IWP – Game Reviews

After many weeks of playing, remaining as unbiased as possible and trying to get all my opinions down in a format that makes some kind of logical sense, I have finished writing the reviews for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and Fifa 2009.

I own a PS3, and whilst have had games on the 360 versions of both titles, I am writing these based upon my experiences on the Playstation 3 editions. I would also like to point out that the PC version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 uses the same game engine as the Next Generation consoles, whereas Fifa 2009 on the PC uses the game engine of the Playstation 2. Hopefully this will help PC gamers make an informed choice about each title, and what their system can play, specifications wise.

My final little point is that although I have, and will continue to critisize reviewers who seemingly get swept up in the hype of certain titles and provide fake scores, I have a certain level of new found respect for their ability to keep deadlines and get all their points into short articles. I have not given either game a score, as they will only be compared to each other, and that would kind of make my comparison article pointless!

The files are in winzip, and require Adobe Acrobat to read them. Each is around 6 pages long, so I recommend printing them off!

    Sorry, I had to.

  2. Raphael Says:

    the link isn’t working…

  3. Filip Says:

I can not open the reviews.
It must be vista or something.
Is there any other way to see the reviews?

  4. Steven Says:

Pro Evo review is pretty much spot on. Would have like you to mention the lack/removal of great features from Pro past such as RANDOM MATCH SELECTION.

Also, MANUAL as an option for controller instead of the unreliable AUTOMATIC or SEMI-AUTO – both terrible.

And 1 last thing – BECOME A LEGEND, team-mates NEVER play a long pass/diagonal in the air, it’s so frustrating a makes the game predictable and de-motivating. Awful.

  5. lamboz Says:

i know this is off topic but anyone know what happened the wenb site?

  6. Filip Says:

wenb site got attacked by some hackers.

I want to use this mode of free speech to thank the muff for his Von Option File for PlayStation 3. Such a good job, and it only takes 5 minutes. So thank you. Keep up the good work.

  7. Uball Says:

love your review mate. very well thought and unbias. I would dare to even say that it’s the best review of both games hands down.
i like the fact that you didn’t compare both games but more on their individual pros and cons. i’m generally a PC user, and i don’t play much games this days, unless it’s futbol, PES 2009 definitely kick ass on PC while FIFA left a lot to be desired. Fifa on PC felt like it was almost mocking me for buying it. What i don’t understand is why this football game developers sometimes give crappy half-ass games for PC when PC, in it’s simplicity in comparison to consoles, are always given the choice to be upgraded. in a few months time(if not done already), the PC will surpass all that consoles can give graphically and performance wise so why can’t FIFA or PES give us loyal PC users something to drool about. i’m not really complaining for PES, since it’s not bad at all on the PC, but FIFA, what the f? i always see myself as unbias and playing FIFA on PC, i cant give myself the satisfaction that i choose the right football game (normally PES), but perhaps that’s just it, PES is pretty damn good as far as sports games go for the PC and FIFA, i wonder do you really listen to all your consumers? but on the hand, does Konami listen too?

  8. smoo Says:

  15. Crazie Says:

    HELP!!!
Please can someone tell me how you get the 1.20 update patch onto my xbox 360.. PLEASE give me a complete tutorial

  16. RJ Says:

Dan, great reviews, really agreed with most of your points. However i cannot understand how you can say fifa is lag free online. This is not the case always, in fact there is a severe slow down in most games. Yes its better than PES online mode (not hard to achieve) but to say the online in fifa is perfect is totally false. In fact, it would be good to know how many online games you played to make this judgement!!!

I have got both games, only to see what was the fuss about fifa. I really enjoy a few games online (not perfect games mind you) but offline that game is really boring, especially playing against the computer. I can play maybe 2 then i get board with it. I am going to trade the game in at game.

Game have a trade in value mag that comes our to give prices that they will give for trade. They will give fifa £18 and PES £20. I think they realise more people are trading in FIFA.

Thanks again for the reviews mate.

  17. Nev Says:

I have Pes09 (for xbox 360) and want to trade it in. I have read endless reviews stating ” Fifa 09 shades it” or Fifa is far superior” etc. Therefore now I want to see what the fuss is all about and get fifa 09.

P.s. thanks for telling trade in vales at GAME

  18. christos Says:

D PLEASE INFORM THE REPRESENTATIVE OF KONAMI THAT SEABASS AND HIS TEAM HAVE TO FIX THE ONLINE PROBLEMS WITH THE PATCH OR UPDATE TILL CHRISTMAS.MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE PLAYING THE ONLINE MODE AND SOON FIFA WILL TAKE THE LEADERSHIP….
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  19. Rizaldo!!! Says:

    HELP!

The von option file is great. I have downloaded the 1.04 version. anyone know if the 3rd kits in the champions league are in it? mines dont seem to be on it but it says that they shud be on it!

  20. Anonnymous Says:

Pro Evo 2009 is a poor game compared to fifa. fifa worked so hard into making an improvement and they did it successfully! konami are just lazy and made little effort into making pes 2009 good!

  21. christos Says:

My friend anonymous above you are wrong.Only the on line mode of Pes2009 sucks, the rest of the game is centuries in front of fifa

  22. Si Says:

Christos I’d love to know what aspects of the game you think pes09 is centuries in front of fifa??!!

  23. Filip Says:

Does anybody know how to quit a game online or look at the connection lights (green, red and yellow) before you start a match?
I always have green, but I also always get a red opponent and it is unplayable.
    Anybody?

  28. Jay Says:

Si – How can you even question whether PES is miles ahead of fifa, of course it is. Your obviously a fifafanboy, who likes arcade, very easy games, hence why you love fifa.

  29. PESLOVER FIFA CRAP Says:

  34. what do you call??/ Says:

what do you call a french man wearing flip, flops????

    Filip flop (aka post 1)

  35. Filip Says:

    LOL
    But I’m not French

Anyway, I have discovered a cheat in PES 2009, so I just wanted to let you know.
It is during penalties, when the opposing team is taking them, press pause (start) just after he kicks it. You will be able to see the direction that the ball is going in. Then just send your keeper in that direction. It works perfectly!
Try it and tell me what you think.

  36. Simon McDermott Says:

Dan-Just read your reviews of Fifa 09 and Pes 2009, I liked and agree with your Fifa review, but disagree with your final verdict about Pes 2009 and have to commend you for finding as many positives as you did, with such an average game.
How you can call Pes 2009 “the best football experience ever” is beyond me.
Presentation wise Pes 2009 is poor, with wall paper back drops and boring menu systems. There are less gaming modes than it’s PS2 counterpart, with the main difference being that the PS2 version has World Tour mode, instead of the champions league. This begs the question “why couldn’t the Ps3 version have had World Tour mode as well as champions league?”
Another point missed is why the hell aren’t Old Trafford and Anfield in the game, while they are in the PS2 version. This shows that when Konami can’t be bothered to include something, they just blame licensing instead.
You said that Pes 2009 looks and feels more like Pes6, though does it play as well as it’s PS2 counterpart, the answer is “NO!” The only area that has been even slightly improved from the PS2 version, is that lobbed passes and lobbed through balls, now travel less distance and are more lofted, allowing for more delicate passing and little dinks over the top of defenders, but overall the rest of the game does not play, flow, or feel, anywhere near as good as the PS2 games engine does.
Graphics are average, player models are good, but from a distance its hardly next gen, sound effects are very poor, with players shouting what sounds like “fire in the hole,” and the crowd chanting what sounds like “you are gay” or “USA”, in fact the version of Pes that had the best sounding crowds was either Pes 1 or 2. The ‘adding your own crowd’ function was supposed to compensate for this, though I hardly call having 1 chant on loop recompense. There should have been slots for game chant scenarios, example- winning or loosing chant slots ect. This is laziness on Konami’s part again, why should we have to wait another year, just for them to add something that they should have got right from the word go.
The goal keepers are far worse than there PS2 equivalents and fumble far more than real life keepers do.
The Sound effects of the ball being kicked, hitting the keepers gloves, hitting other players are appalling, and are more akin to a box being hit with a stick and a stick hitting a paper bag, while the ball rebounds of players like they are made of solid blocks of wood.
I’m going to end my complaints here as I have already voiced what I see as the problems with next gen Pes copious amounts of time before.
I respect what you guys at Pesgaming are doing and hope that DD’s meeting with Konami recently will pay dividends for the future of Pes, but they have to be told the truth and the fact is that the PS3 and 360 games engines are flawed, dated and are in need of replacement not tweaking, this is the message Konami needs to hear otherwise were just going to get more of the same.

  37. god Says:

PES 2009 is a masterpiece and u are a dickhead.

  38. bart Says:

    I like both games.Do i have a problem? No.
I just want PES to get better so i edit it, i patch it with all the wonderful work from modders out there(i use the pc version) and thank god it always gives me this magic that i need when i play my game.PES has the MOJO.Fifa 09 feels cold BUT it’s very good and i can’t imagine myself not having it.So i guess i don’t have problems this year.As for reviews and stuff i would give FIFA a 9 for overall performance and PES a 9 for the enjoyment despite the reoccuring issues every year.Just think if next year KONAMI really try hard. But i think we will see a new engine with the next playstation 4. HAHAHAHA…It’s a japan thing…

  39. Nikali Says:

Thanks for the reviews. Been waiting for them. Look forward to your comparisons.

You really hit the nail on the head with the comments about Fifa’s gameplay. I play PRO, and when playing Fifa at friends house its been great although hard to get used to from PRO (at first). But theres always been something bugging me, something which PRO has always had and Fifa just never has got near. Its the input lag, and how it feels a little unresponsive. PRO feels more like your in the game, with instant decision making leading to the great or the poor in terms of your team play.

I reckon if Fifa fixed this one thing they could be up there as the best game, when taking in consideration the amounts of features and online play.

But I’m staying with PRO, it really is a better game this year, although theres no denying that theres a LOT of work to be done, especially outside of the gameplay in terms of features and online.

I would really urge you to send both reviews to both companies. It will only lead to an improvement in both games, and therefore all the better for us, the consumer.
    Thanks again

  40. AlexJT22 Says:

i tottally agree with you simon mcdermott that pes 2009 is an average game (hit it on a nail). pes 6 on ps2 was the best this engine has produced like you i loved how the game flowed and how it felt you were connected with it i honestly couldnt put that game down i actually think pes 2008 was a better flowing game and felt like you had more control over your players than pes 2009. the only thing that has improved is passing in 2009 the rest has got worse the dribbiling is to rigid and 90% turns are a joke we want 360 movement next yr i cant believe dan you thought dribbiling is better in 09 its just 2 easy to beat players online and offline the computer is just as easy as you just have to do turn k on yourself then quickly change direction this aint realistic, also the way the computer has players charging in on you everywhere the ball goes is unrealistic, defending is a joke online and not as good as the last 3 – 4 pes games online, changing cursor is just a pain in the neck, refs and keepers are nearly as bad as past yrs, the realistic physics have actually hampered the games flow big time i could go on with faults about the game online and offline and im not sayin fifa is any better but i think you tried extra hard in finding faults in the gameplay and other areas on fifa while you didnt on pes the only thing you were truthfull with pes was online. you said there was no atmosphere in the build up to a game with fifa i actually think there are minor differences between both games so im not sure what your talking about you also put addidas live season as DLC when you get it free with the game well 1 league witch is good enough for me so you should be reviewing that as part of the game. i was annoyed you put fifa down for there inovation such as goal celebrations at least there trying to add something new to the footballing genre i actually think this is a better idea than just a cut scene with players just hugging each other fifa have tried hard so your constantly having something to do and so what that wes brown can do a front flip remember this is a game. i play 2 games now and put it down same with fifa there is just no addiction like of old pes games and if they keep turning this s**t out pes is gonna lose alot of customers i hope they do bring out a new engine as i think we all need a new challenge this is why i probably think fifa shades it this yr as its a tottaly new game for me as i have not played a fifa game since 98 as well as having a good online modes which i think most gamers use 90% of the time now i meanive been playing call of duty 5 by the looks of things 6 out of 10 ppl havnt even played the single player mode they just gone straight online which is where pes needs most work . they need to bring some inovation to the game maybe even get rid of sea bass as i think he either thinks he knows best which he doesnt or he lives in cloud cuckoo land or hes run out of ideas or all thre of theses i mean how many yrs have we been asking for barriers to be removed and various other things but yr in yr out he just doesnt fix enough and adds other faults and this yr it especially this case i honestly think i could do a better job directing the developers. i also qestion this site in how much they are pes fans one of you have never played pes 2008 and it seems you dont play alot of pes 2009 either but its a great site on getting news for pes games so i will c you lot next yr and hopefully next yr we will have a great pes game with a new engine but i wouldnt put a penny on it would any of you?

  41. sandaweches Says:

Dan thanks for taking the time and effort to produce unbiased reviews of both games.

I was reading all the reviews everywhere about PES09 since august. from what I read it seemed the end of the world, and that PES is no longer the footy game. I have finally received the game last week and been playing it alot. I must say shame on the reviewers that bashed the game. This time I think the hype was in fifa’s direction which is fine. It has made many improvements. I have played the demo but didn’t like the gameplay.

PES gameplay is the best reflection of what football should be out on any console. Receiving passes, running into open spaces and shooting is simply amazing. I have been playing the PES/winning eleven iterations forever and this version on PS3 is by far the best. Play it on Top Level and you will appreciate the AI improvements.

With the exception of online play and licenses, I think the game recreates the football experience brilliantly.

If you want to know how amazing the gameplay of PES is, just go to the team licensing and option file page of this forum and you’ll see the amount of time and effort people spend on editing all to enjoy the football game.

When my 11 year old cousin was happy and excited playing Fifa09, I knew that I should better ignore the reviews and save my money for PES and damn it I was right!

  42. tagsbo Says:

simonmcdermitt you seem more interested in presentation rather than the actual game, are you a lady?

  43. Simon McDermott Says:

@40 Alexjt22 glad you agree and well said mate. There’s alot of us who are unhappy with next gen pes and the only way anything is going to be done about it, is if we speak up and let Konami/Seabass know that it’s not good enough and that long term fans like us, will dump the franchise if it carries on down this path.

I also played Call Of Duty5 over the weekend and the online is bloody amazing, I played it around a mates and it is so good I couldn’t put it down.
When you play games like Call Of Duty5, Little Big Plannet, Far Cry2, Fallout3, Grid ect, you realise what the PS3 is capable of and it leaves Pes looking even more ridiculous than it already does.
With next gen, console gaming has reached a level normally only experienced by PC gamers, with games that are abundant in innovative ideas and show a new level of depth. This means developers of games that were predominately Console games, are launched into a competitive arena, with developers who are brilliant in every area of gaming and produce innovative, inspiring, high quality products that are as fun to play online as they are off it.
Konami have jumped out of their paddling pool and into the sea and now find themselves seriously out of depth, with alot of work to do and a current games engine that is out of date before it even got started. The best thing that Seabass and his team could do is take a year out, work their ass’s off like their lives depended on it and produce a new games engine. If they utilise the myriad of ideas from there fans, as well as there own and other games they could utilize these ideas to build a brilliant games engine, with extra stats, which would add greater depth, with 360% player movement ect, more gaming modes including the return of popular gaming modes that have since been removed, and new ones added, with an online tournament and league editor, for posting your own and others custom built competitions and the ability to add your own custom players or third party developer players, with players from the past ect, or even the ability if someone wished to add whole leagues, such as English Championship, serieB ect as DLC, which you could either play online or integrate into Master league, allowing you to build numerous divisions within master league, to give the game a reflection of real life leagues. With editing systems like this available, it gets around licensing laws and allows third party developers to get in on the act and produce gaming modes and leagues for the game they love.
There’s just so much you can do with the current equipment available, it sickens me to see the people in the position to make a difference, doing nothing and innovating new ideas at the speed of a dead tortoise.

  44. Simon McDermott Says:

@42 tagsbo- I have gone into the need for a new games engine at some depth before and didn’t want to repeat myself.
The most important thing to me is the gameplay, everything else is secondary. This is why I think Konami should take a year out, spend a whole year on just the new engine and worry about the other stuff once they get it sorted.
It will pay dividends in the long run, even though they would miss out on the massive profits they would make from releasing a game next year, long term it would give them a games engine that is so good Fifa would have to do the same thing, leaving them miles of the pace and doomed to fail.

  45. scottio Says:

Simon Mcdermott has nailed it on the head IMO.
I want to love Pes 2009 so much but theres just too much what could have beens!
I keep on feeling this should have been Pes 2008, and feel Konami have just done the bare minimum to keep us interested untill they make a true next gen version.
Look at EA ..we all sit here and slag them off but lets be honest for a minute..they have listend to there fans and made a huge effort in making the game more realistic.
Konami have lived off the reputation for too long now , yes the gameplay is better than anything so far…but it was just as good 4 years ago…where is the improvement? Most of us have Xbox 360’s or PS3’s and we cant get a lag free online match?
Sorry guys its just not on, If your telling me a group of developers cant make a better game than a few years ago on a Computer console far more superior then to me its just down to lazieness and lack of commitment on there part.
I love PES…but love fades…and mine and a few others on here is fading fast.
Konami have one last chance with me, i hope on their part they realise alot of us are not happy with the progress…or lack of the series is making on the next gen consoles
    Thanks for reading

  46. Masi Says:

Konami have jumped out of their paddling pool and into the sea and now find themselves seriously out of depth,

Yesssss!! Spot on Simon McDemont. That’s why I am prepared to give Konami time to get to grips with this gen.

I have sold my PES2009 as I wasn’t happy with it overall, but I know I will get the next PES.

PES2009 would have been a stunning game if it was released 3 years ago. But the fact is, FIFA09 and other games for that matter (like you mentioned Simon) have so much content and been vast improvements from their predecessors that PES2009 looks like a weak game in terms of content in today’s standards.

And most importantly Konami, need to realise the importance of online gaming nowadays. It basically gives more value to a game.

PES2009 isn’t a bad game at all, but compared to other more solid offerings on the market, PES2009 looks like a lazily made product.

  47. Nick Says:

Why is editing said to be excellent, maybe for editing faces but for doing kits it doesnt seem to be as good as older ps2 versions. Im sure there were more kit variations on ps2 pes 6. For example I haven’t been able to replicate Arsenals kit, Maybe its just me but I cant do it. Not a huge problem but its simple things like this that annoy me.

  48. Fascin Says:

Great reviews! Nowadays I own a PC and I play PES since it was called International Superstar Soccer with Aleijo and Gomez as brazilian’s fowards and Redonda playing for Argentina. I also try FIFA sice FIFA 96, when you could run away from the refree to (try to) avoid a yellow/red card but, for me and my friends, PES was allways the favourite, this is the reason we PLAY one and only TRY the other one… After trying FIFA 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002 I just gave up! Today, after reading this review, I decided to give another shot to FIFA, and I downloaded the FIFA 2009 DEMO. . . Guess what? FIFA remains the same load of crap! How anyone can possibly think that FIFA is in the same level of PES??? And don’t get me wrong, I’m just comparing the graphics, gameplay and sound, by the way, the only thing I found better on this FIFA was the sound… Latter I erased anything about FIFA from my PC and went for a match of PES just to regain my senses back. GO EAT MY SHORTS FIFA FANBOYS!

  49. scottio Says:

Fascin Just because some people have opinions dosen’t make them fifa fan boys, grow up and try to process that alot of people like different things.
Once you have that then you can imput some points.

  50. Masi Says:

I hated FIFA with all my guts. The last FIFA I played was 2005. Up until now I realised there is no point in being in denial. FIFA 08 and 09 are vast improvements from earlier FIFA titles.

Not everyone is a fanboy. Fact as a big PES fan I always told my mates I would touch FIFA ever again. But this year I had to swallow my pride and admit FIFA 09 is a more complete package, and I really want to play online with good footy players without lag issues. And FIFA is the only game you can do that.

  51. Uball Says:

simon i agree with you but i think it’s time i give you the true blue fact about the asian mentality( yes i’m asian and what i’m about to say is generally what Asian corporations are). let’s start by confirming that konami is an asian company, now that we have that fact, let’s look at the asian mentality. In the western countries like UK, USA, creativity and innovation is in the trial and error category, where a project dev team brainstorm, explore the creativeness of the team members. Asians are the “do by the book or else” mentality like “you, be creative NOW!”. I’m boss and you’re not. I’m right and you’re wrong. NO, dont use your mind, use the manual asshole. no room for improvement.

Anyone here really think Konami is going to 100% listen to the fans?
didn’t they say they are listening after the PES disaster of a game came out? hell, we still got some problems in the new one( tho i admit i’m still playing it) like the stupid auto tackle in the penalty box. what the hell?
Konami i was hoping you would win, humble the corporate giants down with a great game but i come to realize that you are a huge corporation as well. PLUS, your damn game is more expensive than EA..what the hell?

Konami, how can one be so stupid and still breath?
    Hope you listen.
    A unrealistic Asian

  52. Uball Says:

hey sorry. my co-worker took over my com while he was reading this. I somewhat agree.

  53. Fascin Says:

scottio, I don’t bother writing about PES on FIFA web sites, and I access PESgaming.com to share and gather PES information with other people interested about PES. Somehow, a lot of FIFA FANBOYS come here just to say how great they think FIFA is, and this just peace me off! Can’t this people read? This is PESgaming.com, not FIFAgaming.com for crying out loud! I don’t care how much you like FIFA, and if it is so good, why don’t you go brag about it somewhere else? And, just one more thing, if you like different things then PES, why don’t you go write about it on different sites, instead of PESgaming.com? If you have that kind of time, then you better grow up.

  54. :-) Says:

im asian, dont talk rubbish lol.

  55. Justin Says:

I still don’t understand how there are people here that prefer FIFA 09 over PES 2009.

PES 2009 on Regular is harder than FIFA 09 on Legendary, FACT! I am undefeated on FIFA 09 on Legendary in my Manager Mode, whilst I have already lost twice on Regular in my Master League on Regular, and I haven’t played as many games as my FIFA 09 game!

FIFA 09 is far too easy to score, FACT! I play 10 minute games with my friends and they always end in goal fests. Through balls to strikers work far too easily and because strikers for the most part are faster than defenders it leaves you with no chance to do anything but watch your friend slot it past your keeper effortlessly. It gets boring very quickly.

PES 2009 has got the perfect mixture of slow build up passing play and being able to actually beat the odd player with pace and skill, without it being too easy like PES 2008.

The shooting is very hard, and not always consistent, but I would take PES 2009 over FIFA 09 any day of the week.

For 2010 PES needs to work on the shooting a bit, make penalties have a power gauge and then it would just about be the perfect game gameplay wise. Then a minor graphics adjustment and an animation overhaul and it would have FIFA beat in every offline department. PES will never beat FIFA online though I am sad to say.

    Justin – Well said chap

  57. Gary Says:

sandaweches – Very well said mate.

Simon Mcdefifafanboy – YOur response is crap mate. Everything that Dan said is quite accurate about PES. The game is amazing offline, the best football experience to date. You consistantly slate the game and always talk about the ps2 version. Why would you not talk about the ps3 version. The game really is amazing.

Thank god you did not go and meet konami, otherwise we would get a game which is just like fifa (but thats what you want), saying that would they listen to a fifafanboy, i suggest NOOOOOOOOO

    Re: 55,

Justin….i’m totally agreed with you……i have tried fifa09 (rent from local retailer)..pes09 definitely beat fifa09 in terms of offline……the pes gameplay are much more realism than fifa09..Although i’m really satisfy with pes09….but hopefully konami can make a huge improvement for pes2010..especially online , player move direction, penalties and mater league………..thanks…..

Wall paper backdrops and boring menus?! who gives a f*ck!?
Christ McDermott you do come out with some drivel.

I’ve never known someone to go on a site which is solely abiout PES and slate it so much… anyway this isnt a personal rant just picked out a comment from above so dont start cryin to me…..and also f*ck the PS2, who wants to go backwards?! Games are all about graphics, gameplay and addictiveness. Some of the player faces this year are immense!!! Ronaldo + Drogba look like photos! Evra is spot on, as is Tevez, Messi, Ronaldinho etc etc etc…Licenses help but theres many option files out there so problem solved. Online isnt good at all but who cares, we never used to have online back in the day so its not like we’ve lost something. Offline the game is amazing. Every time when I go to play PES, its a case of “what mode do I play now?” cos there is so much choice. Fifa gets soooo boring and its just not realistic. How many overhead kicks from corners do you see in real life?! Fifa plays as if everything you try in football comes off…. which just isnt how football works! Hence why real life stats show most strikers have about 40% shots on target. thats why I LOVE PES and I reckon I always will. UNPREDICTABILITY!

  60. Justin Says:

Thanks for agreeing with me guys. It’s good to know that there are people like me out there, not like some of my mates who are official license whores and don’t give a crap about gameplay.

I also wanted to point out that it is way too easy to buy players on Manager Mode in FIFA.

I do my Manager Mode with Man Utd, and the first thing I did was sell Ronaldo to buy more players. I was able to buy Pirlo, Sergio Ramos, Jesus Navas and Fabregas for the money I got for Ronaldo (I sold him for 2 million above market value to Man City, it’s the best I could get).

I couldn’t believe how easily Arsenal were willing to let go of Fabregas. In real life they would never let him go, especially to Man Utd.

Something else to add to the Cons list of FIFA 09.

  61. flecko07 Says:

  66. Simon McDermott Says:

Guys I’m just trying to point out the truth, I know it hurts but Pes does not play as well as it used too, fact!
The gameplay has lost it’s feel and does not play as well as the older versions; if it did many of my mates and I would not have reverted back to the PS2 version. We are all about the gameplay and the feel of the game, not graphics and I can not see how being a Pes purist makes me a Fifa fan boy.
This vote seems to have most of us split down the middle, with equal amounts agreeing and disagreeing on the need for a complete over haul of the games engine.
I know it may seem like whining by those of us who are unhappy with the gameplay, the is fact that Pes has changed very little in the past 6 years; this is leading to boredom by long term fans of the franchise, who are seeing the game take good things out, rather than put them in and de-evolving rather than evolving.
I can understand why some of you are getting peeved, because it sounds like moaning or slagging off on our parts. The truth is however that if the changes most of us have talked about recently were implemented, if all this criticism is taken constructively, because this is how its meant, then we all win, because we will get an amazing game, with a proper next gen games engine, that would blow Fifa out of the water. Lets see how many of you go crazy at us a slag us moaners off then.
We are not Fifa fan boys, because if I was I wouldn’t bother. I would be busy on Fifa fan sites telling EA how they could make the game the best football game on the planet and I know they would listen, if I came up with good constructive ideas.
I was like you guys once, slagging off anyone who had anything negative to say about Pes and you would be right, if we weren’t adding constructive comments on how to we think it could be put right.
The reason I comment on here is because its good to talk about new ideas that we would love to see Konami implement into Pes. There is always the off chance that someone from Konami will be checking the fan sites and if any good ideas or areas of the game that fans aren’t happy with are mentioned, then they may think “hey that’s a great idea” or “Ok fans aren’t happy with this area of the game, it needs changing” and report it back to Seabass and the team.
If they look on fan sights however and see everyone saying “ooh I’d love to see more accurate goal nets at each stadium” or “I want a better variety of boots in the game,” then at the end of the day Konami reps look on here and think every thing is hunky dory, no major changes needed and all because no one had the balls to stand up and say “everything is not great, the game is rapidly declining, moving in the wrong direction and something needs to be done about it.” If I was a Fifa fan boy I would be off playing Fifa, or on Fifa fan sites, which I’m not or ever have been. I have played Fifa yes, because only the ignorant condemn without investigation, and its stupid to believe that EA will never put something in their game that Pes would benefit from.
I just want Pes to put out a proper next gen game that plays and flows better than the old ones, then I’ll be gone! Until that day I’m going to keep on whining like a little bitch.

  67. roy Says:

    totally agree with Simon McDermott

  68. sandaweches Says:

    @Simon McDermott

let’s get this straight buddy. YOU don’t like the gameplay of PES09. The gameplay did NOT lose it’s feel. YOU are having a hard time adapting to the new gameplay. So that’s YOUR problem.
A majority of people on this list and elsewhere (friends who’ve played the game for ages) LOVE the new gameplay and new features (BAL & ML).

That’s why there are options in life and if you don’t like PES gameplay then you can play FIFA and I really do hope you enjoy it. I tried and I tried to understand FIFA’s gameplay (I had along time to do that till the PES release) but just didn’t feel like I’m playing football.

Please don’t give us this load of rubbish about it’s gameplay.

oh also about change….I agree that games have to move forward but PES SHOULD NOT become like FIFA. PES is improving. They have already introduced so many improvements over earlier versions in both gameplay and play modes.

Online needs fixing, more licenses should be added and refinement on the player movements. Other than that the game is brilliant.

Ever since I got the game last week, I have been playing BAL and it’s consuming my time. I haven’t even started playing ML or go head to head with my friends. so don’t even say the game get’s boring.

  69. Bongobeat Says:

I don’t necessary disagree with a few of your points McDermott o’leary but you don’t write anything new. Why don’t you play the game a bit more instead of plagiarising yourself over and over, you’re boring the boobies right aff me!!

  70. mn9ajas Says:

Good reviews of both games Dan, although I think you should’ve considered the FREE download content for Fifa 09 in your review. True it costs more to download other leagues but you do get one for free for the year.

Agree with your comment about it being hard to beat people one-on-one in Fifa but there are ways around that by using the skill moves.

Pro review was positive and like others have mentioned perhaps slightly more positive than it should’ve been. Having said that though thats understandable given your experiences of both games.

I noticed someone had mentioned that legendary mode on Fifa was easy. I’d like them to show their profile figures from the game, stating how many they had won and lost as I don’t think that is the case.

I was most surprised though when you mentioned the weird AI runs off teh ball in Fifa but failed to mention how poor Pro’s off the ball runs are. The players still huddle together far to often like little 11yr olds on a school pitch!

  71. ex pes hubby Says:

i’m suprised at the amount of people are pleased with pes 2009 and thinks it’s a great game. are you all mad the game is a pathetic attempt. the gameplay is poor and players act like retards and feel like sunday league pub footballers. the worse pes since pes 2. i don’t know if people have played the pes series as much as me or they just easily satisfied but i’m am not. the game is going backwards with lilltle adjusments rather than actual improvements each year.

  72. ex pes hubby Says:

what a bunch of doughnuts you lot are, real pes players know the game is trash of an improvement. i expected a progreesion from 2008 not regression, ok more options, poor presentation and gameplay. ain’t know one i know claimed pes2009 is good except the doughnuts on this website. i get answers like ‘it’s alright’ or ‘it’s ok’ or ‘it ain’t all that’ whenever i ask people about it. in my opininon i played it since it came out now, and the game isn’t as addictive as previous version. it doesn’t even feel like your in control of players anymore.

mr McDermott might to much but at least he talks sense unlike other ignorant posters, who couldn’t recognise **** if it was smeared on their face.

  73. Simon McDermott Says:

    @68 sandaweches
The game has lost its feel, it does not flow and is more rigid than a corpse. If you play the old games you will see that they are far more dynamic and flexible.
I have highlighted the areas in which the older games are superior many times before so am not going to divulge into it again.
If you are happy with the game then fair enough. It is not however ‘only my problem’ there are a lot of people who think new Pes is a bad game and we have as much right to air that view as any of the rest of you.
I played the game for three weeks before trading it in for Pes 2009 PS2, which immediately felt better, with better shooting, better goal keepers, great rhythmic passing allowing you to string together a myriad of passing moves,a plethora of ways to score, no zig zag one man demolition of the whole defence,a feeling of when you scored, you earned it, better positional play and runs by players, much harder AI, the Ps3 game is so easy its pathetic, better player movement, more stadiums, more correct team line ups, good defending, no slip slidey bamby on ice players, great passing angles, better sound effects, more realistic physics engine, no wooden players or stupid grunts by the players and the list goes on and on.
So I cant even blame it on the me not having got to grips with the game, because The AI was very easy to beat and I was scoring from all over the place. Yes you can score some good goals and have some good games, but its better on the PS2, because of the games engine.

  74. Simon McDermott Says:

ex Pes hubby your right mate, the only place I hear anyone praising next gen pes is on this site. Everyone of my mates and people I meet who have been playing the Pes series forever all agree its taken a nose dive.

  75. Simon McDermott Says:

mn9ajas Also agree Legendary mode on Fifa is hard, alot more difficult than some of the games you get online.

  76. Dave O Says:

Justin – I agree, and I think you have maybe touched on something a lot of others have been afraid to comment on. Is it possible that what separates the Fifa fans from the PES fans is the level of difficulty? I too found Fifa too easy (but also didn’t like the floatiness of the controls, and the delay that Dan talks about). It was good, but ultimately what keeps me addicted to PES 09 is the challenge, and when I think back to the PS1 days, it was the challenge of the early Winning Eleven games that got me hooked in the first place. If I was to pass something on to EA it would be that they need to work to make the game harder. Konami, on the other hand, could learn from Fifa and make an intermediate difficulty level which is more balanced. I find in PES, almost every year, that there is a huge difference between too easy and very challenging in the jump from one difficulty level to the next. I think Fifa has a more balance indermediate difficulty level, but unfortunately it’s called “Legendary.”

I totally agree with post 59!The unpredictable nature of Pes is the reason why I prefer it over Fifa!Even though EVERY

  78. Mr. Mark Says:

Being from the US i grew up on Fifa and was introduced to PES (winning eleven at the time) i laughed especially after playing it the first few times thinking that it was a joke because the controls were so ridiculous.

As i started to play it more and more i realized they were just a lot more realistic and i wasn’t used to realistic. Now i look at Fifa and laugh because i realize it’s a robot. there is one glaring reason that keeps me away from buying fifa and that is (just like madden, NCAA, Live, etc.) there are glitches and set plays that work 90% of the time. (case in point through balls). In EVERY fifa game there is some way you know you can score, often leaving out people will to be creative.

PES has creativity and unpredictibality. 9/10 times my player should miss a volley from outside the box, but the one time makes it all the greater. No break away is for sure. And if you’ve seen Tottenham’s goalie this season you know there are bad goalies in real life. Just like when i play against Cech in the game i rarely score on a rebound.

My only issue with PES, is they take features out instead of adding them on. With the PS3 and blu-ray technology there is no long a single reason to take any feature out that has proven to be good.

With that said, true creative game-players would never go to a robotic game like Fifa.

  79. Mr. Mark Says:

P.S. I knew that I wouldn’t enjoy fifa when i enjoyed playing the loading screen more than the games.

  80. Jip Says:

I totally agree with post 59!The unpredictable nature of Pes is the reason why I prefer it over Fifa!Even though EVERY Pes game has had scripted elements that a player had no control over this latest edition has reduced these to a minimum!Occasionally a keeper makes a duff save, a tackle is harshly punished or the opposition scores a pish goal against the run of play (the ‘jip’)……….but this adds to the realism of the game!Anyone who watches football regularly will see its not about tricks or running as fast as you can towards the net to score (a problem with pes 2008). If you want to trade in your pes 2009 or, like McDermott, go back to an older version of pes then I think your missing out on a game with a lot of depth (BAL is massively addictive). Fair enough the online is cack……..but the game is best enjoyed with a few mates 2v2!!!And not with the so called ’super teams’!The stats for the lesser used teams offer a more competitive and enjoyable game in my opinion.

But everyone can make their own mind up!I personally enjoy the game and the fun of ‘ev’ nights! There are so many other good games on the ps3 that I can tolerate the fact that pes2009 isnt perfect! If it was perfect I dont think I would enjoy it as much!I couldnt shout “smell your jip!” anymore!! :)

p.s. you need some Always Ultra, Simon

  93. Simon McDermott Says:

@82,84,86 & 87 willmo, timber, Scottio and Alex JT22 cheers guys it good to know I’m not the only one.
Alex jt22 Pes 2009 PS2 doesn’t have an online mode, which I was gutted about. I think this maybe because last year Pes 2008 PS2 online was apparently very bad, so they appear to have dumped it altogether.
As a game though it plays better than Pes6, the only down side is that the skill moves are the same as the PS3 version, so 360 spins ect are on the D-pad which doesn’t work as well and leads to players some times pulling off spins that you didn’t instruct them too.
Gameplay is very good, it’s a bit of a shock dropping back down to PS2 graphics again, which don’t look that good, especially if you play it on a HD TV, though your eyes soon adjust after a few games. The pace has been slowed down so its not as fast as Pes6. The goal keepers are good, pulling off some amazing saves at times, the shooting and passing are spot on, there’s a real flow to it all . The ball rebounds realistically of players everything feels alot more softer, smoother, with great after touch on the ball when passing, shooting and especially at corners. They have also got rid of the naff scoring angles that plagued Pes 2008 Ps2 cutting out the diagonal dead cert goal.
As for modes there is no champions league, but it’s no great loss as all champions league is, is normal European championship mode in master league, with some slap chucked on it. Instead of Champions league mode you have world tour mode, that is making a return from Pes 2008, you also have club mix and National mix mode, where you choose four country’s or clubs and the players are mixed together.
As far as playing against your mates is concerned there is the option to add your friends profiles into the game as in Pes 2008 PS2, for head to head record keeping, recording your VS match stats.
Master league is the same as the PS3 version, also there is no option to allocate players to go up for corners in the formation menu screen, however your CB’s go up naturally, so there is no need.
Become a legend is there, though its not that great, you can only play in vertical mode, and instead of a flag there is an off side line across the pitch.
There are 27 stadiums including Anfield & Old Trafford, snow weather condition’s are there as well as a multitude of patterned pitches. Players start in the tunnel in the intro screen to the match and weather conditions are also displayed on the intro screen, plus when cold you can see the breath coming out off the players mouths.
The AI is also very good. When starting master league as Man U, I won the first two games quite convincingly, but then the AI cottons on to your tactics and man marks your players, though this can be got around by assigning different formations to your strategy buttons and switching between them to create space for your players.
Player transfers are more up to date than the PS3 version with Berbatov at UTD, though the DLC will have made the PS3 version more accurate now.
Overall its a good game, best Pes yet! its just a shame it came on the wrong system.

  94. Gago Says:

I have the legal copy of game (bought it when first game out) but I use crack to prevent me from messing up/scratching cd. Anywayz, ’snake’, if u want a crakc for version 1.20 patch its

then copy over the original exe file. This will updateyour file version to 1.20 and NOT 1.00. Use it and it will work.

  95. andrew Says:

Reviews are opinions, but I have to pull you up on some conclusions you end up with after describing the features.

    Best edit mode ever?
    Why?
    Because you can upload images?

Well yes, but it still suffers from the old ‘options taken out’ syndrome and you can only paste images limited to a limited area on the front of the shirt.

I prefer the edit mode from PES6 where there were more templates, I could have a logo on the shorts, and I could edit the boots.

    Sound is great?
    Why?
    Because you can upload MP3?

Chants are repetitive and there is only one sound when the ball’s hit. Uploading MP3s doesn’t make other sound issues go away.

    GFX are great?

Granted you explain why you think this, but I have to question why you don’t mention poor running animations (unlike you, I can’t see how there are that many unique running animations, if they are unique, they are terrible) and the horrible look of the large shorts. These are superficial graphical elements that need to be mentioned in the context of the look of the game.

Otherwise I enjoyed the PES review and appreciate it.

The FIFA review made me at first want to buy it but as soon as you mentioned the inability to beat the defense with pace, regardless of who the player was, turned me off. I remember playing the FIFA demo and was frustrated when I’d patiently waited and created space for a fast striker to make a break, only for him to seem to tire conveniently for a lummox of a defender to catch up. The variance in attacking options is why I prefer PES.
