PES off!! 21st August 2008
I’d like to start by thanking you all for your contributions to my new PES Off!! column,
I look forward to serving you up more topics to discuss - especially in the run up to the eventual launch of PES
in October.
So last week I covered topics on what we find annoying about PES, and this week I’d like to talk about
our online experiences of PES. My primary focus on online play is based on PES6 for two reasons:
1) I boycotted the purchase of PES2008. For me the game doesn’t exist! Especially since the online mode was broken.
2) PES6 online is still superb!
Anyway, This week I wanted to talk about the sorts of teams we play online with.
Personally I never use Brazil or Inter for games, for obvious reasons. In ranked games I used to pick England to do battle with national teams, but mostly that was because I was always up against a lot of Brazil players.
I always argue with mates that using the best team in the game is the easiest thing to do.
You’re always going to be fairing better with them against lesser players, especially if you’re a decent player.
Personally I like the underdog status. I prefer taking on the likes of Brazil with teams such as South Korea or Turkey.
I am pretty good at defending, so can nullify the impact of the likes of Adriano, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to a handful of chances between them. And at the same time, because I am user lesser known teams, people don’t know what to expect from them! Straight away their guard is down, since they think they’re going to win before a ball has been kicked.
And then I let them have it.
I should point out that this doesn’t always happen - I have had very good players beat me, but even then, I’ll make them work for that win.
My most enjoyable experiences with club teams have come with a team I’ve come to love called Constanti.
The number of times I’ve heard people whilst we’re picking teams say over their mic - “Constanti - who are they??”!
They’re a turkish club team, and I’ve beaten the likes of Real Madrid, Inter, Barca, Man Utd, Arsenal etc.
Its amazing the reactions you get from people when you beat them with a lesser known team.
I’d be interested in knowing whether anyone else does this sort of thing, or whether they tend to stick to the top teams to battle it out.
Which brings me on nicely to my next main point - quitters. When I first started playing online it would really bother me if people quit on me. I would work myself up about this, and be asking myself - why are these people playing online if they can’t accept the fact that they can’t win every match??
Surely everyone knows and can accept that they are not the best player at PES, and that they will have to take a beating once in a while? I don’t claim to be the best around, I know I’m not. What I can claim is that I will give anyone a good game, and make them earn that win against me.
But now, I am more philosophical about people quitting on me. I take it as a compliment. These quitters knew that they were outclassed by me, and the only thing they could do is quit. This has helped me to accept when people quit on me.
I would personally like to see a new system implemented to help combat quitters online.
If you quit more than 10 games (you have to allow for net disconnections), then you face an hour’s online ban.
20 games, and that’s a day’s ban - and so on, on some arbitrary scale. I think something like that would help
to make people think twice about quitting. I’d be interested to know what other schemes you guys can think of to help combat the curse of the quitters.
And for the record - my worst defeat was something like 9-1 (everything went wrong for me! own goals, silly defending - and the other guy was pretty good too!), and my best win has been something like 8-0.
I tend to try to not beat people by more than 4/5 goals, since this normally results in them quitting.
I would like to end this short post with a little anecdote - I once played against this kid, who was clearly out of his league playing against me, and I punished him by scoring at least 6 goals. But to his credit he kept on trying and trying, and didn’t quit on me. I even left a message for him saying he was a credit to the game for sticking it out
whilst knowing he was in for a spanking. Most people would have quit in those circumstances.
If there are any people out there reading this who have tendencies to quit - just remember - in every game you play where you are outplayed - think of it as a learning experience to help better your game.
Quitting whilst losing doesn’t improve your abilities.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers

I think I can kick your ass….you play on XBOX 360?
i like picking the lesser teams
one time i beat someone who woz spain with wales, 2-0
priceless
I completely agree with regard to the ‘bigger teams’ - but it does ruin the online side of the game to a degree. I mean; Adriano and Ibrahimovic are better than most, but are they really that much better? You can apply this to any team you like, but the research behind the player stats has been poor for a long time and the game engine just makes things worse.
Our online clan makes a point of involving the lesser-played teams in our competitions, and players rotate around the teams according to the fixtures in our competitions. (Last night we had a stonking Recreativo 3:3 Djurgardens cup game - you just don’t seem to get that as much with the ‘big’ teams.)
Something that I feel that you should really have mentioned in your article is how poor the online aspect of the game is compared to other products out there (not just in the football genre).
There is massive scope for improvement in this side of the game, both in terms of features available to the players and the overall quality of performance. PES2008 was a disgrace online, both in terms of implementation and the technical sides of the game (I had to disable network cards on my PC to even connect). PES5 was only marginally better - but still suffered from being a lazy port.
yeah i always pick smaller teams like iran, saudi arabia etc
plus i have to agree with you about quitters something needs to be done
Have anyone played the game/demo (in Leipzig)? 3 questions, please answer if you can
• No La liga license, but will the player namnes, club names and kits be correct? I don´t care about the actual La Liga-logotype
• Will you be able to “tilt”/change the camera, as you could in previous versions. Not being stucked with the same angle?
• Will you be able to take control of CPU-teams when playing a league. This was removed for pes 08 and when playing with a friend we couldn´t just choose one team each - we had to play EVERY single game
THANKS
Perhaps in the case of quitters a stat could be added in the on-line record on how many times they’ve quit, like a percentage or something. People would then know who the quitters were and avoid playing them.
Also if there quitter statistic gets to high they could receive a yellow then red card or something similar which bans them for a period of time from the gaming site.
No one wants a black mark against their name.
It would be like when you have the cheat prevention turned on in master league, if you quit you end up loosing by a much bigger margin, forcing you to play on until the bitter end.
Perhaps If you quit double goals at point of quitting could be added against you, I’ve never played on-line though so don’t know if this affects your record.
You could even have double or triple loses afflicted against you if you persist in quitting.
Just a few ideas ideas, hope they help.
Has any one tried to play across regions. I mean play some one in US or Canada from Europe. I tried and it said enter Pro Evo (US) disc. This really su cks. Havent seen the same happening with any other online game. Konami messed it up big time. if any one knows the solution to this issue.
ok online sucks! but that will always depend on the connection…
my real concern is about the game itself, while it has amazing gameplay…almost real, it lacks the atposphere, tha stadium antics tat a real soccer match has
i think thats what really lacks in pes, the online i can forget and i don’t mind about it.
some player stats have to be revised(fabregas, anderson, nani) once again that ain’t the problem.
the commentary the stadium sounds the atmosphere are mediuce for me for a game like pes…it deserves a LOT mORE!
as for playing with underdogs… the formations always help!
i beat ANY team of the game with S.L.benfica coz i always put my players where they play better!
the likes of adriano and ibrahimovic can be beaten on any given sunday although they seem to have glue….
getafe gave a good pes expirience!
underdogs teams are what makes this game so great BUT ONLY IF U PLAY WITH YOUR CONDITION ARROWS IN RANDOM!
what really sucks is when u play when all in red. the underdogs have lesser chance, thus the “fortune”factor and the ability to change ur squad when some are “dismotivated”
I also prefer playing with smaller teams, but then after playing a few seasons I see one of the other big teams straggling, then I wish that I could take over as their new coach.
This is the reason why I seem to be obsessed with the idea of the ML being more like the manager mode of FIFA 08.
The idea of playing in a cup final with a team I used to coach and wondering if i can beat them or not.
Over at Gametrailers.com you’ll see a new vid from italy - france AND an interview with the Seabass-boss. You’ll see footage at the background, also of the new be a legend-mode. It’s very interesting!!

i beat someone 7-3 last night i was ajax he was man utd, its good that he didn’t quit, and i respect that i never quit also , a few days ago i got beat 5-1 and if i quited it would’ve only meant a 3-0 loss, there’s no need to change how it works, simply check there DCs on there profile
yeah quittings a real problem on all online games but on a 1vs1 like PES it takes real effect. you wouldnt really notice if somebody quit on say COD4 unless it was the host. good idea about the 10 game ban system but ive occasionally quit even when leading if theres a knock at the door, or my tea is suddenly ready ect so it would have its drawbacks
Quitting is a problem, especially in gears of war
bans for quitters are a good idea as they make my blood boil. giving up 20 or 30 mins to play against them when they quit in stoppage time is a sickner.
i sometimes let people score against me early on to keep their interest, silly really
Erm, sorry dougie, but I believe Constanti were the unlicensed version of Fenerbahce in PES6…who most people have heard of. Still, would agree that they’re hardly one of the titans of world football, so you would feel like you’d earned a win with them.
Anekks = Alex and so on
APPARANTLY PES 09 HAS GOT CL LICENCE AFTERALL
I have to agree with your outlook on playing with the lesser teams. I always play with ireland, not just because I’m Irish but there is nothing better than beating a Brazil or Inter with IRELAND lol. And yeah the reactions you get are great.
I also fell the exact same way about quitters. It used to annoy me a hell of a lot, but not such much anymore. I think I have come to the same conclusions as you. However, I’m not sure the ‘banning’ idea is so great. I mean people quit when they’re losing by more than 3 goals because then they are only handed a three 3-0 loss. I think 3 goals should be added to the score they are getting beat by at the time of quitting.
Also, there is nothing more annoying than getting disconnected when you are winning. I think when this happens the game should be void, or at least count as a draw.
Great Post btw.
Luger
Any ideas on how the CL is implemented?
There has to be a way of preventing or, at least, heavily penalising quitters.
It’s not guaranteed that there will be a CL mode. However, I believe it is going to be a separate mode from master league.
YH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IS IN IT YH!!!! http://www.winningelevenblog.com/news/gamespot-confirm-cl-license-in-pes-2009/
LA LIGA IS ASWELL SO YH BUT IT WILL BE CALLED DIFFERENT,
SUMMAT LIKE SPAINISH DIVISION 1
THEY WILL HAVE ALL KITS AND NAMES AND NUMBERS SO,
DUNT WORRY ^_^
GUYS ASK ME ANYTHING I ILL ANSWER UR QUESTIONS,
I AM A EXPERT OF DELIVERING NEWS SO YH ASK ME ANYTHING,
I WILL ANSWER,BEST GUY TO KNOW FOR INFO ON PES 2009,
TRUST ME ^_^
ok. Here’s a question. Is your caps lock broken?
no obviously not
lmfao.
wow “Ps3 is the best”, you always deliver good news! nice!
yh ps3 the best ur good for news man,
thanks for confirming the news on CL and la liga thanks man!!!
I wonder if it would be a good idea to actually dock more points for the quiters and give much more points for the winners. Surely there must be a system to tell whether it was a disconnection on purpose or a disconnection by network fault. Any ideas??????
l
Does any1 know the currnt condition of the Edit mode for 2009. i mean will they have the edit mode from the PS2 version for the 360 N ps3. or will it b basic
and another question how certain are you that the la liga is in the game and that the kits a real and names. becasue what would b the point of fifa getting the licence exclusive if we can change the name our selves and it will as itsfully licenced
YH MAN WE GOT THE EDIT SYSTEM BACK TO NORMAL BUT WE ARE
EVEN MORE BETTER THIS TIME YH!!!!!!!!!
just wait till the game comes out and then we can all get happy over it or not, this is all pointless hype as this is what makes us critisze the game even more with all fans getting over excited with the news, just wait till its been released
how are you so sure that we have the EDIT MODE back to normal. becasue Konami hasnt mentioned it
they have mentioned it on a video clip on wenb
so for confirmation EDIT MODE is 100% confirmed to b like the ps2 version and not like last years
well if u go on the website you will find it, there is also a link someone put on here either on this blog or the one before
@ El Tel.
Thats exactly what i was going to post, sometime i’m winning and the ps3 disconects, so i get the lose, maybe if that happens, if should be either a draw or nothing at all, because i’m was winning.
And if you are losing 10-0, you disconect it goes 3-0, it should be 10-0, maybe a new system that can recognize and remember the score so the next time you log on, the score is 10-0, and not one lose, but two are three.
I bet you if that happened not so many people would disconect.
To be honest, if you have a legitimate reason for disconnecting (connection failure, internet failed etc) then to be treated so harshly wouldn’t go down well with a lot of people. Suspensions would be very harsh if someone has had a problem connecting to the Konami servers (which given the problems with PES6 and PES2008 isn’t beyond the realms of possibility).
Recording the disconnects and making them available for the opposition to see would be helpful though. If you can see that someone has disconnected in 12 of their last 20 games, then you’re a lot less likely to accept a challenge from them - whether it’s deliberate or accidental. If they have a connection problem, why should you have to suffer it?
@ nikicampos - Totally agree with your comment. It would be great to be awarded the exact score from the point that the opposition disconnected. Goal difference would then be good as well.
@ Talarin - When someone comes into your room and requests a game, you can see how many in total disconnections they have have had, wins, losses etc. Mind you i agree that it would be great if they could split the disconnections, ie. people who have disconnected on purpose, and those that was a network failure.
Question for PS3 IS THE BEST:
What do you mean by ‘they will have all kits and names and numbers’. Are you saying that the kits well resemble those of real life kits with brand name and sponsers?
Guys,
Have anyone noticed that most of the people that are from italy tend to have the worse lagging problems. I played two italian people, at one point i was in a scoring position and next the italian had scored a goal.
To topple this his message was a constant HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…
Regardin the legend mode, do you get to be summoned to come and represent your national team in a friendly match or tournament? Coz that would be awesome.
yes “OTTO” the la liga will be in it but will be called different casue fifa has the licence. la liga in pes 2009 = spainish division 1, but will have all kits, numbers and names. so yh guys enjoy the game plus u will have champions league mode,
(in ur face fifa hahaha) we are gonna win this year

yh the name is wrong but la liga is their with names and kits and numbers,
plus the edit mode is back but bigger better than eva
Wouldn’t be cool if we could use Edited Teams Online -without- having to worry about Default Settings.. That’s something I would really appreciate in a Football Sim, the option to use Default (Original) Teams -or- Edited Teams (Edited Team Kits and Badges) with Edited Players.
Anyone haves any Idea if this will be posible (or Not) in PES09??
Not.
yeah alot of people do use brazil and inter all the time…
and people do tend to quit early if you’ve got like a 3-0 lead in like 60 seconds! lol…
but none of that bothers me. The only thing that gets on my nerves is when people score a goal- regardless if they are getting beaten 6-1 or whatever, and then they replay it over and over and over until I have to quit the game- has this happened to anyone else?
Likewise, i’ve played people who don’t take their goalkicks, and i have to wait around or quit. Thankfully, they sorted this in the 2008 version (although I can’t enjoy playing that game- its like a 1980s arcade game- every goalie is a taibi, and the players transport all over the pitch!)
AM i alone in thinking something has happened to the physics in the game very recently? I’ve found my goalkeeper running out for absolutely no reason, defenders getting pulled out of position etc for no reason…i mean i have 4 control pads, and its happening with them all, and my cd and connection haven’t changed…I only say, because i went from being 70% wins after 600 odd games to only 38% after 1000- including a 90 game losing streak! i went from being ranked in the top couple of thousand to being ranked 350 thousand and something! I just can’t defend anymore at all on it, what with the players running off on their own, so much so, that i don’t even bother playing it online anymore!
Normally I used to just pick the team I want to be-
I’ve probably been brazil twice- inter, about 5 times- all of which i played against people who were brazil or inter.
I totally agree with picking the lesser teams, nothing more fun than picking a random team, and finding a player like rivaldo or rui costa or whatever amongst the lesser stars!
you have to realise some/most people don’t quit because they are getting beat, i quit when i feel the result is completely unfair, like i’ve had 10 shots and scored 0 but they have a dodgy corner a grab one just before half time, and then another in injury time. Or, i quit because of lag or dodgy gameplay, like the ball passing through the players etc etc. Anyways, i can’t wait to beat you on PES2009 ;-)
Cheers
You can’t just quit because they score a lucky or because you’ve been unlucky, just accept your defeat even if it’s unfair or you’ve played better thats just what footballs about.
Hi there everybody i think all u guys are out of your ****ing mind. What the **** is happening in this ****ing website and i think this is one of the ****in one ****in piece of a ****in american ****ing ****. **** U ALL
