The Proof Is In the Pudding
With Pro Evolution Soccer ’09 having been out for purchase for just over a week, people are beginning to make their minds up about this year’s version of the game. One thing no-one’s really mentioned is the fact that the game’s difficulty levels seem to be harder; from what I’ve found – having played on ‘Top Player’ difficulty for the last four or five releases, that on PES ’09 ‘Regular’ or the level above, seem to be as hard as ‘Top Player’ was on PES ’08. This may be because I’m not yet completely used to the new version, but the computer certainly seems to be able to keep the ball and create – and indeed convert – goal scoring opportunities maybe more than they were able to on Pro Evo ‘08’s ‘Top Player’ difficulty setting. This is one thing people were calling for over the last year, and to those people who have been disappointed with the new version, I can see a lot of things that show Konami have done to shape PES ’09 to be how people were wanting during the transition between Pes ’08 and Pes ’09.
On another note, one VERY good point in the comments section for this week’s ‘Pes Off’ was post 37 by Arctic Monkey, who noted that the reason for the online defence being seemingly so easy to go through, is most definitely because the (unalterable) setting for the game difficulty is set to beginner! This is something that seems so obvious now. Thanks AM.
Handball!
Dan mentioned (the now defunct franchise) ‘This Is Football’ in his IWP this week. It was a game I really enjoyed playing against my friends with, and brought back old memories when I read about it. One of my favourite parts on ‘TIF’ was the fact that handballs were free-kick offences. Seeing as the makers of ‘This Is Football’ had the means to implement this four years ago, why do Konami or EA not have the handball foul in their football franchises? Even the ability to turn off handballs would leave both people who were for, and those who were against the option, happy! I don’t really understand how you can now dive, edit your player’s eyebrows and choose the football to play with, yet the simple handball has been overlooked. Which leads me to;
The Big Question
So – Simply enough, do you think that the handball foul should be implemented into these next-gen football games?
If anyone knows how to put polls up via Wordpress (the software we use to publish these blogs) then please email me with how, on the email address listed below!
As always you can email me at francis_newall@hotmail.co.uk and comments on your preferences to what I talk about, whether you liked it, or just general comments on the article, are all very welcome.
Thanks,
-Francis

No.
The handball was included in Pro Ev 5 I think it was (correct me if i’m wrong),
it was bloody annoying though, how are you supposed to make your player avoid handballing it if the ball is simply punted at you? Also there was no way of intentionally handballing it, i.e. to stop a certain goal. I’m glad they got rid of that feature, it was pointless
NO
hate to point this out but handballs have been in the last few pro evo games! its rarely gives you the foul, but when it does you will see all the players tapping their arms! has any1 else ever had this?
pes owns this year i just got the OF released by WENB

Cant say ive ever come across it Chris. Dont think it is a worthwhile addition to the francise t be honest. It would be a random/ pot luck type of annoying thing. And reduce the game to more of a stop/start affair.
I’ve seen it in pro 2008 too chris, haven’t seen it in 09 yet but i’m sure its in there too. You don’t come across it to often
hi lads
just wondering and can somebody answer, when the ps3 patch comes out from konami can u download it straight from my ps3?
thanks
The reason why online defense is utter crap aint cos the difficulty is set to beginner. Its cos whoever is on the ball is the ‘host’ and whoever is not on the ball has to endure the lag which makes it very hard to time challenges.
Offline, the game rocks!
Online….play FIFA instead.
I haven’t seen handball in Pro Evo before but I think their are too many grey areas for it to be introduced.
As Mossatov said above, how can you avoid it if someone punts the ball at you from close range.
I reckon introducing at as an option is best suited.
Overall though, Pro evo has exceeded my expectations. Prior to its release with all the talk of how good Fifa supposedly was, I think Pro Evo has come back stronger and with constant improvement it could get even better. I’m looking forward to seeing how good the patch is though!
Post 8, kingston, im pretty sure the update will happen automatically, when you have the disc in and try to load it up. Thats providing your connected online. It will probably say ‘an update is required to play this game. Download new version 1.1 now?’ or something.
Its a slow week in Pesgaming.com when the issue of handballs is thrown into the mix.
my disc doesnt seem to add the music(thank god!) but still, what the f man?
plus, how do you add your own music on the PC version?
Handball has already been used in Pro before. It was crap and shouldn’t be used again.
End of discussion. Don’t mean to offend but pointless blog really!
Ultimate, post 12, good point there. Scraping the bottom of the barrel, thats for sure.
@mossatov – yea you’re right (i think) i think handballs were in pro 5 but it wasn’t reliable and I can hardly remember getting a penalty for a handball? it always gave free kicks but no penalties…I don’t think the game needs it to be introduced, how many times have you had a pin ball moment in the box where the ball flies off god knows how many players arms/hands? it would slow the game down too much; I concede that it is a massively important rule in the real game but to see it implemented into Pro would need SO much testing for it to become reliable, I can’t see it happening again any time soon.
and a response to ‘MatTheCat’, correct me if I’m wrong…but are you saying that whenever possession changes sides during a match…so does the host of the match?? If you are…then you’re wrong. The host stays the same throughout the whole match, and I believe I’m right in assuming it is the ‘home’ team player that is the host??
and am I the only one who doesn’t understand why some people are still criticising the online version?? There are a few tiny moments of lag during the game but nothing which is that noticeable. If you have a good connection (check if you do on the new Konami site) I don’t see how you can have any problems?? People with bad connections will obviously have bad experiences and it is their own fault for buying a newt-gen console, trying to play online then moaning when it doesn’t play well because they don’t provide a better connection for it to be based online on!
Ok, heres another pointless query:
Why did they take out the option to swap shorts on both home and away kits, a few years ago?
Think it was good to be able to have a couple more kit options. I.e., all white England kit, etc. It was only in one version i think.
Yet another pointless query:
Why did they not use proper chants during matches????
fifa is really rubbish.
ref: post 16 toomerj
online is poor! people are not complaining about it for no reason. i have played pro 6 online with no problem what so ever. pro 8 was shambles online, pro 9 is slightly better.
why cant they do the same thing as they did with pro 6 on xbox live. not everyone lives in a perfect world with a great connection like you, when i go on the konami site, i got all A`s for the connection test, yet i still suffer terrible lag and i`m sure i`m not alone on this.
perfect world? no need for comments like that…well I can’t say I have had any problems with my connection at all and all my games online have been fine. However, it’s obvious there must be problems with some systems so Konami have got some work to do (sound familiar??)
anyway, shouldn’t you be in a good mood liverpool4lyfe, you got a great result today! ;)…oh and we just beat the hammers 2-0, I’m eve happier then i was before!
I know Rodney, i loved that option, because sometimes teams would change their shorts because of a clash. I don’t understand why they took that option out.
Pes3 was the first and only title in the Pes series to have hand balls, the feature didn’t work very well however and due to popular demand Konami got rid of it.
I’m not finding this years Pes difficult at all, if anything it is really easy, and I play on top player and have done ever since Pes1. In my first game against Liverpool I scored with a Rooney diving header in the first 3 mins.
I have played 3 games in master league as Hull City, I beat Aston Villa 3-0, Liverpool 2-0 and drew with Middlesbrough 0-0 in the cup, which was surprisingly the hardest match of the three.
I completed the Champions league on the day I bought the game and that was a little harder, also playing the international cup is slightly harder, but matches are normally goal fests, the cheating A.I is still there as well.
Online is appalling, I live in Devon so connection speeds aren’t great in this part of England, though I have no problem with Fifa or Unreal Tournament, which both run superbly, with no slow down at all. The only slow down I noticed in Fifa was when I played someone from Asia, even then though it was minimal.
I’m not sure what my Pes connection is, as it fluctuates from red, yellow and green frequently, though most of the time it is red, but then again so is everyone else that I play.
I have not seen online play this bad since ten years ago when I had 500mhz pentium3 with a 56k modem.
I didn’t realise Konami were going to be equipping online players with Hiro Nakamura teleportation powers, or Syler’s telekinesis ability’s, perhaps Konami could get together with the producers of Hero’s and plan an online football addition called Hero’s super star soccer, as there half way there already.
Ok so my connections not the best, but my other games run perfectly online, while Pes is a big bag of ****e.
I was playing against one guy, his defender had the ball running out of defence. Suddenly his defender disappeared and the ball magically landed at the feet of my striker Wayne Rooney, for me to pop into the back of the net.
When I played become a legend mode, the ball disappeared altogether for about a minute, before it reappeared again, and then the game was cancelled due to worsening conditions.
Honestly in this day and age how can Konami produce something that works so badly. If you go back and play Pes6 on the PS2 online, it has none of these problems and plays very well, with no slow down.
So on the subject of handballs, I think Konami have much bigger problems to address before they start worrying about handballs, also why have they included diving again, it’s a bad idea and I can’t honestly say when I’m stringing together a flowing attacking move that I ever think, I know instead of smacking the ball in the back of the net, I think I’ll dive on the floor here like a cheating git, what a waist of time.
Also has anybody else had problems transferring data from your PC to Usb memory stick and then to your PS3. I bought a Kingston 2gb memory stick to transfer the pes 2009 option file over to my PS3. I created a file called PS3savedata, transferred the optionfile into that, then placed it in my memory stick and when i placed it in my PS3 it said there is no data on it. I tried it again with my MP3’s and the same thing, no data! Does anyone know why this is happening?
I’ve heard that some memory sticks don’t work with the PS3, if this is the case could anyone recommend a usb memory sick that definitely works with the ps3.
Simon – I downloaded the option file from WENB. There is no problems with any memory sticks, all should work without problems. I think your problem might be the fact that your seaching the usb folder in video, rather than game. Go into the game icon, scroll down to usb / saved data, and walla its there including all the files.
hope that helps mate.
Guys had an interesting conversation with a mate of mine who has gone onto playing fifa instead of PES. Purely for the online mode. He told me today, that the fifa online is a shambles, absolute crap, he said the players just jum around from one end of the pitch to another. I had an interesting conversation with him regarding the offline and he said that fifa’s is great. I personally think the PES offline mode is far better than fifa’s.
What do you guys think??

@ Simon McDermott
I have a Kingston 8GB memory stick so you should be fine with yours.
Also as per your request for help installing the option file on your PS3, I had the same problem initially.
The reason was because I also had other saved folders on my memory stick. Remove any other folders you have on yours, leaving just the OF folder. Then try the process again via the game data utility folder on PS3. It should work fine.
Thanks Rj, but I’ve been trying to access the memory stick, through the game section in the memory card utility. I selected the usb device and it still said no data present.
It’s the same with my MP3’s on the music section on the menu, I access the usb device and still get no data present, I dont understand why it’s not working.
Aza the memory stick is brand new so there are no other files on it. Is it possible to format the memory stick?
I will try another option file, perhaps the one at WENB, maybe there is a problem with the download I have.
Thanks anyway guys.
racist bastard!hate people like you!will the new updates sort out problems with online play like the defenders for example?why are there never any online competitions either?
Goes without saying, but post 29 was NOT the Simon McDermott that has commented earlier on in this forum.
Who cares about handballs, I want solid base gameplay first, the core elements of the game must be satisfied first, gameplay, audio, then visuals, and then silly little things like handballs, nets etc.
I want some more solid PES articles on this site like I’m used to seeing, not debates on whether handballs should be implemented.
how do you add your own music on the PC version?
Handballs should not be given any sort of priority. I can only imagine how annoyed you would be if you conceded a last minute penalty for essentially doing nothing wrong.
I remember I used to get goals chopped off when going for a header, supposedly being handball. Total waste of time. I also feel the same way about the dive. I never use it, only as a comedy feature if I’m through on goal and winning comfortably.
Lol wow, Somebody used MY name above aswell! I’m almost honoured to be honest!
This is the REAL ‘Ultimate’; don’t be fooled. Theres only one racist on this forum, who somehow keeps being able to post. The IP banning isn’t working, Pesgaming! Sort it out!
Geezer is a mug
guys Seabass plans to release a downloadable content package on the 7th of November. There is a sneak peak video ot the content of this package which has been posted on PESFAN website. i have the link to the vid make sure you select the HD option at the bottom.
all i can say is its not a great deal of additions but at least Athletico Madrid will be licenced but unfortunatly as you will see in teh video Valencia are not which is a shame but enjoy non the less.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YqLE25RaKg
Cheers Dougie for the link
i get the impression Seabass is happy with the game he has put ou and plans to mak more of the same judging by that video. At least forlan looks amazing in the real Athletico kit shame about valencia tho.
i dont see why you want handball introduced into the game :S ive been playing since ISS days on PS1 and I’ve got on rather well without it lol
but i do think handball was in a pro series on ps2 as Mossatov mentioned and yea it was retarded in my opinion.
i mean if you’re on the back foot in game, and the opponent takes a random shot an it hits your defenders arm then u concede a penalty…..kind of cheap i think. i dont think handball should be introduced at all because i think free kicks an penalties will be given away when u slide in for the ball (sometimes it hits the defenders hand accidently) or again random shots where u block it with your body but maybe it will hit your arm.
with the lag online aswell, i think there will be some ABYSMAL decidions given online in reguards to hand balls.
however i do understand that Pro fans crave realism in game, thats what seperates us from another football game thats made by an electronically artistic company :| LOL i just dont see how it would work tbh :P
id like to ask you guys about the patch thats going to be released. does anyone have any information about a release date for it?
With Konami’s update coming out in November, is this update include kits and up-to-date transfers?
Troy, a number of the Spanish teams, I think 4 of them will be licensed with the update in November, and the transfers will be updated.
yeah watch comment 36
Dougie has a vid with Seabass explaing what the Download content will have
Of course hand ball should be in. No matter how bad it worked in pes3, the question is how good they can implement it.. They can go to fifa website and check the rules according to it..
Another annoying thing is, that you cannot attach the keeper at overcrowded situations in the box. Invisible circle..
But who cares, what we want…
omg will u please get lost u idiotic immature racist prick. its been like this for months now. what ****ing video are you talking about u fool. first we had triple k then fukin joker and now sill ass ryan do one you prick
Probably the same person to be fair, chrisze
He’ll be banned within the 24 hours. Maybe one day he’ll look back and realise what a fool he’s making of himself. Does he think ‘LOL these guys will think this is funny’ before posting, I wonder.
He’s a funny guy, he thinks people aren’t familiar with the posts of others, how articulate they are, whether they are outwardly racist or not etc. So I don’t know if he assumes that by purporting to be me or Simon McDermott, or anyone else for that matter, he’s actually fooling anyone into beleiving these are their real opinions?
Foolishness.
Onto the subject of the actual game, and little niggles in the Be a Legend mode are really annoying me. The fact that the opponent seems to only score when I’m in the defensive wall[that I have no control over being in or not] is starting to REALLY annoy me!
OH MY GOD, ultimate ur a racist prick, go and say ur racist crap to someone who gives a damn
It’s not the Ultimate that usually posts on here, you should know by now chrisze.
i dont care man this is bull****. how would u like it
i wud like to say that post 46 and 48 are not me
yeah why not, if you can turn it on and off…
imagine the appeals that would be going up across the country!!! :-)
Its interesting that the handball issue is raised because a couple of weeks back playing the demo, there was a blatant handball on the line from a corner I was defending. I paused the game and watched the replay over and over again laughing because in real football it would have been a sending off. The handball was when I tried to head the ball from the line. So I would have been punished for something I didn’t do intentionally. On the other hand its like that in football. A foul is a foul, and a sending off is a sending off regardless whether they were intentional or not. So I would say YES, add handballs and remove the diving.
My personal summation of PES2009. Offline – its great. I am having a lot of fun in ML and BAL. I was really surprised at how good your team mates’ AI is in BAL. They do pass to you when in a good position. Been great fun. I couldn’t careless about the bad music and lack of licenses. Its a solid game offline.
Online however plain and simply its crap. From the user agreement reminders and the lag issue its really bad online. I have been playing other games online with no lag or little of it like Soul Calibur 4 and Bad Company. Its such a poor effort from Konami that I wonder why they even bothered with the online mode.
Handballs were in pes 3 as mentioned before and as i remember,it was a real free kick fest so they ditched it. I agree with rodney about bringing back the option to use different shorts and socks, its only ever been in pes 5 and i loved it but seabass took it out.He seems prone to these strange decisions, remember the snow and wind speed and direction? Also the freezing breath on winter night matches has gone.
Yep I had a handball called against Torres yesterday.
I took a corner and Torres seemed to scissor kick an amazing goal.
To my dismay the ref blew a foul!
I had no idea where a foul took place and thought perhaps one of my guys had taken a defender out.
Replays showed nothing, until I noticed the ‘goal’ had actually been scored by Torres’ swinging arm- it had missed his foot entirely.
So my answer to the big question is : they already have handballs, just wish they had a slow mo or indicator of it so I don’t waste 10 minutes of my life wondering why the game engine decided i hadn’t scored a ‘legit’ goal.
I scored a goal the other day on pes that was at least ten yards off side. Have linesman making mistakes been put in purposly or is it a bug?
The handball is in the new pes. I recently got a free kick because the striker in the opposing team had handled it. I did not realise this initially but upon viewing the replay i seen it clearly stuck the players hand. Please try playing a bit more pro evo before coming to wrong conclusions about the game!
post 22,you use the terminology,”taken out by popular demand”,so are you suggesting that there is someone out there taking in these ,and other comments concerning the game.Well if that is the case, then surely someonre is acknowledging the online issues. So by “popular demand”,the game will be fixed, although ive been told it is all down to our connections,as said by a Konami Representitive.Dont hold your breath guys, this is as good as it gets, and we have another year of poor quality. And as for the idiot Ryan, that keeps popping up on here, there are other discussions for you to get involved with on that level if you so choose, however it is not here ,and if that is your mindset, then it is not welcome here,so please go and find something constructive to do ,as you are repetative and boring
Im not so sure about handballs being introduced but i would like to see referee’s playing advantages after bad fouls but then going back to the offending player to card him once the advantage has been played out, this is a very important part of the game & needs to be brought back.
57. They had that in 6 I think it was. did get a bit annoying though
58. yeh i thought it was 6 aswell, coulda been in 5 too, I understand it could be annoying but it is the proper way it should be in my opinion.
been playing the master league and to notice that its still the same thing as last year! so now i stop playing it and now i jus play normal league my first season i came second in the league now i started the second year and notice they have put the offical champions league in which is good has anybody notice that!!
super-pes that was me with above comment!!
There is handball, but the commentators just call it a foul.
Don’t you ever cross into the box and you don’t connect with the ball and next thing its a foul? I wanted to why this was and its because the ball hits the striker’s arm if he misheaders it. The commentators just don’t pick up on it and just say ‘charged illegally’.
Why in the edit mode you cant change the nationalites of players in team A, Team B, etc i want to make my own teams but its pointless if you cant make the players there own nationality anyone any comments on this.
been playing the master league and to notice that its still the same thing as last year! so now i stop playing it and now i jus play normal league my first season i came second in the league now i started the second year and notice they have put the offical champions league in which is good has anybody notice that!!
Hi all,
I would like to inform you about a new website which is purely built to express disappointment with new PES 2009 game (especially online play etc.)
This website aims to bring PES fans around the world together and pressure Konami to fix the problems with the game, make online play more stable and increase the quality of the game like previous PES games (before 2008) that we used to love and play.
http://www.iwantmypesback.com
Please share this website with your PES lover. The more, the merrier!
Thanks
Balcik
been playing the master league and to notice that its still the same thing as last year! so now i stop playing it and now i jus play normal league my first season i came second in the league now i started the second year and notice they have put the offical champions league so thats mean that they have intergraded the chapions league with the normal league if anybody gets that!! anybody notice that!!
Are you saying that if you finish in the top four of say the English league, yuo can qualify for the Champions League? If so, that kind of makes the Master league a bit redundant. I have never bothered playing the individual leagues before, can you transfer players etc?
yeah u can qualify for the chapions league trust me!! but the only thing is u cant do transfer or get relagated like what the master league does thtas the only bad thing but other and that i rather play that and go into the proper champions league than play the fake one in the master league!!
Cheers. Makes you wonder why they didn’t just include in the master league.
has anyone done a connection test on here ,and what were your results, would be interested to know, mine came up B A A,Which tells my connection is good enough to play online, try yors and putbit up on here the site is http://www.konami.jp/we/network/2009/ Once on thereclick on the network speed inspection tools” icon and follow the on screen instructions
@toomerj: actually MatTheCat is absolutely right! In PES 6, synchronization conflicts were resolved in favor one of the players. That player, at least in 1v1 games, changed with the half-time.
In PES 2008 they changed this and all conflicts were resolved in favor of the player with the ball. When with the ball you never experience lag. At most you experience slight synchronization pauses but your game state doesn’t change.
I’m not sure about PES 2009’s synchronization scheme but It doesn’t feel like PES 2008, it actually feels worse. That said, I’ve only played one game online.. it seemed much much worse than the offline which is great!
my 2 cents
to no.17
i loved it when we were able to swap short and socks as i agree it gave more options. i hate it when both teams have both the same colour shorts and socks!!!! it doesnt happen in the premiership!!!
how is everyone coping with the be a legend. whats the best position???
i have actually a replay save where i got a penalty from a handball, it is obvious it is included, since 2 or 3 versions, PES2009 rocks for now, my only disappointment is after playing the be a legend mode, which is great, but u will notice that the com is more powerful than the com playing your team, i mean the players become stupid and hopeless! i played in real and in liverpool, and almost any team can play them like kids,,, that is not fair,, but i conceder it like a challenge for me to beat the unfair balance there :)
to summer up, the game is great, but needs tweaks, its a big jump for PES, keep the hard work konami…
There is a handball foul in PES 2009, it just happened to me, and the opponent`s player were showing it to the judge, by tapping their arms. Hm, but sometimes when there`s a clear handball foul, nothing happens :(
Quote from http://www.zootoday.com:
Seabass also talked about hyper-realistic but reportedly shelved features like diving and handball. “Actually, handball and diving are both in PES 2009 but they’re a lot more refined in this version – which means handball happens less frequently. For diving you must be sneakier!”
every1 i know has moved on to fifa from pes. the new pro evo is poor and is not much different from the previous version. im dissappointed!
Just wanna comment on something lads. Been looking back in my archival football catalogue of PES games. The golden age of PES was definelty winning eleven 5 to winning eleven 9. I have been playing those games and comparing it to 2009. It’s as if a demon from Japan had ripped the soul from within the PES franchise. We all remember the grudge film. I think Seabass was in it.lol. Anyhow, playing the oldies, you really develop a sense of not wanting to play PES 2009. Fine its one more franshise with 2009 at the end of it. It really should be PES 12. They should look back at where they started and see how far they have strayed off the football path. Also wanna send my kind regards to mrgametight for creating an awesome patch with all the epl kits. Thanks mrgametight, best OF I have seen so far, awesome work m8. They just don;t make them like the use to. Progress in this case doesn’t equal evolution. United should wath out for Rory Delap’s thrown in’s today. Com’on United!
