PES Off! 4th December 2008

I’d like to start off this week by thanking everyone for all their feedback on the online issues we’ve been facing.  The information was compiled and sent to Konami.

I’ve listed all the information that I sent, and I hope it meets with most people’s approval – there’s always someone that won’t be happy…  So without much further ado:

The two biggest fundamental flaws which would make the online game bearable are:

1. Connection issues

Many people are saying that even having a green connection does not guarantee a quality game.  Playing with a green connection against an opponent on anything less is a waste of time.

There must be ways to address the lag suffered in games by most people playing online.

Online play now counts as a major factor in selecting a football title to play with friends.  As things stand, FIFA2009 is converting many, many PES fans purely because they want a reliable online game.  Fixing this must be made a priority for both the current version of the game, as well as for the next version.

2. Online difficulty

Please put the game difficulty level up to “Top Player” immediately.  A quick online update can’t be too hard to fix.  Right now, having the difficulty fixed on “Beginner” is more conducive to having cricket scores, rather than realistic football results.

Other factors which are affecting the whole online experience are:

Online Lobby

1. The whole interface is very clunky and not very intuitive at all.

As usual, most fans will point Konami in the direction of FIFA presentation to see

How they have mastered the interface making the whole experience enjoyable.

2. People would like to see a system that allows the players to restrict selections to be outside of the Champion’s League elect.  Currently the system allows you to refine teams to be either club or national sides.  Having a new filter which allowed only teams outside of the CL bunch would be very useful.

3. It can take a long time to find a suitable match.  Instead of spending time playing games, people are spending time trying to find people with suitable connections and get good games.

4. When attempting to pick teams, if you find that your opponent has a red connection (or even amber) whilst you have a green connection, there is no way to back out the game, other than rebooting.

5.  Restricting people to local regions only may be a good way forward.  Even restricting games to people’s own countries may be a drastic but good measure to ensure good quality of games.  Is that a possibility with PES2009 in the February update?

6. Some people are complaining that even trying to host a room is problematic.  The error message “An error has occurred” is displayed, and means they can’t play online.  Surely these types of issues must be addressed?

7. Get rid of this “Konami ID” agreement – its pointless!

General online play improvements

A better rating system where all teams are graded (could be A to D)

Where the number of points awarded for winning with a “D” team are a lot higher than an “A” team.  Example “A” team: Barcelona, example “D” team: Wigan.  All teams should be graded upfront.  This could help encourage people to move away from the very big teams that virtually guarantee wins.

2. Goal replay times need to be shrunk.  If people really want to rewatch them – they can store them for themselves.  Having idiots scoring easy goals, and then replaying them to rile players is really annoying.

Everyone that has provided feedback pretty much says that they are happy with their net connections, and do not really encounter chronic lag on any other online game, other than PES.  We couldn’t make it any more clearer that the online issues are a major Konami problem that needs addressing immediately.

The future of the series rides on a working online game.

Please go to the following link to read details of individual responses to the question about lag, if you so wish:

http://www.pesgaming.com/blog/pes-2009-news/335/pes-off-13th-november-2008/

OK so that was everything that I sent to them.  Fingers crossed on whether this information is used!

I am interested in trying to get some discussions on tactics and tips on how to get the most out of PES 2009, so will look to kick that off in the near future.

In the meantime, I was wondering if people could help one our site visitors Blake in telling him how to do the Ronaldo heel flick with the ball to change direction.  I don’t play with Ronaldo, and so don’t know how to pull the trick off.  Can anyone enlighten us?

As usual, if anyone has any questions, then please don’t hesitate to email me at: dougiedonut@pesgaming.com.  One final note – for all those people who have found themselves banned from commenting on the site, if you send me a suitable apology and assure me that future conduct will be in line with what we expect of individuals, I will be happy to reconsider reinstating them in the near future.  No pressure.

Thanks for reading.

  1. FrancisN Says:

    Nice work Dougie :)

I think you meant ‘unbearable’ however! I’m of the view that Konami will address practically nothing in the February update, because this is time they could spend on Pes ‘10. And they’re a corporate machine :(

  2. Caniggia Says:

I mean the biggest problem KONAMI-Europe has is not that they can not gather information from the fans. It is how they present the info to the japanese PES-team. I don’t think they will get any of the ideas in the next game if their approach is “PUT THIS IN THE GAME”. Maybe they should invest in more english speaking japanese people on the team in the UK.

  3. Arian Says:

KONAMI japan (read team SEABASS) do not care what we or the Europe office thinks! They´ve had 3 years to change the online problems and they have not! There is no other game released in 2008 that has online problems ! NONE !
What we should do is not to buy the next PES. That´s the only way to bring about a change !

    BOYCOTT PES 2010 !
    BOYCOTT PES 2010 !
    BOYCOTT PES 2010 !

  4. Arian Says:

And stay that damn FIFA too !

  5. Arian Says:

    Stay “OFF” ,sorry

  6. Caniggia Says:

I don’t even think that not buying PES 2010 will change anything. Their focus is still on the japanese market and bringing out a game with the J-League. Europe will never be as interesting and I understand them. The PES-Teams values does not lay in the economical interest of their consumers instead it is in the artistic way they want to be recognised (even if they create a bad game it is still different).

The one that could change that is the chief of KONAMI, but maybe he feels the same as the PES-Team.

  7. wolfman Says:

an online league against yr mate where u and a mate control the other teams as well no computer controling the other teams just humans and it would b nice if it could b done offline as well thats the only problem i have with the game and the online problems cheers

  8. wolfman Says:

plus been playing me mate online his stats r that poor i was getting no points 4 a win even with small teams now thats ****e

  9. Nino Says:

very good points, have only played online a hand full of times, mostly in legends and has been very laggy

  10. wolvesfan Says:

thanks doughie hopefully next years is perfect but still playin 09 to bits and is still a great game! could be a lot better but still far better then 08! at least this one is playable online (at times!)

  11. bignuts Says:

If people are prepared to put up with he tripe that is pes 09, then you get what you deserve. How anyone who played the demo went out and bought the ****e on release defies belief. get your heads out of your arses and see the light — PES DIED WHEN 08 CAME OUT, YOU SHOULD HAVE BOYCOTT THIS YEARS!!! Duuuuuh.

  12. ash7612 Says:

you need to shut up, have you played pes2009 this year or are you just speaking from your experiences from the demo? it’s about this time of year when the fifa fans are starting to play pro evo because they have got bored of it by now.

  13. goran Says:

pes2009 is the last straw i ain’t buying pes2010, because on recent evidence it will be ****e too. this don’t mean i will alternatively buy fifa because although they are both football games i don’t see them as the same game. pes people play fifa expecting fifa gameplay then think it ****. like fifa play pes and expect fifa presenation and then think its ****. my point is you take the game as it own brand and how it’s improved within itself, and for me as pes fan the game has been goin backwards. i can’t play a single decent game online and my connection good, i have no problem with any other game.

  14. Jor Says:

“7. Get rid of this “Konami ID” agreement – its pointless!”

Is that all you have to say about this!!??? WTF?

STILL, no mention of the “actual” ‘registration form’. The ridiculous, convoluted, bastardized thing – which I’m becoming convinced is design to put off people signing to, only to find out how God awful the online experience is. Is mega-long and complicated because Konami are ‘that’ embarrassed by their online experience!

STILL, no mention of the fact that you need to register, wait for it.. drum roll………….

“3″ usernames to sign up! Yeah 3, I’m not joking.

Konami ID, PES ID, and a Game ID. What the ****?

Simply put, you should have said this:

“Get rid of the registration process to sign up for online play COMPLETELY! And allow us to use our Playstation ID’s to play PES online.”

That’s right, you sign in – that’s it! Just like Little Big Planet, Tiger Woods, and many other online games for the PS3. It wasn’t difficult, yet you still didn’t mention it. I’m actually disappointed I was so vocal about this thing, because I’ve yet to see that the people who need to hear this complaint have a pair of ****ing ears.

I only swore because I know it will be starred out. I’m really not a flamer – I love PES (Offline).

    *shakes head*

    *…and again*

  15. Mike Says:

The guy above me (Jor) speaks the truth. Amen brother. ^^^

  16. Alan Titch Says:

I agree Mike, Jor pretty much summed up the most annoying part for me personally. It’s ****ing crazy that this wasn’t addressed months ago.

  17. rabbit Says:

post 16 & 17.. totally agreed it’s a shambles and quite frankly embarassing for konami

  18. christos Says:

All our hopes are for the february update. If they don’t fix it don’t bother to release pes2010 noone will buy it,everyone will buy fifa which i believe it will be perfect if they fix the graphics

  19. 2010 Our Last HOPE Says:

  20. kev Says:

play with teams within ur own region?.I noticed theres polish players on pes who do they go? if ur that good a player ul beat people who go barca,at end o day u go whatever team u want,.

  21. Dan Says:

i dont play online pes cause i dont have a connection for some reason but by the sounds of it im not missing anything

  22. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

That is the trouble with us PS3 gamers,we are always HOPING.In this day and age we shouldnt have to be hoping. If Konami cannot see there is a major online problem, then forget about hoping anymore ,because things will remain the same.Another year of only half a game

  23. Boycott PES Says:

Do not buy the next title PES 2010 ! ! ! Do not act like stupid sheep that team SEABASS can **** around with in any direction they want. BOYCOTT PES 2010 ! DO NOT BUY THE NEXT TITLE ! SEND THE WORD ! Specially you guys who are responsible for this forum !

  24. CoolThaDude Says:

All the people talking this boycotting nonsense should shut the **** up and get a life. Go boycott your mom while your at it. Just start from butt crack and work your way down assholes.

  25. goran Says:

    (26) thats what people buying pes are doing to konami at the moment.

  26. Pes has died Says:

Online is shocking, ive gone back to pes 6 and will without doubt be playing that when pes 2010 arrives with exactly the same problems, konami are ignorant lazy c*nts!

  27. ash7612 Says:

come on get real, none of you will boycott pes 2010, i mean NONE of you, because you all love PES too much, look how much it means to you, another year without a football game will drive you all crazy and eventually you will give in, now you can butt crack that all you want

  28. UNDERTAKER Says:

    MAY PES REST IN PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  29. KLAATU Says:

I agree what you say john, this is completely not on, i wonder if anyone else is suffering from the same thing

  30. Alex JT22 Says:

the problem if half the ppl boycotted pes i believe they wud stop making the seris for now which would be bad for the genre as a whole. even ppl who hate pes and love fifa should be praying that the seris is still around for years to come as this makes it so fifa has to keep improving and inovating to be one step ahead of pes if there was no competition fifa will put less money and effort in making fifa games leaving the market with one ok football game rather than to good football games. i do understand with ppl who are annoyed as i am with the lack of respect konami are giving the fans by putting out this game and not fixing the hundreads of faults, as well as it being pes 2008.5. really its lucky this winter has been an amazing line up of games to play which has made it not so bad

  31. rabbit Says:

good point actually @33.. i played pes for a while, offline it’s excellent but online is shockingly bad, but as there is so many other good games out there it hasn’t really bothered me.. i know it should have cos it cost me 40 quid!! i live in hope that 20.10 will be the bomb!!! who knows

  32. Take a Chill Pill Says:

Can’t help but feel you guys are going a little bit over the top. I agree these flaws are pretty bad but jesus, PES09 is far superior to last years effort. It’ll get there, chill out.

  33. Anonymous Says:

when talking about half of pes fans boycotting, who do you refer to?

Don’t get the illusion that all PEsgaming fans are the only fans. or just UK fans are the only fans. There are fans that love PES09 from the americas, to europe to asia.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see that the people who are not satisfied with the game are less than those who like the game.

stop the nonsense about boycotting. if you don’t like the game don’t buy it. end of story!!!

i will keep buying PES games cause that’s the gameplay that I like and the closest to real football.

  34. balba Says:

**** your game PES 2009,and **** how ever made it,you all suck.bagamias pula in jocu vostru morti mami voastre de handicapati si eu as face un joc mai bun ca voi bah gastelor.sami sugeti pula voi si toate jocurile de la PES.sa ma fut in capu vostru

  35. Dumbed Down Says:

@37 have you been online at all? Theres hardly anyone playing it at all which speaks volumes to me

  36. Simon McDermott Says:

Guys buy Call Of Duty5 it is excellent online, I have given up playing footy games for a while because it is so good, Konami could learn alot from Activision, it has better online than any other game I have played.
I’m definitely boycotting Pes2010 if its as bad as 2009, I think I will rent the game first next year, just so I don’t get conned by dishonest magazine reviews. Also it would still count as a boycott because I wouldn’t have actually bought the game.
Good column again DD, that is a very honest list of problems that we’ve all been encountering. Its just bad programming at the end of the day, online connections in matches are supposed to be slowed down to the same speed as the slowest connection, therefore they operate at the same speed. This doesn’t seem to happen with Pes and the results of this are there for everyone to behold.

  37. passthedutchie Says:

    Lost all interest!

  38. Batisa Says:

PES IS THE ANIMAL OF GAMES

  39. ash7612 Says:

  42. Anonymous Says:

Why is Konami games always have online problems!
    PES 2009 and MGS4

  43. doucheBags Says:

@Marko good point mate. Clearly this dumb obsession about the game and who is better and who is worse is becoming too much. This forum has its value in providing content/info for new game releases. Stop moaning. either play the game or don’t.

  44. Jahmikes9 Says:

Just A general comment a pes,one improvement that i would like to see is more than two persons commentating on the matches. Two good commentator are (Tommy Symth & Derrick Rae).Feel free to responce.

  45. franky two thumbs Says:

hello my name is franky and i feel i should say sorry, the couple of time s i ve posted in have just been snotty little messages aimed at mostly innocent people, its just that i am a pes fan like everybody else that visits this site, a bloody great game despite what some of the whiners say but it pains me that im associated with the rest of you geeks, i mean i ve never owned a set of spectacles, never had a problem with acne, not once have i fornicated with a cousin but hear i am amongst you s so i guess im mostly angry at myself. One love pes gaming. X

  46. Jahmikes9 Says:

I think you are getting in all wrong. What i am actually saying is that every match you have the same set of commentators, why not mix the commentary just like in real life.Different commentators for different matches.

  47. franky two thumbs Says:

was only jokin before, totally get where your coming from it would be better to get some variation on the commentary, probably comes down to budgets, still a good thought though its fresh ideas like that, that could really take the game forwards

  48. samir Says:

i have pes 09 for the pc. i bought it. i have never once been able to get online, always end up with connection error crap. why did i buy this? for online play, offline play i can just download the crap and job done. i cudnt even get the roster updated through the game so had to get the manually. pes5 was ok for online but since that i have never been able to play online in a pes since. wtf konami, dics.

  49. Jahmikes9 Says:

ok Franky get your point,no offense taken. As we say in Jamaica NO PROBLEM MAAN.

  50. Jon Says:

Samir – Get a life idiot.

  51. Anonymous Says:

  52. Anonymous is retarded Says:

I tried it and it sux.

I just want to correct you. pes is improved from last year.

  53. franky two thumbs Says:

i agree, have seen f ifa and for me its just a turd wrapped in glitter, pretty to look at but once you get past the surface you know your not going to delve deeper for too long.

  54. franky two thumbs Says:

    man, thats just good writing.

  55. AP Says:
