PES Off!! 28th August 2008

FIFA 2009. Apparently there’s a lot of buzz around the game this year.
Yes, I know, there normally is around this time of the year, but if you’ve seen any footage of the game at all,
I think you would agree that we have a serious contender this time round.
After years of mediocre, superficial titles, they may finally have caught up with PES in the gameplay department.
We know that FIFA has always had presentation and style at the forefront, but we always dismissed that side of the game, because we prefer the solid gameplay that PES delivers.
My question to you all is quite simply, what if?
What if this year, they have a better game than PES? I know I’m entering the terrain of blashphemy right now, especially on a PES site, but please hear me out. I would like to encourage serious debate about this question. I’m not advocating FIFA above PES, or trying to start a fight, but just asking the question.
We all knew that this was a possibility, albeit a remote one. But could FIFA finally have the upper hand?
Personally speaking, I’m looking forward to the demo of FIFA arriving soon, to test it out myself.
I would like to know how much it has come along, and will be looking to compare it to PES.
For the record I haven’t bought a FIFA game since buying FIFA ‘95 on my megadrive years ago.
I have played the odd FIFA title over the years, but only to laugh at it, and ridicule the owners of the game. But this year, we may have a very hard decision to make.
I would like to refer you all to the warnings that Dan has been giving in this week’s IWP, and like him,
ask us all to take a step back from the building euphoria surrounding PES.
PES may finally deliver a title worth purchasing, but then again, we thought that last year.
I think this year, PES will rectify most of the complaints we had about PES2008, but not really give us the total overhaul that Seabass talked about last year. I think they have slipped back into old habits, and just tried to patch up the game, rather than think about a proper current-gen version.
As some people have commented, it could be PES2010 that does that. But right now, it seems that FIFA may be onto a winner.
So the natural question to follow the “what if” question is - how many of you would seriously consider purchasing FIFA over PES? Or both?
I think it would be more prudent to take in the demo of FIFA, then once PES is released, to contrast and compare, should FIFA have a proper game on their hands.
Something else I would like to ask is - does anyone else feel they can easily pick up and play past versions of PES, and relive just how good they were? I do this on occasion, and feel each version had its merits and still are playable.
Now that’s something FIFA fans can’t really claim to be able to do. Whilst each version for them has improved,
I think its safe to say that the previous versions do compare unfavourably. Again, this could be interpreted as FIFA making steady progress, or as showing how poor the “current” version was, when revisited after a better version is released.

OK that’s me done, now over to you guys - and please remember to respect each other’s views, no matter how much you disagree with them. We’re not all the same, and it would be a boring world if we were.
Cheers

FIFA Sucks!
I’m taking FIFA 08 As an example
have you ever found derby county, middlesbrough, everton and wigan taking the first places in the premier league?moreover, can you imagine Man. Utd. reglates that often?
this becauase powers in the game isn’t balanced and let’s see what will EA do in FIFA 09.
Back to PES,I think seabass needs time and LOTS of money to make an overhaul.I don’t think that’s difficult because konami is one of the best game industries in the world.
However, some points anger me.Like when you(blogers) sent a mail to konami and seabass and they neglected you.FIFA improved because the developers were listening to thier electronic forums very seriously.that’s why FIFA is improving faster than PES.
I really dont see that much improvement in FIFA 09. Yes the gameplay is faster but after a while it will become predictable like every FIFA game. That PES video looks very good in terms of gameplay.
I agree with you that PES is not advancing as fast as FIFA but in my mind FIFA is so far behind that it will seriously challenge PES maybe in the next gen consoles ( xbox 720 ps4 ).
The reason is this: FIFA is built on a engine that allows for smooth movements and good, detailed graphics but its not the right engine for the gameplay. And PES is the total opposite. FIFA’s technology is too complex to make EVERYTHING in that game good including gameplay, while PES engine is very simple. Ever notice how unnatural the movements look in PES ( 2008 improved a bit in this department tho )? And after you play like 10 matches it starts to seem very natural. I guess KONAMI knew this and decided animations were not the most important thing to their game, so instead focused on speed and responsiveness.
I, for one, am VERY glad that KONAMI is taking a step back, so to speak. It will bring that old PES feeling back. and thats another thing. FIFA 09, while it looks much better then last year, just will not have that satisfaction that you get when you score a hard earned goal in PES, and that to me means a lot.
Also, ADAM from WEBN said the game was awesome , the version that they played which is different to the videos we have seen from LEIPZIG. And he is fully aware of what people thought of the 2008 version, so him stating that its massively improved on the most of the flaws of 2008 is a good a sign. Basically PES 2009 is back to beign PES….
Now it’s time to stop judging FIFA by the videos and wait till the DEMO hits.
Thanks for reading ( assuming you read this )
I will definatley be downloading the demo of 09, if i like that i may buy the game as well, i’ll be buying Pro aswell and see how i get on with either. i’ve preffered pro in the past, i di buy fifa 08 last year but still preffered pro to it even tho last years pro was unforgivable with the stuttering, restricted edit mode. basically from what ive seen and heard of pes 2009 it’s basically 2008 v2 not that big improvement just basically a 2008 with the features put in and bugs fixed it should have had in the first place.
Whats funny is konami seem to think we should be grateful for that.
Fifa trumps pes in every department except the actual gameplay, especially presentation and the commentry is so good compared to the pathetic effort of champion and lawro
i seriously hoping FIFA09 comes up with the goods on the gameplay front this year,so i can dump pro for good, i’ve had enough of konami/seabass hype which they just don’t deliver on.
fifa 2009 seems briliant. Much better than PES 09 that seems old.
Some people saying that PES 09 seems better. but NOONE Says Why?
FIFA 09 (AND FIFA 08) has
-More Licences
-Better Sound,Comendators
-Better Tribbles-Skills (you can make more tribbles and combinations of them and are so realistic)
-Better (miles away) Graphics,Visuals,Details,Lighting
-Better Animations (in pes players running like Super Mario)
-Better Colisions
-Better Physics.(the ball moving far better with real physic. In Pes in all passes the ball is stucked in the ground with no jumping, Unrealistic)
-Better AI-Defence
-Better GK
-Better Manager Mode
-Better Speed (more realistic makes that SIM)
-Better Simulation (PES is still too arcade)
-Better Online Modes (you can play 10vs10)
And all these makes the game having BETTER GAMEPLAY
can you tell me 1 thing that PES is better? becouse i think there is nothing.
And how do you know all this has been improved? Have you played either game? Can you seriously make such a judgement when both games are months away from being released?
Call me a fanboy but i’m 99% certain PES’ gameplay will wipe the floor with FIFA this autumn (as it always does).
@Thomas
Dude REALISTIC FIFA :O:O
DAMN YOU SO STUPID !! FIFA SELS BECAUSE OF THERE LICENSeD TEAM NOT BECAUSE OF GAMEPLAY !! OMG THE NAME SAS IT ALL! FIFA!!
FOR ME PES 2008 was a disapoiting 1 !
but i hope they make pes 2009 better and about that 10 vs 10 (from fifa) ,, i think 7 vs 7 is better because, the attack begins from the defance and witch guy is gonna choose a defender AND fif’s be a pro mode everbody ****S with it so it aint fun ! ! i have fifa 08 and 5 vs 5 and everbody chooses a ! ATTACKER OR midddfielder ,
WHY PES IS BETTER !!
- BETTER GRAPHICS!
- BETTER GAMEPLATY
- MORE FUN !
- and you have a Become a Legend mode wich is NON STOP until you retire!
- LEGENDMODE MORE FUN!!
- MASTER LEAGUE MORE FUN !
- AND AI is better this year ! the GOALKEEPERS has been IMPROVED !
_ EDIT MODE !!! YOU CAN HAVE A CUTOM MADE BOOT !
- YOU CAN GET YOUR Mp3 file in the GAME if you dont like the MUSIC!
- BETTER OF THE BALL MOVEMENT !! some1 sad ones that he had played fifa and pes at leipzig this year andhe was a fifa fan AND HE LIKE THE GRAPPHICS OF PES ! MORE THEN FIFA ! AND HE IS FROM EA!
- this years game has the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LICENSED ! MUAHAHAHHA !!
- 100 % lag FREE this year !!
-Player models have improved, players look more realistic (Beckham even has his neck tattoos)
-New Manual Pass system
i JUST WHAS STARTING !
The look of the grass has been improved
The ball does not seem to roll for an enternity along the grass
HERE MY POINT OF THAT FIFA ****S WITH FANS ! THEY ONLYE BUY LICENSED!
^^^^^^^^ Agree.
looks like teh same old game to me.
a little tweaks here and there sure, but that doesnt justify another £40!
for me i do not think that konami put enough effort into the improvements in their games, i dont think full kit editing is a plus because this was in teh ps2 version.
become a legend was also in the ps2 version.
fifa is looking promising to me thanks!
I’ll buy both, like i normally do.
The way i see it, why do you have to have an allegiance to either game? I’m a huge fan of fifa, and a huge fan of pes.
And as far as blasphemy goes in the eyes of pes fanatics, screw them, tell them to get a life and enjoy both games because if you just became a little more open minded they are both good.
This taken from thomas,
I would compare Fifa 09 with Pes 2009 but neither are out and u can’t have a review on a game until you have played it but compare Fifa 08 to Pes 2008:
FIFA 08 compared to PES 08 has
-More Licences …..agree
-Better Sound,Comendators …..agree
-Better Tribbles-Skills (you can make more tribbles and combinations of them and are so realistic)….whats a tribble?
-Better (miles away) Graphics,Visuals,Details,Lighting …agree although fifa only looks good from far…but they still can’t beat PES’s graphics up close especially there faces are dead on.
-Better Animations (in pes players running like Super Mario)…super mario is pure and so is PES
-Better Colisions…..both are the same although Fifa 09 is looking quite nice.
-Better Physics.(the ball moving far better with real physic. In Pes in all passes the ball is stucked in the ground with no jumping, Unrealistic)…..who jumps when they pass a ball? PES still beats fifa at that might not be by that much but still is.
-Better AI-Defence….. both games were ordinary, well at least with PES my defenders weren’t getting in my way when im trying to clear the ball.
-Better GK…. both are rubbish
-Better Manager Mode both are pretty decent although I found master league is more of a challenge from the start with playing with a generic side.
-Better Speed (more realistic makes that SIM)… PES was fast and still enjoyable….fifa’s I liked the pace of it but it would of been sweet if they could make there players responsive and nonretarded
-Better Simulation (PES is still too arcade)….PES 08 mighta been arcadie but it still gave you a sense of satisfaction when you scored a hard earned goal, either from great build play or in the dying seconds of a match to save your team, that and the fact that you can score in so many different ways in PES compared to the “usual” in fifa
-Better Online Modes (you can play 10vs10)… cant argue with that one.
Both games were good with leaving alot to be desired, but personally I never had a slowdown issue with PES when running it through HD on my PS3, it was only when i tried to play it on standard def it was unplayable.
In the end both games are shaping up to be great, but im not going off any of those videos to say which will be better. I will decide that when I have been playing both for some time.
Oh yeah, with Fifa’s Adidas Live Season sounds pretty good and it’s based on form with certain coloured arrows pointing in different directions……geeeez I wonder where they got that idea? about the arrows…. coulda swear I’ve seen that somewhere before?
I find it amusing when people slag off FIFA and big up PES. I have been playing PES for 10 years and loving it, but thats only becausse it felt like i was playing football, making football decisions, i am too fat and old to play the real thing so, I want the closest thing i can get to on my games console. Up until last year, that was supplied by seabass and his team, but, PES 2008 was a joke. I always buy both games, FIFA was always just for when i fancied a kick about and it always made me want to jump back into Pro Evo. Not so last year, i played far more fifa, i like to play online, i played over 200 games online with FIFA, none at all on the Crap pes 2008.
This year, hopefully, we will have 2 very good games, I am a consumer, i want a good football game, who cares who that game is made by??…I will play both, then lean towards the better one, If they are both superb then who is the winner?? I think its me the consumer!!!
IF PES 2009 HAS **** ONLINE PLAY IL BE BUYING FIFA 09 JUST AS I ENDED UP HAVING TO BUY FIFA 08 COZ PES 08 WAS A JOKE OF A GAME. I JUST WISH I BOUGHT THE PS2 VERSION OF PES 08 AS I HEAR ITS MEANT TO BE GOOD
To be honest, i will be buyin both this year. Fifa is going to be like an insurance just in case pro doesn’t deliver. I think fifa is a decent game, but no way as good as pro, we all know that. I was playin pro 5 the other day, still a great play!
Personally there’s two things Ilike about FIFI 08.
1. Manager Mode (Makes game more enjoyable, realistic and prolongs life span of the game)
2. Licensing (which means more teams both, national and club and first division teams)
But in totality the game can not be compared with PES.
PES for life
@RONDOMMAN is righ ,, where did we see that before?
HA FIFA FANS WHERE DID WE SEE THAT BEFORE
That fifa only has the licensing is bullcrap. They really progressed in the gameplay departement. While PES was very arcadey fifa was more simulation. And that’s what we expect from a PES game. So saying FIFA is a bad game is ruding against the gameplay you want.
Still fifa hasn’t put a simulation out there that’s better than PES 5. But maybe 2009?? it’s faster, reacts very smooth… On the next gen consoles fifa has without a doubt the upperhand.
Most of the guys who say “fifa sucks” haven’t even played fifa for more than 2 hours so how can you judgde??
For me it doesn’t matter who is the best title… it shouldn’t beacause all we want is a good game. If fifa is better than pes, than we should buy fifa => bommers for pes. If Pes is better we should play pes.
I always have been buying both so i know what i’m talking about. PES always was better in gameplay with pes 5 as it best. but previous year fifa was (for the first time ever) slightly better than PES. With the improvements they made this year the gap will even widen because pes made a better game but no real improvements, just fixing.
If fifa will beat the gameplay of pes 5???? I don’t know, that’s for us to wait and see.
You can’t get around it anymore.. fifa isn’t bull**** anymore and why should that be a bad thing?? If they provide the good gameplay… well than it’s good for us… it’s Pes his problem and they should offer us better if they want to return in pole position
greetz
WHen is the FIFA demo out?
THOMAS wat age are u ? 12 !!!! u sound like a spoilt brat , i bet u fell for the old fifa trailer , foaming out the mouth and gone awwwww how shiney , no 1 has ever said pro looks better than fifa graphically but to real gamers grahics dont mean much its all about the gameplay . i could go on about how much better pro is but im not gonny waste my time and about fifa 08 i bought it when it first came out (just to pass time untill pro came out) and played 1 game and took it bk it was awful !!! PRO 4 Life
Are u mad thomas. U’ve made a list to make ur claim seem more factual. my Brother is ten and tells me how unrealistic Fifa is!
this war between the two games more than not comes down to loyality in my opinion unless your really open minded its like the war between the consoles ps3 vs xbox 360. if you had a psx then you most likely own a ps3 now unless u converted same with the first x box.
i personally used to have a mega drive which i only used it to play streets of rage, sonic and fifa 95, 96 on.
i had a n64 and a psx with iss64 which i played last night for the crack before a quick blast on goldeneye.
since then i have gone down the playstation route having the ps2 then holding on for the ps3 instead of the red ring of death 360 which i think was the best decision i have ever made. i continued on the route of iss to pro evo and since then have never brought a fifa game since 96.
i play the fifa demo’s as just to see what the game is like but for me now the loyality of following the pro evo series since day one is always at heart. i love everything about pro evo and still would never convert to fifa. the way the game plays and editing the day you buy the newest version i look forward to all that.
i think even if in a few years fifa did become a better game in my eyes i would still stick to my beloved pro evolution soccer.
FIFA’s Shat
u are all ****ing retards!!! FIFA 08 was sooooooo much better than PES 2008, which was ****!!! FIFA is actually realistic and you have to work to score a goal, but in PES is soo ****ing easy to dribble around every1 its unrealistic. oh and every1 get a ****ing life and stop wasting time on **** PES websites, you pile of ****s!!
Hi you crazy footaball lovers from konami hq
Hope you will buy are new football quiz game Pro evolution soccer 2009 it has great questions like
What has changed from last year ? - ha ha ha we have a good laugh in the office over this yearly question, the secret is to make only very very small change you hardley notice, you really good pro Evo player if you notice differnce from last ho ho
What feature is bull**** - this is another good one we caught many people out with the Teamvision bull**** last year can you spot this years
the demo is unfinished is the full game any better - ha ha ha as you know we put the full game at lepzieg last year but reduced the amount of teams you could play and told you all it was 60 - 70 % demo the finished game will be much better ha ha ha i am still laughing as i spend your money on my new car and house make me cry with joy
We at konami hope you liked last years joke of pro evo 2008, we hope you like this years even more and support us with your lovely folding notes to light are cuban fat cigars with.
As a preview we play trick on some of your friends like WENB by letting them play EA’s EURO 2008 game and claiming it was PRO. It was so funny when we read there post of how much different it played to our finished, ooops sorry “DEMO” of our latest pro 2008 patch….er i mean pro 2009 Quiz which is of course completly re written after we went back to the drawing board like i promise.
P.S keep sending monies, need to lite cigar
PES vs FIFA you need to stop being so immature, just accept some people prefer fifa and think its progressing to be a better game than PES at the moment.
I prefer PES ..have done ever since ISS on the playstation…but Fifa 08 to me seemed to outshine PES in alot of areas..hard to say but true.
Konami need get this right because if Fifa win this year again (and yes they did win..every review i read gives fifa the edge) then it will be extrememly hard for Konami to catch them..
Think of it..Fifa with all its licences, leagues.game modes..online..and now seemingly adding the great gameplay..its smart thinking by EA
The ball is in your court Konami…lets see what you have come october
Fifa 08 > Pes2008, its simple - it was a better game. The reason Fifa is becoming the better game, is because they have totally taken the gameplay ethic of PES, wrapped it in their lovely presentation skills/licences, given us whats approaching a proper manager mode, and now refined it! Euro 2008 played so much like a PES title, the buttons are even the same!
Fifa 09 for me, I’ve had every ISS since day one but theyre ass masters now - I’ll play a demo but my money is on Fifa.
are you telling that FIFA is unrealistic? are you blind? have you ever tried in XBOX360/PS3 version? game seems like real game on TV. come on…
how can you play with Super Mario?
What fifa does online is impressive… Pes can’t top that… Fifa wins at every thing outside the gameplay.. but even that is fixed in the years past.
Guess we have a new king, or can Konami suprise us once again??
I sure hope so
Hi guys I am an objective Proevolution gamer. The way I see it is, Pes is very good game but not perfect.Put the online shambles aside gameplay is fantastic, you have players like Ronaldo, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrad and Riise producing ferocious shots which are on target 6/10 times. You can score in so many different ways. On the other hand Fifa08 is not considered to be good game in terms of gameplay and shooting, but graphics, player physic(apart from faces), and ball physics are much more realistic. Not even mentioning the licence issues Fifa franchise have improved a lot and I think it will take Pes all the way this year. Put it this way I prefer taking Euro 2008 (fifa) penalties than I do Pes. So I think you can be a subjective pes gamer and stay in denial or an objective pes gamer and acknowledge Fifa franchise are progressing, and ultimately the potential of taking over as the number 1 football franchise unless Seabass listens to us.
Everthing speculation!
Wait until you can play the demos/games.
I definetely won’t stick with PES (like the past 5 years) and go for FIFA if the gameplay good.
Be mature, it’s not a question of loyality guys, you are the customer, you are spending the bucks!
The standard of online has been very poor in PES for the last two incarnations.
As someone who plays exclusively online, I’d say that if FIFA has caught up on the game play front then Konami have a serious fight on their hands.
It’s all better for us though. If Konami and EA actually have to innovate and stop producing lazy ports/upgrades to get market share then we’ll all get better games.
Hi
I wanted to have a FIFA game since the late AMIGA times. The first I bought was for the World Cup 1998. On my PS2 I bought the World Cup 2002, great game but then I switched tp Pro Evo 3. Sadly I sold it, big mistake. Pro Evo 5 was my last game. As there are alway fans who update the optionfile, I have my PES 5 with season 07/08 players and stats, perhaps I will find a 08/09 optionfile.
The newest footy game for me is FIFA 08 on my PSP.
Great game but a lot of bugs. AND: no online update since Jan’08.
I’ll wait and read reviews of both FIFA 09 and PES 2009.
Both FIFA and PES have many point to improve without giving us only updated rosters for 40 or 30 Euro, especially on the Playstation Portable Version.
Thanx for reading.
How did this column get less votes than Geek Chic for being the first to fail. “a PES sight? No…the correct word is “site”. Your writing abilities are terrible,
why do
you always start
a new sentence, or continue a sentence at the start of a new line like that? I really appreciate this website for the information it provides but articles which are just annoying to read, not because of their content but because of their poor structuring lets it down.
Moreover, you say “I think they have slipped back into old habits, and just tried to patch up the game, rather than think about a proper current-gen version.” How can anyone make a comment like that when no-one has played a 100% finished game? Yet again, the knives are being sharpened before the game has even been released. It kind of reminds me of last summer, when every football pundit had written off my beloved Arsenal, saying we wouldn’t finish in the top 4..proved them wrong there didn’t we? Let’s hope Konami do a similar job by proven people like this wrong.
“Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 - “It’s like PES 5 again!” was the triumphant cry of everyone who tried this one out. In other words, brilliant.”
Just copied that quote from Eurogamer, It’s from their round up of Leipzig. If that quote turns out to be true, I, for one, will be ****ing wetting my pants come October!
Oh, Dougiedonut. You need to get proof read, before you upload dude.
I AM JUST GOING TO SAY KONAMI LOST A PURCHASE WITH ME.
I dont know about all of you, but i am ****in sick and tired of hearing in the favor of PES the better gameplay and in the favor of FIFA the better graphics. As well as against PES no license and against FIFA ****ty gameplay.
Why the **** hasnt KONAMI done something about that. I mean i am still playing a superpatched PES6, because PES2008 is a ****in ****.
I am pretty sure you will all agree on what i am going to say, PES2008 was a HUGE mistake, and PES2009 will be what PES2008 was supoused to be. Thats why you can see FIFA catching up. KONAMI lost an entire year with PES2008, and now all the improvements SEABASS talked about were supoused to be on PES2008.
PES 2008 didnt add **** to the PES experience, i see it as a step backwards, so i see PES2009 as PES2008, you know what i mean.
ALSO, FIFA is taking advantage of next gen consoles, i mean PS3 and XBOX360 are ****in suspermachines, are you aware of the roof for those consoles, KONAMI is not exploiting at all that capacity, what about that. And for you to know, I HATE FIFA, i guess i will have to wait for PES6 SUPERPATCH V3 available on PESOCCERWORLD.COM (I know some people will know what i mean here), i rather do this than waste my money on ****in FIFA or an “ALWAYS A PROMISE” PES game.
(****, i think i must be entering the regular column posters with posts like this, i would be callin it “THE PISSED OFF FAN”, what do you all think about the name, lol)
A pes 5 with better graphics, gameplay, ball physics, stadiums, kits, and a MAJOR EUROPEAN COMPETITION ( hehe sorry guys I am not allowed to say which but you I think most of you might know ;)
I would say but I promised the “insider” I would not.
Just found 55 pictures of pro evo 09 to sink your teeth into the stadiums look really good. Some of the pictures i’ve never seen before they look mint!

ALL TAKEN FROM WINNINGELEVENBLOG ABOUT PES 09 EDIT FEATURE
Now, when I first got into edit mode I went straight into kit editing. Thankfully its a huge improvement over last year. With 4 layers and over 70 different designs in each section, its extremely easy to replicate pretty much any kit in the real world. This also goes for Man Utd. Many fans will know how their kit template wasn’t in last year (points at white skid mark on the back), but it is this time. It was also easy to spot due to the new way it is presented. When selecting different kit designs, you are shown the front and back designs via an isometric view showing two ‘mannequins’. One of them shows the front, and one shows the back. This makes finding the correct design much easier.
As well as the templates, Konami have incorporated the pixel paint function from the PS2 version to design emblems. I had a mess around with it, and can safely says its exactly the same as the PS2 version - so easy to use, and very accurate. Along with this you can also do the same import feature as last year with the eye toy camera. Thankfully though, as well as being able to upload 40 pics compared to last years 8, you can also upload pics directly from the HD. JPEG’s are fine, but the good news is that PNG’s with transparencies already set are also supported.
Now lets get onto player editing. There’s been a few new additions to this mode, but unfortunately for some reason one pet hate does remain. Tucked or untucked shirts. Well, I can confirm you still can’t select untucked shirts in the game. Player’s do have their shirt untucked during matches, but you can’t select this feature in edit mode.
As with the new view when selecting kit designs, the same mannequin concept is in place when choosing hairstyles. Again it makes life much easier when trying to find the perfect style for your player. Same with face editing, you can choose to use the eye toy camera or load a pic from the HD.
Personalising your player further, there are now new free kick, penalty and running animations to choose from. Ronaldo’s trademark FK and PK stances are available for e.g. as well new goal celebrations. As for boots, I can confirm Nike and Puma join Adidas as the licensed footwear. There are 16 slots in total, 4 of which are preset plain designs. Some guys might remember me saying on one of the podcast I was told by a friend that there was a possibility of a new way to present the boots in the game. Unfortunately this never materialised. The thought was that each of the 12 licensed boots would be a different design (i.e. Adidas Tunit, Adidas Predator), and once selected you could go through a range of colours. On further inspection this isn’t the case, with only the 16 boots on show being available.
Finally, lets go into the MP3 feature. Like we reported a while back, you are able to import chants into the game and assign them to a selected team. From what we could see it was one chant per team, but you can assign them to any team whether they are licensed or not. Along with chants you can also upload MP3’s into the main menu, meaning no more dodgy Konami pop songs you have to listen to!
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LICENCE!!!!!
Hell yeah!!
I Wonder if they have the champions league music playin when the players walk out?? That would b neat. Hope they have the real trophy for the eventual team that wins it too! :)
I agree with alot of what ochavac is saying here, PES 09 is in reality what PES2008 should have been..We wont see anything breathtaking till 2010 i fer and by that time Fifa will have got its claws into the ‘pes market’.
Konami proved they can make blockbuster games with jaw dropping looks…just look at MGS..i dont understand why they cant bloody get off their arses and bring PES into the next gen era..If this is buisness tactics..then they are losing pes fans by the second!
fifa has a lot more game types, and it looks better.
i have pes 2008 and it really sucks!
pes is a game from the old generation
i agree with fifa4ever, fifa looks way better. the most football players in pes dont look real. take ronaldhino, he is made ugly in pes 2008. i dont want to see myself made ugly in a game like pes.
DPAD GAME PLAY SUPPORT PLSSSSSSSSS
hate analog. Fifa sucks. PES 2009.. are you listening? Cuz i’ve pre-ordered PES 2009 and it better have the god damn DPAD SUPPORT! If it doesnt my orders getting cancelled and ill play the crappy fifa 08 with my analog sticks.. sick I dont play it cuz of that!!
I bought both last year and tho I played Pro much more I do believe that Fifa will be a match this year. I dont think that Fifa gameplay will be as good as Pro but it wont be far off and its got so much more going for it outside of gameplay that a slightly worse game engine wont matter for me. Pro gameplay is so good that being slightly below it aint a bad thing at all. (If pro didnt exist we would be loving fifa right now!).
The main reason Fifa is getting much better I feel is because three years back two Konami programmers defected to EA, so for me the progress is no surprise. But as I said in a previous post last week, competition will only force Pro to get better. Gameplay isnt everything and the closer fifa gets the more konami will have to address other areas to stay in the game. Konami needs more money to improve things but they need to realize that we make them money so to ignore us is stupid.
To live on past glorys is dangerous. Liverpool fans always talked about being the most successful english club. They stopped spending money wisely and all of a sudden Manu are 1 championship away from leveling the domestic trophy count. Fifa are chucking money at success like manu and its working!
Duz any 1 please know which premier league clubs will b licensed?
SPartan, how do you know this? about the two programmers who left KONAMI for EA.

My brother is 10 years old and after 30 min of FIFA he go back to PRO EVO and plays it all afternoon …he think fifa is boring…there lies the power of PES !!!
totally agree with OCHAVAC. really p****d off with the ‘total re-vamp’ that has supposedly been done. if konami arent making the effort to listen to the fans and just touch up a few things then i’d rather take my money to someone who is making an effort. we’ll see what the demos show.
KONAMI finally got the Champions League licence. (if the rumour is true) Does this mean, that FIFA lost it, and so Champions League will be missing from the 09 game?
I will buy and play which one is better, I don’t give my money to anyone for past history if I do not see anything coming back to me.
If an old friend would need money to get out of something bad and I know this is the guy that will give me somekind of gratitude back then, of curse I would.
If I give Konami my money and they do not give me anything back in gameplay from PES2008 and FIFA09 is better then PES2008 & PES2009 then why bother.. if they can’t even make a quick response to the letter sent from Dan with constructive views on how to improve and make PES2009 much better then FIFA.. then PES-the-f*ck-off to Konami.
Thanks
I wanna do a survey of who will be buyin both or just one of the two leading football games.
Pro 2009 Fifa 09
YES YES
If you could answer like this then that wud b great! Thanks.
PROBABLY MAYBE
Sorry, this is the best I can do for now. :)
fair enough
“FIFA Sucks!
I’m taking FIFA 08 As an example
have you ever found derby county, middlesbrough, everton and wigan taking the first places in the premier league?moreover, can you imagine Man. Utd. reglates that often?
this becauase powers in the game isn’t balanced and let’s see what will EA do in FIFA 09.”
Idiot, have you ever seen that in real life? No.
Have fun with your arcade PES.
Anonymous. I read this in a magazine. Money was a key factor funnily enough. The very first fifa after they joined was the one that the ball became detached from the player animation. I knew then that the gameplay would be close one day.
Great news on the kit editing and sharing of option files by the way. I will be kitting out every unlicensed with as much detail as possible before I kick a ball as I always do.
Lee. Manu and Liverpool.
Pro evo is definantly going to be better. Fifa always just seem to be Madden with a different shaped ball. In addition I have found that when playing against my friends in FIFA 08 the players of the smaller team are always to slow to compete with those of the bigger clubs. Pro is definantly my first choice bet i may get fifa so I can play against my friends who have fifa online. Gameplay matters more than looks!
ok spartan. cheers m8.
SPartan, thanks for the info because that for me explains alot because i was wondering how they suddenly improved so fast.
things i’ve noticed from the pro video…
positives…, nice menus; very clear, and general presentation, gamplay smooth, off the ball movement very good, passing looks good, replays smooth, loving the ad boards, keepers look well posistioned,,
negatives… still looks too fast,45 degrees dribbling, erm when hienze helps henry up look at the hands, passing from a free kick still looks like a lottery, crowds looks mince you cant tell the differnce from france fans to arge fans, keepers still parry pretty easy shots(this happened twice)
the first fifa game I had was Fifa 97! It was awesome it had an indoor game in it!!! 5 v5 fantastic. It was Fifa all the way till 2000 when it suddenly became a terrible game.
Then PES 5 came along and that was great…but when PES 2008 came out it was terrible (sorry) but FIFA 08 especially online is fantastic. Yes PES used to be so much better than FIFA but not anymore. I can’t wait till FIFA 09, the developers have listened to the fans and made the improvements (i hope)…PES is terrible online
If you aint seen it yet, watch playr 2 on bravo saturday at 11.30. It has gameplay footage of pro and fifa running side by side from leipzig. They both look sooo good! Its gonna be a good year for console footy, which ever game you follow!
EA, listening? EA are assholes that don’t give half a toss about their customers. I can say this because my little brother owns fifa 08, and because we’re in New Zealand, we can’t play the game online because there is a problem with the update. And then you come to fifa manager, which they can’t even be bothered patching more than once or twice. EA are in it for the money, pumping out substandard games because they know people will buy them out of routine.
agreed with those who preach that neither game is out so no judgement can be passed…BUT…if pes cannot redo the errors of 08 AND improve the game tenfold anyways then it looks like fifa is the way to go. nobody should have allegiances to either brand however even if they do both games should be given a fair shot (demos etc…) because 40 pounds is alot of money for sheer pride.
clock wtf! most pes fans will only be buying 09 out of routine this year cos last year was **** and fifa is steadily improving whereas pes was always better and is getting steadily worse even if pes improves last years they have to improve more cosit had been getting worse
I think PES should incorporate an emotion meter into the game - bigger matches, or heated derby games should heighten a players emotions - thus give increased or decreased performance depending on the player (i.e. better tackling/passing ability). This should be true to life - i.e. a big game for Andrea Pirlo would see him run the game with improved stats. However some players disappear in big games - so their stats should be decreased with this mode turned on (this could be turned off). There also should be a temperament stat out of 8 (like weaker foot accuracy) - say wayne rooney’s being 3/8 - thus when his emotion meter rises - especially if an opposing player badly fouls him (should increse emotion to a dangerous level) then once this level is surpassed, the player will do something uncontrollable - e.g. rooney getting sent off against portugal in 06. Just a thought.
Both demos coming up. I will download both 11th of September. I will make my early judgment. But, one thing very important to me is online gaming, so before i buy based on my demo judgment i will wait a week or two for the users coments (game sites, fan sites, blogs, etc). Thats the way i will do my decision, cause i want to make the right choice (i am not rich to buy both)
PS: Sorry about possible errors, i am portuguese.
Ups forget to mencion, i will wait a week or two after the full game version is released. Just an attachment :P, nothing to serius
….not sure
listen ..sega mega drive - loved fifa, the best thing since sliced bread. However, in my opinion PRO has since been the better game. I admit I used to slate FIFA and all its fans and I still feel I was right…however…after playing the poor excuse for PRO last year and the rapidly improving FIFA 2008 the gap was certainly closing. NOW….after playing the demo og FIFA 2009…game over….the new PRO has a lot to do…and personaly based on its development over the last couple of years, I dont think they will do it……”the king is dead, long live the king”!!!!!!
