27. Marksman Says:

that was pure class, been laughing my ass off. I thought that I was the only nutter that did that ML madness with my lads… keep it up

  28. Chris The Family Man Says:

post 21 dougiedonut - brilliant I was laughing my ass off. I also have the same thoughts rationalising my performance to the chairman etc. Steve has himself as the founder aswell as manager of his staffs utd so wont have those isues, but prides himself on what the fans think!!!

Also on EVO 5 I had Nasri (now at Arsenal). He was a really good player but couldn’t get a regular place in the 1st team. However the fans really loved and respected him and he got Fans Player of the year as he always put in a really good performance and changed the game so many times having come on off the bench.

Also Interzone11 post 16 WELL SAID!!!

  29. assache Says:

Cheers Francis. Unfortunately for the idiots, most regulars on this site know the types of stuff I post.

  30. Simon McDermott Says:

I think you guys are all peice of ****s and I also think FIFA 09 will be better then PES 2009 !

    DAN YOU SUCK!

  31. Simon McDermott Says:

No F…ing way some bitch has posted under my tag.
You better hope i don’t find you mother chucka.
I think you guys know my hatred of Fifa runs so deep i would never post a thing like that.
Obviously a Fifa fan, that’s the mentalllity.

  32. Alex Says:

Hi Simon, Im a good friend of assache, or so i thought. he has been posting under your name to make it look like others have been doing it. He used to do this before, but got caught and kicked off another forum site.

    assache - Grow up kiddo.

  33. assache Says:

Alex & Simon. I can only imagine that you have now fallen foul to the same idiot I have. I have started adding my email to my posts, so that the guys running the site know what’s going on. I would suggest you guys do similar, it may help PESGaming get shot of these people.

  34. Alex Says:

Assache, If that the real assache, why don’t you just ignore it. Your foul language and very poor english is making everyone sick. Or better still get off this site.

  35. Osis Says:

I used to write down all the thoughts of press conferences en team performances on my website and made a whole story out of it. Sometimes I would rather read all of the story again in stead of just playing :-)

We EvoGeeks are a rare breed..

  36. Simon McDermott Says:

OK ok ill just stop kidding with you guys…..Noone is posting under my name its just me. I just really wanna tell you guys that this forum sucks tbh….FIFA 09 is clearly looking better come on now.

You damn idiots think PES is better?

  37. gelidus Says:

I will just ignore post 36.
Briliant article. “We are not alone” feeling feels pretty good.

  38. Simon McDermott Says:

Yeh right whoever Is posting under my name you are clearly retarded, people can tell whether it is me or or not, becaues I have made my views very clear in the past.
Thanks for the advice Alex, i will try not to respond to this idiots ranting in the future.
Assache if I add my Email address to my posts won’t who ever it is be able to start harassing through my Email address.
