Pes Off!! 23rd October 2008

So a week on from launch, I’m almost dreading asking people what they think.

I’ve been monitoring initial comments from last friday, which have been a mixed bag.

But with a week’s worth of play, more concrete opinions are being formed by you guys out there no doubt.

I am still working my way through the game, and haven’t sampled the master league, become a legend or much in the way of online play.  I want to take my time doing so, to form as complete a view on the game as possible.

I expect to offer a review of what I think of it in about 3 weeks time.
I think for a lot of people, the two key factors to measure success are the gameplay and the online playability.  If these two factors are up to scratch, then most people will put up with other less satisfactory elements of the game.

I would like to offer an initial impression of the game, but by no means is it my final opinion of the game.  I should also point out that my point of reference is PES6, since PES2008 didn’t exist for me.

I think I would describe the game as aesthetically pleasing (certainly a mark up from PES6 on the 360!).  I am not too sure I like the dribbling abilities in the game.  I seem to be able to find it fairly easing to jink into the penalty area from my own half with any player fairly easily – this being on top player mode.

I will play it a lot more to decide whether or not this is something that is commonly done, or whether my initial playing style is permitting me to do so.  I hope you guys understand what I mean!

I think this is a very attack focussed game.  Defending is very hard.  I find I can’t press the man on the ball with physical presence, to force their direction of travel.   In PES6 I could force a winger to play the ball out with pressure on the touchline.  This isn’t quite as easy now.

The whole dribbling at right angles at pace and ease of turning between players is a little offputting for me.  Perhaps as I play it more this will grow on me, but for now, its a bit strange.

That’s all I will say on the game for now, since I don’t want to appear negative about the game, especially since I don’t think I’ve given it a fair crack of the whip.  I want nothing more than to be able to declare this THE footy game for me, but I want to do so in a methodical, clinical fashion – not like a loved-up little puppy.

I’ve also been suffering from a cold since the weekend, which has meant that I’ve not been as mentally astute as I would like to think I normally am.  As I reach normality, I think I should be enjoying the PES experience a little more.

Now that PES has been launched, we will be expecting a fair amount of churn on the site.  This is to be expected, since many people only check PES sites for details of the game pre-launch.  But we at pesgaming.com would really appreciate it if you could show us your support through comments to let us know that you guys appreciate the PES experience we offer you.  If there is any type of improvement you guys think we could make to the site, then please let us know, and we’ll see if we can do more to serve the PES community at large.

Our goal is to be THE place for PES, and that is only possible with your help.  So help us to help you!

Thanks for reading.

Totally agree Dougiedonut i am reserving my opinion on the game until I’ve had a good bash at it, with every new PES title this is always adjustments needed because each one plays differently once i think im over the initial settling in period i think i will enjoy PES 2009 until then it’s keep on playing and trying to master how this one plays.

    Great post as usual Dougiedount

  2. mo Says:

I think it is good that you give the game a try. I think it would have been better that you tried it out a lot during 1 week’s time and then gave your review. I think it is a joke that someone writing about PES has skipped a version. Not very trustworthy to my opinion

  3. Arian Says:

I´ve played it for a week now and like everything except the online play. Even though i have a good connection and play against other with good connection there are some incredible framrate blur/issue that makes the game unplayable. It feels like the game suddenly becomes unsynched and speeds up !The ball leaves the foot and is suddenly somewhere else mostly where you did´nt intend or the with the opposition suddenly. If you for instance play against Messi his immense speed together with this ****up makes defending a nightmare. I also hate the double and the tripple “thud” sound effects when the ball, very unnaturally, bounces between you and the opponent. do you think there will be more patches released to fix the online issues ? One love PES

  4. spain Says:

Have been playing for about about 5 days now and while i think it is an improvement over pes 08 is it just me or os much more difficult,i have been playing on top player most my life but have had to drop to regular to have any chance of winning, may’be i need time to get used to controls.
One major problem is online spent all last night trying to get a game no joy very frustrating, am connected fine but can never find quick match or any other game i will keep trying so hopefully it changes.

  5. RobotRodney Says:

I think the game should be judged as a ’seperate entity’ to all previous versions, if possible. I myself never bothered getting pro 08 on ps3, but had it on ps2, and now have 09 on ps3, cos i felt it had made steps in the right direction. I.e., much improved edit mode, b a legend, and champs league. It is trying its best. So far, i think the game offline is fantastic. Loving b a legend, its a whole new ball game playing as one player, and working as part of a team, and i find myself even celebrating when a team mate scores, and im just sat watching waiting to come off the bench! However, online for me has been a bit of a disaster. Its confusing in the lobbies for starters. And the games themselves are laggy, teleporting, slow loading affairs. So frustrating then. Anyone wanting to buy this game to play online only, i would say, at this moment, dont bother. It may improve. It may not. My connection is 6-8 meg. And im even using an ethernet cable. Ive played people with a green light, i.e, a good connection also, but it is no better, and still not much fun. Offline it is however, excellent i reckon.

  6. RJ Says:

Im obviously a real saddo and ive given the game quite a fair crack.

Im was the type of player that liked playing online on PES, as soon as i got the game i quickly set the online name up, usernames and passwords and they i was online. I actually preferred the way the 2008 online played. I know it was a nightmare to begin with but after loads of games i got used to it. Ive found that in the 2009 version, if someone has got a rubbish connection then the game will have lags. However saying that i still had a few great games online.

I played the legend mode, set all the facial stuff etc, and was really surprised how great it was. really challenging and i found it hard to play (in a positive way). I made my player a CF, a real crap position, should have gone for WF.

Now the great thing for me was the champions league, honestly this was amazing, i played it for the first time today and it was really good, great play, challenging and i got the feeling after scoring of “get in there”, and i ended up losing and was really gutted.

I hope the online is sorted soon with a patch of something but as i said before i still had a few good games and sure i will continue to do so.

  7. Hallelujah Says:

Screwed PES forever! SEABASS is either a liar or incompetent to admit his failure. He promised that online play is top priority and has made sure to get the best for customer. This is still problem no 1. How could you still sell this game to the market. You are BASTARD! Just go away and go become a striper instead. You are good for nothing! I hope I hurt you to the bone!

  8. Arian Says:

RobotRodney >>>> Thanks RobotRodney teleporting that was the word I was looking for ! Extremely annoying ! Messes up the whole online game ! Imagine playing against a teleporting S.W.P or Messi or C. Ronaldo !

  9. Hammer Says:

I love the game, Be a Legend is a great addition. So addictive that i’ve only played one Master Legaue game since I got it last Thursday.

I’ve had no problem at all online. I have a green connection and played against a friend with a blue connection but had minimal lag.

  10. RABBIT Says:

    FINAL VERDICT:
    OFFLINE = REALLY GOOD
    ONLINE = SHOCKINGLY BAD

  11. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

WELL ,POSTERS 3.4,5,6,7,8,YOU ARE ALL HAVING PROBLEMS ONLINE,THANK GOD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE,PEOPLE ON HERE WERE CALLING ME ALL KINDS OF NAMES ,SKINFLINT ETC ETC ,DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER AND SO ON,BUT IT IS NOT ONLY ME.I KEEP SAYING,THEY HAVE MADE BIG PROMISES AND SOLD US SHORT,AGAIN,HALLELUJAH,WELL PUT.I AM TERED OF THOSE GUYS COMING ON HERE SAYING ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME IS GREAT.ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THEY ARE EASILY PLEASED.EVEN IF THEY DON’T PERSONALLY HAVE ANY ONLINE PROBLEMS,WHAT ABOUT THE REST,SRE THEY GOING TO PLAY ONLINE ON THEIR OWN,BECAUSE ALOT OF US ARE HAVING PROBLEMS.EXCLUDING ME THERE HAVE BEEN 9 POSTS,OF THOSE 7 HAVE MADE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE ONLINE MODE,SO WHAT DOES THAT TELL.AND THERE ARE MANY MORE.AND HAMMER ,A BLUE LIGHT FOR CONNECTION,I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT,I THOUGHT IT WAS GREEN,YELLOW OR RED

  12. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

    MAKE THAT 8 COMPLAINTS

  13. Lynham Says:

I have been on Be a Legend all week..except a Champions league campaign with Atletico Madrid (whose default kit is shocking by the way, edited it myself as it annoyed me so much!) and have reached the semi finals so far…

But be a Legend as Hammer said is a top addition, i’ve gone through 2 seasons already!

Overall i think it’s a great game apart from online which lets it down..

  14. Celtic Shady Town Says:

Scored my first 35 yarder last night get in there.

  15. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

LYNHAM,GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU.AS YOU KNOW THE ONLINE IS TERRIBLE,SO I GUESS THAT IS THE REASON WE HAVENT HAD A GAME AS YET,AND EVENIF WE DO ITS NOT A CASE OF THE BEST MAN WINNING,ITS HOW THE SERVERS BEHAVE ON THE DAY,BUT WHEN,OR IF THIS PROBLEM IS SORTED ,THEN BY ALL MEANS BRING IT ON

  16. champ23ie Says:

    hi guys
i have been singing the new games praises for the past while but only lasty nite i sat down and played a good few online matchs! i have to say its RUBBISH

the game is perfect offline but the defenses are ridiculous and player movement atrocious. its not even an effort for people to score from the half way line. you would swear your defense is a bunch of 4 year olds with no concept of football

i scored some great goals and then had all my hard work undone by stupid walk ins or close range shots

does anyone know if the update will fix all of this? i hope so as i cant stand another year with no online! and some matchs are pretty good lag free but still the defense is non existant

    is anyone else experiancing this?

  17. Izpr Says:

I’ve been playing PES’09 in abaut 1 week and I think it’s big improvment since last game. I can only complain about the defense becouse the defense AI is week. It’s difficult to defend vs attack. For me it’s important that the defense and the attack are balanced. That can be most seen if you play online and it can be scored lot of goals. Last geme I playd online ended 5 – 5 (real – barca).
I think if yoy set defense play joypad on semi-assisted it is easier to defend, becouse you switched players as you want. Then you can wait for players like Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovis … with yor player and computer assisted player can help you with defens. This helps for me, but still it is more easier to attack.

  18. ramae Says:

how come no one comments on NO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ON MASTER LEAGUE or LEGEND!!!! How is it possible that the biggest signing for PES is only a seperate mode and not included on the most important modes!!!???? This is ridiculous! I was so happy to qualify winning the master league to play the champions and find myself playing once again EUROPEAN CUP! Having “official champions league” How come you have the licence to the cup but not to all the teams withing the cups? Well. The game is ok. 8/10 Tried fifa today, i think i will stick with PES, but will give a try a bit more weeks to take a final call. But wow, this is the closest shot fifa has. Many PES lovers are changing. Hope this is not the beggining of the end. Hope there is a patch to include champions league to the master and legend cups. Very bad seabass/konami

  19. monkeynuts Says:

just got my xbox back last night so i have only just started to play it. i must say started leg mode and played it for 9 hours last night this is the most fun ever. have played two games online no prob must be lucky can some one tell me is it just me or can you dive a lot and get away with it this time?

  20. ramae Says:

any diferece btw 360 and PC?

  21. RobotRodney Says:

Post 10, Rabbit, nice one. Sums all our thoughts up perfectly. Anyone out there with no online problems, count yourselves very lucky. Both of you.

  22. ste Says:

I’m very happy with game except for online and the lack of real names, kits, and transfers. I cant fix the online but have spent many hours sorting out my update which i have made available for all who wish to make the game look authentic.

I have made an update which includes real crowd noises for english teams along with every team in the games real strips, sponsors, emblems etc. Go to the page below:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=300267976585

    Relax and enjoy!

  23. Sha Says:

Ive cracked it!!!!! ever since last Thursday i have not stopped moaning about PES 2009 on PS3 I hated the AI, the clunkyness, the players first touch but I have finally found away to stop my defenders running about like headless chickens, a way to structure my midfield so 2/3 men are not going for the same ball.

The trick is simple – on the formation settings set your defence to play a deep line and dont let them try and play the offside trap you do this by selecting the letter C on the defensive strategy.
Also use the width of the pitch, edit players positions. I play both wingers hugging the touch line and this stretches the midfield creating more space in the middle and giving centre mids time on the ball, plus you will always have an outlet on the wings the opposition ave not picked up on my tactics and often leave them unmarked when i switch play quickly. I play 3 5 2 formation with 2 defensive midfield players 2 wingers and a attacking midfield player just behind the forwards.

Also i altered the attacking setting by making my 2 wingers and attacking mid to go forward when we are attacking.

Defensivly I didnt want my 2 wingers tracking back or my attacking mid you do this by altering the arrows in the formation settings.

To anyone who is hating pes 09 on ps3 at the moment, play around with the formations and find something that suits your game. Trust me it works brilliantly. I even got promoted with my Master League Team on top player which consists of **** players by doing this I finished 2nd. give it a try.

2 master league players who have been brilliant for me so far are Gervihiho (ivory coast player) and Agbonlahor oh and a mention for my captain Alou Diarra who poped up with some key goals from corners.

  24. Jason Says:

I have a problem, i can’t get the game to run on high details. everytime i click on it….The settings cannot be reflected due to the video card specifications….

    I used nVdia Geforce 8400GM

  25. Rossco McQueen Says:

PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2009 – so far so good for me. i am also yet to start the master league and become a legend but the few cups i’ve played i think the gameplay is back to best and the slow down makes it more realistic. i have played one match online which was brilliant no lag no problems with gameplay. the only thing that annoyed me was the konami id / game id crap i had to reinstate from my metal gear days for some strange reason but i got it sorted.

the game i played online was on ps3 excellent connection. i played as my beloved newcastle (tyneside) against a lad who was up for it as man utd. at this point of finding out which team i was up against i was nervous. we had the match played for 20 mins before he scored then from start to finnish it went 1-1 2-1(to me) 2-2 3-2(to me) 3-3 3-4 (to him) and it finnished 4-4 absolutly epic, a truely priceless online match especially if your mates are watching the tv wanting u to beat man utd chanting geordie tunes whilst having a few lagers.

this game has more than improved, it has bettered it self in so many ways. for things like champions league in master league, licences, graphics, cutscenes and other slight things these will be added and i’m sure when pes2010 hits the market it will regain it’s masterfull football crown but for now pes2009 still beats fifa09 hands down just on gameplay and for me always will!

  26. Joe Says:

    @22 ste

Shocking! why are u advertising for something thats shared for free on this site!

Props for The Muff for an already fantastic option file that he posted for free!

    Great article again Mr Donut.

  28. champ23ie Says:

    23 sha
thanks for that mate i usually play 3-4-3 but was struggling at my defense will try the deep line and mess around with it

does anyone know if update will change player settings to make your defenders actually defend??

    27 Steve From Stoke
im a bit of a noobie on the site and today was the first time have slated it the game is perfect as ever just annoyin a bit defending online!doesnt mean im not gonna lose a year of my life playin it :0

With option file, I’m in love with the game, Become A Legend mode is amazing too.

Stop b!tching guys and play the f*cking game and then you will get hooked and realise how good PES is for us!

  31. kingston Says:

hi lads, does anybody know when the patch konami are doing is due for release, also can u only download patches from the net on a usb stick or can u do it direct from my ps3?

    thanks

  32. apology to pes Says:

i would like to apologize to konami for being real ass lately. i have been slating the game recently, but since playing it last nite, my opinion has chnged some what. the game plays a little bit different then before, but once you get used it you’ll realise what a good game it really is. i have been its biggest critic so far, but maybe that was due to me playing online straight away before even playing any offline games. the lag online makes the game look very poor, makes defending silly. but once you play in offline mode everything changes? the game becomes slick and enjoyable.
before people start to slate this game, give the game some time and soon you will realise this game is back to its best, believe me.

  33. Anonymous Says:

    POST 16:
I completely agree with you!!! I’m getting so sick of playing really well in the oppositions half (scoring many decent well worked goals) and as soon as i lose the ball in my half, i’m being punished because the defending is utter sh!te, they stand about like a bunch of rugby players. I have no problem defending while playing offline, surely this new improved “emphisis on passing” game has lost its cause while playing crap players online who only need a Messi or Adriando to pick the ball up and run towards the by line and cuts the ball back. I rarely get to play somebody else online who a) has a decent connection (or no lag during the game) b) plays the passing game c) doesn’t always pick Barcelona or Brazil. If i wanted an arcade game, i would of ventured into the dark side and purchased a copy of Fifa.

    This sucks ass!!

  34. konami patch Says:

i imagine it will be done directly thru your ps3, hopefully it can amend a few minor issues within the game.
The first patch will offer updates to four Spanish sides (Athletico Madrid, Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valladolid) and will also tweak of number of kits and team rosters for some of the game’s other clubs. Additionally, 12 extra teams will be added to the UEFA Champions League lineup.
statement from konami “We hope the updated team data and new UEFA Champions League elements will show our ongoing support for PES 2009’s team rosters, and look to continually enhancing such sections in the coming year at no extra cost.”

  35. Shoayb_MUFC Says:

In my opinion, Konami have a done a great job in improving the gameplay and other minor aspects of the game. The edit mode is much better now, however, I think when you create player and put your own face on the player, they should allow you to edit the face a bit more…like for example facial hair…a chin strap or a goatie…etc.

I was really excited when I heard that Manchester United were going to be fully licensed. The only thing thats missing on that aspect is that theres no Old Trafford. And how you can only put in one chant for each team… I tried to edit and join a few together and saved it as mp3…it was under 1 min 27 secs as I read somewhere but still didn’t work. At the moment I’ve got the “Take Me Home” chant.

Playing the Champions League with Manchester United, in the finals now and I’ve got Juventus. It’s much harder to score which I think is brilliant because then you have to work harder and take your chances when they come. And I know, like many others, challenge is a good thing.

A great game…can’t wait for Konami to take out the update!

  36. emmex Says:

    @ Flowers Of Manchester:

seriously…there are better things to pray for than that. At least you have a girlfriend…gaming shouldn’t replace more important things in life…

    @ Steve From Stoke:

I agree…its as if the people are getting used to the game…I remember back when i got PES2006….i hated the first few games….but ever since it became really really good. Maybe this is the same with PES2009….i hope so…i think i will get it instead of fifa2009 this time…

  37. Arctic Monkey Says:

With regards to the poor online defending, could this be caused by the default online game difficulty being beginner?

I noticed while playing online that the difficulty is set to this & cannot be changed, unlike game length or condition which can be altered.

Surely this would cause the AI defenders to play poorly, as the would if playing against CPU offline on beginner setting. I would be interested to know if this would affect the AI.

On a more positive note, the legend mode is superb & is actually keeping me offline so I don’t whinge muchabout the lag. I played a few online games that were fine in the first few days, but progressively got worse, presumably due to more people buying the game & going online.

  38. Thomas Says:

I often read this blog but never comment, so here’s my view on PES2009 after a week of play.

Matches against the COM are a vast improvement on last season. The frame rate issues that drove everyone crazy seem to have been fixed and games move along nicely.

I also like how there’s absolutely zero load time between the first and second half, a subtle modification that immediately stood out to me.

Become a Legend is very strange to get used to. I find myself running around like a headless chicken chasing the ball and because my player is so crap to start of with, it is quite frustrating. However, I’m intrigued to see how this mode progresses when your players ability improves.

Online is still a bit disappointing for me. I’ve had some decent games where lag is at a minimum. I’ve also had some quite ridiculous matches where players appear from nowhere and the ball takes on a life of its own. Twice I’ve seen a goalkeeper take a goal kick and the camera not follow the ball, leaving the action going on, with me still looking at the oppositions penalty area – mental!

What I do wonder is how much of this is Konami’s fault? I mean, the colour indicators at the top of the screen signify the strength of each players connection if I’m not mistaken. Mine always seems to be yellow and when I play someone with the same strength signal, games tend to be OK. When my opponent has red status, I know lag is going to be a real issue. If somebody is on a naff wireless connection, then surely the game isn’t to blame for the issues? Correct me if I’m wrong of course, I don’t play many other games online so I don’t know.

Most frustrating for me (as many people seem to have noted) is how difficult it is to defend. I’ve played about 5 or 6 online games where my opponent has given the ball to Messi and I just can’t do anything to stop him. This might just be my lack of ability but it seems a bit far-fetched!

Bottom line is the game is pretty much as I expected with no real blockbuster improvements. I’ll get my £40s’worth out of it that’s for sure and if patches, updates and option files come out (which I expect they soon will) this will be a great game.

8/10 so far for me but could be a 9 or 10 if patches fix the online play and offer other goodies.

  39. Sha Says:

    @ 28

I find that if you use 2 wide men and edit the formation so they are both as far wide as they can go it creates a lot more space in the midfield, you should definitely try it. It gives your centre mids a little bit more time and space to pick out passes and the wide men will always be there giving options.

A little tip i like to use which works very well is when playing 3 5 2 with 2 defensive midfield players make sure they are big and good in the air. Alot of balls will come from goal kicks into there area so its really important to gain possession back and its also handy bringing them up for corners. partner this with 2 fast forwards and thats is my strategy. through the defensive and midfield the core is very strong physically and aggresive, the attacking mid will be the set peice specialist and creative passer, forwards will be fast, wingers are both good footballers technically – passing, technique, speed my defensive are big strong not dead slow and able to get the ball down and pass it.

  40. Pes off Pes 2009 Says:

The game sucks big time, clunky stiff gameplay, online is a disaster so the only improvements from last years game is the graphics, and to all those saying its better than last years so its a success, you got to be kidding me, its impossible not to improve on last years pile of S**T, but to promise complete overhauls and then to release another terrible game with polished graphics and every other area still rubbish is just plain unexceptable. Seabass needs to be sacked and a new team brought in who can deliver a next gen PES and not this crap.

Oh and before you guys start, dont own a copy of FIFA never have, but I refuse to give Seabass money for graphically polishing the same terrible, grids of movemnt PES code year after year.

I only played the game for 2 days and find it incredibly annoying with the motion blur (which isn’t in the demo), it’s almost as if my tv cant keep up with the pace of the game. Anyone find this annoying as well?

  44. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

  45. Jeff Says:

Ste – You tosser. I was on WENB the other day and everyone was saying about some loser selling chants and kits OF on ebay, well we’ve found the idiotic person doing it then. Why should someone buy it from you?????????? when there is a free one coming up. What is so great about your crowd noises, kits etc……….

Lads your decision but i would not give a penny to this toss pot who clearly wants to sell his shoddy work on this great site.

Guys don’t pay this guy on ebay he is clearly a fraud, who likes cheating people. I think he is the tyoe of person that would nick from his Gran.

  46. balcik Says:

I find that motion blur problem on online games very very annoying, in fact it makes me think PES2008 was better. This is a sort of lag isn’t it? I talked to someone from konami and tried to explain it to them but they said it should be a problem with the connection and there is nothing they can do about it.

However, as I mentioned on an another comment, this does not happen with PS3. So it is just xbox 360 :)

thanks man good to hear someone noticeing dont get me wrong i f***in love the game so much hardly able to sleep (why sleep when you can play) but it really does ruin it when your getting beaten by someone because of stupid defenses! and your right stop picking all the best teams!had great match ( apart from defences) last nite someone was roma i was newcastle! great to pick normal teams!people just want the ranking and afraid to see if they have genuine skill

Played it, done loads of edits, brilliant game.

Takes a while to get used to, but, now scoring 30 yard screamers, producing excellent pass & go moves and defending well.

It seems there are a lot of people who just haven’t got to grips with the game yet. Put the hours in and you will reap the rewards. I’m not big on the whole online thing (I get far too aggressive), but, offline is excellent. I hear a lot of people bemoaning the defending, but, offline, it is great. Sliding tackles work really well and the general positioning of the team is good.

As people have mentioned, start playing with formations, run mechanics etc and you will find what makes PES truly the only footy title worth having.

If you are a pick up and play gamer, then this game is not for you as it takes plenty of tweaking and a hell of a lot of practice to get the best out of it.

  50. the best Says:

all konami needed to do was sort the online game out and they would have had a winner.

they haven’t. PES6 was fantastic online, last years was a write off, this years is about halfway between the two. almost everyone has said they’ve a had “a couple of good games online” which just isn’t good enough. there is no excuse for poor online games bar connection. i’ve got an excellent conection and only play against “green” players, so i shouldn’t have any problems but its still all over the place.

    so disappointing.

  51. champ23ie Says:

    passthedutchie

not complaining of defence offline. offline best pro evo yet. but try online and you will see like 2 different games!im a big call of duty fan and you never have these kind of problems

    sha
thanks again mate gonna give it a bash tonight

    50 the best
is there any wway to filter players so you only get good connections ( green)

  52. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

guys the reason for poor defending online is the beginner defaulf which they have set, therefore when you get the unrealistic speed freaks on the ball,Messi and co ,then you have no chace of stopping them.Everybody goes for the top clubs to play, where is the skill in that, any and everyone can be good with them, because Mr Seabarse has made them that way.So im afraid were stuck with this awful mode,f**k knows how long.So once again we buy a game and restricted to its full use

  53. passthedutchie Says:

    Pes off Pes 2009

Why don’t you do as your name suggests!

  54. koko Says:

i feel like the this game isn’t complete and was rushed out into the market before being fully tested in all area’s. the game has little improvement, they should of delayed the release instead of trying to compete with fifa. true pes would wait, even if hurts but konami were more concerned about the quantity of money rather than the quality of product.

  55. madzie Says:

i want to know when the pes content update is due to come on the ps3 please?

  56. the best Says:

51 champ23ie – not that i know of mate, which is whats so frustrating, as a green players appear few and far between!

  57. The Big Cheese Says:

Madzie, the update is out the first week in November. I read on another site that apparently it will be available Monday 3rd November but i’m not totally certain they havent just assumed this based on Konami’s statement that it will be available in the first week of that month.

  58. Simon McDermott Says:

Dougiedonut, what I would like to see on this website mate is a Polling system of ideas for future additions of Pes.
Dan mentioned about becoming more involved with Konami, and as the guys on WENB have said, they’ve got around 2million fans who visit their site, and Pesgaming cant be that far off that number either.
My point is, if you guys collaborated with each other every year, to compose a top twenty or more new ideas for future Pes games, as voted for by MILLIONS of fans, and therefore customers of the game, Konami would definitely take these ideas on-board, because they would be backed by millions of fans from your websites.
Konami being Japanese based are creating games that are probably aesthetically, and musically suited for the Japanese market and because of this are falling short on the other global releases due to different cultural tastes.
They could even add an in depth do it yourself Little Big Planet style editing system, with loads of good working options for your own crowds, music, background screens, competitions, leagues, cups, or any other type of competition you could think up.
For example you could invent your own Past player, modern player mix in one competition for the national sides or club teams. You could have a nationality mix like you had a club team mix in Pes6, when you picked two club teams and the players from the two teams were mixed together.
They could also have simple things like up to date transfer option, where you can transfer players between clubs as and when it happens in real life.
Even adding classic club teams from the past under their champions league mode, meaning you could play 70’s Liverpool against 60’s united, or 2008 Man U against 99 Man U. You could even have an option to create your own Online tournaments and groups, like recreation of the 68 European Cup, Or reliving the 66 World cup, or any cup from any era. If Konami don’t want to do the player creations for all theses past players themselves, they could have a Little Big Planet style do it your self function, as I’m sure there’s aspiring 3rd parties, or gamers who would love to create theses types of modes if given the option, just as there’s loads of us each year who enjoy updating and fixing option files. With a Fully functional and inventive editing sweet in the fashion of the game Little Big Planet, you could pretty much Taylor any type of mode or tournament your heart desired, and then post them on the internet for other gamers to get involved in and it would certainly sort out the problems of people just choosing, Man U, Chelsea, Barcelona, or Brazil ect.
So if you guys at Pes gaming are really interested in having an active input in future editions of Pes, then together we should all put forward ideas in a monthly column by one of the bloggers, almost like a brain storming session. The best ideas from each month could then be gathered together and voted on by the readers of Pesgaming and the other Pes web sites. These ideas could then be compiled into a list and a spokes person representing the sites involved, could then present them with the weight of millions of fans and paying customers to Konami, or maybe even Seabass himself, to make sure the big kahoona sees it.
If our Ideas are still ignored at the end of this, then we know we are wasting our time, ever trying to get Konami to listen to their fans.
I know if it was EA they would snap it up in a heart beat and would probably give out prizes and watnot for the best ideas, but since I dislike EA and know that if Konami disappeared, then the football game genre will be finished and we’d be subjected to years of shallow, dull, football games and where would we be then.
What do the rest of you guys think? Do you think this would be a good idea? Let me know and if you think it is I will Email Dougie, Francis and Dan again to see if it could be set up.

  59. basKA' Says:

I dont agree with those who tell defending is tough.
its easy and dont u people know to..
    1) mark opponent players..(works fine in 2009)
    2) use defensive stance while opponent is along the wing
    3) the most important SLIDING TACKLE..many dont know to do this perfectly.the simple way is to hold (R1 + R2) run shoulder to shoulder.. while the opponent touches the ball , slide then… you will wonder, even if he is in the box.. the player is down and no whistle from ref.. this slide’ll be an world class.. u just need to clear it..

i’m dissappointed that the option of “SUPER CANCEL” is being removed or made tough, while in possesion.

    did any body notice that…

  60. passthedutchie Says:

    Simon McDermott

I’ve slated you in the past, so, I’ll give praise where it is due.

Good piece and very positive. I have a feeling it may well fall on deaf ears, but, a good idea anyway.

Post 22 Ste,Would you please sod off trying to sell your option file on this site, apart from p*ssing me off your wasting your time,we get it free anyway, its like tring to sell sand to a arab.Anyone with any sense wont be doing any editing or option files until the download patch is out anyway.

  64. joe PAIN Says:

I’ve been playing the game since it came out now, and its all starting to come together.

I’ve got the latest option file, with kits, transfers etc, and it looks great. Broadcast 1 camera angle makes the game look as close to the real thing as I’ve seen in a while, especially on Champions League mode.

Game play is great, while a little frustrating in the dribbling department, but I think that will come with time, and the long through ball from your own half feels like it should do, rather than the annoying toe stab from last years edition.

Scoring goals (and stopping them going in!) is alot more challenging and so much more fun to get into, I find myself wanting to make an amazing diving stop with a defender as much as I do catching a long shot just right and seeing it stream towards the top corner…

Online (for me personally) has been great. Legends mode is so much fun, and something completely differnet to what I would normally do. I’ve no idea who Im playing with half the time, but I’ve had some top through balls from some of you! Network mode is also fine for me, playing with next to no lag issues at all.

Edit mode is a triumph this year, with some of the guys making some amazing looking kits complete with sponsors and emblems etc which let the last edition down massively. The MP3 add on is also a great touch, I’ve been wanting that for ages!

Overall so far, Im really impressed, I didnt expect the most realistic footballing experience ever known to man, becaeuse, well I dont want it to be *too* realistic, otherwise you would get some awfully drab affairs! It is a massive improvement from last years game, and 2010 is set to be really *really* good.

  65. bal Says:

the cards are too easily given out and tackles are shocking as i win the ball but a yellow card is nearly always given…and online does need to improve it is playable at times but still needs sorting out,,,i also ave been avin some problems logging in sometimes..does tht happen to ny1 else??overall so far the game is about 8.5/10

  79. Steve Says:

    Hi All,

I have been a fan of PES since the days of International Super Star soccer on the Nintendo 64. Many a year I laugh at the fact EA’s team says “next year we’ll be the best” and every year they fail.

Until this year. I have only had the game for 2 days but I know already that I hate it. The one standout for PES over the years was the amazing gameplay. On the Xbox360, the gameplay is shocking.

The gameplay is slow and robotic. It’s like they have tried to slow it down and instead the ball travels like it is waterlogged or like you are using a medicine ball. The players feel like they are running with a 100kg weight wrapped around their waist. For some reason their acceleration is all off.

It is that bad that I dont want to play it any more. It saddens me to say this but I went and bought Fifa ‘09 and I am thoroughly impressed. Its still not as great as the brilliant Pro Evo ‘05 but it is closer to the quality we normally expect from Konami.

Online, by the way. Forget about it. Lag time is still there. Its not as bad as in the past but its still shocking.

I hope to heavens above that the guys at Konami do a great deal of work to bring out the ultimate game next year. For me, my copy of Pro Evo 09 is already up for sale.

    Steve

Please try and convice me otherwise. I want to like the game so much but I am really dissapointed.

Sorry to say but my PS3(first 60gb UK version) has blur continually which PES’s me off espcially when demo runs fine.

  81. Arjun Says:

I really liked PES 2009 till now ( xbox user ), but ya, am holding myself till its gets on me .. PES 2009 is obv way better than wat pes 2008 was. PES 09 was a step ahead from PES 6. PES 08 shud have been something like PES 09 honestly.
I’m a dedicated fan of PES series but am worried bcuz FIFA is having giant leaps , and PES is still inching ahead. Every year FIFA has massive improvements compared to PES, N specially i didnt like the fast turn aside , which every damn player can do in the game.. which makes it very unrealistic.

N shooting is i guess made more difficult, which i really appreciated. there’s no way, you cud just bang from newhere a rocket from 35 yards from cron in ML.

I think the red cards are less often this time, even if u just tackle a nasty one from behind. but its better than what it was in PES 08.

The most let down part of this PES 09 is commentary ( now thats a shock ) .. There has been absolutely NO new lines added to their sedative commentary.. Just that champions league line which one of the commentators says, thats it.. rest every damn line is same from last yr’s.

Y can’t they just do something abt it really, if not andy gray n martin tyler in the game, there are pretty decent ones, Rob hawthrone , Ian Dak, Alan smith.. They are very good, certainly not martin andy level, but fans will be very happy to hear them rather than listening to silly bozo’s. I honestly changed the commentary lang to French..
I really wanted Japanese commentary. is there any way to get it ??

  82. Manu Says:

For all you that hates how the online is going on there is a petition on the web, please sign, maybe KONAMI will listen, if not, I wont be bying next version. Why I traded in PES 6 omg :/

    Here is link: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/petition-sign.cgi?Leyen65b

To all PES maniacs – go there and fight for a great game!

And to all FIFA fanboys – your game is so lame, its easy, ball is sticking to the foot, so unnatural.

  83. ockrass Says:

It is really great to see the fans of PES state their opinions on the new release of the game.

I have played every single release of this game since ISS Pro and to be honest I have gradually lost interest. In my opinion, the game has not changed positively in the last 3 years. This year’s release is even worse. With all the money Konami has made over the years being the #1 in footie simulation, how comes Fifa has better online system? How comes Fifa continues to hold full licensing? What is Konami not doing?

I have recently started looking at Fifa and I am honestly impressed. Although the game play isn’t as polished as PES, they have proven to have made great strides in graphic detail and animation. EA seems to be moving in the right direction.

My opinion is that Konami is not really interested in moving the game much further than where it is now. No matter how flawed the game is (online, invisible field around players during throw ins, defensive problems, outdated animation, licensing and lack of tricks) they always sell millions of copies of the title.

I will still support PES but I have found myself now playing Fifa more because of the realistic animations, tricks and online gaming that it offers.

I think Seabass needs to go! He has constantly promised changes that never appear in the releases. I was surprised they released a game this year because at one point he said there would be no release this year so that the Konami would have enough time to bring a much improved game to the nex gen system.

    Money talks…bullxxxt walks.

  84. CROFREAK Says:

MANU i save signed the petition…online is a joke totali unresponsive….no defence only attack …2008 online was far better than this crap… MESSI,IBRA,ETO and company should be in the GOD OF WAR GAME not in the PES 2009 especially online!! KONAMI do you hear us ONLINE IS A JOKE !!!!

  85. ockrass Says:

    Manu,

    I have also signed.

    84. I agree, and to think this has been a problem for how long. Is it that they cannot afford to put the proper infrastructure such as reliable, efficient servers along with competent sys admin to run a lag free online environment? Or is it that they just don’t care enough. Because if they did, there is no way they should have released the title with this still being a huge problem.

What other high ranking sport title has online problems such as PES? someone please enlighten me.

Seabass needs to go, I refuse to pay him another single cent.

  86. Paulieboy Says:

Hi been playing for a week now. Mainly master league did not like it a first but after getting used to it i am impressed. Played a couple of games online not to much lag but defending is poor.Offline Through ball is getting on my nerves when you want to do a short through ball to a player next to you it always seems to get stopped by the oppisition cutting out because there is no pace on it.I have now opted to just do a normal pass instead in these situations. But playing a lob through ball which has never really worked on any of the pes titles all of a sudden has become an option esp if you have a speedy striker or winger it works wonders. How sha got promoted on master season 1 i will never know took me 3 seasons on pro. I could of done better with transfers though. Master league players that have worked for me are. GK KIM U DON. CMF BRADLEY.SMF GAMBINO. CF OKAKA AND F.INZAGI there are more but dont want to bore you.

  87. uball Says:

first and foremost, to Simon McDermott, bravo..that’s a good idea..and now here’s the bad news,Japanese are very proud of what they have “achieve”, no diff about konami, and asian mentality(i’m asian in an asian country mind you, and yes i do know what i’m talking about) has a i’m superior and you’re not kind of thing going on. Regardless of what you may say now as an end user, you’re like nothing to them, because they know better than the fans, according to how they think. This mentality spreads around asia like wild fire. Sometimes it gets pretty annoying, It’s like if an engineer has a very creative profitable idea, the manager will shoot him down and ask him not to rock the boat..that’s Asia for you. i wish Konami will change otherwise EA will win, and EA is a small company eating conglomorate, which i dont like…but i do like the fact that EA listens to their fans…wish Konami did that..i’ve said this so many times..

  90. The Big Cheese Says:

I’ve just played online, there were only about 500 people in total on all of the servers and i had the best online game of pes i’ve ever had. Was exactly the same as the offline play, no lag or any problems what so ever. More over, i was chelsea and went 3-0 up vs Barcelona only for them to come back and level the game at 3 – 3 with 15 mins to go. Last min i got a penalty which Deco thumped into the top corner to seal a dramatic and truely epic 4 – 3 victory.

For anyone who hasnt played as Chelsea yet, Joe Cole is immense!

  91. Manu Says:

Thanks for the response to the online problem.

I did send them an email asking if they will fix the online problems, just wondering when, if ever, they will respond and 99% they will send me a standard message like:

“servers are SOMETHING due to maintanence, sorry for inconvienience bla bla”

I had an inconvienience for a period of 1 year and dont make me wait any longer.

How difficult is it to make stupid 1 on 1 when other games ex. Call of Duty 4 can make perfect lag free 12 people in one place and there is hell of things going on there.

I can list a number of games without any online problems or with some bugs but producer actually do care about the game after the realese.

Last year was a joke and I was waiting like a kid for 2009 especially that SEABASS told us “Online is our top priority” BULL S#!T.

The gameplay is great with some bugs but I think those bugs are only laziness beacouse if they are only polishing last year game. Better would be if they get PES 6 online mode and gameplay as it is.

Greetings to all solid guys out there.

  107. Fuzz Says:

steve (79) and ockrass (83), you’re spot on with your comments. I don’t think anyone that truly loved PES from PES1 would find this game acceptable. The series seems to be going backwards instead of progressing. The errors they’ve made are too many to state but a few of the most unforgiveable are:-

*Dribbling with the ball feels laboured like the ball is attached to a chain.
*Changing direction with a player is far too rigid, and can only be performed in 8 directions!
*Online is a disgrace. Compare to COD4 with 10+ online and FIFA 09 with TWENTY players all at once and it is just unacceptable.
*Expecting the fans to create their own playlists/chants/kits etc seems to be an admission that Konami can’t/won’t do it correctly themselves.
*The two most expensive transfers in British football history are not in their correct club sides.

It’s just not fun anymore. I remember the days I was content to cane Master League for up to twenty seasons! I played one game last night and had to put on FIFA, which really made me sad. The online play was actually BETTER on the LAST GEN consoles! I’ve never even thought of it, even with PES08, but I’ll be trading in my copy of PES09.

I liken PES to AC Milan. PES was the best in the world a few years ago, consistently producing a high level of quality. But it has stagnated by leaving the same old components, simply expecting results to come. Unfortunately, I think PES is now in the UEFA Cup of football games as opposed to Champions League

  113. emmex Says:

    @ manu

oh….so one cant adjust the graphic settings for PS3?

To me the idea of a gaming console that can play online, really never made sense…PC gaming is far more editable, upgradable and controllable…If the game lags, i just set the graphics down…or get more ram. But with a game console like xbox/PS one is more limited.
Not to mention screen adjustment advantages….

  116. Ansar Says:

PES2009 the best insatllment since pes6 this has evrything that fifa doesnt have; graphics, gameplay, UEFA Champions League, fifa may have the licences but they lack innovative gameplay that PES2009 brings fans all over the world, my cousin whos 27 years old by the way, has just admitted that this game has no age limits and he will be playing pes till his old and frail, he has played fifa 09 (the demo because i dont like it i never bought it)and found it to have an age limit (17) that will get boring when you hit 17 as after this i find that you want to play more tactical football rather than showing 15 different skills with Ronaldinho and then losing the ball to Dave Kitson, theres no point of skills if there isnt any actual gameplay, i believe that the radar on PES2009 has more depth than Fifa 09 gameplay. so playing PES 2009 i have however found that the computer makes descions for you, when ever there are 2 or more players around the player with the ball one of them who hasnt got the cursor on them goes in for a slide tackle and ends up givin a penalty which i never went in for initially in the first place, jus wanna say WHY KONAMI?, WHY? But STILL THE BEST GAME EVER 99%/100% (because of the slide tackle issue)and why are so crap Arsenal in PES 2009 thats my team there

  122. dazza Says:

a plea to 99% of online gamers (especially ps3): man u, barca, inter and brazil are not the only teams in the game!! teams such as villa, spurs, atletico madrid villareal etc are actually quite good and the games are more enjoyable! &4 those who are left blue in the face by the sight of messi, ronaldo, mancini being seemingly invincible, last night i played a game west brom(me) against inter- i won 1-0! wat a great feeling!

  123. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

well said dazzathese people that play with those teams, have no confidence in their gameplay as they are almost a garunteed win for them.i put up a no big teams/clubs mesage before play online ,i will not play against them as its almost a form of cheating, with the most unrealistic players ever seen on a games console. You wouldn’t be suprised to know that Adriano is Seabass’s favourite player. So to riterate on your point NO BIG TEAMS OR CLUBS or no game will take place

  124. emmex Says:

i’d play with South Africa :D

“And to all FIFA fanboys – your game is so lame”

you need to wake up kid. fifa is so far ahead this year its untrue.

its so disappointing for me, but since PES6 the series has gone backwards, not forwards. PES6 still plays better than FIFA09, it was close to being the ultimate footy game both on and offline, so two years down the line seabass and co should be really excelling themselves, but they haven’t moved it on at all.

they need to step up their game and come back with a proper rebuild in 2010, but they are not going to do it, they aren’t bothered anymore. maybe its because they have run out of ideas? they don’t know how to improve things. shame if thats the case, but almost every pro evo fan i know has converted to fifa this year because pro evo has lost it.

its sad, but thats the way it is. konami have let us down.

  126. FOOTTIE SAD Says:

Dazza and Foottie Mad – you are my heroes.

  127. Bobby Says:

i would like to see a lobby introduced on each server, all versions. this new lobby would exclude the use of super teams (barca, inter, man u, ac milan, brail, argentina and whoever else may fall in this category.) i feel this is a thought shared by many players and though i do not know how easy this would be to implement, it would definately be worth it. i enjoy a great game with lesser teams but there is no contest when as dazza said 99% of players are so dedicated to the super teams. something konami should think about id say….. sadly i doubt it will happen.

  128. FOOTTIE SAD Says:

Its an online football game, not China. Let people choose whoever they want!!
Footie Mad wouldnt have had his “what a feeling moment” had it not been for someone picking Inter against his West Brom.

  129. A Hawk With A Dog's Tail Says:

ok it was a power cut…….I agree playing with and against barca inter and manu is just so dumb sometimes people just use ronaldo and messi etc

  130. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

well actuall thinking about this, its not the fault of the gamers, its the developers of the game that make these teams so unrealistic, that it is too great a temptation for the gamers with less talent to play with anything else.Im sorry if i have offended anyone but as asaid before there is no talent or skill involved by waltzing through defences from the kick off, which in all the years i have watched football,i have never seen, and believe me its alot of years,so bobby im afraid we are stuck with the mediocre players that will always pick them.I dont mind getting beat by someone who is on a level playing field

  131. FOOTTIE SAD Says:

Maybe thats what they enjoy? Nobody forces you to pick a lesser team, why not put your id up on here so like minded people can add you as a friend and you can play against each other “on a level playing field”

  132. tommy Says:

    online lag
gameplay better than PES 2008 but worst than PES 5,6
    Same old and bad graphics
    Same bad sound
    CL licence lnly the name…
    Full of bugs
    Crap AI

all these makes the game amazing?

  133. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

Ok guys ,ive just had the whole thinj explained to me as i had taken time out to speak to Konami uk.As far as they are aware, there is no lag issue, and i was the first to express this.I had explained to me what lag is and what causes it.Firstly lag is ,as we all know ,a delay between two machines in communication. Now that is not the fault of the servers,it is as to wht connection you have and to do with your contention line.Your contention line is the amount of people that share your line with you at any one time.It goes in bands of 1-5 ,1-20 , or 1-50 ,now obviously the more you share with, the weaker your connection becomes so to speak, therefore for example if your’e on a 1-50 line ,there will ,or can be up to 50 people on at any given time , so this is where lag comes in,depending jow many people are on the same line at any given time. Also it is worse on a ADSL Line as opposed to a Cable line ,as a cable line is more sturdy. How you find out how many people is in your contention line, you will find it in very small print on your broadband agreement,of course, when you take out the agreement, you are not told of this, and this is a drawback of broadband in England,so now you know, and that is the difference between online and offline. So everyone all go out and get a cable line if you want to enjoy lag free gaming. I am on an ADSL,so i have to suffer like probably most of you

  134. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

and dont have a go at me,I am merely relaying what I have been told , the only way it will become an official complaint is by doing the complaints form on this site, which will ,or should be handed over to KONAMI EUROPE,not KONAMI UK

  135. safesurfer Says:

Ive been playing the game for a week now and I have to say that the single player game is as good as, if not better than, the best PES games like 4,5 and 6 and a vast improvement on the botched aberation that was PES2008. My only criticism relates to the online mode. Although a slight improvement on last years (ie. not unplayable) the game still suffers from lag, teleporting, bad A.I. when defending (the defenders play like they’re pissed) and the inability to defend against the usual suspects (Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney et al) even if semiassisted control is on and six defenders are trying to tackle one of these players. Games, therefore, reward the players who have no technique and play with little or no intelligence but who simple give the ball to a Messi or Ronaldo and run with it which is totally at odds with the more cerebral single player game where goals have to be carefully constructed and thought out and winning is earned with intelligence and hard graft. I hope patches will be made avaiaible to solve these problems but I can’t help thinking that we’ve been here before and since PES4 nothing has changed.

  136. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

@135,READ THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ,THAT WILL TELL YOU WHY UR HAVING THESE PROBS

  137. Gary Says:

Footie Mad- You lying idiot. Thats not what konami said. I phoned them just now and they have said that yes there is a big lag issue and they are trying to work on a patch to sort it out.

Get your info right or get lost off this site……idiot.

  138. dm86 Says:

Overall I think it is pretty good to be honest. More ositive than negative I guess, but again, I aint been blown away. Shamefully they have got rid of all the decent german players and replaced them with fake ****ty names. What is the point?? I have always had issues with why konami replace things like this that did not need fixing?

I wish they have played particular attention to the players technique when striking a shot at goal etc, cos it looks **** and unrealistic at the moment. I have still got major issues with the keepers aswell. I find it increasingly difficult to get into the game when every shot I either have or face is fumbled by a top rate keeper. I would rather have a clown in goal than half of the **** Konami have whipped up. Its about time they hired staff to tackle this type of thing. I think the technique of the players whether it be tacklin, shooting or even down to the keepers diving needs to be addressed, cos at the moment it is very unrealistic. Which is rather disappointing.

  139. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

NO MATE YOU GET LOST,THAT IS WHAT I HAD BEN TOLD,IM RELAYING WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD,SO IN OTHER WORDS ,SOMEONE IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH,BUT DONT COME ON HERE ACCUSING ME OF NOT TELLENG YOU GUYS WHAT I WAS TOLD, I WOULDNT MAKE THAT UP BECAUSE I WOULDNT KNOW WHERE TO START

  140. Thomson Says:

PES is the worst football game ever, FIFA all day every day! they run like they’ve got cramps in their hamstrings!

  141. Gary Says:

  147. liverpool 4 life Says:

  152. Silverfox Says:

    Hello
I agree with all, the game is good in comparison to last years, but does seem to lack a little something! The legends mode is a welcome addition, quite addictive, I have made it as a striker in the premiership, playing for Sunderland, same colours as the scummers, so for a pompey fan very difficult to like, i need a transfer asap!
Online, very disappointing again, too many idiots playing as Barcelona, no matter who i play as, the last 5 minutes they always score, better stamina apparently! Then there are soooo many connections that keep disconnecting from being poor, why does every other online game play really well, this one always suffers, gutted, i have all pro evo, on all formats, this is good, but not quit good enough.

  153. Joe Kerr Says:

man u people need to stop taking the game so seriously and have fun with it.

i got PES 2009 for £5 pre owned and when ive had loads of drink with my mates we have ago on it and its fun( when pissed on Jack Daniels).

  174. Renan Says:

The best and incisive response for me is the n° 58 from Simon McDermott, and I agree 100%!

  175. RABBIT Says:

i agree with post 174.. no 58 is the best and probably only way that we could ever get ‘konami’ to listen and get things right for the majority. i feel this year isn’t at all bad but saying that it isn’t brilliant either, somewhere in between.. aka mediochrity.. we want more, and deserve more.
I’m gutted about online, really wanted that to work this time, every other game i play online never has a problem, oh well there’s always next year!!!!!

  176. Naboolio Says:

Joe Kerr or whatever your name is, please just shut up about heath ledger no one wants too hear it you sad little loser.

  177. alex Says:

    long throws are amazing
keeper stays in middle sometimes for penalties!
no ridiculously strong players, sometimes adriano even shoved off
movement off ball is nicer from AI, can get some lovely one-touch stuff

that and the obvious stuff makes this the best pes to date, and I love the layering for kit editing

  178. Pesfan !! Says:

can anyone tell me when the xbox 360 Of comes out???

  179. Lewis Says:

Ive played every PES title going but this feels like a totally different game, it seems you cant do the basics well on this version, crossing, shooting, defending and even simple X passes are going astray! I dont know if this will come with time but so far im ving to use manual passes and manual crosses to get it to play how i used to, something i rarely had to in PES 08.

    Anyone else having issues?

online is gash….im refusing to play rankings matches until something is changed…..PES 09 is actually making me think about fifa……

  180. A Hawk With A Dog's Tail Says:

They better do something about the defending online its so dumb..

people can you post reasonable comments about pes, not talking about the crappy teams you lot support( man utd/chelsea).

  183. Nedge Says:

I am so confused on how people are liking this game….

Firstly – Its not even got the Transfer Window up to date… Why wait tell after the window to release a game and not even update it…. Rediculous.

Secondly- Defenders are a joke, they dont do what real defenders would do, they just run about, missing the ball.

Thirdly – Passing is broken. you press to pass to a player and then they just randomly kick it towards no-one. this doesnt allways happen but seem to be a regular occurance.

Fourth – Be a Legend, not sure it its just me but is there a call for the ball button? Also i got picked by wigan and i play CM so they play me there.. but ive noticed that its playing my CF’s RB and things like tht its stupid.

Firth – Players off the ball is shocking u pick the ball up in midfield and try to find a player but they all just run off, and leave u with nothing.

No like most Pro evos they take getting use to but, i cant see how a patch is going to fix this..

Is it just me that is hugly disapointed with PES this year?

  184. Ryan Says:

I think pes 2009 is good but not amamizing. I see there is a lack of improvenmets in alot of departments begin with I think it is the the time for seabass to relaize that altough the 8-directional system was good we are very longing to the 360 directional. Also the passes are not so goog with 1 out of 4 going to the wrong player. However on the other side of the paper seabass realize that he have to go to the gameplay of pes 6 and this is a good step. To add to players are not too fast too furious and in fact the result thge game more flows and it is nearer to real life. I own the ps2 version.

    Score:7/10

  185. F.R.A.N.K. Says:

He strips things from the game and does no research on football or listen to fans who have all the ideas.

  188. Troy Says:

Whose played PES 09 and FIFA 09 extensively? Thoughts?

  189. Edot Says:

i have. Fifa looks more like an actual live ftball match but you have to play like a psychic, always pre-determining your moves because of the unresponsiveness of the buttons. i found it difficult to do lovely 1-touch passing, but pes on the other hand, although some say it has small problems is a absolute fun game. Lets jus say if you want to play a game all year round, then its got to be pro, Fifa didnt even last a week for me!

  190. Patrick Says:

Can somebody please answer my question? Please, please, please! In PES 09, Cup Mode, can you play with a team not chosen as YOUR team, but a team that’s going to be controlled by the CPU? Instead of playing against the CPU, controller 2 may be moved so your pal plays against your time instead of the friggin computer? Please answer my question! P L E A S E!!!

  191. Moe Sizlack Says:

Well said Edot,FIFA’s game play lacks variety which makes it boring very quickly and all the goals feel the same were as in pes all the goals feel different and something new seems to happen in every game.
Patrick, sorry mate but cup modes and league modes are always beeen one player only, ive had this gripe myself when trying to play the master league with a friend. I was told you could make the Konami cup more than one player but havent tried myself.

  192. steve Says:

Hey fottie mad. These guys are pulling your leg.
Why does Fifa 09 not lag as badly.

Not only have they forced this pile of ****e on us, they are treating us like morons. I am really dissapointed.

Its been a week for me now and the game has not gotten any better. As a matter of fact, I have decided today I’m not playing it any more. This means I sadly have to play fifa instead.

There is something very wrong with this scenario.

  193. steve Says:

Ps. I hate fifa. Konami has forced me into playing that trash. And sadly its way way better than Pro Evo this year.

  194. Troy Says:

    thank for your thoughts.

  195. RM Says:

    Good game,much better than last….

    But Online is another story.

I try and play pass, as soon as i loose it they run to line with either Rooney or Eto depending who they picked- cutback – score

    next game

I try and play pass, as soon as i loose it they run to line with either Rooney or Eto depending who they picked- cutback – score

    the game after that

I try and play pass, as soon as i loose it they run to line with either Rooney or Eto depending who they picked- cutback – score

Even with a in game strategy of switching to as man defense and 2 deep sitting midfielder when i don’t have the ball.

Im sorry but it’s usually a case of whoever does this most win’s, and whoever tries to play a varied game loses….

    Utter waste of time

  196. RM Says:

Oh yeah, and thats with backline set to C – C on tactics, and switching to 5 at the back*

and keepers have a open near post, and stand on the spot when confronted bug

  197. iain Says:

    Hi guys,

Maybe you people can be of help to me! I clearly remember being able to set a formation in pes06 and 08 so that the full back would overlap the wingers, and if the midfielder in the middle moved up with the ball a striker would be in front of him. Now even when I have the winger flying down the wing for a cross I never have strikers in the box for the header.
It’s as though all players are fixed to their positions! I cant have my wingers making runs on the outside. A few more things I have noticed also, the computer aid cant be switched off. This means auto switch on players when they have the ball and it’s never the nearest man to the ball but far behind it like the centre half. Plus the pc makes tackles for you, sliding tackles. I have had a number of players sent off due to this.
One more rant I have about this game is that when a strikers with the pace of torres for instance has the ball the defender can catch him no problem, I dont think so!! But when the defender has the ball he is faster than torres! In reality this is impossible. However playing against chelsea SWP was just as fast with the ball as without and this is not very consistent.
Enough of my rant, the game is good but a lot of gameplay seems to missing for better graphics. Where is the training?
If anyone can help with the settings for runners and wingers and getting strikers up in the box and overlaps that would be great!

PS: one final thing: how come when I point in the direction of a player to pass to, the ball goes to someone else!!!!

  198. iain Says:

Sorry, I forgot, just so everyone knows I have been playing solid for at least 4 weeks now, but in total playing time feels more like a year!!! I play almost 24/7.

  199. Quin Says:

I’ve been a PES fan since PES 4 (before that i use to play fifa) but i decided to buy FIFA 09 instead of PES when i bought a PS3 recently. I must say, Fifa looks great and all but i’ve been playing it for a week now and its getting seriously boring, its not fun at all. And when i play Stoke or a lower team (i’m playing as liverpool btw) it always seems to be a draw or 1-0 win, but when i play the likes of Chelsea or ManU i thump them 3-0….ridiculous! Anyway, eventhough people hated PES 2008 i loved the game, it had its faults but at least it was fun to play, never got bored of it, even if online was bit frustrating too. Since then ive only played demo of PES 2009 and even the demo is much more fun than playing the full version of Fifa 09. I’ll defenitely be buying the full version of PES soon as FIFA is way too boring.

  200. ykl Says:

i’m really not prefer licensed team, U know, we cant change the kits if they are licensed, after two or four seasons u played in master league, i’m sure u will get bored. i bought the complete option file from ebay ( 0.99 pound only)everthing updated included all correct teams name, transfer, all kits and add bundesliga team as well..that was great and fun……..from malaysia.

  201. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

@192,YES I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS ,AND INDEED,I DONT THINK THAT IS THE TRUTH,AS YOU RIGHTLY SAID,REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU SHARE YOUR LINE WITH ,THE OTHER GAMES PLAYED ONLINE ,DOESNT HAVE THIS PROBLEM,SO NOW THEY HAVE RESORTED TO LYING TO PAYING CUSTOMERS ALSO.THE GUY SAID IN THE KONAMI OFFICE ,IT PLAYS FINE ONLINE,WELL IT BLOODY WOULD WOULDN’T IT,KONAMI WOULD HAVE HAD EVERYTHING SORTED FROM WITHIN THEIR OFFICE,SO IF THEY CAN LIE ABOUT THE ONLINE SERVICE,IT IS EASY FOR THEM TOO LIE ABOUT OTHER THINGS ABOUT THE GAME,SO I HAVE A SUSPICION THAT THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS FOR ONLINE,UNLESS THEY REMOVE THE BEGINNER MODE AS DEFAULT,AND NATURALLY REPAIR THE PROBLEMS ONLINE,BUT GUYS ,JUST REMEMBER PES2008,THAT WAS NEVER FIXED,I FEAR THIS WILL BE THE SAME

  202. JazzY Says:

Can u put the option file pack available on this website on the xbox 360 directly? im wondering if u can put it on a usb thn plug it in the 360 thn access all the kits and badges? can u do tht? or do i have 2 edit thm all myself

  203. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

I think the option file on wenb is foer the PS3 only

  204. RJ Says:

Quin – Good on you mate, a true account of the game. I also enjoyed the PES 2008, really had good fun with loads of games. The PES 2009 is great, the game has so many positives, the online is not as bad as people make out, but yes it needs improving.

I would certainly go out and by a copy mate, Amazon are selling it for £27.99.

  205. Matty Says:

Wow….Can’t believe you guys edited so many kits for PES 2009 already. The kits and club emblems make PES so much better to play. Thank you and keep up the good work!

  206. peslover4life Says:

I am getting pes 2009 on friday just ordered it from game. From all the comments i have read i have to say without playing the game yet i have to say i think this will be a better game than pes 2006. COME ON KONAMI!!!!!!!!!!!!

  207. Andrew Crook Says:

I am playing the game (great game by the way, much better than Fifa as I also have this but will sell shortly) on a 37″ HDTV for the PS3 and am having trouble with the aspect ratio stretching the graphics so it looks like crap….can anyone advise a way round this?

If I play on a smaller HDTV it looks fine.

  208. AVFC1982 Says:

Awesome, just awesome. Expressive, subtle, deep, challenging. As someone here said recently, i’d rather play PES on the PS1 than FIFA on the latest console. Its good that FIFA is around for the kiddies, but the real footballers know who the purists game is.

  209. rePRESENT Says:

Yh replaying to post 208 (one obove!!)

Pes is better than fifa is like saying SD tv`s are better than HD ones. whats wrong with you mate

  210. iain Says:

    Hey guys,
I have posted above with anoyance at this pes09 game.
I have now played even more extensively and still find things like most comments above, passes going all over the place more than once in a while and also having a winger that sits behind the full back when u birst forward, even though you set them to sit way forward and push up. Also when a mid player has the ball and runs forward, you want the striker to run ahead and get onto the through ball but OH NO, he then sits back and waits. It also takes time for players to get into the box when the cross comes in, or you have to get right down to the by-line for your strikers to be there. Also, pro mode is easier than easy mode!!! Get that one. I like the game otherwise, it is fun and very playable. The ONE thing I HATE though, you score a goal and have controlled the entire game with short easy passes, but as soon as you score, they are somehow able to dribble round the whole defence and get one back in 10 seconds, maybe I suck. I somehow though REALLY ENJOY this game. Loads of fun aside from the downsides.

To all those who posted the jokes about scousers, love them.
I am a scouser and I can relate to what you say. If you can’t laugh at yourself you don’t deserve to laugh at anyone!

What do you call a scouser in a white shell suite?
    The Bride!

What do you call a manc in your front room?
    Breaking and entering!

What do you call a ****ny in a car?
    A thief!

What do you call a ****ny in a porsche?
    A f***in good thief!

These jokes work on everyone, just laugh and get on with it.
As for calling each others footy teams a load of crap and other names, get a life guys and try just appreciating the game and the fact that these players have made it and actually are good. You don’t win what LFC have won and get called ****, you don’t win what fergy won and get called ****, and even Chelsea threw money at it, you can see how good they are now they have a good manager. This don’t mean I like those teams, it just shows I respect good football.
