As we draw ever closer to the final push for Pes 2009, with the number of days left to launch in single digits (if I’ve done my maths correctly) we can expect the buzz factor to reach fever pitch.
At the risk of sounding like a party pooper, I’d like to discuss something which has been quietly niggling away at me: DLC – paid content.
FIFA’09 will feature that Adidas live update doo-daa to make player’s stats reflect their real counterpart’s performances in game for a fee. That is something which grates with me, but since I’m not getting FIFA, it shouldn’t bother me too much, but as a gamer it does because they’re testing the water.
Konami are planning a DLC drop in February with more than likely transfer updates from the January window. I don’t think its clear whether they intend on charging it.
But if they did charge for it, along with say some additional boot packs, a couple more stadiums thrown in for good measure even – how would you guys feel about it?
I have to say that I only want to be paying for my games in one single hit, and personally I detest these micro transactions for extra stuff. The cynic in me tells me that this “additional content” more than likely was withheld from the original game, to enable extra dosh to be squeezed out of us. Other publishers have managed to make extra money, so why shouldn’t EA and Konami get a slice of the action?
Well we purchase these games annually without fail (unless we have an unprecedented pile of crap that was PES2008 – sorry to those who loved it!!) and are practically a permanent market.
Why should we be punished for being so loyal to their products? We should be rewarded with extra content, not penalised for being staunch supporters.
Now this may be a storm in a tea cup, but I think its better to side with caution, and consider what our collective response will be to such actions from Konami, should they take place.
Am I alone in objecting to paid DLC, or would more of you guys out there welcome DLC that you had to fork out a few quid for? Personally I think after the mess of last year’s version, Konami owe us big time, and should be making it up to us big time!!
I can inform you guys now, that we are taking steps to establish a formal relationship with Konami. This should enable us to have a proper voice for PES fans out there. More details on this will be released in due course, but I thought I would let you guys know for now.

completely agree should only pay once for the game and that should be the end of it .
Good Post dougie, i too would be disapointed if this was the case with the DLC if we are to pay for it.
It was only this time last year that we all shelled out the best part of 40 pounds on a game that was not finished and full of glitches, so this time around you would think we would be rewarded by our loyalty to the game.
Things that are add ons like new stadiums ect should really be in the game to start with and if it is a strategy to bleed more money from us i will be really downhearted.

as for there update been in feb for jan transfers if the demo is anything to go buy they need an update straight away to chnage the squads

How come FIFA can get all the Squads up to date with Robinho and Berbatov last minute signings yet FIFA was released two weeks before Pro Evo. Konami are just lazy buggers.
i agree, DLC should be free if it is going to be transfer and stadium updates. it’s not the same as downloading new maps for halo, that is to stretch gamers when they are bored.
the transfers are integral to the whole game!!! i cannot believe they are being this lazy. i’m a man city fan and playing as city online will be so poor compared to what they should be. there will be no robinho, wright-phillips, zabaleta, maybe even kompany. thats most of out first team!!
I can’t say I would buy an update? I’d rather save the downloading time and money and just do the transfers myself? … After all I’m planning to have an option file which has all the kits/names/logos etc already done so for a case of moving a few players about, I’ll happily do it!
Just a quick point though, If I had an option file with the correct kits etc, if I then downloaded the update, would that not overwrite the data on the option file? For example say I’d changed Berbatov’s stats/appearance, and then downloaded an update, would he go back to default? And would the kits revert back to default? Cos obviously Konami can’t do an update themselves with correct kits! So would it overwrite this?!

i also detest dlc. games where you use to complete them in certain circumstance to say unlock new constumes, you now merely get an achievement and have to pay for new costumes. im talking about the money grabbers who made ninja gaiden 2, a week or 2 after release you could pay like 300ms+ for one new costume, and they released 3!
it really annoys me when dlc is released so close to the games release because these could certainly be put in the final release!
EA have got it right on prior occasions, FIFA you dont pay for one league and i dont see many people needing much more than that but the best example would be the latest battlefield game, they released new maps and a new game mode about 30days into its release for free because they saw they should have been present in the games release!
I would detest it if Konami were to offer DLC for an additional fee as it doesn’t make sense if you think how bad PES 2008 was (esp. for the next gen consoles) and how much money we already pay for the game when it comes out.
Furthermore, I have my concerns on what such DLC would do to the updates that you would already have made to your option file.
Let’s say that we make all the corrections to make sure that all the transfers are up-to-date (including the many transfers that Konami didn’t bother to update themselves before the game gets out), update kits, add new talents etc. and we download the DLC that Konami has made available: will that ruin all the work that you or someone else has done on the OF?
We still can’t judge anything yet using the demo.. but if the fans are increasing thru PES 2009, that will surely hit FIFA 09 really hard.. The kits more look like in FIFA.. I think!

They make whatever they feel like… you like it, buy it, you don’t, the don’t bother buying it!!! Why the hell would you say, “hey Konami, PES2008 was crap, so I want free DLC! Make it up for last year!! ” You know what, the don’t give a toss about what you think…
I think EA’s fee are due to the fact that they are an ongoing service rather than a one-off DLC (by the way, you do get one league updated for free) Having said that, I think paid DLC is a trend which is really annoying. Like you said, you paid for the game, so there should be no reason to pay any more. Its seems as though developers and publishers will try to squeeze every dollar out of their games, as long as we keep buy them!

What is being speculated upon is a ‘transfer update’ which amounts to a new default OF. Most of us will already have made edits to our own or be using another persons OF handiwork. If Konami can’t get the up-to-date kits, it at least shouldn’t be that difficult to get up to date squad listings pre-release.
I don’t support paid for downloadable content for PES, however would download extra map packs for COD4 etc. Is this double standards?
I think what we need to look at is more fundamental. EA consistently have full licenses for everything in their games – they obviously pay the money for it. In some cases they buy exclusivity to make it difficult for any competition.
Does anyone remember the NFL 2K series? I actually preferred that game to Madden and it had a growing fanbase. EA then purchased EXCLUSIVE rights to the NFL franchise, screwing the 2K game. Who would buy an American Football game that wasn’t based on the NFL?! The game was put on the scrapheap.
We don’t know how EA/Konami go about getting licenses for these games, but I think that there should be a level playing field where EA doesn’t bully competition out of the market.
They’re afraid of competition for their inferior titles – it’s some sort of gaming monopoly!
i really think they should bring that out. but u shudnt have to pay for it. but if its good then why not if it includes boots, transfer updstes, and maybe even a couple of new stadiums wud be well good. i wudnt pay more than 3 pounds tbh unless its fantastic! i can see other peopels argument towards pes 2008 and the reason why is was crap, i can understand cleary why people are angry,same here with me wasnt happy with it, exept the day when i get it. but will we feel the same towards the end of nxt year with pes 2009 , i really hope not. pes 2009 looks good from the editing videos ive seen on W.E.N.B quite impressed on what ive seen so far!:)

Just do the transfers yourself and whoever changes the players stats is a cheater. i bet all you city fans make your team all 99 each!
For a football game DLC should be free if it just contains transfers, (we could afterall do them ourselves) but I don’t mind paying for extras in other games like maps etc.

i totally agree, but i still feel that konami owe us for buying 2008, they should be punished for never fixing the online at all. i feel we should be able to get a good chunk off 2009 by trading in 2008!and the stores should not be hit konami should be hit!they obviously will not do that so a dlc for free should be mandatory for them
pes had a licensing clause which would only allow them to amke transfers up untill the second of august hence deals made after that aren’t in the game.. so once gain its all thanks to fifa.. its no biggie we always have an influx of option files.. which you dont have to pay for!!
I enjoy having boots to choose from, so i would get then anyways but aslong as it doesnt cost any more than $15 AUD thats fine :)

I’m just wondering, if we did download the paid DLC from Konami & install it, would that mean we could go the updated teams online & also does this mean if i were just to get an updated option file somewhere can i not use the updated teams online cos it wasnt an official konami one???
If it meant having the up to date teams available for online play then i suppose i would pay for the update & install it even though i would be doing so through gritted teeth but i guess there isnt many choices.
it would be extremely stupid if konami decide to charge for dlc updates in feb. the rosters are way out of date as it is and we’re still paying for this out of date roster on release crap. why should we pay more in feb. fix your principles konami, listen to your loyal fans and stop chasing fifa’s success model.

for the edit mode to get real emblems and sponsors and stuff how do you get it onto the ps3 do you need the camera thing? or can you use a usb and put stuff onto that then download it onto the ps3?

I agree! why pay for an update of squads when u can easily do it yourself! if they add new boots, stadiums or even change the appearance of some players, (hair styles etc) then this should be free! nobody will pay 600-800G (xbox360) for it not a chance!
Everyone should put the stats what they feel the players deserve i put players up and down teams like newcastle have better stats than they deserve and if a player in real football is playing amazing i will put his stats up a bit.

post 30. Good point but i do a few masters leagues with diffrent teams through out the year so come christmas i will know if any good young players are playing well i will put their stats up. And if say any new big money signing are playing poor in say the priemiership i will put them down a bit. Roll on the 17th
i’m a little naive when it comes to downloading option files i have a ps3 and usually prefer to just edit things myself but if it is true that all the transfers from 2nd of august onwards are not updated then that seems alot of work so i may just download the option file can anybody tell me how i go about this??
yes you can get a usb stick and put emblems and stuff on there then plug it into your ps3 and away you go
konami don’t owe us jack sh*t! im i right in saying we have enjoyed the pro evo series until since it first hit the market. they messed up for pes08 but i am willing to let that go because of the fact of the transformation to next gen there was more to take into consideration during the creation of the game. this time round for pes09 they have taken the feedback on board and bettered themselves and are probably more used to the fact they have more memory on disk to play with.
as for DLC if its just squads, stats and transfers that gets updated for cost there’s no point as you very well know it can be changed yourselfs in the edit.
it could be the fact that new players might make a name for themselves that are not in the game so konami may create these new players with the commentary sorted out to say their names etc
realistically the thing that would make me buy DLC for say £2.99 – £3.99 would be all of the above (as long as it doesn’t interfere with a WENB pes 09 option file executed into the game) and maybe a few new stadiums, boots, balls, edit options etc etc

Konami def owe us, cant be expecting us to fork out cash every year when they never have licences, hardly change the game, do not keep promises like, the game will have a total re-vamp. Konami have let themselves down big time this year with the new demo not alot of effort has been made, players not up to date, concentrating on making stadiums looking better!!wtf. i think they are so out of touch with the true pro evo fan. ask 10 people and how many would suggest making the stadiums better? they seem to be ignorant when it comes to improvements. easier said then done, but can they get the shooting techniques of players sorted? commentary? nets? they dont seem to listen to us so why should we give them £30-£every year. the additional content should be free after last time. Call of duty added maps on their game and i bought them, they were online when they said they would be, alot of effort had gone into them and they work no problem. i dont mind paying to a company that makes the effort and delivers. Konami have gone down in my estimation and need to deliver, cant charge after last years farce.

I agree so why have Konami gone backwards and ruined the gameplay with 08? They didnt have to touch Pro evo 6 for gameplay but they did. Just think they’re concentrating / modifying on the wrong things. I’ve always bought the game regardless of licences its just if they ask for money on top, what for? I think more licences would be a start.

PES 09 will be updated with current transfers before release. It was just a demo for f*ck sake. There are still changes to be made after the Demo. Also, If you played the FIFA demo as well you would have seen that Shevchenko was still at Chelsea and Robinho still at Real Madrid. Their full game was updated in time.

It worked! I can, wa hay! Ok, so my opinion is that if its stuff like stadiums, boots, few new teams etc. Which i suspect it will be, then sadly, yes i would probably buy it. For say 4 quid or so. Obviously edits an transfers can be done yourself, so thats pointless payin for. I just think it would breath a little bit of fresh life into a game that i usually end up playing all year anyway.

Post 55, ME, I presume your talkin about the Pes09 demo? Ive scored quite a few from crosses and divin heading it in. Outwit yer defender an get bit a space, then double tap circle, an tap square with yer rushin man in the middle. Oh bugger, wish i hadnt told you now, everyone will be doin it!
If konami want to make me pay for DLC it should include the following. Another entire league so i can have both the championship AND bundesliga, more kit layers, more boots, more options in the edit mode like untucked shirts, etc.
A lot depends on what the new content is. If it’s merely squad updates and a few bug fixes then I really wouldn’t pay for it. It should be free.
However, if there’s new content (i.e. basically we’re talking about an expansion pack with updates, new features and more variety in the game) then yes – if the content interested me then I’d purchase it.
So – going back to the original post – I don’t think it’s right to be automatically suspicious of DLC. You don’t actually know what the value of the proposed content is.

For games like Rock Band, I don’t mind paying for the extra DLC because of copyright etc etc. I understand why they charge. At the end of the day if Konami do one update in February, I would be outraged if they charged for it.
If they added something substantial like say Scenarios, I’d be fine with that. But if they charge for updating teams, extra boots and stadiums I’d be pretty pi$$ed, especially seeing as I know people who have the retail copy who have said the teams are not up to date.
In regards to FIFA’s live weekly thing, I think it’s a joke. Changing players form based on how they play that week is useless to me, as whenever I play I want all my players and all the oppositions players on their best form for a good match. Plus, how much different will it be, if Rooney has a bad week you’re hardly gonna drop 10 or more off his shooting stats. I just see it being so insignificant.

You know what, Evo is like a religion to me and I always thought it had the more intelligent fans but, alas, i am wrong (not in all instances mind).
I was playing 5 the other night and, yes, it was great gameplay but it looked like s**t. i know we’re in an age of next gen (god im beginnig to despise that word) but like 67 – anonymous said how many people do you think they have on their team. It looks lush now, plays lovely and above all what a lot of haters fail to recognise is that while you’ve bitched all year about 2008…….you’ve played it all f**kin year like I have. Jeez

We saw this sort of thing happen with instruction manuals over the past seven or eight years. It used to be that you would get all the information you needed to play a game in the instruction manual. Then company’s conveniently started making instruction manuals paper thin, and along came £12.99 strategy guides. Now in alot of games all the info you need to play a game are no longer in their, because they can charge you an extra £10-15 on a strategy guide.
As long as the inclusion of the DLC, doesn’t mean were going to get shafted on the retail copy of the game, then it could be a good thing, but knowing how alot of company’s operate, they will adopt the philosophy of why give something away for free, when you make an extra few quid by charging people for it.

thanks wolvesfan. i must admit that i will still use the option file whenever its done (not too fussy when) but we’ve never had a fully licenced game so I don’t get why people are getting heavy about something they never had before.
Guys, we’re a community…….the option file will sort out kits and above all and most importantly, the gameplay is awsome. Please remember this when you’re getting frustrated at Konami for making Jolean Lescott’s hair looking normal :-)

I agree with the writer, it’s like they sell you an incomplete game, and in other to FULLY enjoy a game you have to buy more crap! I have a question for the writer, or anyone that knows their info. and could answer it. I live in North America (U.S.), why they don’t promote so much the game over here? Fifa literately makes a hole new cover just for North America, with players that we could relate, I belive Fifa 09 in UK has Ronaldihno as the Main guy, and North America Version has Ochoa( Mexican golie) as the Main guy. Another question, why does Konami doesn’t get the mexican legue? Being a Mexican myself, we love the game. I buy Fifa too, and the main reason is because of the Mexican league.

I don’t do DLC.
But I don’t mind free updates, such as the awesome Burnout ones.
I’ve always felt like I was being ripped off paying that much for half baked games all these years, but the superb gameplay always made me forget about that. Chances are whatever DLC they release should be in the game from the start and if not then make it free. I’d still buy them though especially if they added stadiums, just can’t help myself =(

I have come to the conclusion that the people that comment on this site wake up in the morning and say ….. ummm what can i moan about today ? Why is everyone so negative ? I for one liked pes 2008 , yes it had its flaws and the online was a joke but it was still the best football game at the time . I am extremely looking forward to pes 2009 ! the demo is amazing . So cmon guys have a bit of optimism .

What people seem to be overlooking is that if DLC was released with updated squad lists, then EVERYONE would have to have it in order to play online with common squad lists, etc. How would Konami be able to match players online when there were 2 groups of gamers- those who had bought the update and those who had not? For this reason then won’t the update have to be free and available to all? I dunno- how are they sorting that on FIFA online, with the live season being charged for?

in Demo i didn;t like 1 thing.
when i was atacking with some players(doesn’t matter who was that) and when in statistic shows that player foot is Right or left (doesn’t matter) , he always hits with his foot. never uses another.and ball is always over the keeper.never strikes on the target.he always misses.. i hope this is only in demo. and it won’t be in full Release..hope so..

ANY BODY ELSE SEEN THIS HAPPEN? when playing the demo my friend shot with torres and it hit the cross bar, the ball then hit the keeper (Van Der Sar) in the back of the head and looked to be going in, except it didnt and rolled out to the side of the keeper, as this waS happening tho, torres had started to run off celebrating, he then noticed the ball, stoped and turned and ran to kick the rebound in but was beaten to the ball by a defender who kicked it out, i have never seen this before!!! I think its a quality little addition from konami, players celebrating when they think they have scored, as in real life.

if what is Speculated is true, then that would suck, i don’t think they(konami) if true,to release a half-ass version of the game and releasing a patch you have to pay for later is a smart move. i don’t mind free updates, not because we deserve it but because most of us here will pay for the full price of the game once it hits stores. Unless they make us pay less for the retail price, and collect some from the downloadable patches. But i highly doubt that would happen nor do i think that’s a good idea..this reminds me of Apple computers. There are newer firmware for the ipod touch released every now and then. and you have to pay a whooping amount of 20 dollars…cheap if you’re american and crappy if you’re almost a third world country. i think for the price of things this days, it just sucks that this conglomorate ****amamies take advantage, If Fifa wants to do the adidas thing, good for them..online play for PES should allow us to edit players, i know they stop “cheating” because of a selected few who will cheat their pants off, but there should be like a monitoring system for over the top cheaters..i dont know..i wish i knew..

PES2008 was the best that was out there and the only flaws were the speed of the game and online! 90% was awesome for me! I played it all year and up to last week!….before the 2009 demo came out… :)
has this ever happened to anyone? 1. your player celebrates a goal only to find out the ball never went in? 2. You’ve just scored a goal, but was ruled out for an offside, only to see the replay and find out u were onside?
both situations happened to me in just one match…i almost threw my dpad on the tv..y’all should expect more

PES 4 AND PES 6 Were my fav pro evo games 2008 did suk and i stopped playing it after about a month and went back to pes 6 on ps2. Konami will be back on form with 2009 me thinks.

In FIFA, in case you are unware, you get ONE free league with Adidas Live Season. When you purchase the game, their is a serial number on the back of the manual. The first time you connect online, it asks you which league you would like.
But, to get more updates for more leagues, you need to pay.
Who gives a fuk about fifa it sucks cold hard wood and so do fifa fan boys.
I think Konami should follow EA and Criterions footsteps with what they done to Burnout. These weren’t little fixes; they changed the whole complexion of the game.
Instead of having DLC, the patch should be compulsory if you go online, the way sony forces you to update to the latest firmware so that you can access the playstation store (if that makes sense…) By doing this, everyone will have the same update once they go online without the need to revert back to the default option, i.e. Saha at Man U, Finnan at Liverpool etc. I don’t mind being “forced” to update PES!
They could have it in a way that the game version changes for example, from V1 to V1.2, like they did in PES 2008 (which did Fook all!)
BTW, played a PC version of Fifa 09 and it was faykin terrible! Goals still go in too easily and everyone seems to finish like Torres! If only there was a hybrid of FIFA/PES, imagine what that would be like…

Don’t you watch football games? It happens in real life too, refs makes mistakes all the time! And yes it sucks to get a call like that against you, but it adds realism to the game. I played my brother in the demo and he made a sliding tackle and I went for the dive and got the penalty. I was laughing my *ss off and he was bitching about it, but it adds realism. In another game he clearly tripped me but no whistle from the ref. Also I made a clean sliding tackle against the CPU and the ref blew the whistle for penalty. I was mad, but hey sh*t happens! Deal with it!
Change of subject but as it is now just under a week until release could someone please tell me the cheapest place to get it from?
I’ve seen it at asda for £34.93 and Blockbuster advertising it for £39.99 with a free football and £15 off next game voucher (might be the best bet with COD5 out soon) but if anyone knows anywhere else please post.
I’d prefer not to order off the internet as i did this last year and didn’t get the game for a week after release.

I just played as ManU v Liverpool on the top difficulty and won 4-1 and it was 1-1 with 10 minutes left. (I have applied the length hack and played a 15min game)
The player models are crappy and the game speed feels a bit slow but Konami have improved the cheaty qualities of the CPU team.

Hmm..just tried it on LOW details and it runs crisper although I stil think the ball moves too slow and floaty when you have a full power shot.
