My Definitive Pes ’09 + and – Write Up!

Firstly, apologies for the delay in blogging for the last couple of weeks. I’ve decided to make this a bi-weekly blog (one released every fortnight) so as to publish blogs I can be proud of and enjoy writing, rather than trying to meet a deadline so to speak. I do listen to your comments and I hope there shall be no more blogs from me which you deem to be ‘scraping the bottom of the barrel!’

I’m very much of a first impressions kind of guy; this is the reason why I hate every new version of Pro Evolution that comes out. “Whoa! Stop right there!” I hear you say. But don’t fret, I realised a few nights ago why I love the game Pro Evolution Soccer and every edition which comes out – a month or so after I’ve had it in my possession! It’s because every new edition is quite different to the edition I’ve had in my grubby little mitts for the previous twelve months, so I can’t quite get the feel for it until maybe a month or so of playing it.

Last night I cracked it – a kind of epiphany if you will. I set the default camera on the new version to ‘Wide’ and then played two matches, as England vs Germany on the ‘Top Player’ skill setting. I won 6-1 and 7-0, and realised that the reason for this was because I had finally got used to not just the general gameplay and controls of Pes ’09, but because I had the feel for it! I find that those who have been playing Pro Evo for a few years will be able to tell for themselves whether the shot their striker has just released is going to hit the bottom corner of the net, or whether the goal-bound free-kick they have attempted to curve into the top right hand corner is going to either go in, or hit the post/bar. This, I believe, is what I’m going to call having ‘the feel’ of the game. When I know I’ve hit a cracking shot, it’s not really the animation of the player hitting the shot, but how long I’ve held the shot button and what I’ve done with the analogue stick (or directional pad) – you know that moment when your thumb does exactly what you wanted to happen. Anyway, in case people think I should be sent down to an asylum, I’ll stop right there.

So, down to the nitty-gritty; I’m not going to organise the plus and negative points into any sort of order, but simply list them in bold then talk about them slightly just underneath. Please note these are just my opinions, and it’ll be interesting to see who agrees and disagrees with which!

+ Game Speed

Despite having got used to and enjoyed the game speed of PES ’08, I like the speed of this year’s edition even more. It’s far more realistic, and I think that in this point I should also include my praise for the speed and realism of long balls across and up the pitch, as well as mentioning that the speed of passes, long balls and through balls are all very realistic too.

- Goalkeepers

So, this year goalkeepers again seem to be an issue for me. Both with their seeming inability to catch the ball maybe three or four out of five times, and with the terrible way they run towards an opposition’s ‘over the top through ball,’ the goalkeeper positioning and play is definitely shading towards poor, and is an issue which needs a bit of an overhaul. Of course, Goalkeepers aren’t infallible, and of course if they make mistakes then it can lead to a large turning point in a match, but at the Premiership/Championship/Country level of football, goalkeepers are – most of the time – very solid players. This isn’t very well represented in Pes ’09, in my opinion.

+ Slide Tackles

Slide tackles seem to be a lot more ‘crunching’ than in any of the previous versions, and I prefer it. Konami seem to have got it spot on with whether a slide tackle is a foul or not, and – this is evident if you watch replays of ‘dodgy tackles’ – you can see for yourself whether the tackler’s foot touched the ball before either of the tackler’s feet/knees/shins touched the player he was attempting to dispossess.

- Bringing Back Play

As mentioned in DougieDonut’s list to Konami, the referees simply do not bring back play if a foul is made after the player has passed the ball to a team-mate. This is one of the things that Fifa excelled on this year – whether to let play go on and bring it back if a suitable time arose – or to let play go on and then book the player after play has stopped. This is a simple rule in football, and one which PES ’09 seems simply to have overlooked.

+ Headers

I like what Konami have done this year with the headers. You have to accurately time your jump and there is a realistic representation of what happens between the two competing players (if in this scenario, two midfielders are competing for a goal kick landing in the centre of the pitch), or from the attacking player if he’s heading towards goal. Taking the midfielder’s scenario: I find that if you’re the player in front – trying to head the ball from your own goalkeeper’s goal kick – back to a defender or another midfielder, you have to push into the other player, and time your jump so as to make a good connection with the ball. If you’re the defender trying to clear the ball, (so the other player in this scenario) then you need to attempt to push the other player towards his own goal so as the ball goes over both of you, or you manage to head it to one of your own players – that is, if you timed your jump correctly! Obviously trying to word a scenario like that is hard, so forgive me if it’s a little hard to understand.

- Linesmen

I’ve given the linesman a bad rep for this year. For example, I just scored a goal from a through-ball which was clearly offside, the lines on the pitch helping when I looked back at the replay and my player’s foot was about two boot lengths offside! This year’s edition of PES seems one of the least accurate on the linesman/offside front. Maybe they’re going with realism over third eye technology…!

+Body Positioning

I like how body positioning has the ability to affect how powerful your shots are, and how accurate your passes can be. This is something I feel Konami have always excelled at, and they’ve bought it into the ‘next gen’ editions with style. For example, if you hit a shot with Gerrard or another generically powerful player whilst they’re slightly hunched over the ball as in real-life, he can strike a really powerful, accurate shot. This also goes for if you’re passing the ball around in midfield, and you try and pass to another player with your weaker foot, or whilst you’re still turning, then the odds are that your pass will be intercepted.

- Players Standing Still

…After taking a free-kick or a corner, the player who took the set piece simply stands still! Another one which was flagged in DD’s list. This means that the player cannot react for a rebound or tackle which needs to be made.

- Online

Obviously, the big one. I just went online now to try and do a quick match against someone (‘il polipo’ if you’re out there…) and firstly, couldn’t connect to the servers. Then I was matched up, and although not as bad as when Pes ’09 was first released, there is still a large amount of lag, with players teleporting, terrible defence, and unplayable gameplay.

I then played Pes 6 with the same connection, and played a match which was 98% lag free. What I noticed, is that when it happens to occasionally lag on Pes 6, it only really happens when a goalkeeper is about to take a goal kick, kind of like the game steadying itself. Coupled with the fact that if it lags, it lags the same amount, and just slows down for both players until the game manages to catch its breath, means it’s head and shoulders over the online experiences for either Pes ’08 or ’09.

What I can’t understand, is how Konami managed to get it so right for Pes 6, and then so wrong for Pes ’08 and ’09. I understand that the latter two were designed to be ‘next gen’, but they’ve had two years, and a huge amount of disappointed feedback. I have a feeling next year is going to be crunch time.

+ Pitch Shadows/Goal Nets

A simple and quite self-explanatory one here – not something that particularly interests me, but a lot of people are very interested in the small details like these, and untucked shirts. The way shadows are shown and respond exactly to what’s happening on the pitch is quite a nice detail, as is the way that goal nets bulge in certain places (not an innuendo…) , and then other times the ball bounds right off as if it’s hit a support bar.

-Dribbling with Speed

One thing that’s quite personal with reference to preference (like that one…) is how fast the players can twist and turn whilst in possession with the ball. I personally don’t like the way that players seem to be able to turn and dribble in three of the 8 directions you’re allowed to go in, within two seconds. Konami seem to have gone for realism for Pes ’09, and the speed at which the players can perform turns and twists are slightly too quick for my liking, and undoes the game’s good work with attention to the speed and realism of actual football.

+Introduction of the RT/R2 control

Pretty self-explanatory, but I do like that if you hold the RT/R2 (360/PS3) button whilst attempting to control a ball – normally used if trying to control a long ball – then the player seems to have a lot tighter and closer control of the ball,

That’s your lot for the plus and minus side of the article. I hope it draws out some debate, and I didn’t really want to make it much longer, but as usual I hope you guys keep the opinions comments racism-free, friendly and respectful.

Two new features which are going to be appearing in this new-improved bi-weekly column, are going to be;

1. Goal of the Month.

What I’d like to do is run a Pes goal of the month, with the winner receiving Konami ‘goodies’, as yet to be confirmed. If you wish to enter, then I think a link to a YouTube video would be best, but as of today we’re trying to work out how, or whether people can record video from 360/ps3 without using a video camera. This should be starting in two weeks time, so get scoring!

2. Pes Lookalikes.

Including but not only limited to Pes, I’d like to start a feature where people email in players from the football world who look like other celebrities. Comical as well as astounding will be welcome! I’ll give two examples next week.

If anyone knows how to embed videos in Wordpress (the publishing software we use) as well as pictures, then that’d be of great help.

As always you can email me at francis_newall@hotmail.co.uk and comments on your preferences to what I talk about, whether you liked it, or just general comments on the article, are all very welcome.

Thanks,

-Francis

I was just wondering if there is much knowledge about what pes gamers in other countries thought about how pes 09 plays. If it is only people on this site or pesfan that are submiting complaints or views on how to make the game better then konami wouldnt take it as serious as people from around the world all saying the same thing.
I wonder if these views are being mirrored on pes forums in other countries.

I agree, it takes me a while to get into each pro evo at first too and i hate it at first but then it just clicks and i love it, and i get what you mean about having the feel for it, you know when you shoot before its even gone in whether its likely to go in or not, its a great game, always has been, always will be, i wish people would stop moaning non-stop and endlessly trying to find problems with it, just enjoy it and shut up!.

  8. RobotRodney Says:

Well i must love the game, cos i have basically been playin it for at least an hour or so, every day this past few weeks. At the moment, its ‘Be a Legend’ all the time. But i havent ‘cracked it’ by any means. In my 5th season and only making tiny improvements each year. Its hard work, im finding, but addictive as hell, cos i just wanna get better all the time. And when i play well, i find my team usually lose anyway, and win when i skip matches! Anyone else got any B.A.L. tales t tell?

  9. ath007 Says:

wow… i am suddenly happy and surprised by this ‘turn of events’ thing. i had, frankly saying, stopped visiting this site for a couple of days now. this was because you ppl just had to go on writing reports and complaints and i had to see ppl just slate this game on the forums and all. i started wondering “whats wrong with these ppl?”. this seemed more like a ritual, seeing all these ‘i dont like this, i dont like that’ comments every year as a new PES came into reference.

maybe i should recall that all these was there when PES6 was released. alllll these comments of ‘hate the game’ where there. back then you ppl used to compare it to PES5 and even sometimes PES4. even pes5 was flamed. in 6 u blamed the gameplay, the speed, the nature, the everything… but now look at the picture…once you get the hang of the game, you will love it…definitely. this is what PES is all about..

and look at this year’s edition. there were and still are, reports on goalkeeper blunders and frequent yellow cards and all. i am not blind as i say i dont dont see them much. but let me get a small scenario in the deal.

i was playing with a friend of mine, who is a frequent Fifa’er (lol), around two days back. when the match started, he made a “its looks just like fifa” statement. but when the match started, he expected to win half of the many tackles he made, half of the many passes me made and a couple of shots he wanted to see in the back of the net… i didnt say anything during the ‘ordeal’. in the end, match stats had him with around 11 yellow cards, 3 red cards in it, some 17+ fouls and one goal from 6 shots. and i had to face some 8 players or so, on his side in the end.

but on my part, i had no yellow, no reds, 3 fouls and 9 shots on target with 6 goals in. now whats with that?!!? any clue, ppl?

thats the point, once you know how the game plays, you will really enjoy the game. and he said if he did all that what he did in the game we had, was it in fifa, he would have got every tackle, and every shot and all.. funny, just press a button and there you get the result.

and another thing, the goalkeeper; i dont let him face many of a dangerous shot (so he fumbles and lets loose), i let my defenders handle those situations where i strangle the ball off the opponents. but there wont be anything i cant do when its on one-on-one situations, other than bring the goalkeeper forward. thats all.

the games all about pure virtual precision and timing of when you press the buttons and when you get to the right spot, rather than run half way along the ground and press a button, just like that, to see the ball in the back of the net. sorry, but thats fifa, bro. and one thing, i havent tried any fifa later than fifa 2000, cuz its a waste of my time and i dont care.

and if you guys dont think this is enoguh and want to get the real feeling and all, i say go strap up your boots, get some balls (lol), and get outside.. there you will feel the dynamic weather effect, with all rain, wind and heat, with the feel of the game, the emotions, the real fun, the sweat, the effects, the injuries and the real complaints of how life is… if you cant get that too.. i say GO GET A LIFE, PPL!!!

    p.s.
that friend of mine got a copy of the game for himself and he swears that by some weeks time, he will come back to trash me.. hehe… so i guess i will be enjoying this for a long time to come..

    final statement of his
“its wayyyy better than fifa, man..”
and he uninstalls fifa from his PC to make space(way) for the only game! happily!

    —–

    and to you francis,
superb article.. and great points you made there…
really appreciate the way you guys give life to the best PES website out there..

    Cheerios!

  10. ath007 Says:

    @ RobotRodney

exact same thing with me, dude… every team i join and play with seems to go down in performance when i am in there… hahaha…

but last nite i did a little bit of performance, involved myself into the middle of the pitch and put up a lot of runs in to spaces.. and in the end, i assisted one goal and was involved in the attack that lead to the second. and we won…

but usually thats not the case, and it does bother me… hehe

  11. ykl Says:

definitely right, you need to feel it rather just complained the shooting system very bad, gameplay rubbish and the speed of long passing very slow……i spent at least 1 an half hour per day in enjoy pes09 (offline only}, i played in top player in master league, i’m able to score at least 1 to 3 goals per match( but sometimes still loose even i’m score). i’ve been playing pes09 more than a month and i would say that, pes09 absolutely better than other footie game in terms of gameplay. But overall the whole package isn’t the best such as online lag and the concept of master league mode…..from malaysia.

Just want to say Pes 9 was a good game from the start and even better since the patches came out. I feel websites that make reviews on a game should review this game again with patches installed. It’s not a perfect game and online still has issues but the gameplay is good.

  15. jimmy Says:

I agree completely on the goalkeepers issue. I’ve noticed that they seem to be ridiculously butter-fingered, spilling the majority of reasonably well-struck shots, but also seem able to pull off frequent miraculous recovery-stops. I’ve lost count of the number of times the keeper has spilled a hopeful long shot straight onto the toes of my advancing number 9, only to somehow get up and hurl himself across the goal to get his fingertips to the resulting follow-up shot. This will sometimes happen several times in a row. Note to Konami: This does not happen that often in real football.

  16. Jor Says:

Still no mention of the online REGISTRATION process. Still no mention. Still no mention that you need three usernames to join the friggin’ think!!!?? Konami ID (who cares). Game ID and Sign in ID, or whatever the crap it’s called. Three ID’s. What crack are these guys smoking!??

As I mention several times. Konami need to get their head out of their ass and allow us to play online with our Playstation ID’s. No registration whatsoever. Exactly like Tiger Woods, Call of Duty and Little Big Planet. This is the biggest oversight of the whole online thing, the rest is just testing and evolution, which takes time, sometimes too much.

They need to “ABANDON” the whole registration process, COMPLETELY!!!!! And don’t get me started in that ridiculous form for registration, or they fact that every time I want to play I have to agree twice and press Ok to about 15 panels. This is “BEYOND RIDICULOUS”.

  17. Tribalus Says:

Recently i was introduced to this website by a pal of mine at the work place, some of you know him as “uball”, a stupid monicker to say the least but a great buddy to go head to head with on PES09′.
Let me start by saying that i love PES09′, yes, it’s definitely not the best. sure, it has the worst menu designs ever, sure, graphically can’t compete with the powerhouse EA when it comes to “huge budgets” but it’s loads of football fun.
As for online play, well let me just say, in Malaysia (use a map please), even when you do have a great Konami server, Malaysia has the worst ISP ever, it’s called streamyx ( go on Google and type “streamyx sucks” and read what most Malaysians say), so i can’t really comment on the online play but from what i can tell by playing other online games, PES definitely brings in the pain, like a love one doing drugs on a sunny sunday morning in front of a priest who has some “holy” guns..wait..nevermind.moving on.
My first impression after the horrid display of the menus was like “hey, shadow effect…wow..” and wondered was it that necessary for me to shell out at least 8GB of space on my computer for say, less graphical euphoric bliss..i think not but it’s not such a big issue.
I started a match ( i was using Manchester United against Liverpool on pro,i use pro normally as a benchmark of how it would generally be using top player) and the pace was slow-built and timing was, again, very important.
I realize that the stats are not updated (even after the update, thanks Uball for updating me about it), which is annoying since that means my saturdays will be me “updating” the stats. But no matter, the game, it was uber fun. Eventhough being a Machester United fan,it was strange that C.Ronaldo was too powerful, a bit tone down and he would be perfect. I scored 1-0 at the end, perhaps i wasn’t used to the pace, or perhaps the way it feels but it was a win i have to say, lit one in me.
To cut a long story short, master league is the same( still less options than the PS2 version), Champions league is less to be desired(i wish it was in ML), i started disliking the idea of BAL but when i tried it a couple of times i ended up glued to it( i played until 3am last night and had to wake up around 5:30am to get to work), i don’t like the tackles in the penalty box(it’s weird for a defender to ALWAYS try to do that when i get too close to the goalkeeper), eventho i win at times. I kinda like the new shooting system(not so sure yet really but i guess it’s okay, living with it i suppose).
I’ve tried Fifa, played it for more than a week, and i still find it boring, i guess it could be preferences, i still love going one on one on PES09′ with my pals when we have a get-together and get a cold hard stare from our gals..or “WAGS”..lol.

  18. Carl Says:

There are some aspects of the game which are a bit silly, like when you’re a defender and you’re going to kick the ball over your head for a clearance and the player sometimes kicks the ball in their own face. It is comical and can happen in real football but it’s just not right.

  19. bignuts Says:

to Ath007, if you havnt played fifa since 2000, wat the f do you know about it? Pes this year and last is a f***ing disgrace! it reminds me of those ****ty arcade world cup games you would play on the seafront slot arcades some 20 years ago. Pes 6 was the pinacle, it was awesome, better than both of this years offerings from EA and Konami. We need a revised game engine, comprehensive edit mode, and get rid of those plastic graphics, they look ****. Until then accept that this years pes is inferior to fifa. The preowned section in Game will show that, as will the dramatic halfing in price.

  26. Eclipse Dj Says:

@ 19. (bignuts) – I think the dramatic halving in price just goes to show that these are the drastic measures other companies have to go to to get their games noticed and circulated amongst the masses, to even stand a chance of attracting some of the EA sheep followers.

These people think that only EA games exist and are too blinkered to even contemplate that maybe, just maybe another company’s game is actually better in many ways.

These are the people who just buy the annual updates, regardless of poor/average reviews. They get sucked in by the marketing, buy pier pressure at school/college/work to follow the masses like a sheep.

Case in point is Need For Speed: Underground, very average reviews but despite this and the fact that the highly praised Midnight Club LA is superior in many ways (also slashed to £17.99), NFS will yet again sell like hot cakes (probably be Xmas no 1 again) and why? Because it is a brand name that people are buying into. The brands of NFS and FIFA have been rammed down everyone’s throats thanks to EA’s marketing campaigns.

I personally choose a game based on reviews and playability, I’m not a sheep, I’m not frightened to have my own opinions that differ from friends and family.

The fact is that this year, more than ever before, there is not much between FIFA and PES as an overall package. So it comes down to which you prefer.

I can happily admit that FIFA has superior commentary, animation, online modes, more teams, stadiums, official kits etc but I chose PES based on the experience it gives during each match, for me it has the edge, it feels more rewarding, more challenging, more exciting. Players likenesses, I believe, are far more detailed and realistic than the shiny plastic faces found in FIFA. But this is my opinion, my choice.

  27. Eclipse Dj Says:

WTF is up with all these…

“FIFA’s crap PES is best” or
“PES is crap FIFA rules” (cough – post 5)

That really is blinkered and pathetic, it’s playground talk! It’s like play school “my dads better than your dad!”

I’m mature enough to see good and bad points in both games, both games excel in different ways, both have good reviews but offer different experiences. Don’t be so narrow minded in thinking your choice is the superior choice.

  35. ath007 Says:

    @big nuts

I agree with what u say. But wait. Didnt u read my ‘rant’ properly or something? i never mentioned that i havent ’seen anything’ aftr fifa 2000. ofcourse i have seen them, all the way till 08. jst that i havent played them (just played 2-3 matches of 08 which mostly ended at half time, cuz it suddenly got me bored). it didnt look worth spending much time on. my opinion.

And another thing is i havent even mentioned pes 08. I too agree that it wasnt worth the standard and true potential of what konami can actually do. compared to that, pes 09 is farrr better. And it can reach the milestone set by 06(i hope.. 06 ws and is the best). btw, i played and still enjoyed 08 throughout the year, even with all the complaints i had.

Guess what, if pes had the whole package of everything like online, all leagues and licenses, and stuff.. would anyone even bother to wonder if something like EA’s FIFA exists???

Thats, i think, gonna be something that wouldnt be seen soon enough. (I feel EA has control over Konami’s work.)

This years fifa ‘looks’ better, as i had said earlier.. but it still havent reached the class of gameplay and entertainment given from Pes. :)
    Period.

And till then, i will choose pes for my share of virtual football. Others will have their opinions.

  36. PES VRS FIFA Says:

@ath007 Fifa in PC is 100% different from consoles(360/PS3)

I love PES but we all have to look for the best game, be it PES or FIFA. Stop the franatics about the game. It has many errors. Ive played basically equal time both fifa and PES. PES has much better gameplay but fifa also has its share. As well as PES, after months, it grows. Im happy having both copies. I do recomend PES over FIFA but fifa is a VERY GOOD game.

Lets strive to make PES better and comment on the bad things that can make 2010 a better game. Overall dont waste readers time on bull talk and comment on the game not on ridiculous posts.

pesgaming managers, beware regulars are sick of reading through many bull posts. Im one of them. you should check why this is…

  37. Simon Mcdermott Says:

Hello , Im back. Sorry for the wait. First things first, after spending a couple of days glued (lol!) to the screen, Ive managed to UNDERSTAND Pes09. Oh and its exciting. Ive finally got my head around (everything!) the controls and stuff. With pleasure i quote Pes 09 is a great game. Sure Fifa have abetter”get into it” game but Pes 09 is still strong and delivers smoothly . This does oppose everythinh Ive ever said but you WILL all understand once you get into it. Gud on yar Konami!!!

  38. four20 Says:

I dont agree even slightly with your view that the slide tackles are good on this version of pes. Dont get me wrong, i love the game but there seem so many times when the ball is clearly won fairly from a slide tackle, yet the ref gives a free kick and a yellow card. This is even worse when the tackle takes place in the box. Ive seen so many slide tackles where the ball couldnt have been won more fairly but because the attacking player falls over, a PK is given. It seems to happen all the time in my BAL game. One of the defenders will slide in the box, make a clean tackle, yet a PK is given anyway, most often with a red card too. To me the slide tackles just seem like a lottery eg- put in a slide tackle and even if u win the ball 100% fairly you might conceed a FK and get a card.

Whilst talking about lotterys, the PKs are ridiculous. Ive played over 200 hours of pro ev between master league and BAL and nearly every PK ive had has missed the target. You pick a direction, they kick it wide/over. Theres no control over it at all. Its so dumb and annoying. They really need to sort it out.

i agree that the game does need a bedding in period but once it clicks it is a very good game but still has its faults for example i agree with post 38 the slide tackles are horrible i was playing in ML the other day and Wes Brown won the ball perfectly but because the striker fell over he got a second yellow and was sent off!!this is definately a bad point in some instances.on the subject of penalties i must admit i don’t find this aspect hard even when i hit them into the top corner is this a common issue with many others??

yes there is a problem with slide tackles. What is most annoying ,it clearly states that in order to execute this movement the circle button needs to be pressed.Well it happens without this bein pressed, and also no button at all, consequently ending in a yellow/red card.but defending is yhe weakest part of the game, but once mastered, the cards become less, resulting in fouls becoming less also, you just ned to hold off from the player completely and quickly bring another player in to tackle from tthe front, not easy to do but it is possible

i agree with the not pressing a button but the action still occurs (i.e slide tackle) it does seem to only happen when defending i was playing with my mate the other day he crossed the ball in but i decided to let it run, somehow essien took it upon himself to perform a diving header resulting in an own goal without me pressing a button!!this is strange especially as i don’t see my striker shooting randomly without a button press in attack and scoring for me lol
