Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
With the release of gameplay videos, screenshots, and all of those new details of how PES ’09 has developed since ’08, excitement is reaching fever pitch. Whilst the optimists speculate on how it’s going to be ‘like PES 05 but next gen,’ and the pessimists speculate on how it’s going to be ‘a slightly graphically improved PES ’08,’ all we can really do is wait. The demo will tell all, and whilst I’m not ‘in the know’ of when it will be released, my guess is around mid-late September, if the actual game is released in October. Then we’ll have some real, crazy activity on this website! You heard it here first! (Even though it was obvious…)
The Real Deal
I don’t own that many games for my Xbox360; Pro Evo ‘08, Battlefield: Bad Company, Halo 3, Rainbow 6 Las Vegas 2, and Splinter Cell: Double Agent, the latter which I got for £4 :)
For each of these games (with the exception of Splinter Cell) I paid around £35 for when they came out, and to me that’s a fair price. I played Halo 3 and BFBC online for a good four or five months after their respective releases; and Pro Evo is the game I constantly go back to, the one which I never bore of. Rainbow 6 was a great game in its own right, and a lengthy one at that. However, I can imagine that if you’re someone who likes a lot of variety, then you’re going to be spending a large amount of money on new games, and might have a solid view that videogames are too expensive. I apologise to those from other countries, but I assume that if you’re in America, then your brand new games are going to be $70-80?
Are there gamers amongst you that think games today are overpriced? £40 is a little under a days work at minimum wage in England, so I can definitely see how people could think games are overpriced, especially if you enjoy a lot of variety in your collection!

It seems the majority of people aren’t fans of PES ’08, and even though I am, I know it could have been better; more like PES 6 maybe, but why not spread some love and write a few things we liked about it? I liked the fact that footballers with more powerful shots were more accurately represented with regard to this ability – hit a shot with Gerrard, Rooney, even Lampard to a degree, and you know that it’s been HIT! Having written that, I realise it’s a lot easier to write what I don’t like about it…

Well, one thing, the demo wont tell us all, as you saw from Leipzig, the guys who have tried a more complete demo agree it looks and play way better, so, the only thing is to wait until the game come out.

Interesting question about the pricing of games.
Let me present a new perspective: I live in Romania, where a day´s work at minimum wage is somewhere near 10$. Luckily I live in a more developed region of the country, and for my internship this summer I got around 15$ daily for 6 hours of work. But even this might look ridiculously low to young people living in the UK, or the US, or any developed European country.
What I want to say is, that for me my condition, games look totally overpriced, even though in reality they might not be. Oh, and I do want to underline, that game prices can be up to 80% greater in Romania than in the UK because the majority of these games are not released for Romania. The publishers don´t have a romanian HQ or centre. So what shops do is they buy the games in the UK, or anywhere in Europe, transport it to my country and raise the initial price by adding the transportation costs and some extra.
Fact: Pro Evo 6 and Pro Evo 2008 for PC both had a cost of approx. 55$ when they were released. And that´s why I always ordered my games directly from the UK.
Anyone know if youtube uploading will be a feature for replays on the PS3? Pixeljunk eden has the support and its such a cool feature,

It’s good to see that even through the price barrier, as well as what us in UK/USA would see as low wages, that you’re still keeping gaming up as a hobby and passion. Would it be cheaper for you to send the £25 or $50 to someone in the UK plus the postage to send it back to you rather than go through the game websites in Romania?

I’m from Canada, and usually PES is $50, and most games are $60 for PS3/Xbox…minimum wage is $8.50, but it’s too low with the prices of EVERYTHING rising, especially gas…I know that games these days have high budgets and it takes a lot of time, but not all games deserve such a price tag. Personally, some games should NOT be that much because some games are just horrible lol…I don’t mind paying for games like PES or MGS4 or COD4 because those are worth it!

Q: Has Master League been improved or is it exactly the same as last year?
A: Yes, it has been improved. The menus are now more intuitive and the negotiations are now done on a two-tier basis. You negotiate on a team level and also on a personal level to make things much easier to use. Also, player loyalty is a lot more important. If a player is unhappy with the terms etc. they will not play as well. A happy player will play better.
Q: This might sound like a daft question but are all the nets the same just as they were in PES 2008?
A: No, they are different. We think they are much more satisfying this time, really stretch out when the ball hits. They have a much more ‘European’ feel to them now.
Q: Does the crowd still look like the people are made of cardboard or will it be more alive and realistic during the games?
A: In order to get a fully fledged working crowd would use up so much processing power of any machine, that it would render the gameplay virtually redundant, so it’s a case of weighing up what it more important. The crowd isn’t as one dimensional as previous games and you can see them rise when something happens in a replay for example, so there are improvements yes.
Q: Have the keepers been fixed? They, along with the game speed, ruined the game last time.
A: Yes, from what we have seen and also the comments we have read from those who know PES inside out, all agree that the goalkeepers are a lot better this year. They are much better and guiding the ball to safety or putting it out of play rather than parrying it back into the middle of the goal.
i’ve also gone back to playing pro evo 5 because some people said they play that version more than any other in the series. suppose it would get you back used to the play speed of the game for when pes 09 is released. as seabass said the speed of pes 09 is similar if not the same speed of pes 5. It still looks class love the nets in this game.
Im having problems getting my ps3 to connect on-line with pes 2008. everytime i try to connect a message comes up saying unable to transmit using upd port 5730.
Has anyone else had similar problems and know how to fix it.
All my other games work on-line, pes is the only one that doesn’t, which is bloody typical considering it’s the only game I really wanna play on-line.
there is massive problems in general trying to play pes 08 online ask anyone who has the game espeicially on the ps3 i suggest waiting for 09 because they have sorted out the connection speed, design and online lag **** and 2 vs 2 as a new feature is ready to boot. sorry i couldn’t help you further

I have played PES 2008 and EURO 2008 and i can say that PES is like 10 years old game…with only 8 directions,same old graphics,and arcade gameplay that it has nothing to do with real football.

The more I read about PES, the more I want it. I must admit that I was a bit dissapointed wathing the first vids. I will probably buy both FIFA and PES this year (will be my first FIFA ever), but will probably stick more to PES. I have a hard time with FIFA gameplay. Hope it will be better this year, and hope PES legendary mode will be as cool as they say. One thing with PES tho: How hard can it be to change the referee. Its always the same :/

FIFA 2009 will be the best with weekly player form update. Decent online play. Roster update every 6 months. Superb graphics. Superb licensing. Great gameplay starting FIFA 2008. (Fifa 1999-2007 I admit is as worst PES 2008).

Come on stupid idiots, Fifa has always sucked, before, now and ever. The gameplay is stupid, is like seeing some hutchback or monkeys running in the field, bad movements, same goals over and over, bad soccer simulation, and I can keep saying more. Man, in my country minimum wage is about $40 per day (local currency), but games generally cost a whooping $130, with some PS3 titles reaching over $300. No wonder piracy flourishes here.
I think PES should incorporate an emotion meter into the game - bigger matches, or heated derby games should heighten a players emotions - thus give increased or decreased performance depending on the player (i.e. better tackling/passing ability). This should be true to life - i.e. a big game for Andrea Pirlo would see him run the game with improved stats. However some players disappear in big games - so their stats should be decreased with this mode turned on (this could be turned off). There also should be a temperament stat out of 8 (like weaker foot accuracy) - say wayne rooney’s being 3/8 - thus when his emotion meter rises - especially if an opposing player badly fouls him (should increse emotion to a dangerous level) then once this level is surpassed, the player will do something uncontrollable - e.g. rooney getting sent off against portugal in 06. Just a thought.
Matt, the main idea of your thoughts is already implemented in PES (not sure about PES2008 as i returned to play PES5), in derby (the game recognize some of the major derbies in the world) or league deciding matches the AI seems to fight for the game and you can feel the heat of the match according to the situation. however this tiny details (unknown to most not hardcore players) added to the excellent gameplay makes the PES successful as it is. i can speak about them for days without finishing them. i read a lot of people suggestions that is already in the game (previous versions again as i cant confirm them for PES2008 which i played for a very short period before returning to my favorite PES5) but Konami doesn’t know how to make a successful advertisement like EA.

I think you will find most playstation magazines rated Pes 2008 higher than Fifa 08, I think PSM3 gave Fifa around 60/100 and gave pes 80/100. They also listed it as one of the top games to own on a PS3, which I don’t agree with because it wasn’t great.
The game however broken was still not as bad a Fifa 08, it just doesn’t feel like football, E.A haven’t got a clue about how to accurately represent real world Physics, or demonstrate accurate match results in their leagues.
Fifa 09 judging from the video looks no better, ive seen more realistic physics engines shown in cartoons than in the Fifa series.
Perhaps E.A should make a teenage mutant ninja turtle’s or X-men football game as they are used to including mutants in their games. I mean I know Wayne Rooney doesn’t look great at the best of times, but Fifa have him looking like Mr frigging potato head.
I will still give Fifa a chance to impress me as condemnation without investigation is the hight of ignorance, though I think it’s got about as much chance of impressing me as a fat slapper puking on my shoes on a Saturday night.

well the onlinehas to be 100 times better than what it is now.The glitches spoil every game,and once you lose 1 you seem to go through a spate of losing.I have dropped just over 200 points recently because of online lag.Certain teams thrive on lag as well as players.Once they get the ball theres no stopping them.I have read the speed merchants are also unstoppable in PES2009.I hope this is not true as every player is stoppable.But once youre on a losing streak youve had it.They should give every purchaser of the new game £10 off the new one if you have proof of purchase of PES2008 as a goodwill of selling an unfinished product.Me personally I cannot wait to burn this **** copy of what they call an online sim

Here’s my two cents about the whole pricing issues.
I really don’t think 50-60 bucks are expensive if you live in the US/UK or Western Europe. However, like the Romanian “dude” in post number six, I think games may come off as really expensive in some other countries.
Judging from his reports, Romania seems in a better spot than Brazil right now. We also don’t have an official Sony reseller here. Let me rephrase that. The Sony factories here build TVs, stereos, digital cameras and stuff like that, not Playstations. The same goes for Microsoft and Nintendo, but they do have official distributors.
Having said that, I believe gaming in Brasil is a popular hobby IF you take piracy in consideration.
“No way, piracy is just wrong”, you say. But check this out. ONE single PS3/Xbox360/Wii game costs us around R$200,00 (which translates do 133 dollars, as 1,5 Real equals 1 US Dollar). Minimum wage pays around R$420,00 (280 dollars) A MONTH. Simple math states that you would have to be crazy in order to buy a new game every month if you have an income such as that.
Why are games so overpriced? As it happens, you buy the game for 50 bucks in the US, pay 60% import tax. That’s already 80 bucks. Pay for the shipping and handling, and come to a total of 100 dollars. Add the retail seller’s profit and that same game goes for 130-150 dollars. And voilá, you get a little bit over 200 reais.
What ends up happening? On the PS2 and XBOX360 people choose to buy pirated games. They go around R$10-20 (6 to 12 bucks), depending on the system or title.
Also, the PS2 is very popular around these parts, making it the system of choice for many gamers. The slim PS2 goes around for R$500,00. The PS3 and Xbox360 are priced around the neighbourhood of R$1700,00 each (or 1133 dollars).
So, for many people, gaming is not an option. Or rather, using only original and legitimate games on their systems is not an option. Think about it. How long would you have to save some cash in order to buy ONE legitimate game and console?
So yeah, gaming is costly and takes a heavy toll on us. Stop gaming? No way! Stop piracy? That’s an option if game companies bring their legitimate bussinesses here with fair prices. All in all, gaming should not be a luxury, but a way to healthly spend some time with your friends.
That’s a very good comment Jorge, exactly what I was looking for, or looking to be told. At those prices I completely condone piracy, even if it must not make legitimate business sense for the big retailers to put games out in Brazil.
Those prices are crazy; I didn’t expect that at all - a game which costs you every two weeks wages?
If I do some simple maths, in the UK that would be equivalent to us paying £450 for the new Pro Evo!

2 b honist i enjoyed playing PES 2008, sitting at home wiv a few m8s n wiv a beers has been a laugh over the past year! but its been a laugh not becos of one persons skill but of the games mistakes! The keepers on PES 2008 shud be shot, the goals the let in a ridiculous n the saves they make are even worse, wen some1 shoots from 40 yards n it beats Van Der Sar by going straight down the middle at the pace of the olympic 1000m wheelchair final u expect ur keeper 2 save it! Also wen a short foward such as chopra has the ball and he manages 2 out muscle Terry or Ferdinand is a load of utter rubbish! and wots up wiv the England national team they are like invincible, wen nowadays they are carp! SORT OF THE LIVE!!! the runs off the ball are also a newsence u run down the wing n the other foward runs at u as if 2 tackle u n leaves no1 in the box, some of these are minore faults but build up frustration wen playing ……… i hope these things get fixed be4 the new game comes out! the limited things i enjoyed about the game was that tere was a element of pace in the right players, u give the ball 2 ronaldo agaainst a poor side n he will show u how poor they are lol i also like that they tamed down Adraino in PES 6 he was unstopable ‘He shoots he scores’ it was pathetic! even though i have critised the game heavily i still do like this game n no matter wot they do to the game tere is always going 2 be critisisms! :)
