PES Off!! 25th June 2009
Posted by dougiedonut in PES 2009 News on Thu 25 Jun
Thank you to everyone who has responded with questions for us to ask the Konami Producer. I shall be creating a list of questions to ask shortly, and your input has been central to this process, so hopefully we get some good answers to questions that matter to us.
There has been a wide range of questions posted back in comments, and we will be looking to prepare a list which will mean a good few of the questions won’t make the list. So the priority will be on the more deep and meaningful questions, such as about online play, rather than using up a valuable question to ask whether shirts will be untucked (sorry to the guys who wanted to know this!).
I’ve been reading comments being left on the site for a couple of articles, and feel that I have to address the undercurrent of fans who can’t quite seem to shake off the shackles of pessimism for the game. I can totally understand where they are coming from, based on the last few iterations of the game, particularly on the 360 and PS3 systems. I can also understand that a lot of people don’t want to get excited, since they will only more dissappointment to deal with IF the game did not deliver an acceptable level of improvements. But I would like to say to these people to just cast their minds back even two to three years ago and to think what has changed between then and now. I’m talking about the recognition of fan power by Konami. We have never had a solid platform from which to voice our concerns.
Konami have never in the past entered into serious dialogue with us, or truly listened to our concerns and complaints with the game. I’d now like these same people to ask themselves whether they see a significant change in Konami’s attitude to the game this time round.
Again I’m talking about the fact that they have increased their development team size by 200 people. In game development team sizes this is a huge increase, and demonstrates how they are taking not only the threat from FIFA seriously, but also listening to what we want fixed in PES.
I think it’s fair to say that the PES games (as well as all previous iterations of the game in the past – ISS, ISS Pro, Winning Eleven etc) have always had a quirky but charming nature. We’ve all laughed at the presentation, or the stupid player names, or various other aspects which weren’t exactly great. But now that the core game has so many flaws that the core fans are disenfranchised with the series, we’re not going to sit back and keep playing the game with all it’s faults.
So to address this, Konami are making strides to address the types of concerns we have. You only have to read the range of comments from any article to see the types of things that matter to PES fans, to understand that Konami won’t be able to satisfy everyone’s requirements. There are various areas of the game which all need addressing, and so these will be rightfully prioritised by Konami. In the past, we didn’t care if the stadiums didn’t look great, or if hairstyles weren’t up to date on players etc, as long as the game engine was the brilliant one which we have been accustomed to for so long. But with the new PS3/360 machines, we have seen Konami struggle to continue their work seamlessly.
To these people who fear for PES 2010, who think that Konami will just release the same old game with a few tweaks here and there, I’d like to say that they should keep faith, and trust in Konami. This is a bold statement for me to make, since I haven’t seen what the game will end up as. So what’s making me think and believe in Konami? The answer is simple – look back at Konami’s footballing legacy, and ask yourself whether the geniuses that made PES what it is, can come back from the criticism they have received in the past? I have faith in Konami because for years they gave us footballing brilliance. They’ve struggled of late, but the key thing is that they have recognised this, and have taken steps to try to rectify the situation.
If Konami hadn’t conversed with the fans through various forums, if they hadn’t increased the development team size, then I too would be very worried for PES2010. But the reality is that they have.
I want to say that we shouldn’t expect a perfect PES 2010 come October either. Personally I think it will be very unrealistic to expect Konami to have addressed everything that is wrong with the game in such a short spell of time. But I think that if we see significant evidence and proof of a vastly improved game, we will stick with Konami to perfect the series. I think Konami will need at least another iteration to get the game back to the top of the pile, but this is purely conjecture on my part – it’s not based on facts. We may be very surprised at the level of improvements this time round, but I won’t expect everything to be fixed.
If I see the core game engine improved, with better footballing abilities for players then that will give me hope for the game.
People are also questioning the timing of the new Official Konami PES Forum, and it’s impact on PES2010. I think it’s fair to say that the forum has been set up for future PES work. Regular readers from our site will know that the criteria for PES2010 was set in stone by December 2008, and has been worked on since.
Maybe one or two minor tweaks may be made from the new forum for PES2010, but certainly nothing fundamental will make PES2010.
One interesting question I may be asking Konami is whether we can expect regular game updates throughout the game to make tweaks to gameplay for future releases. This may be something they are considering already, but hopefully I can get some info on that.
The new forum is a fantastic way for everyone to ensure Konami hears what they have to say. So as long as the comments are respectful, I’m sure they will be read, and maybe even acted upon. This is all new for us and Konami, and I’m sure we will see how it works, and hopefully improves going forward.
Right, that’s me done this week. I hope that I have helped those people who are set up for dissappointment to not quite give up on PES.
Konami know how important PES is not just to their success, but to us, real fans of the beautiful game.
Thanks for reading.

FIRST!! YASS
second lol
my problem is that they say xbox 360 and ps3 are the most powerful consoles out their and they can put so much infomation in one game!?!?!?!?
so why is it so hard to put all the infomation on a football game when u look at games such as mgs4, gta4 thirs is so much infomation in them game i think they jus dont care about football game anymore (”¬)!!
The fact that Masters League sounds like it’s had a massive revamp will be enough for me to buy PES 2010. I spend 90% of the game on this mode and can’t wait to play Champs lg and Uefa cup in ML :) It sounds like they’ve improved the transfer system too. If the passing and keepers have been improved then it’ll be a massive step in the right direction.
I just really hope they get the gameplay balance right this time – I don’t want to feel as if I’m playing football in fast forward mode!! Slow it down a little konami please!
We cant expect a perfect game for 2010 ?
Why not Dougie ?
Dont give the reason that they have not had enough time for god sake! Since the realese of 2008 things have been majorly disapointing. Its an insult to us fans who shell out 40 odd quid on this game to say that.
Like so many others if this PES is not a huge improvement then i wont be touching another copy of this franchise, we have waited years for a game thats bug free and playable both offline and online, On a next gen console this should not even be a factor.
The fact that last year they aquired the CL mode and could not even implement it in the ML just showed how lazy they are getting. One more chance for Konami and if they stumble then they can say goodbye to a hell of alot of fans and their reputation that they have relied on for the past 3 years.
Ok dougiedonut ! What do we do if PES 2010 turns out to be another dissapointment ?
I could never be pessimistic about Pro Evo, i started playing footie games with Kick Off 2 on a crappy green amstrad so whatever the flaws of Pes2010 its light years away form what i ever expected from a computer footy sim!
Good Work Konami, keep it up!
To honest here, it’s not a question of whether Konami can make a quality footy game, as they have proven track record. It’s rather a case of whether they can be bothered to make a quality game.
I don’t know about you guys, but i didn’t feel any love or effort was given to the last two installments.
Well said RFC,as a gaming community we have put up with mediocre games for the last 2 years ,and the next installment needs to be correct ,in all aspects of the game.It is the year 2009,and you cannot tell me that being able to play someone overseas,or in the uk should be an issue as far as online gaming is concerned.SO much expectation,as in the past years ,but yet ,on my part ,so much apprehension that things will not be what they are supposed to be.Konami, please prove me wrong,as nothing short of very good will be acceptable. You owe us all ,as you have failed to deliver for 2 years, but have happily lined your pockets with our money, and yet do not think twice to rectify your mistakes. Not even an apology for all the gaming fans that have forked out large sums of money ,purely on the experiences they have had in the past with this title.Do not fail us this year,or I fgeel it is the end for you
I firmly belive that Konami and Seabass recognize this 2010 installment to be their last chance saloon for their PES series. I agree with people who say they have got lazy, and believe that they rested on their laurels after pes 4 on the ps2 and that the series has been getting worse since then. And while I felt let down yet again with 2009, the lengths that the production team have gone to for 2010 inspires me with some hope. I belive that how poorly recieved the last 2 versions of this game have been was the wake up call they needed to get their backsides in gear yet again.
With power available to them from the 360 and ps3 they should be able to deliver the greatest football simulation ever seen, theres no space for crap graphics, poor presentation and god awfull online play in this day and age and they know that!
Exactly wakey!
Started off playing FIFA on the Mega Drive, moved to ISS when on the N64 and continued with PES onto the PS and beyond. This year was the first year I bought a FIFA title for years and I enjoyed it for a while, but it has the same old flaws that become more evident the more you play. At the moment PES is still the better game and in October I expect to find it will have improved, I will probably buy both again, but there is always the hope that I wont have to and I will be able to play my beloved Master League for the full year, backed up with a worthwhile online experience. You have got to have faith brother and although ,y game of choice will undoubtedly be PES, its not a question of loyalty for me, its the better game and if Konami slip up people should vote with their feet. I doubt that Seabass is going to be too worried about us blindly playing an inferior game when he cranks up the stereo in his Aston Martin on his way to meet his caviar dealer before heading back to his high-gated home to relax in the arms of a high class trophy wife….
While the older ISS,ISS PRO games are very basic interms of graphics and features and admittedly slightly on the querky side there are elements and ideas in those games that would elevate and enhance pes2010 and beyond and should not be ignored.
I actually like and hugely enjoy pes2009 on the ps3 believing it to be one of the best simulations of football made, certainly better and more playable then any previous PES on the ps2.While certainly not perfect fundamentally its right and whats clear more then anything else is its on the right tracks.
What a lot of people need to put into context is the improvement of pes2009 over pes2008 on the next gen platforms in 12 months, its massive and demonstrates that this year pes2010 will be a even better more refined game then pes2009.It was always going to take around three years to really nail PES on the next gen formats a year or even two is just not long enough to iron out any kinks or fully implement everything konami had envisioned for PES on the next gen consoles.
Having watched a lot of federations cup football this week and then firing up my copy of pes2009 on the ps3 its uncanny how close it is to replicating every facet of the modern game and yes while it still has its faults to not build on pes2009 would be a real shame.I feel the new improvements will turn pes2010 into the perfect game as it only needs small changes which where probably already planned but never implemented due to the limited development time konami had between pes2008-pes2009.
The biggest worry about PES 10, is not how much konami are gonna improve, its what are they gonna take away!!
For the past few instalments they have taken features out! I’d put good money on the Champs league only being playabe throught the Master League!! lol
Let us not forget how long most next gen games take to develope now between 2-4 years and even then are rarely perfect. Its easy to be critical but
konami are doing a good job considering what there limited developemment time is every year.We all bellyache but still play pes all year long dispite its minor flaws because there is nothing else like it.I believe once the smoothness of the animation is adressed we will all be happy as the game will look and play 50 percent better and teamvision 2.0 will fix the ai shortcomings that are generally bugging most people.
@wakey 1982-To state konami are lazy is a bit unfair its clear a huge amount of work has gone into pes2009.
Pes2009 is a great technical achievement on all levels and the ball physics and kinectics alone warrant more accalades.Yes the collision detection could be better as well as ai,player animation and movement but its still vastly superior to fifa09 and has a real life look and feel to it that ea can only dream of and i can guaranntee any faults we can see with pes2009 konami are more then aware of.
Everyone forking out their hard earned cashed (£40+/-) on the new pes dont want to hear excuses about why the new release only has minor changes to the gameplay. If so sell it for (£20-)
we just want to enjoying playing a footie match sim and seeing plenty of things that make us say “wow thats so realistic” like we did when we 1st started playing pes.
I can only hope
I notice a lot of people are saying they’re disappointed with the graphics & presentation of PES but for me this is the main part of the game that Konami have improved in recent years.
I think the fact they’ve been concentrating on better graphics and a Champs lg mode has led to them neglecting the gameplay slightly.
PES 4,5 & 6 had pretty poor graphics but the game engine beneath the looks was awesome! That is why everyone loved PES.
Hopefully with PES 2010 they can get everything right but I’m far more concerned with the player, ball and passing physics then I am with the graphics!!
Though i do agree with dopecoils (comment 15) I have had some tough intense matches playing pro with a tactical feel which i dont think fifa quite delivers.
But they are getting mighty close so i konami can afford to take their foots off the pedal. any improvment that can be thought of should be implemented asap.
very true blade. Those pysics should be focused on and improved to make the game as realistic as possible
I went out and spent the best part of £500.00 on a new PS3 when it first came out. I think it is only fair that over 2 years later for me to expect Konami to be releasing a game that represents the machines apparent supremacy over the PS2. Other titles have managed it, as far as I can see there is no excuse this time.
Also, will you let us know what questions you will put to Konami as I am interested to now if EVEN ONE of your/ our suggestions is taken on board? I think its only fair although I am guessing you will not make us privy to this info…
On another note, and this may not be a popular view but I think that this site now “in bed” with Konami is not a good thing at all… For the sake of believing you have an influence and for the sake of a few free copies of the game and a free promotional card board cut out of Messi you have sold your souls… Konami now control you………..
Dont get me wrong, I appreciate and like this site… I just think you guys have made a bad move!!!!
Great blog Eboue!
I agree much more with what you are saying than with those pessimists who expect everything to be perfect. Maybe it will be, but to say that you will not buy the game ever again if it’s not perfect is ludicrous. For me, PES 09 was a step in the right direction, and 2010 sounds like another one.
My only fear for 2010 is that Konami will make some bad and/or strange decisions due to the comments being made by some of the unpleasables.
@ comment 15: Dopecoil. Fair enough comment but IMO Konami had become lazy and the fact FIFA 09 surpassed PES 09 IMO they have infact now decided to pull their finger out as regards listening to the real fans. I cant for one minute accept that PES 2009 has better look and feel to FIFA as apart from the ball being a little floaty when shooting and crossing, the animation and responsivness is far superior. For once FIFA have made 09 very responsive and for most the time the players are doing as you want them to. All the FIFAs before that have been terrible and PES has been the far better game but this year Konami tried to get away with a terrible update. PES wins in the graphical dept but loses on almost every single other dept to FIFA, dont even get me started on stats and presentation!
Just to let you know im a PES fan first and formost but Konami screwed us over big time with 09 IMO.

I agree mate i am hoping things are good like everyone and not to knock what certain people like but does it really matter if there shirts are tucked in or blowing in the wind.
We want a game that plays good and we can have fun with and actually play online with decent keepers ect.
while boots are nice to some and if there long hair blows in the wind i couldnt really give a toss! i just hope konami stick to certain things and dont try to get too many peoples ideas implemented
Sorry to offend anyone we all like different things but come on guys
: ) cheers dougie
Im kind of nervous about how this game will be. I would say this game can change my life for 1 year. I have played PES since 1 and bought all pes games and winning eleven games and always had soo fun plying against friends. But the past 2 years its has been so crappy gameplay, i think 2009 was the worst. 2008 had some problems but the gameplay was more like the old style than 2009. If 2010 is exactly like pes 5 or 6 was just with a little better graphics i will be very happy. They should go back to those games and just make some graphics and teams updates. Cause it feels like they have ruined all good things with pes, and i doubt they can make a very good pes if they keep on this line.
My first post ever: I’ve been following this blog for quite awhile now, but i’ve finally got to posting something. 1st of all, big thanks to dougie and Dan for providing the enviroment. No matter how many PES 2009-haters, I still can’t get enough of the ‘Become a Legend’ mode. I have logged in more minutes for this than even my masters league. And so my question for Konami:
- Are they going to provide any managerial responsibility in the ‘Become a Legend’ for pes2010???
At least the user should have a say in formations, and team-member selections for games. Maybe transfers (but that might be pushing it).
Stay Pro-Evo hommies!
comment 23-Steve67
Come on bud please stating fifa09 is better then pes2009 is ludicrous,i do respect your opinion but bare in mind im a fair and objective games player and base my judgements on 28 years of watching football and 16 years of playing football in a digitised form on consoles since the SNES.
Personally and after 8 months of playing pes2009 i dont thinks it does a great deal wrong the positives certainly outweigh the negatives.I still played PES on the ps2 when pes2008 came out but since the launch of pes2009 ive not looked back feeling its a far superior experience even compared to fifa09.
What you have to realise is what seems a slow clumbersome game at first with practise and time becomes lightning quick, ultra responsive and a joy to play you just have to make the transition to a more measured subtle game.
Like i have stated on previous messages pes2009 is certainly not perfect but its not far off and the promised improvements for pes2010 tick all the missing boxes of pes2009 for me.
People can whine on about the fact that centre backs are drawn towards there fullback when he is covering but if you click the cursor onto the centre back you can make sure he stays stationery to cover and then click back to your fullback,pes2009 is not about having quick hands its about having a quick mind you have to be one step ahead all the time.
@dopecoil – I completely agree with you that the overall fluidity of pes09 is far superior to fifa09 and is therfore more true to the game. The lazy point I was trying to make was how half arsed they seemed to use the Champions League license (which was a big coup for pes if you ask me) and how minimal the graphical update was from 08. If you think back only a few years ago, pes was held in such high regards by true football fans and players alike, there was no argument – pes was football gaming heaven. To compare fifa to it back then was almost laughable, but now it has closed the gap considerably with many stating it to be superior. That to me says pes has rested on its laurels while fifa has upped the auntie and made considerable improvments where pes has not.
I just feel pes09 should of been the starting block for the next gen franchise and we should of already had this possibly great (pes10) version this year, dont you all?
Hats of to konami though, few other developers would take on so much fan input and do their very best to make it materialize in the game, Seabass and the crew really understand that ‘we’ make the pes franchise great! And this is what fills me with great hope for pes10!
Or that Konami will play it safe again due to the easy-to-please customers who don’t want Real Progress.
I find it quite funny and arrogant how Dave O mentions “unpleasables”. It’s just funny, considering how outdated 08 and 09 are for Next Gen Consoles. Who would be ‘pleased’ with such outdated games?
Anyways… Konami are clearly listening now, how much this will influence PES10 we don’t know. But it is certainly a step in the right directions for 2011.
@29.amateur-Outdated compared to what?something can only be outdated when it has been superseeded by something else that is better. If theres a better football game on the market please tell me.
I for one am not easy to please it has taken me years to really warm to the PES series as i always felt konamis perfect striker3 on the ps2 was the best football game ever made as it gave you total control.
But konami have made huge steps in pes2008 and pes2009 to offer the user the ability to do more then just use the short pass which was always the case on the ps2 plus is attempting to implement a more manual long pass, short pass, dribbling system in small steps rather then alienating the core fan which can only be a good thing.Add to that the quantum shift in the ai from the ps2 days and we now have a game in pes2009 which is more akin to the dizzy heights that MAJORA where hitting in the early part of this decade.
“Arrogant”…?
I’ll admit to be an insulting and close minded jerk, but arrogant!!!???
Ha ha.
No, that’s probably fair actually, but if the shoe fits…
I have just sat and read the above comments with a real sense of deja vu. Yet I know I will buy the game on release day 1 and play it all year! I’ve got some cracking mates on xbox live and 2 vs 2 is where the fun is at…I’ll keep saying it, if online is improved and given better menus and options with a bit more depth to gameplay I will be delighted.
Anyone on xbox live who wants to play 2 vs 2 on PES 2010? If so given the impending integration of Twitter to xbox live I have created a Twitter identity to organise tournaments etc come follow me @ https://twitter.com/proevoxbox360
THEY BETTER HAVE TROPHIES THIS TIME ROUND!!!
@ post 30 Dopecoil: the main reason i dont like PES 09 is because Konami in their wise wisdom have taken away the near total control we had in PES 4/5/6 (ie auto tackling). You say you liked the total control in perfect Striker 3 but PES 2009 takes some of this away so why do you feel its such a step forward? I for one feel that the lack of total control completely takes away the great feeling the old PS2 versions gave when scoring. It gave you the feeling that you did it all yourself and now it feels very AI aided. Sorry if this sounds like knit picking.
Great column Dougie, you addressed a lot of the issues that will more than likely be the general topic of conversation on this site in the run up to Pes2010.
What I’m hoping for this year is a game in a similar mould to Pes1. I’m not expecting miracles, they haven’t had enough time; however, what I will be looking for is a solid foundation that can be built upon in the years following Pes2010 release.
Pes1 was the ‘ground zero’ that allowed its successors to build upon the immutable structure that it laid in place – so solid gameplay is a must.
The fact that Konami have hired 200 extra staff and have FINALLY started listening to their fans shows that they are serious about getting Pes back on track.
I remember when Pes1 first came out, it scored 9/10 in most magazines – in some I think it got a 10 – and it achieved this not by being flash or having all the licenses and the right kits or good commentating; it was a instant hit because its core game engine was solid and it played the most realistic game of football ever played in any video game – unfortunatley, since then, magazine reviews are no longer worth the paper they are printed on.
People like to play a game where they don’t feel cheated; where they feel the game is fair. We love goal variety and the chance to string together many different combinations of passing moves. Fans love accurate players stats and playing style likesness, so when Ronaldo takes a freekick or Messi goes on a mesmerising run it feels and looks like a digital replica of the real thing.
The most important part of the origanal Pes series gameplay was that like Streetfighter on the Super nintendo it accurately represented gamer skill – If you sucked and hadn’t practiced then you lost. There was no unoriginal goal scoring, where players were always looking for the same angle or the same spot that they new they could score from and get a cheap goal. This doesn’t happen in real football and any game that allows repetitive routes of success loses its appeal and depth immediately.
I think most will agree that Pes2008&9 haven’t had that same solid, realistic looking, addictive and diverse structure that blessed the PS2 series. This is mainly because of cheap goals, poor goalkeepers, buggy gameplay, a lack of new game features, the removal of good old game features, poor online play, less dynamic passing, poor control pad to on-screen action synchronisation, bad tackling, poor decisions made by referees, terrible player positioning, a strange new camera perspective that makes gameplay look squashed, substandard sound effects and overall average gameplay – couple this with poor menu systems and presentation and you have a game that realstically should be scoring 6 maybe 7 out of 10.
So forget Return of the king, what I wan’t to see is Return of the Structure; if Konami get that right then Pes’s return to greatness won’t be a maybe it’ll be a certainty.
@34 Steve67
Your spot on mate, Pes2009 does feel like Pes on stabilisers. Pes PS2 gave you the freedom to create a multitude of different passing moves and goals scored. Generaly in life people want more freedom – not less!
if it aint my old friend Simon MacD.. hey buddy ..I wrote pes off a while back and just come here to laugh and talk about fifa.. like 200 extra people can make Seabass’s shocking next-gen game better than fifa 10.. oh yes fifa is the best
it must be good what konami is bringing for pes2010 because by this time we had more than a short video, in the past years,
hopefully they dont let us down, im lookin forward to playing hours and hours of pes
PES is the best football game on PC !

OOOOOOONNNNNNNNNLLLLLIIIIINEEEEEE or NOTHING!!!!!
On PC
Overall the best soccer game is FIFA 09
@34-steve67
I dont even like the auto tackling or auto defenders putting there foot through the ball so dont think your being picky.
What i was trying to say badly was i can see in pes2009 is a more free flowing manual game of football that is still shackled by a fear of the developer to give us the user the level of control on a 360 degree plain that we all crave when the game engine is clearly designed and made for this but because PES has always been more automated and assisted with a invisible grid and has restrictive 8-axis movement that limits passing in all its facets the long pass, short pass and through ball to 90-45 degree angles that are flat konami are scared about giving us the user this level of manaul control and freedom simply because and im generalising most pes players only use the short pass and run at goal and would find it to much of a extreme change that requires more skill as it did back on the n64.Konami back in the early playstation era switched to having the ball as a free entity more like fifa which blew us all away in pes1 but stripped away the 360 degree manual dribbling, long pass, through pass, shooting mechanic that also allowed curl or spin to be added to the ball after hitting in the iss, perfect striker series as the shift was to a more dribbling and short pass focused game that looked more realistic but automated crossing and long passing to simple button presses l1+circle rather then allowing the user to curl and place the ball to forwards or teamates with the left thumbstick or d-pad themselves with even the long pass being innacurate and flat as well as the through ball.
With pes2009 i can see iss and perfect striker the problem is its still holding onto all the flaws and limitations of the earlier PES only giving us what we have games.Konami need to bring back manual curling of the ball and full 360 degree movement of players as well as 360 degree manual longpassing, throughpassing and shooting off the left thumbstick or d-pad then pes2010 will be perfect.

in the pc pes is the best soccer game u cant compare them fifa on pc=crap
just to elaborate on my own comment 43.
I know ISS and perfect striker both on the n64 and ps1-2 up until 2001 are very dated visually now and certainly seem crude by todays standards of graphics but what you have to realise is interms of giving the user a logical button interface and deep 360 degree player control that was not overly complicated konami actually produced a series of football games that even they now need to replicate on the next gen consoles even though elements although in a more watered down form have always been part of PES since its first iteration all those years ago.
When we play pes and send those curling centered crosses into the box using the l1+circle buttons dont we want to do that ourselfs the cpu is certainly doing it as is the game engine without a problem so why cant we as the user direct the ball in are selves with the left thumbstick and long pass button adding curl ourselves you could in ISS and perfect striker plus also use the shot button for harder crosses and change the elevation.
When we press the one-two button why is the control of the runner taken away until the runner recieves the ball, how about after releasing the one-two buttons we maintain control of the runner allowing us to better position him or even have the player who is recieving the ball delaying or holding the ball if we press and hold down the relevant buttons ie through pass, long pass until we want the pass to the runner you could do in ISS and perfect striker.
When we release a through pass why does it only move in strait 45 and 90 angles why cant we curl it to players after hitting or manually direct on a 360 degree plain using the left thumbstick and through pass button you could in ISS and perfect striker.
When we a long pass why like the through ball does the ball only travel in 90 and 45 degree angles that are flat and why is it assisted, why cant we have 360 degree direction off the left thumbstick that we can place and curl plus a more subtle and refined level of power that does not make us overhit the ball or underhit the ball you could do this on ISS and perfect striker.
Why cant we move are players on a 360 degree plain by just moving the left thumbstick and then move how we do in pes in 8-axis by using gentle pushes of the dash button and left thumbstick angled directions pushes we could do this in ISS and perfect striker.
The above is just a few points i havent even mentioned tricks and the solid defences attributes of ISS and perfect striker.
My point is pes needs to go back to its true simulation roots and stop robbing us of doing the enjoyable stuff then am i sure of this 100% we will all very very happy.
I have to disagree about the depth of the 360 movement in ISS. In my opinion, it was an unrealistic interpretation of the game in that you could move anywhere and the ball would basically move with you. It was more like ice-hockey than footy.
The 360 degree movement now being implemented by EA (and hopefully Konami), is a different kettle of fish entirely because the movement of the ball is modelled independantly from the movement of the player. It’s never been done before as far as I know (and according to EA’s official press release this is the first time it has been done).
Also, let’s not belittle what WE/PES has been over the last 8 years or so since it has gone to 8 way control. I woudln’t take those years back and trade them in for more ISS (well, maybe 2007 and 2008), but I do agree that ISS had some things that PES still doesn’t, although looking back I think that some of the things like after-touch (bend) on the ball were too extreme in those old games.
R.i.p. Michael jackson. Respect.
There are some great points here, one being that Konami has increased its development team to give us a better game than last year.
To me however, that is just bull. I strongly believe that Seabass has no intention of improving the game by much. I can guarantee that the online will not be fixed by fall. I can guarantee that graphics and AI will be tweaked minimally. And I last of all I can guarantee that this title of PES 2010 will sell more copies than last year. Look at the hype. And it is sure working has a lot of folks are already eager to buy another copy hoping for great improvements. Konami + Seabass = Epic Fail
That is the basic strategy that Konami has taken in recent years. Hype the project and make as much dough as you can. Forget about fans, they will alway complain no matter how good or bad the game is.
I will not buy PES again until I hear that it is definitely the best soccer game on the market. Till then, I will suffer with PES 2009.
Does anyone realize that Fifa 2010 will be out also?
Please ask them why won’t they include Chelsea FC officially in their english team line-up why are just including Man United & Liverpool
@ Dopecoil. I sincerely hope Konami pull it off this year but i just feel they have too much to do as FIFA have only to get its gameplay right and they will blow konami away. I know FIFA gameplay is not perfect but is gives us far and away more freedom than PES 2009 does and IMO they only have to address the floaty ball problem and they will have one great game. I have always been a PES fan firstly but i dont really care who makes the best game as long as we get the great game we all deserve.
@ Steve67
I agree with both you and Dopecoil. PES has taken 5 steps backwards.
Konami now faces an uphill task of making an enjoyable game for its fans. But it seems that the team of developers that created and enhanced the title to what it was have been either fired or muzzled by Seabass.
As Steve37 stated Fifa has improved a lot, and I am not a Fifa fan. This is what makes me furious. Fifa was miles behind PES. Now Fifa has all the graphics, tricks, licenses and hype that PES should have had a loooong time ago.
How can a footie simulation lack juggling skills?
I want to be able to juggle the ball.
How can Fifa play so smoothly online and PES cannot?
How the hell did EA get licensing over the greatest soccer simulation on any console?
The answer to all these question i am afraid is Seabass.
Fire Seabass… then we will be up an running again in no time.
New pes 2010 pics at http://www.winningelevenblog.com check them out guys!!
It’s plain and clear to see that the strip steven mr. Liverpool gerrard is wearing haves alot more texture detail than that of its predecessor pes 2009. Also in the same pic you can get a sense that konami haves been working on the lighting affects and shadows etc.
@46 dave o
Your missing my point dave,im not saying lets just remake ISS or perfect striker undoubtedly football games are better visually and player dribbling is so much more advanced now thats why i prefer to play pes2009.
My point is the through ball, long pass and player control and smoothness is still not as refined and as responsive as it should and could be,pes2009 still plays and feels to rigid and heavy and passing and movement is limited to 45-90 angles.I appreciate the aftertouch in ISS and perfect striker was exaggerated but being able even to put a small amount of curl or spin on the ball after hitting would make a difference because when you cross from extreme angles from the wings using l1 and circle is the ball not curling in a extreme way.Why when a player has good swerve stats can we the user not apply curl to the ball it would certainly make pes less one dimensional.
Greater player control and smoothness and tight refined 360 degree manual through passes, long passes, shooting with curl plus a more sophisticated one-two system would take pes into a different dimension.
Why should a football game not be joy to play rather then a labour of love?i really enjoy pes but am not blind to the fact that it could be so much better, come on dave where still playing a game that has not improved that greatly in 10 years.
@46 dave o
Its all well and good making a game stunning to look at and having a sublime short pass and addictive dribbling qualitys, but when you make the rest of the experience so wooden and flat taking away the users ability to make a greater range of physical input choices on the pitch your left with only one thing a one trick pony, and for me as much as i love pes this is its biggest problem a over reliance on the short pass and a ageing player control system the needs to be overhauled giving the us the user the freedom with crave and greater range of control with are controller physically on the pitch not through menu choices that are applied automatically or simple automated button presses.
i bloody love pes. all pes. its brilliant! i just want to be able to switch clubs in master league and i want eveyone who plays online (i dont) to enjoy it. and lo! there will be happiness all round!
i have been reading a lot of konami press releases and it all seems to be better graphics, lighting, modelling and stratergy choices ie zone pressing, formation changes, front line with even the earlier announced improved player animation and dovetailing more now switched to just a improved dribbling system which konami have been saying for years and the dribbling system is exactly the same year in year out.Its great having this stuff when it actually makes a difference but the games its built on has to be right not crappy through balls and sticky wooden players that feel like there playing in sand.
Where as ea are making big noises about the important stuff like 360 degree player movement and improved player handling and control.
This for me is where konami are going wrong there trying to turn pes into a stratergy management sim making us the user more of a passenger,im starting to worry more as the weeks go on.Surely even konami must see the improvements need to be on the pitch in player control and general contol freedom not in window dressing and letting the cpu take over i dont want a wii style pes on my ps3.The manual cursor setting in pes2009 is bad enough who wants to play a game where the cpu is playing the opposition and we the user are just making small adjustments to a game that could play out just as well without us.
I personally think konami and seabass are losing the plot
Guys, guys, guys!!! It’s still way too early to be putting your head under the pillow and crying!!!!
We haven’t even seen gameplay footage yet, and fro all accounts it sounds like the majority of the news about PES 2010 is still to come…
July 15th’s the day when we can either begin to be pessimistic or optimistic, but I don’t think we should be basing our concerns on what we haven’t heard.
PS – Yes, you can put curl on crosses in PES 09, just press a direction while the power meter is full. The difference is that they have tried to get away from the previously unrealistic games where you could apply curl a few moments after the ball has already left the player’s foot (like in the tTiger Woods golf games). Now, just checking the guide here I’m not sure that you can apply curl to shots, but you definitely can for crosses, corners, and FKs. I agree though that it would be nice if it were a tiny bit more effective.
Its there to a degree dave the curl but like you stated certainly needs to be better…………
always use “TYPE 4 ” long pass option !! its similar to manual pass and so is accurate and very helpful if you get used to :)
only make it for PS3 so it could be better!!!!!
@ dopecoil, post 54.
That’s exactly my point, Dave O is missing the point and usually takes things out of proportion. The PES series is outdated and needs a proper overhaul, like it or not.
Anyways, we will get a good idea by July 15. Hopefully it is a proper Evolution this time.
By the way, @ DD – people are still copying me to this day… it’s quite pathetic that some people don’t have a mind of their own. This does not happens in Dan Bolas Column anymore -but- consistently happens in Your Column.
I am slightly offended by the fact that You banned all the “DD Out” Posts -but- you don’t bother deleting Post 57. I would appreciate if you could do something about this… Otherwise, what’s the purpose of my E-Mail?
@Baska-comment 61
I to use the type4 long pass option which is better and i know what you mean i just want it to be more refined and be able to curl it more when im at a extreme angle on the wings, its diffently one of the positive improvements in pes09.
i play PES since 1,pes 6 was the best for me on ps2and gameplay of pes 2009 is realy good, but konami please make online to work perfect.if online still be unplayable i will never buy pes again.
@ 14. Dopecoil, quote:
“Let us not forget how long most next gen games take to develope now between 2-4 years and even then are rarely perfect. Its easy to be critical but
konami are doing a good job considering what there limited developemment time is every year.We all bellyache but still play pes all year long dispite its minor flaws because there is nothing else like it.I believe once the smoothness of the animation is adressed we will all be happy as the game will look and play 50 percent better and teamvision 2.0 will fix the ai shortcomings that are generally bugging most people.”
My Answer: This is no excuse. Konami do not ONLY have a year to make improvements to the game. They can spend years, if they wanted, improving something such as the graphics. What they can then do is plan to release the major graphical / gameplay overhall for next year or the year after.
When EA Sports used to trail far behind Konami, they set out on a long term plan to create a new engine from scratch. It took years to create.
But Pro Evolution has not seen any 3-year-developed new engine. Only annual incremental improvements.Don’t get me wrong, I still prefer Pro.
Pro Evolution’s (offline) gameplay is more grown up than the kiddy direction that Fifa has taken. Yes, Fifa is more closer to a sim in recent years. But Fifa is aimed at fantasy football, such as random players like Paul Scholes doing fancy tricks that he never does in real life. Pro Evolution at least tries to be more respectful and authentic to real football.
For me, the main negatives with Pro Evolution is the 4 / 8 directions of movement that players have; The cartoonish graphics; And online play being too arcadish and fixed on ‘beginner’ difficulty level.
One thing thats confused me with PES is how come they got the champions league rights and now the europa league rights but you still have to play as teams with fake names, unrealsitic team stadiums (No Old Trafford etc…) and so forth. kinda makes a mockery of it doesn’t it?
pes 2010 playtest have got many excited… its interesting how people who have played Fifa 10 with its special 360 control are more impressed with what pes 2010 has to offer at the moment.. this is the game that Seabass has been wanting to give the fans but now with the power of the MGS team A LEGEND IS
REBORN
Very early days for both EA and Konami .. But when Konami’s Representatives said their not at all concerned about fifa’s 360 control (it seemed strange)..and now with the recent play test’s its quite clear that the Old programmer Seabass still has quite a few tricks he’s been saving up his sleave.. It’s taken two below par tries but with a greater work force and better fan relation, it now seems Pes have now leveled the playing ground.. :new info in progress
@65 pro 1
I couldnt agree more but what i was saying was theres no point scrapping what konami has built with pes2008-2009 because fundamentally its right it just needs to be super smoothed out and every little gameplay element tightened up.
For me i still think pes09 has the better gameplay in the series it just needs to be a bit more free and less wooden with a greater range of angles on the longpass, short pass, through ball and shooting that we the user can add spin or curl to like real footballers do in a realistic way,not exaggerated and arcade like. The through balls still to sticky and player movement off the ball still could be better as at times there a real reluctance to attack the ball especialy on crosses and through balls.
My biggest complaint is the 8-axis movement its to sticky and flat and limits the hitting angles you have in the game plus movement is not as smooth and responsive as it should be compared to games like ISS and perfect striker.
Im not saying the answer is in 360 movement because i think konami could do a better job with the dribbling system and player movement we already have.
When where playing pes2009 we are just playing a graphically enhanced ISS and perfect striker the problem is where playing it with all the old PES restrictions ie flat 45-90 degree angles on all the different passes and shooting
and a innability to add a much needed degree of curl or spin on the ball plus the one-two system could be so much better as could the overly sensitive power bar.
When i talk about perfect striker especially perfect striker 3 on the ps2 im talking abnout a game that if you even play now against pes09 is still light years ahead interms of smooth player animation, tight control and full 360 degree passing and shooting with the best one-two system ever devised, with the long pass that you can place to anyone on the pitch with curl and crossing is sublime as well as the through ball.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12KdxIq5o0o Please have a look at this video and my others demonstrating perfect striker 3 on the ps2,contary to the earlier ISS and perfect striker games on the n64 the ps2 version had the ball as more of a free entity.
pes2009 gives you less control over players than any other of the games in the series. the cpu’s AI is also slow and retarded in pes2009. it doesn’t feel like i’m playing thats why i can’t pick up my copy of pes2009 anymore, because when i’m playin it, it still feels like i’m not playing, so i might aswell not play it. the game feels boring and has lost it’s exciting edge. no longer does a tense match that can swing either way feel like it hinders on you making a mistake, because before you get a chance the retarded AI makes a mistakes for you. whether it be players running out of position, goalkeeper flapping about, cpu tackling for you, giving your pass to the opposition, not supporting play e.t.c., the list goes on. the players don’t feel like they respond to you the player. the cpu has to much influence in the gameplay in pes2009. i want more manual control in pes2010, so i’m only punished by my mistakes and not the AI’s.
@62 – I didn’t actually proportionalize anything with my comments. I only pointed out some counterpoints which I think definitely needed to be said in order to bring things into perspective based on the facts, including the fact that July 15th is the day we can start being pessimistic if we so wish, and that 360 movement would be great, but 8 way control has brought us some of the best football gaming experiences we’ve ever had. Are those comments out of proportion?
Adding “curl or spin on the ball” will not add much to the gameplay experience. What the game needs is to move on from 8 Directional Gameplay.
The Left Analogue will provide some much needed depth to the game, for obvious reasons. Although (of course) someone could come up with a New Control, with a 16 Directional D-Pad… although that would be extremely uncomfortable, a 16 directional d-pad?
Plus it needs a serious overhaul in off-the-ball play. The old “Pass and Tap R2″ is way too easy and barely requires any level of skill. We need a lot more control over the off-the-ball movement, both when defending and attacking.
And more Stats and Special Abilities… we need more differences between great players with different styles and approaches.
The other thing that would be a great addition, would be to have an in-game Confidence Level gauge, and another one for Stamina.
It would be similar to having the current “Arrows” system continuously changing in-game. Therefore Dictating the Momentum Shifts throughout the game.
This would/should come hand-in-hand with New Stats such as Attacking Work Rate and Defensive Work Rate, and Stats for Tactical Awareness. How ‘much’ a player moves off-the-ball and How ‘well’ a player moves off-the-ball are things that we should not control.
I believe we should have the power of dictating this sort of thing, the tactical play, similar to the Wii version… But how well the player executes your directions should be determined by Stats. This would force us into having a realistic balance in our Team.
The Work rate and Awareness Stats would be directly linked to the whole Confidence Level Concept.
So that if you have someone like Ronaldinho playing in a physically demanding role, because of his poor Work-Rate this would have a negative effect on Ronaldinho’s Confidence Level.
So the Confidence Level Gauge will display the confidence level of each individual, the sum of each individual will give us the Team’s overall confidence level -and- the Team with better Confidence will have the momentum in their favor.
The momentum would in-turn affect Awareness and Work Rate amongst many other things… so that a Team with better Confidence will “click” better.
Confidence is a very important factor in Football. It’s one of those things that no one has managed to depict realistically.
It is also important to mention that we already have “momentum shifts” in PES, and that those momentum shifts affect both work rate and awareness amongst some other things.
But the problem is that we have no say in how the momentum changes throughout the game, the momentum is entirely Dictated by the COM… and there are no Stats for Awareness and Work Rate.
This is my main problem with PES09. It is extremely easy and it is also excessively Assisted by the COM. The COM dictates the momentum for you, the COM even decides if the ball goes in or not, quite consistently.
The game is based on the 8-directional d-pad, which means that whenever a passing or shooting angle is too intricate for the d-pad to handle; Luck will overshadow Skill.
I don’t think a feature for adding “curl or spin on the ball” will add much to the experience. There are far more important things that need to be improved.
The 1st things that come to my mind are: moving on from the 8 Directional D-Pad, new off-the-ball features similar to the Wii version, new Stats and Special Abilities to better define Player Likenesses, a new concept for both Momentum and Confidence, and much improved Animations.
But yeah, July 15th will give us a good idea of what to expect. Hopefully some of these long-standing issues will be fixed.
@ 72
Dave O – “My only fear for 2010 is that Konami will make some bad and/or strange decisions due to the comments being made by some of the unpleasables”
That’s taking things out of proportion. Your “only fear” is that Konami may want to finally please the fans who want significant changes.
You insist in saying that the d-pad is very important, that if Konami move on from the d-pad they could alienate many fans, that New Stats are not really necessary, etc, etc.
It’s just very defensive and Conservative. You also mentioned something about the “unpleasables”. And you mention all this things without considering the FACT the game has been based on the d-pad for many years now.
So, don’t you think that the “unpleasables” have a perfectly good point?? Perhaps it is time to please the “unpleasables” and alienate Conservative Fan-Boys.
That’s all I’m saying.
Amateur – I think enough has been said between you and I to clarify the fact that neither of us has a lick of common groud or respect for one another. Obviously what you are saying makes no sense to me, especially in light of my experiences with having read your posts over the last year and how out of touch they seem in relation to my experiences with PES 09, which, IMO, is far from being as terrible as you make it sound.
Understand – I want tons of improvements for 2010, including better animations, 360 control, new stats (not most of the ones you’ve suggested btw), and better AI, online, etc, etc. I want a revolution!
The difference is that I don’t NEED it. Unless Konami make some really bad decisions, I fully expect that PES 2010 will be good enough for me, but I can’t possibly imagine that it will be good enough for a lot of the people who I hear that can obviously never be pleased by anything so long as it’s not 110% perfect.
Also – Conservative is a word I would never use to describe myself. The sad fact is that I really do have a lot of new ideas about PES and the future of what it could be, but I waste more time arguing with people who’s views seem out to lunch than I do with trying to put ideas of my own forward.
Case-in-point: Saying that there is something wrong with my suggestion that Konami shouldn’t get rid of the D pad… All I’m saying is that A.) It doesn’t hurt to leave both in, and B.) It would alienate fans who are so used to it if they got rid of it. Offer both options! Why is that a problem???!?! If you think this is Fan-boy conservativism, then you’re totally reading things into what I’m saying that aren’t there. I’m not presenting some sort of philosophy, just stating a marketting fact for those who seem to want to ignore the fact that that PES is well known to be played by a great many people on the D-PAD. That’s not even an opinion, since it is such a well esablished fact that Microsoft even made a special 16 way D Pad controller with PES in mind. And again, it’s simply not a black or white issue. They can have both!!!!
n
Don’t worry Dave O i’m just a bit insecure and have a deep desire to be the soul inspiration behind PES and for PES to be exactly like Fifa..
@ Dave O
They can have both. Yes, even though a 16 directional d-pad sounds like an extremely uncomfortable control.
Having found out that the Left Analogue is much better (in my opinion) this isn’t an issue for me. What I don’t want is for the game to be limited to the crappy 8 directional d-pad. That’s something I don’t want to see in 2010.
As for PES 2009. Nobody expected a perfect game, PES5 was far from perfect, PES6 was also far from perfect… unbelievable PS2 games, but far from perfect. PES09 was just a step-back from PES5 and this is why so many fans are disappointed with the game.
To be honest, I find you kinda squarish if you know what I mean. If you have all those great ideas, please do share them. Nobody is holding you back.
Just like nobody restrained you from speaking your mind and Labeling disappointed fans as “unpleasables who want a 110% perfect game”. Talk about keeping things in proportion…
PES 2009 is disappointing for the simple fact a “newbie” can take Cristiano Ronaldo and then zig-zag the length of the pitch. This was not very easy to do in PES5. So why hasn’t the game improved after PES5?? Why have the Animations gone so Robotic?? What is with this lack of innovation?
Whatever your response or opinion is Dave O, I don’t really care about it, because I’m not very fond of your opinion and knowledge.
From what I can read, you talk about wanting a “revolution” and having ideas of your own -but- so far, all I’ve read is You dismissing perfectly good points and stating The Obvious.
So if you have ideas of your own, please do share them with the rest of the community. Although apparently You prefer to waste Your time arguing with people whose opinions you do not respect nor understand.
At least I have the decency of giving my Opinion on the matter. Dave O you have only disrespected me, and you have given nothing back in return… no ideas, no knowledge, no insight, nothing!! just The Obvious.
So whatever you say… I don’t care, I have zero interest in arguing with someone who clearly lacks common sense amongst other things.
But I’m sure you can contribute something more productive to this community if you just stop stating the obvious all the time, and just gave your opinion without the “I know better than you” tone you always use.
Take Constructive Criticism for what it is. Cheers!!
Thank goodness we have Fifa as an alternative. PES messes up , Will just go for Fifa I’m sure they will improve judging by last years
@73-amatuear
I think you make a very intelligent point about the levels of control we have over players off the ball and think a lot of your ideas are on the money. It also sounds alot like what konami have currently implemented into pes2010 which can only be a good thing.
I also agree regarding your comments about the left analog thumbstick which i agree gives you a far greater degree of control and is maybe something konami should be thinking about making as the primary means of control.
As for earlier pes games on the ps2 i thnk a lot of people view these games with rose tinted glasses, yes the ai didnt make decisions for you but the ps2 versions where riddled with gameplay flaws ie sticky players that pulled up,a non-existent through ball, awful defending attributes, awful set-pieces,which just limited you to the short pass and running at goal or 30 yard smashes.
@78-dave o
I also think you make lots of valid points also and agree that i wouldnt be such a bad thing if pes2010 was just a smoothed out and slightly overhauled version of pes2009 as pes2009 for me is still a great game despite some glaring ai flaws.
If where honest and objective pes2009 is still superior if you actually give it some time to the older versions on the ps2 even with the automatic ai decisions that are made and is certainly a more rounded game.
no doubt in my mind though pes2010 does need to be more of a step forward, konami have been peddling the same dribbling system and game for 10 years now and we all need a fresh challenge……..
@73-amatuear
Adding “curl or spin on the ball” will not add much to the gameplay experience. What the game needs is to move on from 8 Directional Gameplay.
When i talk about curl or spin i dont mean in a tiger woods golf kind of way because that is just tacky.I liked the way it was implemented in iss or perfect striker where you could change the elevation or height(mid, low, high) on crosses, shots, long passes by pulling back or forwards on the left stick or d-pad adding a small amount of backspin or sidespin on the ball via the left thumbstick or d-pad also.It did not take anything away from the game infact it made it deeper and gave the game another layer being able to hit long balls in front of forwards adding spin to slow the power of the long pass or curl to whipped placed manual long passes from the wings rather then having to be parallel to the box or have to hit the l1 and the circle button like we do in PES.
As for the 8 way directional control its got to go or be seriously adressed because this is the reason PES has stayed so stagnent for ten years.Having a dribbling system and player control system that is built around a 8 way d-pad which suits 2d games is limiting the angles we have in pes to 45 and 90 degrees which in the year 2009 with the advances in graphics technology destroys the sense of realism because the players look like there skating on the pitch with sharp strait flat movements which still arent that smooth or pleasurable to control..
What are you guys on about you can produce alot of curl on shots as well as crosses quite easily in PES 2009
Obviously I seem to have come to accept that it is my duty to put things in perspective. If I ever get a chance, though, I’d love to put my thoughts on the future of the series in one place, though it will be in a forum thread as opposed to hijacking DD’s blog as we are doing right now.
I could go on about how ridiculous your arguments are, but you make it clear with your own posts better than I ever could myself. Moreover, I honestly have better things to do with my time than trying to smack common sense into a brick wall.
@ DaveO… that last statement was quite true Amateur hoards all the pes boards with his ramblings so stay mature and let old yeller be ..
@ dopecoil
I think is best that Konami moves on from the 8 directional d-pad. I think the Left Analogue is better than any d-pad will ever be -but- that said, we can have both, the left analogue and a 16-directional d-pad.
As for adding “curl or spin on the ball”. I’m not saying it’s not a good idea… I’m just saying that IMO it shouldn’t be a priority. That said, I do agree that the game needs new features for shooting and passing.
As for PES09… it can be an enjoyable game, but I just cannot get around the fact that it is so easy to take Cristiano Ronaldo and just run your way into goal. I find this is harder to do in PES5 because PES5 haves a proper balance between defenders and attackers.
Oh and @ Dave O – Whatever, I really couldn’t care less. This is a PES Forum and I’m clearly talking about PES.
