PES2010 Play Test Special

PES2010 The playtest.

Now that the NDA agreement date has been respected, I am very pleased to tell you that I was invited by Konami to a behind closed doors look at PES2010.  I was not able to talk about the fact that I had been to see the game.  Rather than tell people that I had been and not say anything about the event would have been extra frustrating for you guys (I know – I’ve been there!).
So to begin with here’s a small library of PES2010 screenshot, so let’s get them out of the way now.

This was the first time a representative from PESGaming.com has been invited to such an event, and it was an honour for me to attend.  As I become more savvy with how these events are carried out, our relationship with Konami will improve, and hopefully we will get more reps for future events going more regularly.

The actual event itself was held in a private room in a hotel in the West End.  There were several test rigs set up all on Software Development Kits, so we were seeing the generic product prior to them cutting code for specific machines.  Having signed the NDA eagerly, I was immediately seated at a rig and the play testing began.

The game itself has a new front end which shows the game modes, of which only the option to play a friendly match was available, as was expected.  The teams enabled were Liverpool and Barcelona.
So I started the game, and the first thing I had to say was “wow” at the look and feel of the game.  Don’t get me wrong, I value substance over style, but you can’t help but marvel at how good the game looks.

First Impressions

I’d like to make it clear that this is the first time I have been to an event of this nature, and so had mixed expectations from Konami.  The scene was set prior to playing the game – I was told that the game was only around 50% complete.  What we were witnessing was more a statement of intent, rather than the finished game.  Having spoken to a few other guys present from other PES fan sites, it was made clear to me that the game will come on leaps and bounds from what we were currently seeing.  The game would almost be unrecognisable from the one that we were playing now.  So this is a very important statement I’d like you guys to note now.

I am a cautious person by nature.  One of my mottos in life is to expect the worst, but hope for the best.  It’s a mechanism to try and keep my emotions in check for everything in life.  So please bear this in mind with what I have to say about PES2010.

So having got over the graphics of the game, I can tell you that the game still has the same camera modes we’re all used to – nothing new to surprise us, which was a little disappointing.  I’ve always wanted a fully customisable camera view where you customise the pitch angle and zoom, but that’s just me.

I’d like to begin by listing some bullet points on what I thought was good and bad about the game, and then talk about them within the context of a game that is still in development – I cannot emphasize this point enough – so please remember this!

This article is all about my own personal impressions of the game, and what I took away from the event.
On this basis, my main focus was to see what issues which are in PES2009 are still present, and what improvements from the list submitted (last year in conjunction with PESGaming regulars) have been implemented. So here goes:

Minus points:

  • Invisible barriers still in place which is very disappointing for throw ins.
  •  8 way control hasn’t been advanced upon.  This will be a major sore point for many gamers.  Will need the player animation ranges to be near perfect to appease fans.
  •  Keepers still pass to the nearest player with short goal kicks.
  •  Keeper actions still very limited.  Keepers should come off their line more, reading danger and running out of their area to cut out dangers when they see them.
  •  Can’t chip a ball ahead of player to cross or volley.
  •  Chipping the keeper is poor.  Can’t chip him when running with the ball.  Attempting to chip the keeper would result in the ball ending up in the keeper’s hands at chest height every time.
  •  No trick stick return. Same crappy random skill moves using left stick.
  •  Not able to perform many special skills when I choose to do them.  They are very random.  The trick stick would remove this major irritation.
  •  Grass texture needs some work.  They look very flat in wide view in particular – they could be improved.

Plus points:

  • Graphics are stunning.
  • Slower game pace gives the game play a more simulation feel.
  • Player animation is much improved.  Still some work to be done, but it’s good to see it taking place.
  • New slider system is brilliant.  It is immediately obvious what strategies are being deployed when you choose them.
  • Putting players out of position results in player stat degradation which is brilliant.  This stops people from playing players out of position.
  • Can’t run the length of the pitch with a single player and beat the whole team.
  • Can’t perform 90 degree turns when dribbling at speed any more.  The player slows down and turns 45 degree which is very good.
  • Ball pace is good.  Perhaps more tweaking is required, but so far so good.
  • Set piece takers do not freeze immediately after playing the ball any more.
  • New revamped penalty system with pressure sensitive shooting is a very welcome improvement.
  • Referees appeared not to be brandishing red cards as regularly as in PES2009.

Improvement Suggestions:

(this is a list of improvements, most of which may be quick fixes which can fit in the timescales left for PES2010 development hopefully)

  • Remove the invisible barriers for throw ins in particular
  • Goalkeeper should use a power bar to throw out.  They should be able to choose whether to throw underarm or overarm.
  • Allow keepers to take goal kicks and play the ball short to any of the defenders at the back, not just the nearest one.  Letting the keepers use a power bar to kick/throw the ball would be brilliant.  Keepers like Reina should be more effective at turning defence in to attack.  This is not possible right now.
  • Remove chants in-game. Use forums to provide downloadable team chants.  This way the dev team can concentrate on capturing crowd atmosphere which is very important.
  • Crosses from wide positions should use player crossing attributes to be more realistic.
At the moment all players pretty much have the same crossing ability.  We should see a visible difference when crossing with good players and bad crossers.
  • Trick stick needs to return.  Why not give players a choice of which mode to play with?  Either allow us to use the classic control method of using the trick stick, or the current implementation of special moves using the left stick.
  • Passing should be power sensitive. A power bar or the length of time the button is pressed should vary the strength of the pass.  This should also apply to shots.  If you can afford to keep the button pressed for longer before getting shut down by defenders, then you should be able to get more powerful shots on goal.
  • 16 way movement must be in place for pes2011. (probably too late to try to implement for PES2010)
  • Downloadable foreign language commentary.  (something FIFA have already implemented) why not allow us to download commentary packs with Japanese commentary, or other Asian languages, or South American languages?
  • If all club teams are region specific, why not allow us to download each other’s leagues?  As a PAL region gamer, why can’t I download the J-League teams, or Brazilian League for my game?
  • Different types of pitches having an effect on your game would be great.
  • Online play – we need more assurances that it has been addressed and will be perfect for launch.  Beta testing of online play would help to ensure that it is working properly.

I don’t know what you guys will be thinking having just read the lists above.  For those of you who are despairing at now knowing that we still have 8 way control, and that FIFA’s 360 control hasn’t been matched for example, I would like to say to hold fire on any frustrations you may be feeling.  This demo of the game served several purposes.  Konami wanted to demonstrate that they are listening to what we want from the game.  They wanted to show that they are putting the game back on the map, hence giving representatives from key PES sites early visibility to gauge our impressions of it.

New stuff

I’d like to discuss several new concepts which have been introduced to PES2010 now, and hopefully shed some light on the motivation behind them.

Firstly the new card system (see the thumbnails above for a refresher)
Basically the old star ratings for players have been revamped for PES2010.  They have now been replaced with cards.  Every player has a number of cards (depending on how good the players are) which may be viewed as RPG style special skills which can be switched on and off as a new tactical system measure.
We had the concept explained to us, but it was still a little confusing to be honest.  My interpretation of it was that the system is in place to allow you to customise how and when a player uses their cards (star abilities) in games.
To give you a full example of a card – Messi has a card for mazy dribbling which you can switch on or off.
This confused the hell out of me, because why on earth would I want to switch off a special skill, especially one as rare as mazy dribbling?  I disabled the card and played with Messi only to find that he was still capable of mazy runs, since he was in my control.  But the system became more clearer to me when other cards were seen.  For example the two cards shown above P12 and P01 show the skills Incisive Run and Overlapping Run respectively.  These are more strategic cards which control off the ball movement.  So switching these on or off will make a tactical difference.  For example if you are Stoke City (no disrespect intended Stoke fans!) who are 1-0 up against Manchester United at Old Trafford, you would want a real back to the walls performance to protect your hard earned lead.  So therefore you would want to curb attacking instincts of players, and have them sit back and fight hard.  By switching off these two cards for example, you wouldn’t have to worry about players suddenly deciding to leave their position to go and attack, leaving the team vulnerable.
When you think of the card system like that, then you appreciate the improved strategic thinking that you can add to your game.

The other two screen shots from the Card and Tactics System again show the level of strategic tinkering you can do with your team to have them play the way you want them to.  It has given us a much larger element of control of how we deploy our teams in matches.  You get an almost limitless number of combinations of tactics and team structures to use and perfect.

The new slider system for teams is also pretty amazing in my opinion.  I tried to set the team formations from one extreme of being very rigid in their formation, with no overlapping or pressing of the ball when not in possession, to the opposite extreme of having a very dynamic team structure, who almost play in a pack (a little like when we first played football as kids in school playgrounds where everyone ran to where the ball was), pressing the play, with overlapping runs, interchanging players and fast breaks.  I have to say I was very impressed with the abilities given to us to control.  It was amazing to see the team behaving according to how I had programmed them to behave.  This means that every team should have their own style of play, with team sliders set to varying degrees, according to their playing style.  This really should be evident, and I can’t wait to test that!

The game in action

Ok so now to talk about the actual gameplay itself.  The pace of the game has been slowed right down from the comedy pace of play from PES2008 and PES2009.  The arcade feel to the game is definitely gone.  It felt good stroking the ball around the pitch with either short or long passes.  I was personally disappointed that there wasn’t a power bar for short passes, which would open up play a bit more, but for what it is, the PES passing system is back to being more akin to PES6, which is a big bonus in my eyes.  I played the game for nearly 4 hours during my time at the session and I have to say that I was more and more impressed with the game as I played.  The ball physics were very good, and shooting felt quite good, though to be honest I didn’t spend too much time taking shots.
I was interested in trying to dribble with the ball using a highly skilled player like Gerrard or Messi, taking the ball from the defence and trying to run straight through to goal, but am happy to say that I was unable to do so.  I’m a pretty good player of the game, so it’s not like I am unable to do that on PES2009.

I attempted to run full pelt with the ball, and to try to turn 90 degrees as you currently can with no loss of pace.  Again I was very pleased to see new animations kick in which made my player turn 45 degrees and to slow down when I tried a 90 degree turn.  As I mentioned earlier, the full player animation set hasn’t been totally incorporated yet, so we can expect player abilities on the ball to improve further yet.  I can’t imagine all of the motion capture material that Messi carried out recently has made the game yet.  Once again I must state that there is scope for improvement with player movement and dribbling – and fingers crossed this is taking place right now.  Players still currently run as they do in PES2009, so they have their backs straight and almost have that comical Scooby Doo feel when he runs on the spot before speeding off.  But that should have a more realistic feel once the game is complete.

Goalkeepers were apparently not completely finished yet either, so I expect key improvements to be made to their abilities.  In their current state they performed quite well for me.  The shot stopping was good, with no obvious ball spillages to the feet of waiting attackers in my play time.  I can also say that for goalkeeping glove fetishists out there – the gloves no longer look like they have been inflated to cartoon like proportions.

The penalty system has been revamped and is pretty fantastic I have to say.  You now have a pressure sensitive shooting mechanism which really makes taking penalties a real hit and miss affair (sorry couldn’t resist the pun there).  You now finally have to spend time practicing penalties to be good at them.  When have you ever had to do that in a game?  Once you suss how to take them, it really does make a difference.

I did see evidence of untucked shirts too – which I know really does it for some guys out there.

The crowds could do with more work.  There are still unusual chants in place for teams, but the sound quality is improved, so they don’t sound as nauseating as they currently do in PES2009.  I am hoping again that they get rid of chants from the game, and concentrate on the crowds following the action as it ebbs and flows.  I think allowing the community to supply chants of their own for teams (with larger capacity than the current system which just loops the chants continuously till you vomit) will be a better compromise and allow us to customise the game to our liking.  This will be possible for PC and PS3 versions, but unfortunately Xbox 360 owners will not have this luxury.  Microsoft do not allow gamers to customise option files at all, and as a result 360 owners are needlessly penalised in this respect – so don’t blame Konami 360 owners.  I have actually bought a PS3 specifically for the editing abilities that are open to the PS3.  A decision which I do not regret.

Once we had played the game sufficiently, Jon Murphy recorded mini-interviews on video where he wanted candid, honest thoughts of what we thought of the game.  He was keen to share our views at this stage with the dev team in Japan to let them see for themselves what we expect from the game.  So I told them how I saw the game, which I will talk about next.

Overall Summary

When I initially played the game, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed with the game engine.  If this build was a statement of intent, then it initially felt to me that we were looking at micro steps forward, rather than steps or leaps forward.

I was looking to see which of the problems we wanted addressed have been fixed, and was very disappointed to see that most of the issues were still present.  I hope that improvement suggestions I have made will be revisited by the team and addressed.  I don’t think that they are particularly hard to fix.
If more resources from the pool available were thrown into fixing these issues right now for PES2010, then it would give a more meaningful statement of intent.

Even with the improvement suggestions addressed in the game, there will still be a fair amount of disappointment that the series hasn’t made more of a forward leap.  With our more powerful gaming systems, people expect a lot more than we’re currently seeing.

FIFA have raised the bar with FIFA ’09, and I fear FIFA ’10 may produce a bigger gulf for PES to overcome.
To be fair, whilst people are raving about having 360 control over players, I think there is potential for players going from the fairly rigid control of 8-way controls to having the total freedom of 360 degree movement as too much control too soon.  Will this impact playability?  I think progressing from 8 way movement to 16 way movement now would have been a smarter move, as we would gain a lot more control of play, and to maintain playability a lot better.  We have to realise that as much as we kick and scream for more and more realism from our football games, a balance has to be struck between control, playability and fun.

Yes I am disappointed we still have 8 way control, but if the control is very tight, like PES6 was, and all the new additions made to the game are successful, then we have one hell of a game on our hands.

I was given verbal assurances that the online system will be perfect this time round.  The PES6 online system will be the basis for online play, and hopefully it delivers.  We have all time and time again made it abundantly clear that the online playability must be problem free this time for PES2010 to have any meaningful credibility.  There are no planned online beta tests as far as I know, so we will have to wait and see how the system works.

We can expect the next play test of the game in a few short weeks time to be an almost unrecognisable improvement, going on what the guys who have been to these events had to say.  This is very encouraging I have to say.  Had this been a 75/80% completed game with a few final tweaks left to make, I’d have been disheartened and probably gone and kicked the nearest cat.  There are definite improvements in place, there are still areas which need some serious work, but most importantly there is still time for Konami to get it right.

I am going to be very interested to hear what you guys have to say about this article which I have spent a great deal of time putting together.  I’m sure there will be lots of questions too, so please use the comments section to ask questions, and I will look to answer your questions to the best of my ability in a special Q&A this Friday.

I hope my impressions of the game hasn’t left any of you thinking the worst, and giving up on Konami.  I truly believe that they are listening to us, and that we will not be let down come October.

Thanks for reading

    My honest opinion…
Not bad for a 50% complete game.

one question, can you change sliders and card ability in game or do you have to go on the formation menu?

  3. R9NALD9 Says:

How can anyone fall for the 50% claim? There is not a chance in hell it can only be 50% done by now (3-4) months before release…talk to anyone in the gaming industry and they will tell you it’s absolutely bull****.

Konami have claimed that this game has been in development for more than a year, do you guys really think that after more than a year with all these glitches and **** that all this will be fixed in 3 months? hahaha

Stop being naive…come October and you will see the dissapointment and hate preached on these forums.

Keep in mind….this playtest took place about a month ago…
just to prepare a demo and decide what to show and what not to can take weeks ( i know, I have a friend who works for EA in florida )

so dont be an idiot….by the time the 50% code was being shown off….konami was well ahead of the 50% mark….they are most likely somewhere at around 70% now or 75%

If you want to say something contstructive than do so….if you want to eat sh&$% than go do it somwhere else

R9ONALD9, If you were smart so should you have realized that the demo the played is 50% and the actual game is probably 70 or something. Looks like you open your mouth without some fact.

to everybody dissing me, doesn’t this **** sound EXACTLY as last year, the same theories, the same arguments all over again.

I want PES10 to be as good as any of you, but I’m sorry according the the report and the gameplay video on winningelevenblog I saw, it seems pretty ordinary and a LOT similar to PES09 except for the graphics.

Looks like I will have to invest in Pro Evo, FIFA and Modern Warfare II soon. Buy them all, play whatever tickles your underslide that day, whats the problem?
There is one small problem, with all this game time, I wont have much time for ‘personal quality alone time’ with myself. I already find myself emotionally unavailable, but without physical self contact I will have a bag bigger than Santa’s come Christmas day…

Dougiedonut, The trick stick is on the right analouge.

“Then there’s the welcome news for many that tricks are no longer mapped onto the d-pad/left analogue stick, going back to the combination of holding R2 and a direction”

And a question, We have Manual Passing but Manual Shooting?

  13. Airbag Says:

    @ me? and Alexis

I find it a sad statement on the level of intelligence of some posters when a guy with a differing opinion and a realistic outlook on the game is told to eat s*$&t and him being not so smart is implied.

We’ve swallowed it all from Konami before, all the lies, and reading that 8 way movement is still in seals it for me. This game will suck, it may look prettier than last year and minor tweaks may have been made but PES has always been about gameplay and no amount of window dressing will compensate for stiff rigid movements on the pitch.

This is a next gen console for christs sake, NEXT GEN. and Fifa will have 360 degrees of movement this year, did you hear that, 360 degrees, thats 360 directions you can go and we have 8. We will have to use stiff running angles to get our player to a part of the pitch we desire, three angel changes will have to made whilst running to get there, on Fifa you can go anywhere on the pitch just by pointing your player there, spaces can be exploited like never before.

8 way movement is simply unacceptable from Konami, this was the year PES was going to be back on the map, and we go from 8 way movement to 8 way movement in 12 months. Konami need to fire Seabass and his team and get some of the Fifa boys in, at least they keep promises and make worthwhile improvements.

Now as for the backlash, all you guys getting ready to call me a Fifa fanboy and request that I return to the Fifa forums, let me make it clear, I’ve owned almost every PES, right from the early International superstar soccer days and loved the PS2 gameplay and I dont and never have owned a copy of fifa, that may change this year but I cant take this from Konami anymore, Just re-read all the promises in this years press release, improved gameplay, back to simulation etc etc……………..? bull, 8 way movement again, not even 16 or 32 but they’ve kept 8 possible directions for us to run in, no amount of animations will fix this, I bought Pes 2008 and returned it a week later, I wont even touch this, unless, UNLESS the 50% improvement fixes this, I’m not holding out much hope……..

…..and for those who like to live in denial or false hope, for those who hated everything I just said because its probally a reality too frightening for them to deal with, a reality that PES2010 will have been polished but will be as mush fun to play with as a soggy cardboard box, for all those about to call for my head………..

…..just please come out with some valid arguments, articulate yourself, don’t resort to name calling like the two mentioned above when you come across someone with a differing opinion, someone who calls a spade a spade because the like the other two guys you will just come across as pathetic.

  14. Anon Says:

Having read this, the leaps forward that were promised sound much more like very small baby steps. I will be very dishartened if daft issues such as invisible barriers have not been removed in the final game as well as seeing the inclusion of power bars for ALL types of kick (ala Fifa09). Although I think that this will only happen when they finally scrap the existing engine and go for something completely new.

To me the game needs a completely fresh new look. The menus look exactly the same as 10yrs ago (ISS), just with different colours. The in game hud is exactly the same as 10yrs ago and as for the abismal crowd chants – how hard can it be to recreate crowds like Fifa09??? Come on Konami pull your finger out!

This to me looks like another complete rehash of an aging game and given that DD’s list of negative points about the demo are exactly the main reasons why I have gone off PES in recent years I don’t see me buying it this year.

  15. Anon Says:

Airbag I think we posted at the same time so have just read your comments as well and agree that it is sad that people struggle to voice their opinions on this site without getting a completely immature backlash.

  16. Cuttingthroughthe crap Says:

Mixed emotions really, extreme dissapointment that we will probably have another year of 8-axis movement and that this is still for me the biggest fundamental problem with PES made worse by the fact that ISS and perfect striker3 by konami had 360 movement and passing 13 years ago and that 360 movement isnt that hard to master and people would actually find it more intuitive then 8-axis and enjoy PES more.

Over issues include invisible walls on throw ins and lack of accuracy on goal kick placement and throws.

While i certainly really like the increased graphical fidelity, card system and tactical slider i would of prefered konami to have left pes2009 graphics as they where and implemented 360 movement and made wholesale changes to the ageing 8-axis animation system as well as improving free kick and set plays and the other underlying issues with pes2009 ie mapping manual passing to the left d-pad or left thumbstick and x,o,triangle buttons.

While i certainly appreciate its still early my optimisum is slightly dampened at what has been shown so far as cosmetics are great when you have a solid game experience that this is built on,not ageing dated control mechanics that are as outdated as 2d games.

So probably another year of a fine looking game that offers the same limited 90 and 45 degree flat angles of games like metal slug and pac man, only showing graphical and tactical innovation rather then on the pitch with improved physical control, fluid movement and 360 degree movement and passing.

  17. Addi Says:

@ Airbag, Anon, and Cutting through.

Could not agree with you more.

Konami has been full of empty promises. The thing is they seem way to arrogant to accept that their game is poor, and needs a NEW engine. Not a refined PS2 engine. It’s been 3-4 years of next gen and what do we have to show for it? An arcade game I should be playing at the local games arcade.

Graphics are good, yeah sure, but that gloss will quickly wear off when the poor gameplay comes through.

It reminds me of the old gen days. PES was the game with the BEST gameplay, hands down. The graphics were good, but they didn’t really concentrate on improving them dramatically. Unlike FIFA in the old days, they knew their game engine was rubbish, so they tried to spark their game up with pretty graphics.

Wake up and smell the flowers Konami.

  18. fan Says:

before i start i have played pro since the iss days on the ps1, only last year, i started playing fifa and was impressed,

    well said airbag, great post,

8-movement, is just not good enough, 16? i agree with DD, maybe staring there and moving up, but still 8? c’mon its been like that since iss on PS1!!! more than 10 years ago!!!ps3 is suppossed to be next gen, how many times have you tried to get a loose ball, and ran around it trying to get it, this will still happen, its 2010 FFS, fifa’s 360, could be the final nail in Pro’s coffin tbh,

looking at the screenshots, the graphic and general presentation look excellent and the sliders looks a good concept also, but the sliders need to be implemented into the actuall match, could you imagine, playing against stoke him bein 1-0 up going in and out the formation menu changing the sliders? that would be very annoying,

great that its slowed down, less relaint on speed and dribblers,

invisable barriers? wtf? whys that so hard to remove? do they listen to us at all?

the card system, why? stats and abilitys are a major selling point for pro, btw the stats going down if a players moved out of posistion is a piece of genuis IMO,i’ve called for this for years.

penaltys, about time this has been addressed, fantastic

trick stick, keepers, keepers goal kicks, chipping, invisable barriers,no passing power bar,and of course 8 movement, shows they are not listening, EVEYBODYS been calling for these for years to be addresed.

sorry, but i wont beleive its 50%done it’ll be nearer 80/90%, the vast majority will be done, they’ll just need to add the updated transfers, which HAS to be in place for release,no excuses, if fifa can do it for 2009, pro should be able for 2010! (if i need to edit or wait for an update for up to date transfers i will scream),

no doubt ill buy it but if it doesn’t reach the standerds i expect ill trade it in for fifa, the more superior game the now and probably will be next year.

  19. Dopecoil Says:

What a cop out konami you pioneered 360 movement and passing 14 years ago on the n64 and then on the ps2 with perfect striker3

BTW @ post 3 – it is the gameplay and animation codes that were 50% complete. Other parts of the game, such as graphics are more than 50% complete.

360 degrees movement would be difficult to implement especially when some people want to use the D-pad for player movement. Fifa have got around this by the fact that they use the D-pad for tactics and only have the left stick for movement.

To me 360 degrees movement would be a great feature for PES and would add freedom to gameplay. However, EA Canada have spent most of their time on this. This would time-consuming for Konami but possibly after Fifa 10 they will realise what a difference it makes.

im fairly happy with what i read in most places, and although IMO i no it wont be perfect its clear to see konami making an effort to get our views and take them on board!

1 thing though, i no we keep wanting pes2010 to catch up with fifa and implement all the same stuff, but if they do that then we will just have another fifa! we need konami to come up with new ways to improve the game and although i like there fan input now, they as a developer should really be able to produce a revolution of new ideas by themselves alone! they need to hire someone not scared to take the series forward rather than people who are scared of falling further behind! start the footballing revolution, dont just join it!

  24. R9NALD9 Says:

I’m hugely dissapointed by the report…really. I’ve owned every PES game since ps1 and this year may be the first that I won’t buy it at all.

All this improvements about player cards, tactics, real money in ML etc. is smokescreens. None of this was needed to make PES the complete football game, no matter what they do it will feel like the old PES since it will have the usual primitive 8 directional movement.

Player cards = exactly the same as the special skill attributes just done visually and pretty

tactics = nice addition, but won’t make the game a world beater, plus we had tactics in previous installments

real money = don’t care, it won’t change anything to the experience

graphics, graphics, graphics = don’t care, don’t care, don’t care

All the **** that hampered gameplay (animations, 8 directional movement, invisible barriers etc.) is still there! WTF!!!!

Fifa is going to kill PES this year, count my words! I’m not a fifa fan, but did enjoy fifa09 and will probably pick up fifa10 as well. With 360 directional movement, NEW set piece creator, more leagues, more players, completely revamped manager mode, more stadiums, better presentation etc. fifa will own pes. Sad but true.

I’m sick and tired of Seabass’s false promises, each year we are promised a total revamp, this year they promised a new engine (what happened to that promise made last year?), each year we are promised better presentation (just to find it sucks as usual)…I’m fed up with pes, I’ll wait for a decent gameplay movie for final judgement, but if that doesn’t get me excited Konami and Seabass can shove my copy of PES10 up their stupid asses.

Great article DD. Still a little worried that Konami will not improve much on the gameplay and the minus list you made after playtesting although only 50% is a little worrying if they not fixed come the finshed game. Sorry but Konami have a lot to do if FIFA fix the problems from their 09 game. Surely Konami will play the game to death and see any problems now and from previous versions and make sure they are near as damit spot on for release?

  37. 11keeno Says:

Csnt eait, thanks for your report made very interesting reading

  38. Blade1889 Says:

I’m both optimistic and disappointed by the preview:

I’m really excited about the special cards and slider system! It sounds like it will really have an effect on the gameplay and actually make you think about what tactics to use to win a tight game :)

It also sounds like the graphics are really impressive this year (which isn’t anywhere near as important as the gameplay, but still good to hear).

I’m glad the passing has been improved and game speed slowed down. That is one of the major problems of PES 2009 for me.

However, it also sounds like Konami haven’t changed some simple things eg invisible force field, keeper throws, power gage. Hopefully thses will be implemented in the final game.

I’m also disappointed that the running animations haven’t been changed but hopefully this will also be changed in the final game.

Overall I’m quite optimistic for PES 2010 but I’m not going to get my hopes up. I think the big test is how Fifa’s 360 degree movement compares to PES 8-direct movement? If Fifa pull it off then it could make PES 2010 look very dated before it’s even been released!

  41. Matthew Sanderson Says:

Just because there is only 4 months to go before release doesn’t mean Konami can’t submit a 50% complete version for play testing. I would imagine improvements are being made all the time but you have to draw the line at what you include in the playable demo, if you just keep adding to the demo it would never be finished. I would have liked to see 16 way movement but lets see how the 8 way works with new animations before we condemn it. At the end of the day I enjoy PES2009 and if 2010 is better then i’ll be happy. The cards and sliders if they have a real impact on the game are a step forward.
Let’s wait for the next play test before we start hailing / condemning the game.

I have played FIFA and think it is a good game but to be honest I get far greater feeling of satisfaction when I score a goal in PES than I do with FIFA.

  42. RFC-CHAMPS-09 Says:

Airbag i understand your frutrations, This is the game that PES 09 should have been really.

I hope the graphics imrove greatly it looks grear up close but from the playing camera angle (where 90% of the game is played) it still looks PS2 like, unlike Fifas realistic MOTD look.

8 way movement is very disapointing and will mean i will be going with fifa again this year (since 360 sounds really interesting to me as you are given true freedom n the field ) I will still rent PES dont get me wrong but i said i would not buy another game of the PES series if it did not make the upgrade. 08 and 09 i bought mainly due to the reputation PES had had and i was hooked on the PS2 versions but since the next gen its just not been the same game.

There are some good improvements for this year by the sounds of it , but i cant buy the 50% complete thing , and if you were on this site a few years ago you would be as cautious as me as they have hit us with the same year after year and we have all been left disapointed!

Hope its different this year…really do! But ill be playing it safe with fifa 10.

P.S well done Dougie on getting inside the whole Konami thing hopefully you will be able to keep up the good relationship and build on it , you deserve it (and the rest of the guys) you all put loads of work into the site and im sure i speak for us all when i say we are really greatful!

  43. rasputin Says:

Lets clear this 8-axis argument up,contary to what DD states 360 degree movement would not be a difficult transition for pes players to make as it is the most natural way of moving a player and passing the ball.

You simply have the freedom to move and pass in any direction in a more fluid and precise way on the pitch.

Being a konami veteran of 20 years i had this level of control with ISS2000 on the n64 and as dopecoil states on the ps2 with perfect striker3 back in 2001.

Konami need to show some balls and switch to full analog control on the left thumbstick with 360 movement and manual passing mapped to the left thumbstick and x,o,triangle buttons much like ISS as this was a more fluid and logical way of playing and controlling the game.

Konami can improve the player modelling and make the graphics hyper real but it wont disguise the wooden flat player movements and 8-axis animation that destroys any sense of realism.

I guaranntee EA have been viewing this site and others and implementing all the revolutionary enhancements we all want to win us over this year to fifa10.

Come on konami ISS and perfect striker had

No invisible walls on throw ins

Seamless 360 degree passing and shooting allowing full direction control of pace and direction on a 360 degree plain

fluid player animation that was organic and looked real

    underarm keeper throw

    accurate goal kicks and placement

The ability to cross from extreme angles from the wings manaully and place on forwards heads or chest in the box.

Tricks including-rainbow flicks, juggling, roulettes, switches, feints, shimmys, chest trapping, looping headers and raising the ball(in front and over your players head)

Elevation changes made manually via the left thumbstick on crosses and long passes.

A manual through ball on a 360 degree plain using the left thumbstick.

Refined not over sensitive power bars.

    A trap button

    180 turns

Refined accurate heading and the ability to play head tennis with your teamates.

Manual ultra realistic one-two system that allowed you to delay

    Simulated game speed and gameplay

AI ten years ahead of its time.

  44. Dave O Says:

Decent review, but using words like “crappy” isn’t going to get you invited to the next one IMO! ;)

Anyway, I’m happy with the confirmation that we still have D PAD control, and I do agree that the tricks system is better if mapped to a modifier than the DPAD, I just would have put it a little more diplomatically… Here’s hoping they listen to that bit though.

Sounds so far like a game I will greatly appreciate, and I have no doubt that I will be satisfied, since thinbs like 360 control and invisible barriers don’t matter to me. That might be shocking to some people, but I for one am happy.

My thoughts are now seriously concentrated on how these changes will affect the BAL experience. I think (just a hunch) that one of the reasons that individual dribbling was so powerful in 09 was because of BAL – effectively allowing you to play the game as a one-man force, like CR7/9. SO, it will be very interesting to see if BAL is going to “suffer” or imporve now that it will NEED to be based more on team play. I’ll be looking forward to playing the new J League on PS2 (and can provide a review when I do) and I have to say that BAL in last year’s J League was more based on team play, and a much better experience IMO than BAL on PES 09… That being said, I can’t help but speculate that the sliders, as well as the cards, will be controllable by the player in BAL, effectively giving us a bit of coaching ability. I’m not sure that’s what I want to see in BAL, but it would definitely add something to the game, and help silence some people who have complained to no end about team mate AI (this would effectively allow you to control it).

I would be surprised if my guess is off the mark actually, since it seems to make sense and explain exactly why they have done what they have done this year, but of course I’ll have to wait until more news comes through about this year’s BAL to be sure.

    PEACE.

These guys where light years ahead of seabass and his team and created some of the most simulated football games ever that where a joy to play and control via the analog stick on a 360 degree plain and why has PES always been a backwards step to these masterclasses in game design.

Why cant konami marry all that is good in PES with this opus series then we would have a true next gen football game.

  48. gerard Says:

    good to hear!

  49. Suv Says:

There is certainly some good news in this article, no doubt they have improved on PES2009 but as many other people mention it seems like almost all of the small problems that constantly effect the actual gameplay are still present :(. I find it hard to believe they didnt sort those out in the first 50% but plan/planned to do it in the following 50% of development as it doesnt make sense when allowing fansite representatives etc. to test out the game at 50% complete. Surely, if those things were going to be addressed it would have been done early to get quite a few positive bullet points out to the fans from the early testing to big up the game and get some much needed, renewed belief in Konami.
I also cannot believe 8 way movement looks to still be in! Forget Fifa’s promised 360 movement…im just thinking of PES and the fact that the clunky 8 way movement has blatantly effected the overall gameplay in a negative way for years. When Konami started covering their butt’s regarding PES2009’s lack of improvement mentioning a whole new game for PES2010 being the reason i expected big changes overall for this next instalment. It really doesnt seem as if thats the case at all. Currently im left wanting because i feel like the graphics, menu’s etc have been the main focus once again unfortunately. After that some strategy improvements, then last..and it seems least imo,the things that really matter, the things that constantly effect gameplay all the time have been overlooked once again. This is a real shame to any proper PES fan i would imagine.
After all this negative text i’ve actually decided im gonna stay fairly positive believe it or not.
Personally, from now on i am willing to stay positive about PES2010 and believe all the minor problems, which make for major and consistant gameplay problems, will be resolved by its release (yes..im giving Konami one more credit for some reason lol). If this happens we will have a reasonably improved game come october regardless of the harsh, and probable inclusion of 8 way movement once again.
If they do not make all the much needed small improvements and decide to release it relying on mostly cosmetic changes and a promise of a whole new game for PES2011 or something to that effect i will be deeply dissapointed, step away from the PES series, and either turn to Fifa or stop playing and paying out for football sims altogether tbh. I will once more give Konami the benefit of the doubt this time but in my eyes they’re on their 3rd strike and if they dont hit the mark this time im out as i will have completely lost my belief and motivation to continue following the PES series.
Come on Konami….lay this one down with some proper passion and conviction in improvements come its release so all of the longtime fans and supporters can trust you once again. Not only that, but so you as a company and PES as a franchise can continue to grow instead of decline.

  50. Anon Says:

@ Gazelle 22 – Just to put you straight slightly. Fifa 09 allows the gamer to set up the controller any which way they want so the D-pad can infact be used to control the players. I had it set up this way as that’s how I used to play PES.

I don’t think that it has actually been confirmed yet for Fifa10 as to whether you will only be able to use the left stick. It would make sense as the D-pad cannot handle 360 movements as it only has 8 points, not 16 like a stick.

I hope that EA have been reading this site and implementing all of things that we would like to see. That way at least we’ll have a great game to play this winter not just some rehash!!

Yes, some people want it, but you will see it is represented out of proportion on this site mostly due to what I think are people double posting under different names.

Ive read on various sites including IGN that the people that have played and tested the 360 on fifa 10 say it completely changes how the game is played on the console and going back to 09 feels awkward and uneasy. Many people inside the gaming industry know that 360 for future football games is a must. We have the technology in abundance and the power of the next gen consoles deserves the very best. 58. Dopecoil Says:

    @dave o

Stop this rediculous assumption that i am making multiple comments when im not.

The fact is dave there are hundreds of thousands of people that played ISS and perfect striker in the west and japan back in the day and experienced 360 degree movement and manual control mechanics that have always been 90% better then what we have had in PES for ten years.

PES has always been built around the d-pad that is its biggest flaw and the restrictive basic 1980s 8-axis movement.

Regardless of what your backwards thinking might be theres only about 20% percent of pes users that still use the d-pad
and of course people polled on this site will vote for the d-pad because they make up most of that 20%.

Wake up and smell the coffee dave and open your eyes and learn a bit of history based on facts, while pes might have better player likenesses and facial expressions plus a slightly better instant short pass in all other respects its ten years behind what ISS and perfect where back in 1996 on the n64 a pad that was pioneered for 360 degree movement and forward thinking analog control.

I dont need some mainstream ps2 loving fanboy that has only expereineced PES telling me a 35 year old gamer of 28 years who has watched and played football for 30 years that 8-axis ****ty restrictive movement on a d-pad is superior to 360 degree movement and passing on a analog stick.

  67. Airbag Says:

Well, I for one applaud Dougie for his honesty. If you go over to pesfan or winning eleven blog, their write ups are very positive, at least dougie exposed the 8 way movment, hats off to him.

Konami are sinking the series, I am in shock almost, the past two crappy versions and this year Seabass hires more staff to work on different areas, online and new animations were told in the press release, hope springs for pro evo fans and then what……

……the first playtest results confirm 8 way movement. Thats 3 years of it now, all that development and they cant go to 32 way movment, 16 at least. Its shocking that after all the complaints they’ve had from the past two games and that returning PES to its simulation roots with great gameplay was a priority this year, that they dont address this, if your looking to improve gameplay this is THE FIRST THING YOU ADDRESS.

I dont care but all the special ablilty cards and tactical sliders in the world to change a players and teams mentality wont ment diddly squat if that player has rigid, stiff, grids of movment. Again it seems Seabass has missed the point, obviously he’s not dumb, he’s said in the video gameplay is a priority, but he’s adding new features to a horribly flawed system aka polishing the turd. Rebuilding needs to be done, starting with 32 way movment at least.

I dont care how good the lighting is, if its stiff gameplay based on grids of movment rather than fluidty that is not possible with 8 way movment then this is the year that Seabass could kill off the series. I still cant believe it, 8 way movement, he needs to be sacked.

  68. Dopecoil Says:

    @47-jackthehat

I dont know what happened to MAJOR A,i do know one thing though the winning eleven team was set up to make a game more like fifa with the ball as a free-entity and 8-axis player movement like fifa with more automated gameplay to appeal to a more mainstream ps1 market.

Me and about three other testers where sacked by konami because we where telling them that 8-axis movement was not working and needed to return to ISS 360 degree movement and passing as the game was to simplified in respect to assisted passing and automated one-twos and that the switch to d-pad control which was a neccessity on the original ps1 pad needed to return to analog only when the ps1 analog stick was released and 16 way movement,as the only way you could have manual passing when you had a d-pad preference was to put it on the right thumbstick with the tricks.Plus due to 8-axis movement and passing the d-pad was superior to the left stick.

As a fan of analog control on the left thumbstick from my n64 days where manual passing was mapped to this and the relevant buttons as well as the tricks which was logical considering player tricks are brought about by player movement i was trying to get them to return to this system as it worked brilliantly.

Blindly due to ecomomic forces and fifas continued success with the license meant konami refused to go back to a more complex simulated control scheme believing there 8-axis movement was superior to fifas which it was at the time.

Because of PES success gathering a bigger new ps2 crowd whos only experience was of PES things have not changed in 8 years.

As someone who knows both PES and ISS inside out pes09 is ISS but with auto tackling and PES backwards restrictive control principles so unlike most i can see that a return to 360 degree movement and manual passing assigned to the left thumbstick and relevant button with the auto tackling and shooting removed plus no invisible walls on throw ins would make pes10 the dream game we all want.

Good, honest post of your opinion.

But i think u like FIFA a bit more then PES and that can be a bit disturbing.

How can you ask for 360 movement, if the PS3 only has 8 directional buttons on the D-PAD. You cant even have 16 directions on a D-Pad yet alone 360 movement.

Your forcing people to play analog. Think before u wish something. There is a reason why the majority of people use the D-Pad instead of the anologe. The anologe stick is a pain in the ass because its not responsive and clumsy.

I dont RSI on my hands becuz somebody has this crazy idea of implementing 360 movement forcing us to play with sticks.

the game speed in pes2009 wasn’t a problem for me, it was the unrealistic turns, stupid defence AL who got easily baffled, who ran out of position, or just let players run through, even though you predicted their movements. not
tbh it just sounds like the same boring game to me, and don’t think really see how it’s going to improve much than that 50%.

i think for the first time in over 10years i’m going to buy a fifa game. i would just like for fifa to speed up a bit, have better response to the controls, and less of the floaty ball. though this don’t mean i won’t buy pes 2010, but if the improvements aren’t enough when i play it at say a friends first, then i will become a traitor after years of loyalty to pes.

p.s. i’m avid lover of the d-pad, but even i see the need for change. if people played outside their little box and played fifa09 would realise that. i’m with progression not regression, glad to hear there is a more manual feel, but the restrictions are still there. i’m trying to keep an open mind, but it seems apparent to me Kon-ami have a closed mind.

  75. Dopecoil Says:

    74-ginx 72-ultimate

Of course you prefer the d-pad with PES because it uses a 8-axis movement system like 2d beatem ups and primitive 2d platformers.

Would you play mario 64 with the d-pad,no! because it has 360 degree analog control.

Stupid blinkered argument think before you post you have obviously never experienced 360 degree movement and passing in a football game otherwise you would understand its a world away from the flat restrictive 45 and 90 degree movement and passing angles we have in PES.

  76. Dave O Says:

    To clarify, yet again…

A.) I am not against 360 movement. I’m just saying it is not something I NEED! What I need is a great PES, and for me, to be honest, the 8 way control is a big part of what makes PES unique. EA copied it, the ISS series lost out to it, and we shouldn’t forget that there really are major advantages to it. As I’ve said before, it’s all about precision versus accuracy. You have more precision with the stick, but less accuracy. Again, though, I would welcome the change if it really happened, but let’s not pretend to think it is a simple case of 360 being more advanced technology. 360 (in the ISS sense) is an older way of playing the game, and it could be good if implemented now, but let’s not misrepresent PES as being “behind the times.” Going digital was a conscious decision, and for very specific reasons, not something fuled by a lack of technical gusto, or “balls.” Get real.

B.) 16 way movement IS possible. However, it would only be possible for the PS3, which has 8 directions out of which 16 can easily be interpolated. Keep in mind that this woudl only be possible on PS3, and on the new green XBOX 360 controller, which was designed with an 8 way D Pad with PES in mind. I’m notorious for pointing out flaws in people’s arguments, so just to show I’m fair I’ll point one out in my own (because I’m in favour of 16 way on the D Pad)… And that is that the green XBOX 360 controller isn’t even available in all countries, including Canada, where I’m from. So, for many XBOX players the game would have less features/playability than on the PS3, meaning that the 16 way control couldn’t be as fully impactful in the game because some players would have an advantage which others wouldn’t. I’d say that’s the likely reason why they didn’t implement 16 way this year, though I would also argue that XBOX players would still have the option of the analog stick if that were the case.

Also, for Dopecoil – The fact that you worked for the ISS team gives your opinions no more privelege than the rest of us. If you think it does, then please explain what secrets you know which you haven’t so far, because a lot of us have played plenty of ISS and we simply don’t have the same opinion as you do. We are all entitled to our opinions, but none of us have an entitled opinion.

Making up numbers to support your arguments doesn’t help your case either, and neither does accusing others of being backwards thinking or less experienced/knowledgeable than you are. Just stick to the facts, and quit making up BS. You accuse me of not knowing enough, and of being against 360 control, when I have said again and again that I am not against it. Unlike you, I think I understand some of the valid reaosns why Konami haven’t implemented it. It’s just not as black and white as you’re painting it.

Also – I’m 32 years old myself, a former player, and have played all the Konami games I’ve been able to get my hands on going back further than the N64 days even.

I’m not going to continue this discussion, since we have much more to talk about, but I will apologize for accusing you of multiple personalities. That may not be true it seems (though I wouldn’t be surprised if it is). That’s the problem with this forum though, you never know who is who. I might not even be myself right now for all I know! ;)

@52 that looks fantastic!! why cant pes have this??

  78. TOMSD Says:

    Dear Airbag;

We need to clarify something. 360 degrees (FIFA) vs 8 Way movement. 360 degrees – means you can rotate a full circle, it does not mean you can come out of the circle in 360 directions – no gaming company has that. 8 way movement means that you can come out of a circular movement in 1 of 8 directions. Fifa may have 16 now and not 8. But even so, from a gaming standpoint – it can feel too floaty and unrealistic. They key is the animation tied to the movement. If you press L2 on PES 2009 and then make movements – it feels a lot better than 8 directions. So I don’t think that FIFA have that big an advantage in that regard.

    @dave 0

If digital is superior to analog why do 99% percent of video games now use this more advanced method of control. Are tell you why because they use 360 degree movement not 8-axis is this getting through!!

As for digital being better i disagree it was designed and is best suited to games that work on a 2d plain not 3d and pes09 is superior in the analog setting.

As for my knowledge of working on ISS and the massive difference of this series i will break it down for you.

    360 degree movement

360 degree passing either toggled to a manual or assisted setting on the left thuumbstick.

360 degree manual shooting with the abilty to chip the ball by pulling back on the stick while pressing the shot button.Plus manually change the elevation on chips and shots by pushing forwards or back on the stick when the shot is struck.

Players that search for space and read the play off the ball providing key support and a passing option.

Intelligent hole filling by midfeilders when gaps appear while breaking forwards.

No pressing button as you had greater player control to close down players in possession of the ball.

    Fluid animation and player control.

    More tricks

    Looping headers

    A dedicated trap button

The ability to cross from any angle on the wings and place the ball manually on the head of the recieving player in the box with your left thumbstick making elevation changes manually with the stick rather then having to be parallel to the box or use the l1+circle buttons.

The ability to manaully dive, elbow and push players.

A one-two system that let you control the runner and delay.

Super refined headers and header placement with the ability to pass the ball just using your head if you had the skill.

The ability to move and pass anywhere on the pitch and this also applied to goalkeepers.

Intelligent free kick and set piece system that allowed simple passes to keep possession of the ball.

Snow, rain and early dynamic lighting effects.

    Top stats

Tacttics system similiar to pes2010 but not on a sliding scale.

A manual through ball that you could arc and curl and be very inventive with.

The abilty to hit harder crosses from the wings using the shot button.

No invisible walls on throw ins

I could go on and on but wont and am a PES fan and cant stand fifa.

  82. Thrilla_CFC Says:

I dont care what anybody says but PES is always better than Fifa no matter how pretty Fifa might be, but Pes is definately better, even with Graphics, Pes players looked more real than Fifa, have a look on utube and compare them. I just cant wait for the release.

  84. rasputin Says:

of course it will you twat it means you can pass and move in 24 more directions rather then the current 8,have a think about that when you next play PES.

Sounds very poor to me the gameplay sounds the same, just animations added! At leats it is 50%! If it stays at 8 direction movement then I’m defo buying Fifa 10.

  87. Dave O Says:

Ok, OK, OK…!!!! DOPECOIL – Having played plenty of ISS, I am aware of all of the above. Again, I’m not saying digital is superior. Listen for once! I am saying that it does have some advanatges. Let’s not argue please, it’s a ridiculous waste of time, especially since I have said about fifty times that I do not disagree, and we have plenty of better things to talk about right now.

    Now…

DD – are you able to answer questions? If so, did you try any fake shots? Anything different there in terms of effectiveness (was way too effective in 09) or animations? Also, can you confirm for us whether the skills are really on the d pad or not? Only one of PESGAMING and WENB can be right about this, and I think it’s an important thing, maybe the most important thing, to come from the playtest.

One more thing – I have to say I’m impressed that Konami thought of the idea of limiting the 90 degree turn at high speed to 45 degrees (hadn’t thought of that myself). Having played a lot of real soccer myself, I know this is actually the way real dribbling is… However, I would like a bit of clarification, because in PES 09 the 90 degree turn was still very effective when at normal pace (not holding run). Is it still the same? I have heard not all players do it, which is good, but all it takes is one ultra-effective move with one or more players per team to ruin the game (I can see people would just pass to the players with the move, then dribble in and score). Please explain in a bit more detail. I mean, Can’t you just take your finger off the run button, then make your 90 degree turn? Also, does it still have the same herky-jerky animation like a fake shot?

Konami please check out FIFA 09 and 10. Presentation, online functionality, match atmosphere and an overall huge improvement from previous FIFA titles.

PES has never really had stunning graphics. It’s all about the gameplay. That’s what has been the biggest disappointment in PES in recent years. Predictable goals and matches feeling a bit similar.

Stop concentrating on graphics and evolve the gameplay mechanics like better keepers and team-mate AI and improve other stuff like Master League and online quality.

  91. sakes Says:

    @ GNX
“Anolog stick = death of PES” you should leave an IMO next to your brash statement, its the silliest statement of the day, my friend has been using the analog on pes since pes 3 and I prefer it than using the x-box terrible d-pad..

Most on the blog here today, including its maker should go play fifa 10 you’ll be better off .. the 360 gimmick has taken over from the top down.. what you all don’t realise is the basic dynamics of football..: for a striker to pass a defender he has three options, one may go for either side of the opponent or through them ( which doesn’t necessarily mean a nutmeg). When playing football its not how many degrees one needs to change to evade the tackler: rather what movement one will coax the defender into committing to early, or in the wrong direction (ie what the Brazilians call jenga)(which is based on the player’s movement before he touches the ball [hence animations still to be implemented]).. What makes both these footy games exciting is the differing approaches used to get a result.. Fifa approach is that of a 500 bhp American lawn mower , their high polygon models are like puppets from Special 1tv or better yet something straight out of Ice age 3..whilst PES’ approach is that of a Japanese drift slalom tuner, completing twice the tasks using the same amount of resources(pes 2010 expanded team). I’m sure Konami’s producers often laugh at how many resources EA waste to get an average result.. well here’s another toast to 360 control MAY THE HOARDS RAGE ON..

  92. Goran Says:

if it wasn’t for internet access i’d think no one is bothering to play pes no more. the amount of my friends who were avid pes players, who now prefer to play fifa or just nothing at all says it all to me about the state of pes right now. pes2009 was crut, and i haven’t a positive word from anyone i know. thus pes2010 so far looks is nothing more this an expansion of pes2009, with better…… grafics, and……tactical system, and….slower pace. the game needs a new engine for goodness sakes, pes is played out. we don’t need that same game engine from ps2 days being rinsed over and over again on the next gen. i mean come on!! i remember expecting big things from konami on the next gen platform, look me now!! i’m a pessimist not because i want to be, but because of my recent bad experiences with the pes series. before that i was happy as larry. now my eyes woken to the fact that pes needs to step up, and so far fifa is the only football title looking to make big strides on the next gen.
i would like to be married to pes till death, but konami at the moment aren’t putting in the effort to make this relationship work.
when i played fifa09 for once it was a fifa title where i could express myself through my passing game. alot more so than i could express myself on pes2009. pes2010 i will try to keep the faith, but something tells me while seabass is still running things they won’t change much. he seems to think backwards rather tha forwards.

  93. Sweden Says:

Why are you guys talking about FIFA 09 like it was a good game? Ok, Pes 2009 was not a big step forward but i think the graphics look a lot better than FIFA. The new 360 control does sound amazing. But player movement is not the only thing that decides if gameplay is good. When you make a pass in Pes it really feels like you hit it yourself(you cant say that about FIFA). Everybode can play FIFA(especially the ones that think its neccesary to have the norwegian league for survival) but to be a good PES player you have to have some serious skills and football knowledge. So i dont see a problem with updated graphics and a gameplay that will be tha best on the market, again…

  94. GNX Says:

  96. Dave O Says:

@90, GNX – I think you’re right. I based my info about the dual shock 3 being capable of 16 way on something I read when the XBOX 360 controller with 16 way capability was released – I swear I read somewhere that the reason they were doing it was because the PS3 already had this capability. It seems like either me, or the article I read, were wrong. I haven’t found confirmation that 16 way is not capable on the PS3, but it looks like it’s not from what I have been able to find. Also, I think I may have found that the reason why Microsfot changed their controller is actually because the DPAD doesn’t function properly, sometimes choosing the wrong direction – something I’ve experienced quite a bit myself on my 360 controller. That’s my guess as to why they really changed it though, not confirmed. Anyway, it seems less and less likely that 16 way is possible, which explains even more why it’s still 8 way this year.

  97. passthedutchie Says:

    GNX

“There is no combination on a Ps3 controller to simulate 16 way movement.”

    Oh yes there is!

“360 movement is only possible on a anolog stick.”

That’s nice, you managed to correct yourself within two sentences!

If you want to remain on a ten year old game engine, why do you bother buying new additions to the PES series? Just buy an old copy of PES on the PS2 and edit away for updates.

Konami should bring out a DLC of PES5 on PSN and XBL to enable people who want to play “retro” games to get there fix. This will then enable Konami to bring PES into this decade!

Do you lot still get up to turn your TVs over whilst listening to your transistor radio? FFS!

SAD SAD VERY SAD DAY FOR PES FANS , if the graphics were the only thing that was stunning about the game it’s really sad.
no incredible animations, no breathtaking moves nothing that really left him in awe looking at the screen in disbelief and thinking to himself am i dreaming this or what, nothing like that.
just hopes, all his hopes were focused on the fact that this was a 50% build so we should expect some improvements come release day.
well ok let us all hope then that they are just pulling our legs and have something fantastic in store for us.
still that one question keeps running through my mind,” why the f…… would they do that ?.
any answers ? i’m all ears.

  99. taylan Says:

    Dear fellow fans,

If you remember, im from Australia and i forwarded my dream of PES2010 some time ago to Dougie-D, and asked him if he would be so kind to submit it here on the forum for you all to see. I must admit, it was a bit far stretched and i had aimed for Pluto in my asks of improvment.

I recieved a lot of backlash in which i expected, but was re-assured by dougie, not to let it get to me, but to keep on the encouragement of pushing Konami to improve.

Now, my reasons for aiming for the sky and hitting my head ion the light posts are now clear. We should have been doing that right from the begging rather than tryna stay positive with little improvments and baby steps hoping that even if they dont come through with 2010, then mayb 2011 or 2012… NO WAY!

This is not good enough for our consoles, i payed 700 plus dollars for my PS3, bought it for only 2 games. GTA4 and PES. ive been let down with only one of them, and it happens consistently.

Year after year, its the same old stuff.

about 3 years ago, i was a member of NBA-live series center, which is the same as this site. since 1997 i was a member, and year after year we kept pushing the makers (EA) to come up with the goods or we are giving up. Guess what? we did! some of us pulled the trigger, some said they would but never did, i havnt been on the site for years, and i havnt looked back at the game ever siunce (not even to see if maybe… just maybe. they may have changed.. NO!) Instead we have gone over to 2K series that made the large jumps and leaps if you wanna call it.

    Whats the point?

I wont be sticking around if they dont improve immensely, im not talking about the graphics and crap like that, im talking about a NEW game! Next Generation! value for our money, our dollar, our loyalty! and if they cant see that, or they wanna just make money off us slowly over the years, and release or improve bits by bit, slowly…eventually.. No! No chance!

I will be buying this game. one more time… if it does not do what it is supposed to, then thats it for me. this is not a statement i wish for them to read and **** themselves if people begin to think this way, i just want the game, the statements have been made time and time before. and **** the loyalty, that dont mean **** either.

sorry for getting away at the end. im upset.

  100. the_ghost Says:

Anyone who gets upset or dissapointed over a 50% build shouldnt read previews this early if they are going to judge games from them. 50% build, do some of the guys who are being so negative know that means HALF finished, HALF complete? lol its crazy to make judgements now,if this was after the next playtest which will be 70-80% build and animations hadnt been put in,then fine, maybe then it may start to get worrying but not at 50%.

Ive read some things that sound great, some that sound like they need some work, but hey its lucky they have another 50% of the game to build,so i wont be losing any sleep over it.

@Ramaxwy: Sad,Sad,Very Sad day for PES fans = Good title for a sad post. The questions you pose you already answer…50%build.Both EA and Konami have both said animations is one of the last things put in. They build a car before they paint it yeah?

i understand what u are saying.. “get a grip”, mate, this is passion, this is a lot of times, what i look forward to doing when i get home from work, before i go out on the town. its not my life, but definitely important to me, especially if im paying the kind of $$ we all do.

i did say i will buy the game, as using my common sense – give it the benefit of the doubt.

the proof is in the pudding.

  102. arj Says:

Trust me i’ll be stressing with you if there are problems in a few months time, but im just trying to say now is not the time to stress,

  104. Anon Says:

@ the_ghost – I think that the issue is that despite the fact it was only 50% finished people expected the significant fixes in the core gameplay to have started to come through. Issues such as invisible walls have plagued the game since the orignal version and to not have rectified this STILL despite 10yrs of hassle from fans was very poor.

Now, if they had said “look this is only 50% finished but well documented issues such as inivisible walls will be taken out by the finished product” then maybe we wouldn’t be seeing such a backlash in this thread.

Personally I think that the 360 movement maybe slightly overrated. I’ll reserve judgement until I see a demo of Fifa10 to decide but the fact that Konami seem to be so reluctant to break away from the dated PS2 engine is worrying and try new things to take the series forward can only fall into EA’s hands.

Maybe in someways it is actually us, the gamers, fault that this is the case. Given the demise in recent years we have been hankering for a PES similar to the likes of PES5 and PES6. Maybe by listening to us Konami have stuck with the core from these games and as a result cannot expand in other areas like we would perhaps want them too.

  105. CROFREAK Says:

Decent review by someone who is very critical about this game(not kissing ass to Konami) and i think we all must be critical this year( especially after last 2 years)!!! And i think this playtest means nothing to me…the game can feel and look totally different when it is finished( remember last year and the playtests…).
    CAUTION….CAUTION….CAUTION!!!

  107. Amateur Says:

That’s a fair review by DD, I particularly liked the “crappy” part… you cannot be more honest than that. Something I greatly appreciatte.

Anyways, even though the game was only at 50% it’s pretty obvious it will be yet another 8 Directional Simulation. Somehow, I can see myself mastering this game after about three days, it’s the same old concept. I’m disappointed by that, not even an upgrade to 16 Directions…

As for Animations and Motion Capture… ok, so the game is 8 directional and the 50% build barely haves any of the New Animations. Obviously, motion capture will make the game look and feel nice -but- will it add that much to the core gameplay?? Does “New Animations” equal new possibilities or just new visuals?

On the other hand, FIFA09 is a hugely flawed game and ridiculously overrated. So 360 movement isn’t going to fix everything. The game haves many issues that need to be addressed.

To be honest, I’m not that excited about either game… it sounds like more yearly improvements, but nothing truly revolutionary.

Konami had something with PES5 and PES6, but doesn’t knows how to move on from the D-Pad. Whereas on the other hand, EA Sports have produced a decent game after many years of superficial efforts… yet FIFA09 is highly overrated and needs massive improvements in many areas.

Between the two, I’m a bit more intrigued by PES10, the new Tactical depth sounds very promising… But at the same time I find it very disappointing that it will be tied to 8 directions yet again. This will be the 1st year I’ll take FIFA into serious consideration.

As for 8 directional movement vs 360 movement… I’m not that excited about 360 movement to be honest, because it sounds unecessarily precise. I was looking forward to an upgrade, perhaps 16 Directional Movement. It would definitely provide us with more skill and less “luck” -without- going as precise as 360 control.

But regardless, PES10 should be a very enjoyable game, it already sounds like a solid effort… just not the “revolution” we were promised.

It’s still worth considering, that there are 45 minutes left on the clock. It could prove a massive (and decisive) difference, or just enhanced visuals. Who knows…

where looking at about 12 weeks until release,PES10 must be currently at the beta stage as the final game must be ready about 6-7 weeks before release for printing and promotion, that leaves konami 5 weeks to implement a massive animation overhaul and fixes.

Speak to anyone in the industry and they will tell you if your demonstrating a 50% build on a dev kit and havent even started to show the console specific versions yet in july this is worrying.

The sand of time is falling through the hour glass and i think it will be another year before we get the real improvements as konami want to see what ea do this year with 360 movement and have spent much of there time on lighting and graphics plus the new card system and slider.

  110. Starkster Says:

AGAIN no square netting, especially at Anfield!! I don’t think they can see just how unrealistic this makes the game, bring back square netting and the whole game will feel more realistic…. ever wondered why it’s never felt the same since PES6!

  111. anon Says:

Honestly people dont hold your breath because you will be in for a big dissapiontment this year.

Its more then obvious we are going to have a polished pes09 with the auto tackling and shooting removed but still feel like passengers with ai now that seems to have its own agenda.

Konami are taking it down the road of a stratergy management sim, greater physical control and more axis of movement is not there priority.

All the people that think 360 movement is a gimmick you are wrong its not it would address alot of the problems that has plaqued the series for ten years but wont be implemented into pes2010 because the game and scripted gameplay would not be able to cope as and it would just demonstrate how flawed pes really is.

  112. anon Says:

Its just the way the game industry is now developers are obsessed with photo realistic graphics and hyper advanced ai routines.

Football at its most realistic can be slow and boring at times and this is what konami are obsessed with emulating.

To make anything massively playable and fun you have to have realism but you have to also exaggerate reality this is why games like pes06 are better because it strikes the right balance between still being a game but at the same time capturing the essence of football.

think of some of the best games of the last ten years like,halo,cod4 these games look very realistic but infact arent because if they did have accurate ballistics and gunplay they would be very dull to play.

Look on the net at all the previews of pes10 its all the same pictures so obviosly all the people that have tryed the game have been given the same press packs,it all seems very orchestrated and contrived.

If konami have made the animation better why arent they shouting about it,because they havent they have created a smoke screen with better graphics and a slider system to try and detract the attention and talk away from the fact that they refuse to evolve the 8-axis passing and movement system.

  114. aNon Says:

does anybody wonder why Konami had 360 movement on N64 but have not used it since then?

because it is a gimmick, it doesn’t add anyhting to the game, 8 directional movement is enough, especially as 360 movement would be pointless with the d-pad, which gives you much more control than the analogue stick anyway. Can you imagine trying to run in a straight line with 360 movement? you’d be all over the shop!!!

  115. anon Says:

It reminds me so much of the headache bungie went through with halo and how boxed in they become by creating a stellar first game and that to appease there massive fanbase they where never able to really innovate the series or take it out of the box that they created which meant staggnation started to set in as well as developer apathy.

If i was konami i would of scrapped the PES template from the ps2 when they went next gen and built a new game.

All this where listening to fans is lip service the only people that read fans comments are konamis public relations and marketing people who select the better ideas and pass them on to japan hq.

Konami have there own ideas for the series and thats the road PES will be going down whether we like it or not.

analog control worked like a dream on the n64 as did 360 degree movement and passing it was more accurate then the d-pad and gave you a massive range of passing, movement and shooting angles.

360 movement is not a gimmick it adds another layer to the gameplay, look on the net at journalists and proffessionals in the industry there all saying it and i dont think you will find many people that experienced 360 movement on the n64 that will agree with you.

  118. RFC-CHAMPS-09 Says:

Anon you dont know what 360 will be like untill you have played fifa, and since you clearly have not then you cannot judge.

If the ps1 had been released with a analog controller we would not have 8-axis movement in pes now it was neccesity at the time as the first ps1 controller only had a d-pad.

8-axis movemnent went out of vogue when games went 3d,all the people that say 360 degree movement wont work are the same people that believed 3d would never work and look where we are now.

I found it really sad when people who play all there other games with a thumbstick cant see the protential and the benefits of 360 degree movement and analog control in a football game, think back to how one dimensional gaming once was and how good games are now to control.

What are you afraid of dont you want your senses to be flooded and be given a new dimension in your play if fifa pull it off you wont be playing pes this year however well it plays because
360 movement gives you a unparalled freedom.

Always played ISS and LOVED PES during its PS2 reign. PES2 and 6 were my fave!! PES lost it when the went to next gen. PES6 was awesome. so much fun. remember random team selection??

FIFA pulled their socks up with next gen, offering a game that was so close PES2008. I bought both.

FIFA 09 is now a better game than PES2009. I bought both again, but sold PES2009 after 3 months as it wasnt getting used.

With FIFA 09, 30-40 quid now gets you –
A great football game with amazing graphics. It IS a fun game, no matter what ppl might say on here!!
Full licensed with most of the worlds players and leagues
    Manager Mode
Lounge Mode – decent multiplayer league/points type thing
Online modes – Ultimate team (fantastic), 10 vs 10 and exhibition
    Be a pro
Nice menus, loading screens, music, presentation

    With PES09 –
Good footy game with good graphics
Only top flight leagues and teams
Champions League license – Still not sure what the point in this is, apart from more kits
    Likenesses of players fab
Master league thats now been the same for about 6 years
One online mode that doesnt work well
    Become a legend
    Nice looking menus, awful music

At the end of the day FIFA 09 is a better computer game than PES09, and from hearing the news from both parties, it looks like FIFA is going to further pull away. More people this year, like myself will, be putting PES down and trading it for FIFA. As simply, it is a better football game!

    End of.

  123. aNon Says:

Well we will have to wait and see i suppose, don’t get me wrong i would love it if fifa’s 360 movement revolutionises (that could be spelt wrong!!) the way football games are played but i’m just a little sceptical, if the technology was available on the N64, i would have thought someone would have tried it before now if it’s that good!

Saying all that though i havn’t bought Fifa since Fifa 98 N64 but i’ve struck a deal with my brother this year where i will buy Pes and he will by Fifa and after 6 months we are going to swop games so i can give both games a fair chance without having to buy them both!

When nintendo released the n64 and the first true analog controller with 32 way movemnt it revolutionised the games industry and was as monumental to gamings evoluton as mans invention of the wheel.

Everybody followed suit and majora konamis football developement team created one of the most breathtaking and realistic simulations of football at the time utilising this advance in controller technology to the max with true 360 degree movement and passing that incompassed real player animation and movement.

14 years later we have one of the most visually stunning renditions of football in pes09 but one that uses control technology from the dark ages on a isometric 2d plain.

If konami continue to stick with this laboured one dimensional method of control this may well be there final year as even the most ardent of pes fan will start to question there ability to modernise a 1980s control sheme.

Questions are already being raised across the internet in relation to this backwards control scheme with the cracks growing even wider the more konami increase the graphical fidelity.

PES IS THE ONLY GAME THAT PLAYS WITH D-PAD!!!!!
all others new games are playing with analog!!! where are we leaving on???

  129. anon Says:

When konami switched from the ISS series to PES the game became more focused on ball control rather then player control to try and simulate the sophisticated movements of a real pro while dribbling the ball,as time has gone on the ball control has become tighter and less loose but the movement and passing system hasnt evolved along with this this is why it is still very hard to truelly create clever plays yourself or string long spells of passing with a good solid end product.

The passing system has always been very broken as is the users ability to be creative with the ball as due to the restrictions of 8-axis movement and passing everything has to be very orchestrated.

This limits the user to heavily using the short pass and the better speed of the faster players as low percentage play becomes random and mostly innaffective.

  130. Sam Says:

Saw gameplay, saw your review. Wow the gulf between PES and Fifa looks to grow.
8 way control movement bluddy hell. That’s awful, I can’t believe they didn’t change that which I thought was the biggest problem with PES, along with the speed which thank god they have changed. But no power up pass :( ?

Wow least I know not to buy PES this year, like I did with 09 last year. It is once again going to be a difficult year for PES fans, who like myself, can’t say I’m loyal anymore…

    Thanks for sharing the info.

  131. Rob Says:

Calm down people! This is only a GAME and, yes, we want it to be ultra realistic,we want it to play well and we demand a better online experience. FIFA 09 is a very good game, but, why do I keep going back to PES09? Simple answer is that PES has better gameplay and coupled with the fact you can edit almost anything into the game (let’s face it we all love to see a kit we’ve created take to the pitch). I just hope they’ve got rid of the bloody awful ball sound which sounds like a cannon being fired when you kick the ball and the “tippy tappy” sound when dribbling.
I hope they keep the importation of your own music and updates in the game as this was very good in PES09.
I personally don’t use the D-pad only the left analogue stick for dribbling and movement purposes and have had many an enjoyable game this way.
The Champions League is a joy to behold (once you’ve updated the proper kits and chants to the game).
I’m glad to see an english stadium in the game(even if it is only Anfield)as this was severely lacking in 09.
We want more choices in the next game regarding boot/ball and possibly turf.
To sum up,I don’t think the gameplay is all that bad we just need more options to configure it to our owm personal tastes.

How long before the polish of photo realistic graphics and a tactical slider wears off and the reality of restrictive stiff 2d movement and passing kicks in about 1 day.

How can you make the game so tactically accurate but but still expect the user to move and pass on a 8-axis plain.

Theres no way the game can now be so solid tactically with real attacking and defensive attributes unless konami have increased the axis of movement and passing.

Mo-cap sessions with japanese pros every week since last year and a dedicated session with lionel messi and a free-stylist.

I think the bigger news and all the stuff we want like increased player fluidity and maybe 16 way or 32 way movement is yet to come.

Weigh up all the new stuff like the tactics slider and card system do you think konami have gone to these lengths without massively overhauling the current animation system.

Rightly we all have the right to be sinnacle but i still think konami have got a rabbit to pull out of the hat this autumm these guys are the best at what they do.

  134. GNX Says:

    1 Thing… D-Pad > Analoge stick.

D-PAD is more responsive and accurate on the PS3. Its the other way around for Xbox fans.

Second, the only way to implement 16 way movement at least is by changing the D-PAD on the ps3 to the D-PAD on the old 16 bit console called GENESIS aka MEGADRIVE 15 years ago brought out by SEGA!

  135. GNX Says:

I refuse to play with a stick knowing what pains it bring to your arm (RSI) and the unacurate responce and movement.

Analoge stick is needed for games like socom or games where u dont change derections every so second.

U guys really must suck on this game if your playing with the analoge stick on the ps3.

So Xbox noobs just back off. We all know the PS3 pad owns..
Hence no change since ps1 to it..

    GNX,
I have a 360 and still use the D-pad when playing.
Sure it may not be as effective as playing on the PS2 pad coupla years ago, but it just shows how much I’d rather play on the pad than the unpredictable analogue stick.
Like an earlier comment noted, its almost impossible to run in a straight line at times using the analogue stick.

  139. baseballfurie Says:

I think the 8 way control i good, cause i dont think i could change and play with the analogue stick instead of the D-pad, which is much more accurate, gives u much more control. I have played PES against many people, and those people that plays with the analogue stick always sucks, and those who plays with the D-pad are usually very good.

  140. aNon Says:

another thing, these people that want a power gauge for passing, use the right analogue stick and that is exactly what you have, or just use the pass button because the strength you put on the button determines the weight of the pass, just without the on screen gauge.

  141. anon Says:

    gnx and other d-pad lovers

The analog stick is more sensitive then a d-pad and requires less lateral pressure and allows a much greater range of movement even in 8-axis.

As someone who plays street fighter 2 on a d-pad i wouldnt dream of playing pes09 with the d-pad as it completely limits your play and would more likely cause RSI.

Cant you see that the restrictive movement and automated gameplay in PES is symtematic of 8-axis movement and d-pad control.

Until konami switch to true analog control not d-pad 8-axis movement mapped to the thumbstick PES will never evolve nor will your football skills.

Its just one of those things once you force people to switch to a more intuitive control set-up they will warm to its merits as we all did when analog control first hit gaming as it revoltionised player physical input in a game.

What are you afraid of that you will actually have more control is this not a good thing. How can you expect to pass a ball round the pitch on a 360 degree plain with a d-pad it just doesnt work.

Of course PES feels better with the d-pad as does mario world on the SNES but mario 64 and galaxies doesnt because it uses a 360 degree plain of movement.

Its not that you cant control the game with analog the thumbstick its because you are to heavy handed and dont have soft hands otherwise you would appreciate the superiority of analog control.

  142. anon Says:

Do you think people want a greater axis of movement and passing just because it sounds good,no! there intelligent enough and have played PES long enough to realise its what is making the game flat and one dimensional to play.

Once fifa hits you will see for yourselfs and will be the first people to jump ship as you will be made fully aware of its merits over 8-axis and 2d d-pad control.

I still think 360 movement and passing is going to be implemented into pes2010.

  143. GNX Says:

I dont care if its 360 or not..

Just dont disable the D-Pad. Of this ever gets implemented.

Also 360 movement will never make it to the ps3 becuz the sticks on a (dual shock or whatever controller of the ps3 is:

    1. Not responsive nor accurate..

    2. Placed on an akward and painfull place (D-Pad is less painfull for your thumb. – close to your palm – u can rest your thump on it)

    3. D-Pad has 8 way direction choice. (ps3) -> (Copy Sega’s D-Pad and 16 will be possible –> Google Sega 16 bit controller) Fifa 08 slow responce was beginning of trying to inplement 360 movement..

  144. GNX Says:

The distance on a analoge stick is (left to right) further away from each other then a D-Pad. Hence why D-Pad players have the advantage when dribbling. And less fail rates in wanting to turn to the right side.)

I understand that Xbox users where forced to use the stick on that horrible controller. But dont rape the ps3 users to use it to…

Only way i see it comming is when Ps3 releases a 360 D-Pad.

Thats the only way.. I dont hate 360 movement i welcome it.. but dont u force me in playing analoge.. it will not work.(i speak of experience with some games where D-Pad has the advantage.)

  145. anon Says:

but when using the d-pad on the ps3 you are hitting buttons theres no play with your movement your just balancing the ball and player between eight points of movement. You cant really hold a direction or turn into the ball your always having to play in a strait line or doubling up any of the four points to move or pass at a 45 degree angle.

  146. RFC-CHAMPS-09 Says:

I dont agree the majority of pes fans use the D – Pad , Everyone i know all use the left anolouge stick. Alot on here use the d pad but that by no means the majority do …thats only your opinion!

I still cant figure out how fifa can have Anfield, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge , The emirites, Wembly , while Pes only has Wembly (for 09) as a british stadium.

I think this year its only Anfield thats being added? the whole look of the game would be better if offical stadiums were used dont you think?

  147. TREAT ME!!! Says:

Well from what I read, I feel prety optimistic. But then again I was the same last year.

Without sounding like too much of an @$$ licker, I fully agree and back a majority of your ideas going forward. I believe you are 100% correct in context to the opinion of goalkeepers playing a more integral part in the game, as being a Liverpool fan, I know that Reina makes an integral part to the way our team attacks. So this emphasis being infiltrated into the game would be fantastic. I also hope your correct in determining that over the next couple of months, the player animations will be greatly improved. I don;t think a quick brush up in these areas is required. A complete overhaul would be needed for me to feel satisfied as PES2009 really didn;t cut it for me.

There is alot of expectations resting on Konamis shoulders this year & I hope, aswell as most of the real PES army will, that they do not fail !AGAIN!.

People have there comfort blankets and are blind to change and to the benefits that change brings, even DD seems pissed of that its still 8-way.

Im sure if i switched to the d-pad i would find it hard at first but would soon adjust as they would if full analog control and 360 degree movement was incorporated into pes2010.

Enjoyed your comments other the last week and like your forward thinking mindset much like mine.

Agree about the stadiums i doubt we will have more then a licensed old trafford and anfield in pes2010 this year.

Hold on to some hope though bud its still early days we may yet still be suprised at some wholesale changes to the movement and passing system.

Just played an hour of Fifa09 followed by an hour of PES09 on PS3. Afraid to say it but PES plays like a game that you would find down at the arcades. The ball sticks to your feet (a bit like a ball on a string), the animations of the players are poor, the off the ball runs by team mates are non existent, the ball goes to a player on your team with practically EVERY pass and the crowd chants gave me a headache!!

All you booboys out there that think Fifa09 is rubbish I now know why; because its too hard for you!! Having owned both games since release it has literally taken me 10mths to finally appreciate how good a game Fifa and how much better it is compared to PES.

Following the poor effort konami have shown now compared to all of the interviews with the producers of Fifa (in the links on this thread) and steps forward they seem to be making there is only one clear choice this year Fifa10.

And to all those that disagree, shout out and I’ll give you 50p to play Virtua Striker down the arcades as thats essentially all PES is now.

  155. Dave O Says:

Suggestion (I’ll post this in the suggestion’s area too):

    “22 degree movement with a 4 way D pad”

With regards to the recent news from DD’s review about PES 2010 dribbling:

When running with the ball from left to right, pressing up (90 degrees) will result in your player only moving 45 degrees.

I think this is a brilliant move by Konami, but I want to add to it, assuming it has not already been done:

One of the problems PES developers face is the problem of movement –> 8, 16, 32, 360… (a hot topic obviously).

The only options seem to be 8 way on the D pad (limits of the console controllers, with the exception of the new Microsoft Xbox 360 controller, which isn’t even available in all countries) or 360 degree movement on the analog stick (which, regardless of what some people think, not all PES fans would be happy with).

Note that, as explained by GNX, 16 way movement on the D Pad is not actually possible, since the PS3 actually only has 4 axis’ of movement, out of which 8 are interpolated.

    However…

One possibility would be to allow 22 degree movements (effectively 16 way) under only certain conditions, thus adding a bit to the confines of 8 way movement. All that would need to be done would be to say that when a player is running if the player pushes their controller at a 45 degree angle the player will only move 22 degrees. This would be a small thing, but it would add one more possible direction a player could move, and I think it’s an intuitive extension of the 90=45 degree when running rule they already have in place for 2010 (and it would help simulate the effect that you feel when you are running with the ball). It would be particularly effective when one-on-one with the keeper if you want to create the best possible angle (in some cases 45 is too far and straight on is not enough). It would also help create the illusion that players can “curve their runs,” especially when running with the ball on the wings, and it would be nice for setting up a cross as well (45 is often too much, especially when close to the touch line).

I would also suggest that players can do this from a stand-still, meaning that in order to move at 22 degree when not running all you need to do is tap the run button and the D pad at 45 degrees when you make your move.

This might sound strange, but I think it’s something which could become quite intuitive if you get used to it.

PS – It’s only a suggestion, so please don’t read into it too much and get excited. As I’ve explained upteen times already I’m not against 360 on the analog, but I do see the advantages which the D Pad has. I’m surpised at how big of a deal this has become, espcially since nobody has played either game yet, and I’m also surspised that nobody in the strictly pro-analog camp hasn’t at least made a small admittance that the D Pad has it’s advantages (I haven’t even heard an attempt at a response to the arguments made in favour of the D Pad, including responsiveness + precision vs accuracy. Those who think the Analog stick is the be all and end all seem to just continue to ignore these facts as if they don’t exist).

So really what these 160 odd comments boil down to is the argument of the D Pad and the Stick, Konami dont want to move because it will Rile some gamers….Its all about taking some chances , and lets face it Konami have not taken any chances in 3 years.
What will all the D-Pad people think if Fifa does show its early promise and the 360 ovement makes it the greatest football sim ever? will you then lighten to the anolouge stick? If not then You lot are holding Pes back from making the leap it needs.

Like dopecoil says it takes some time to get used to the new controls we all have had to do it at some point for various titles, just give it a try. I play just as well on the stick as i have ever done on the Ps1 or 2.

I believe PES will make the change at some point but who knows when, i just hope its sooner rather than later …because if fifa run away with it for 2 years running it will be heavily felt at konami.

  163. Dave O Says:

@GNX – I play on the 360 with the D Pad. It’s pretty good actually. Mouch more robust than the PS2 controllers were too (I ruined at least 4 PS2 controllers when playing PES on my PS2 back in the day due to shoulder buttons breaking – not sure if the PS3 has this problem too).

  164. Ultimate Says:

I play on the D-pad on 360 too.

What are you going on about?? Analogue Users suck because they don’t use the D-Pad?? Really?

You cannot run in a straight line with the anlogue?? Really?

That tells me all I need to know… you have no idea about how good and accurate the Analogue can be. But hey, I guess you know better than most of us noobs.

    Also @ anon, Post 154

So, I do not like FIFA09 because it is too hard for me?? Dude grow up, FIFA09 is serously flawed and overrated. I’m not even going to waste my time going through all the massive flaws.

By the way, I’m very good at it, I’m exceptionally good at Tricks -AND- I find the game boring and repetitive, as well as very unrealistic. Nothing I would call a proper simulation.

It’s funny how some people tend to express opinions like if they were facts. Myself included.

  169. Dopecoil Says:

hate to break it to you people but the longer we have 8-axis movement the longer we will have all the non cosmetic problems that we have had in PES for ten years.

All these little technical fixes that weve all been crying out for are brought about by PES using 8-axis movement.

You think its bad now you wait until the tactical slider and card system hits if pes2010 is in 8-axis.

Thats why i cant see pes2010 using 8-axis,konami are definetly holding something back all this new stuff is to advanced for a 8-axis movement system.

I bet if DD was really honest he would tell you that his four hours with pes10 throw up some quite strange ai events and physics problems(collision detection).

the old iss series in my opinion was the greatest series of football games to ever be on a console, the way you could score goals was limitless from curling 25yard screamers(two much in iss64) but spot on in 2000, to scruffy tap ins and headers at the far post from a spot on cross, corners were great, free kicks were great, animation and gameplay was fantastic. the perfect pes would be that gameplay(slightly slower place) with better graphics, improved commentary(crap even in the old days, who remembers oh he slipped on the wet pitch) then we will have a game. i have both pes 2009 and fifa 2009, and i hardly play either coz they are both not up to scratch

what makes it worse is the gameplay of ISS 2000 and perfect striker3 still hasnt been bettered in all these years such a waste of a great game and game engine it was flawless.

Even if you don’t like FIFA’s style, you can’t deny that the series is now far superior to earlier FIFA titles. PES hasn’t progressed this gen. It’s like Konami are taking us the fans forgranted. Whilst EA have been listening to the fans including PES fans on how to improve it’s titles, Konami don’t seem to care about the fans’ views.

As much as I love PES, I can’t justify paying full RRP in these tough financial times when Konami have disapointed and broken promises for the past few seasons.

    To DD..
From your opinion… is 50% PES2010 > FIFA09? cause I found that FIFA09 is much harder to master than PES 2009, and I just played FIFA after reading your review on FIFA09 previously and enjoying it till now..

    To Konami..
Please provide 2 option for the controller, since everybody want to play in their own way.. and evolution in your game doesn’t mean that a drastic change that leave the D-Pad player behind.. So the option should be

    8 way – D-Pad
16 way (please be fair to KONAMI) – Analogue….

So everybody will enjoy the game as they want it to be…

Agrre with you on the improvement suggestion must be as another 50% improvement of the game…
Please guys feeling to win the ball with precise timing and positioning during air ball and throw in is what we all miss in PES series… I want more manual control over my player with the PES realistic gameplay..

Thanks DD for your review and honest feedback to Konami…. Hope they realize graphic polishing doesn’t blind our judgment on other aspect of the game that need to be improved..

do really so many people still use the D-pad to play PES? I have played PES series for the last 10 years now and since the analogue controllers came out, I have never used nor have seen anyone using the d-pad.
I use the analogue left stick, to me there’s no comparison with the pad, not even close. And I consider myself pretty good at the game. No offense to d-pad users, but if you are so concerned about running a straight line, that is arcade style. By the way, you can do that with the analogue stick as well, never had a problem with that.

Reagarding PES2010, as many of you, I can’t wait for the game to be released, at least to give it a shot.
I enjoy the current PES2009, even though there are plenty of flaws, as in every game we will always find. Hopefully Konami will fix the major ones, that you all have extensively listed in previous messages.

Going back to PES09, what’s the deal with not being able to play a Cup with an random number of players anylonger? I remember until 2 years ago we used to be able set up such beautiful tournaments (group stage then elimination rounds – International Cup mode I think it was) with any number of players available. Those were some spectacular Cups. Why did Konami take that out? That was probably the best part of the game that would make me and friends get together to play.

Also, why did they take out the only tournmanet mode online (even though not great, it was still something)? Now you can only play single games, which sucks and gets old after a while. Game is still fun to play, don’t get me wrong, however…
Overall the game is great as it is, enjoyable, but to appeal some people back they should really get some tournaments going online, like Champions League or World Cup modes where up to 32 players can join. Also, eliminating the lag issues would be great, even though I have seen much less of that since upgrading Intenet speed to 16 mg.

Konami, get your act together with the online modes!
Who cares about the improved graphics, players faces etc. That is great if they improve, but not fondamental to the game appeal.

Regards to Fifa, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to buy one of those, it just doesn’t cut it for me. I have also seen some videos of Fifa09 on the internet, what’s the matter with the ball floating that way, and when you score the ball stays on the net for like a second before falling on the ground. That is just very strange to me…

Come on Konami, get it right this time! Good luck

I’m surprised at the reactions of alot of people here. “Baby steps…not leaps forward…”

Well, the actual core gameplay of PES has always been extremely good. In my opinion the new TACTICS and CARD system ARE a giant leap forward. I cannot begin to tell you how much PES games have frustrated me with players neglecting to make runs off the ball or half backs coming out of position when they shouldn’t. It fills me with utter joy to see those problems rectified, which in my view were some of the very biggest in the series.

Yes, 8-Way movement is a bit of a shame, but I don’t see it as a majorly big deal. I never felt particularly restricted with 8-Way movement in earlier games, why should it matter to me now? If online works well and they don’t put so much emphasis on that stupid momentum system, this could be brilliant.

I just don’t see how such a giant leap forward in AI and team strategy can be considered a “baby step”. It’s a huge, important leap forward.

Why should i give them the benefit of the doubt, what have they gave me in the past 2 years? i have game them about 85 quid and they have gave me broken unfinished games.

8 way was the PS2 way for god sakes we are now into the 3rd year of the PS3 a system light years ahead of the PS2 and still its the same crappy animations , same 8 way movement and same online lag rubbish.
Fifa can provide a 10v10 online with no lag and Konami cant even give a 1v1 with no teleporting….Thats why i dont buy all the crap they feed us anymore.

How many other companies would get away with bringing out 2 unfinished crap games in a row? Konami are very lucky and if PES10 turns out to be the same as the last 2 then they are in deep trouble and its completely deserved!

    RFC-CHAMPS-09-184

Your right seabass himself stated that they where going to make massive improvements to player physical control on the pitch and the animation system.

Its another cop out this year why konami dont just update ISS 2000 with all that worked from pes5 i dont no,pes5 pace and simulated tempo,ISS sublime fluid 32 way control and passing and deep control mechanics and manual through ball and one-two system.

    2goodfootygamesthisyearplease

Your a idiot even a lower league side pro can pass well and turn quickly.

Real pros dont move and pass in 8-axis all people are asking for is the level of animation that real footballers exhibit and a modern 360 degree movement and passing system, konami where doing this stuff back on the n64 in the late ninties and we had a much more fluid unrestrictive game that was ligth years ahead of PES in gameplay and control.

The graphics are all that are better now even the animation sucks as does the automated control.

I remember how in the japanese version of ISS you could use a second division side and although they lacked flair players you could still get the ball down and pass it and shoot as in real life unlike the totally unrealistic team you start with in the masterleague,no teams that bad even a pub side.

I would rather have a rock solid cpu and tight player control and movement rather then 8-axis and contrived cheap gameplay.

  190. Dopecoil Says:

    2goodfootygamesthisyearplease

also the great thing with ISS it was proper mo-capping of the players, ball, nets, ref, lineman and because you had 32 way movement via the thumbstick you beat the rock solid cpu but making defenders off balance(jenga as the brazillians call it) with your forwards or by a well placed through ball to gain a yard or by creating pockets of space to buy you sometime to square up a shot, even crosses you could place pixel perfectly as well as long balls with a bit of backspin.

Dont you want this back again rather then a on rails football game that is broken?

  191. Dunc Says:

“If you can afford to keep the button pressed for longer before getting shut down by defenders, then you should be able to get more powerful shots on goal”

This would be the most ridiculous thing to do. In football you can still smash a ball hard if you are under pressure. How else would people suffer such crippling nut shots? I’m sure everyone here who has actually played football has had their ass stung blocking a shot from point blank range. The only thing closing down from defenders should affect is accuracy. If it affected shot power as well the game would be ruined.

Other than that, good article, enjoyed the read.

(First, English is not my home-language, so please be patient with any spelling or grammar misstakes)

I notice almost a 100% focus on the in-game action, movement, control and graphics. For sure thats important and should be developed, but lets not forget the fact that thoose things arent what made PES so great in the first place. I´m talking about the whole feeling of the game that made PES such a success. What about the Masterleague wich for me (and to many other that loves fotball) makes the game alive? Among other things the genious playerdevelopment, that made me fall for PES and the feeling it gives to the game, is just one part of it. What about adding a little more relations between the different leagues during the Masterleague. More statistics, more of historical facts than just goals and assists made the last season! EA-sports is actually doing this better, and with wery little effort put into it that`s a part of the game thay make a hole lot better!

So, what about puting some energy on developing the whole Masterleague?!

The first and most simple fact why we should demand an improvment on this is that it`s so easy done. Unlike in-game control, graphics and other things; developing the area around the match-scene takes less space, computerpower and programing. What about this in PES10, Dougiedonut?

KONAMIS MAJOR A DEVELOPMENT TEAM PIONEERED 360 DEGREE MOVEMENT(32-AXIS)WITH PERFECT STRIKER IN JAPAN ON THE N64 OR ISS64 IN THE WEST IN 1996.

FIFA HAS ALWAYS BEEN 8-AXIS THAT IS WHY KONAMI COPIED THIS BACKWARDS MOVMENT AND PASSING SYSTEM WHEN THEY CREATED PES.

  208. Dopecoil Says:

    Pat-204

    ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!

  209. Dave O Says:

The earlier Fifa games (before they started to copy Winning Eleven) had movement that was maybe not 360, but a lot more skatey/floaty like Major A’s earlier games. That was the norm really until WE/PES introduced 8 way.

Not that it really matters whatsoever, and neither do throw ins. Petty stuff really. I mean, with the throw ins I understand that it is unrealistic, but if they took away the barriers, then you would see some really unrealistic stuff happening. Throw ins are really no big deal anyway, hopefully they can tweak them a bit to make them more realistic and fun this year, but it can’t be a top priority…

  210. Dopecoil Says:

Honestly guys do you really think konami have gone to all the trouble of creating graphics almost at the level of a live broadcast without making the movement and passing a least 16-axis or 32-axis.

They know what EA have got with fifa10 and they know that all EA have done is recycle there own concept from the ISS series.

Konami have had japanese pros doing mo-cap sessions at there japanese HQ since oct08 weekly, plus a session with messi and freestylists back in may.

They have something new something that is going to revolutionise the football genre.

Everything i read in the previews is building to this the way the they have implemented almost real tactical stratergies and the card system.

How can everything else be so advanced but the movement system and passing system still be 8-axis.

The reason they are holding this back is becuase they know fifa10 will be finished by august and they dont want EA or the press to see what they have until fifa has gone gold and to print.

Theres know way pes2010 will even be playable with the current 8-axis system thats why all the press are currently dissapointed with the 50% build.

Everything in pes2010 reminds me of perfect striker3 by konami but more advanced its just lacking that final ingredient.

  211. Dopecoil Says:

    dave o

Major a games where not skaty or floatie they used a system where by just moving the thumbstick allowed you to walk and move on a 360 degree plain pointing your passes or shots in 32 directions,if you wanted to angle your movements in 8-axis like PES you simply used gentle pushes of the dash button and the thumbstick in the required direction.

PES uses a automated version of this sytem that requires less skill by just moving the thumbstick and doesnt allow the 360 degree freedom of movement.

  212. Dopecoil Says:

    dave o

Konami could implement this system into pes2010 within 2 weeks all the need is animations of real pros walking with the ball which they have done.

This way PES will maintain the same feel that we all love but also give us the greater range of movement and passing PES so badly needs.

  213. Dopecoil Says:

    DAVE O

if i could bring you to my house dave i could show you me playing ISS exactly like PES just moving and passing in 8-axis then show you ISS walking, passing and shooting in 32-directions.

We need the best of both worlds not just one dimension to are play.

  214. Dopecoil Says:

When konami say there taking it back to there simulation roots it not the first PES they mean as that was half way up the tree, thee talking about ISS……….EVEN THE WATER BOTTLES ARE BACK BY THE GOALS WHICH YOU CAN KNOCK OVER WITH THE BALL.

  215. Dopecoil Says:

When you allow 32 way movement and passing it doesnt weaken the game it just fills in all the gaps in the current 8-axis system, you cant make the defence more solid and decrease the speed of the game and the users ability to have more time on the ball unless you increase the range of movement, thats why currently in the preview playtest people where struggling to score.

When the new animation set is added it will address the inbalance of 8-axis movement and the new tactical system.

The increased speed and running ability of the faster players in pes09 was to eleviate the restrictive 8-axis movement otherwise the game would of been unplayable.

  216. frost-06 Says:

i’ve been reading thru the various posts here and it took me this long to comment, now i see ppl here saying that pes 09 is better that fifa 09 and also that fifa 09 is massively flawed and that the flaws are too much to even point out, but tbh i think they cant point out those flaws bcuz there are, nt really any any major ones to point out. ask anyone who has played pes 09 about its flaws and they can point out maybe ten or more off the top of there heads and everyone i ask has the same complaints about pes just like me and judging from the post here so do most of u here. now i played pes 09 for most of this year bcuz since 2007 i havent plyed fifa since it was garbage back then but after getting annoyed with pes 2009 i decided to try fifa 09 and tbh i had and is still having more fun playing fifa 09 and so do my brothers and friends, we all used to play pes 09 and then we all tried fifa and never went back……dont get me wrong pes is my footie of choice but this year it just doesnt keep up with fifa i hope stuff can be different with 2010 but they still seem to have not fixed some of the little issues that made me turn to fifa this year so i hope they can resolve those issues by launch, this year IMO i didnt think that pes 09 allowed the better player to play that way because 2 player matches were too scripted for me to enjoy.. at times i thoroughly outplayed my friends and for whatever reason the a.i scripting just didnt want me to score and i know that its not becuz of a lack of ability to score on my part…. hell i remember beating my friends keeper and bcuz i know players in pes 2009 have a tendency boot the ball over the goal even from close range i made sure ni lined my player up perfectly with the goal and bearly tapped the shot and he still booted over the goal and to me things like that are inexcusable at least in fifa 09 when i make a brilliant play to get an opening for goal the player reward me accordingly by nicely tucking away the shot intelligently instead of trying to rip the nets apart from just in front of the goal with keeper beaten and all

  217. Dopecoil Says:

  219. Dopecoil Says:

Even in pes08-09s game engine there would be the option for konami to implement 32-way movement as 8-way movement works by covering 32 points it just does it in multiple points of 4 ie 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32.

This is why players appear to be skating but if you actually watch a real match this is how footballers move in a angled way with the ball the only difference with PES and real life is real footballers when they are walking with the ball or are stationery have 360 degree movement and passing.

This is why we need a similiar system to ISS where you can move on a 360 degree plain and pass but also have angled movements.

Its just a case of motion capturing this and adding it.

im sorry but ive read through alot of these comments and its annoying how stupid some people can be

ash7612: i cant believe how many fifa fanbots are in here talking about how great fifa is when the fact is that they steal all the great ideas from konami in the first place

    ^THANK YOU!^

even now there copying konami with the 360 degree movement which was on ISS. fifa has copied pes’s Advantage, free kick system(including quick free kick), Become a legend ( which was called “fantasia mode” which was released only in JAPAN LAST YEAR! plus pes already had a fixed mode), custom tactics and high speed menus they even copied pes’s unique control system for the Wii and implemented it on the pc version which they put no effort into whatsoever and i no for a fact that theres more than that so wouldnt it be wise for them to be a bit more secretive?

and for the ones complaining about 8 way control how would u know if there using it or not! are you designing the game its not like they’ve announced either one have they? and i bet some of you didnt even no about 360 degree movement until ea announced fifa would have it! and how about showing a little faith to konami and its workers who work their asses of with a game that u will ultimately buy anyway no matter wat u think or say on here. bloody hell!

and as for pes’s CARD system and sliders which are similar to fifa? well what goes around comes around

And as for licensing, im not sure if this is true, but ea’s contract with FIFA(not the game)runs out next year (somthing konami wouldnt pass up to take advantage of) and they may have to share licensing the konami, like i said im not sure but if this is true, but if it is lets just see who comes out on top when theres a level playing field (kind of – pes uefa licence)

  226. propessss Says:

if that is true r dude imagine if fifa lost all its licenses that will be intresting

  227. PES army Says:

hey guys, i’m a HUGE fan of the pes series. hell, i even gotta PES- tattoo in my arm. BUT, only ps2 and ps1 games. i cant believe how they manage to screw up everything that was so great in old pes games, like ball physics, animation. sure, the next-gen games look better but that’s it. compare the ball physics say pes 2009ps3 and pes 5/6 ps2 and you know what im talking about. in pes 2009 the ball is like a god damn magnet in your feet. anyway, my main point was, check out pes 2009 WII version but forget that crazy looking control system because you can play that game with a nintendo classic controller which is a similar to ps2 pad. and trust me when i say this: pes2009 in WII with the CLASSIC CONTROLLER is by far the best PES since pes5. the animations are so fluid and it doesn’t feel 8 directional movement at all. this is the first pes-game i’m actually using analogue sticks to play it because it’s so fluid and smooth. and it supports th widescreen as well and the camera wiew is much wider so you can basically see the hole pitch which gives you so much more. graphics looks like from ps2, but when you play it you’ll notice the difference instantly. try to find some youtube footage like pes2009 wii. and remember my friends if you try it, CLASSIC CONTROLLER! not that bloody pont and drag mess. bottom line: i honestly dont think that they can bring the old PES gameplay feeling back with these “next-gen” consoles, what i think, wii is gonna be a new ps2 and i’m hoping to see many more PES releases in that platform. and yes, i do own ps3 as well, haven’t played it till winter though. cheers fellas.

I am and always thought I would be a PES gamer for life. Ive owned almost every one. But this year, after reading the reviews and the responses, I have to say I think this year will be the first time I pick fifa up off the shelf.

And I know that alot of you will probebly hate me cause Im shocking you with this scary but real truth, but this game will not be what you want it to be.

All Konami talked about was stepping forward this year. And originally I thought this was gonna be the best most realistic soccer game ever because of all the hipe and publisity. But after all this all I have in my head is doubt. I doubt its not gonna be gitched up, I doubt theres not gonna be stupid invisible barriers, I doubt that this game will satisfy any true soccer fan trying to get the most realistic, best true to soccer feeling from this game (they dont even have real names of alot of teams and players).

And I get it if your mad at konami or me right now, I mean im mad at konami for all their lies and bullsh!t and at myself for telling you all this because Ive been a PES gamer forever but the truth is that this is all true and this is not gonna turn out the way we all hope.

I wish I was lieing but right now I can only wish not believe that I am.

Like I remeber back when PES fist came out and it had the coolest features, best control, and the greatest gameplay ever (no comp). But now all they did was try to out look fifa and thats not why Im a PES gamer.

I played the game when it didnt look that good (hell I still pick up the PES2007 for ps2 every now and again) but thats because of the game play. And if PES ever wants to do better then fifa they better stop feeding us this sh!t and do something with the game play, give us what you promised us. Give us a game that has the best gameplay and control, right now I dont give a F*ck if it looks like a 6 gig mario brothers I just want PES to be the way it was, when it was about giving us a realistic game to play not about graphics.

So please to all those guys at konami Im telling you right now that if you want me to buy PES2010 fix it up quick or the more resonable choice start working on fixing it up for PES2011 untill I see some more reviews closer to the release date when its almost done Im with fifa but I really hope something will change my mind.(Ill buy PES2011 forsure just for the love of PES fixed up or not, but I hope it is by then). So please and Ill say this one more time fix up the game cause I wanna be a PES gamer for life but if it sucks then I have no choice Ill buy fifa (but youll have to make me change my mind)

PES is the best in the world. Unbeatable.
But i still hope several things can show up through the development of the game. :P
In PES 2009, i seems to seeing the same referee most of the time. And when the team qualify to like European Tournament, the screen will shooting on referee first instead of shooting on the players.
The edit function of PES is simply fantastic.I have no problem on editing the emblems, Logo or the kit of the team, but i hope i can edit the League Logo as well.:P
And it would be excellent if can see the edited League Logo on the sleeve of the kit.
And on Master League, i hope i can put in more than 4 Leagues so that i can see more teams get involved in the European Tournament.
By the way, where’s the untuck function which used to have in previous PES. It looks cool to be untuck. haha.

  233. The new Says:

How can you still think PES is the best soccer game around. Yeah the graphics are pretty but thats not enough to make up for the gay glitches and horrible gameplay.

Look at the facts fifa is so far ahead of PES its gonna be very hard for PES to catch up with them. So just accept it and get fifa10

You cant tell anyone to get out of here propess , its a forum..grow up!

Some of us are not fifa fan boys , we are just football fans who want the closest thing to play each year and for the past 2 years tahts been Fifa ( every respectable game website agrees). Why they and i say what we say on here is simple, DD says that Konami are building relationships with websites like Pesgaming and looking at the way the fans (us) want it improved. So letting our frustrations out and letting Konami know that Fifa is way ahead should give them the kick up the arse they need to go out and create a bloody game we deserve!

2 years of rubbish is unaceptable….3 years will be the end!

We are not Fifafan boys and we are certainly not Peshaters
    we want our game back…simple!

Look at the facts fifa is so far ahead of PES its gonna be very hard for PES to catch up with them. So just accept it and get fifa10

Go on show me some facts i’ll wait.

you go on like fifa 09 was perfect, when it was actually FAR from it, it had some stupid flaws, so to say fifa is far ahead is laughable. Yeah i’ll admit it, for the past 2 years fifa has been on top but remind me how many years (before fifa 08) when pes was on top and fifa had to copy up..sorry i mean “catch up” to pes?

SO SHUT YOUR FACE AND GET OUT OF HERE

    R-dude

  241. R - dude Says:

some of you pesfans moan about the games gameplay so much, sometimes i dont blame konami for not listening because the fact is you dont no what you want! you complain that you dont care about graphics you just want good gameplay and yes this makes sense but to say tou want it to play like pes 5 & 6 and then complain about not going next gen or using a recycled game engine its ridiculous. why is it so hard to want a brand new pes? because the truth is how are pes meant to move on like fifa is if were STILL clinging to the past? THIS is the reason why fifa is on top!

I’ll be honest i dont want the new pes to play NOTHING like pes 5 & 6 i want a brand new experience which is TRULY next gen and true football simulation, i also want litte Byproducts that brings out its fun side like 66 and world cup stuff like that, i want konami to take risks because. you cant expect them to you the SAME experience year after year can you? if that does happen ill have the choice of never playing football games again or jumpiing on the fifa bandwagon. So how about we actually help Konami without mentioning the past?

And if you dont like it then sorry that just how i feel.

  242. acmilangr Says:

FIFA 09 is better game and much more realistic than PES 2009,

  243. RFC-CHAMPS-09 Says:

Fifa09 is a better game than Pes09 but thats not to say its not without problems itself. In fifa 9/10 times you stric a shot from distance it floats about like a baloon , the way the players run is cartoonish but the fact they have far more options available and a online function thats superb mean its better.

I dont think either game was groundbreaing this year just Pes was rotten and fifa was decent.
Lets face it we do not make things difficult for Konami (they get paid bucket loads to do this job) even i and posters like dopecoil ect seem to be on the same track, build the game around ISS everyone was in agreement that game was great to play…free movement (360 movement lots of tricks ect) …it was so satisfying to play.

Graphics are not important really ( we could say that for the PS2) but come on its next gen – any game that does not dazzle is a game thats not been taken to properly … with the 2 consoles there is no excuse for not having stunning enviroments and models. look at games like MGS4, FNR4, and many others it goes to show how games can look if developed correct.
The gameplay was tehre years ago….it cant be that hard to implement onto the new consoles can it?

I just wish some of the people on here were in Konami’s development team! so frustrating

  244. acmilangr Says:

    the players run is cartoonish
hahahaha, what about PES players? they are running like super mario!

  245. joe sausage Says:

fifa 10 player look like their out of ice age haha

  246. Italia Says:

message to Konami: please remember to bring back the option to change controller settings in Cup Mode. When you set up a Cup (International Cup for instance) we had the possibility of changing the controller setting, from CPU to Player 1 or 2 and viceversa. Why in the world did you take that option out? Makes no sense! Instead of improving what’s already there, you’re taking important options away from the game, to no benefit to anyone.

And I cannot stress enough the fact that you need to work on online modes! The current online section is a joke!

Do something about it, and bring some form of tournaments online! It’s a must.

Also, no more automatic tackling and shooting.
    More control to the goalkeeper.
Regarding the invisible barriers, some of those need to stay in place, to respect the rules of the game. But the way free kicks and throw ins are executed right now is just unreal, why does the player taking a free kick freeze after taking the shot? In real football players take the shot and then can take the rebound as well if it hits the wall. That should be the same in PES.

  247. Taylan Says:

can someone please just copy this whole thread and send it to em. friggin useless game makers. last time i swear! if this game is no good, they can shove it where it fits!

  248. mike becks Says:

What I realise about fifa fans is a alot of them where pro evo fans converted to fifa ,so if some gets my point on this forum .They will see when konami pull it off coz people there is still master league being revamped.

  249. mike becks Says:

People need to understand that are ideas are not being listened by konami the way we would want.

firstly my grip with konami is that its common sense some of the things konami aren’t doing like scupturing the player models so they don’t look like robots ,RFC-champ i totally agree you , now if you worked at konami what is first thing that you change.

I would change the running why dont they motion capture players running . C it just makes sence , I like pro evo soccer but i dont like all of it . Bad decisions where made konami, i what a good game so do all of pes fans ,

Konami have to listen to us but at the same time use their own Inititive as to what would be a superb footy game and what would be a average one . Don’t get me wrong i was playing PES 06 the other day and it soooooo disconnected Players are stiff and gameplay is so watered down compared to PES 09

  252. The Concept of PES2010 Says:

The behind the scenes footage gave us a massive insight into how PES 2010 is shaping up, and just how huge the team is right now. Like Aki Saito said (and something we’ve hinted at previously) the PES team entered the new studio 2 years ago, and embarked on a mission to take the series back to its glory days. All buildings are built upon a solid foundation, and with Seabass confirming that player representation was a key element in the forthcoming game, it was music to years.

It was great to see Seabass in general, if I’m honest. More serious, less amused, and in many ways more aware of the task ahead. It was a tactical decision to take him out of the ‘firing-line’, with fans hurling a magnitude of abuse at a man who created an incredible football series. One thing I’ve realised since starting this blog, is that fans can be as fickle as they are misinformed, and to blame one solitary person for the mishaps on nextgen is unfounded. Konami’s struggles on the new platforms have eased, and with years gone by working with the hardware, perhaps its now we see Seabass utilize the tech to its maximum capacity.

And it was towards the end of the video that got me excited. When asked about the basic concept, Seabass replied with…well you can see it the header. I my opinion, one of the biggest contributing factors that gave PES that untouchable and incredible feel was the priority on the work going into player representation. For Messi to play like Messi, for Torres to finish like Torres, and for the like of Xavi to pass and move like Xavi. It’s something we take for granted, but something that has gone missing over the past few years. A few months ago I wrote a piece on how the PES series has lacked that bit of TLC, never feeling as polished or as loved as the PS2 versions. It seems someone has go that fire back, and with it a returning intent to make sure every little thing is spot on.

  253. Rob Says:

Took me a while to get used to the analogue controller, but, get used to it I did. Now I wouldn’t dream of using the d-pad again FOR ANY GAME. I’ve watched the links for perfect striker and all I can say is thank god for PES. I have slagged PES off but those links remind me how good it actually is. I will be buying PES10 as (Apart fron 2008)I have enjoyed the series.

  254. Im not anonymous Says:

People who say FIFA 09 is much better than PES must be easily pleased. Sure, it has less bugs/glitches than PES 2009, but are either of these games any good? I dont think they are. They are both average games, with FIFA being the lesser of the two ‘evils’. Having said that, while FIFA is the more ‘complete’ game, it is PES which offers the most playability. I own both games, and a was bored od FIFA way before i was bored of PES. In fact, im not bored of PES as i still play now. I think the sliders and cards systems in PES will make teams play more ‘true’ to their real style, and should give us the ability to build a team and gameplan to suit each game we play. While the graphics do look nice, there is one pic of Messi holding his arms in the air in celebraion which doesnt look as good as the other pics we have seen – i hope that this is not the only true representation of the in game graphics…

We need konami to focus on the gameplay and add much more depth to the master league. It would be nice for the old training mode to return (free kick, dribbling etc) and also the little touches such as individual player animations, wider ranges of boots, ronaldo/torres style ankle tape, range of gloves/ edit options will round the game off and add individuality to each player or team used.

I am a long time PES fan, but i have owned FIFA titles down the years too. Frankly i think it is pathetic for PES/FIFA fan boys to argue over which game is best and to insult the other party. They are games. Grow up. Both series’ have their own strentghs and weaknesses.

Lets see which is best whis time round…Hopefully PES ;)

(like short goal kicks always going to the nearest player) – do you think these kind of minor things will be taken care of?

I hope those things are fixed, but for me the whole point of playing the game at 50% was to get a feel for the game and appreciate the changes that have been made. We played the base for what it to come.

  264. Dopecoil Says:

Let me put it to you this way ISS had pressure sensitive shooting, short passing, long passing, headers, through passing, penalties.

Coupled with the 360 degree movement and passing, seamless animation, visible linesman, visible referees, tricks, looping headers, manual through ball, manual one-twos,underarm and overarm manual goalkeeper throws, manual goal kicks that you could place,a dedicated trap button and intuitive deep control setup this was and still is the benchmark of how to make and execute a football game.

The fact that all we have had for the last ten years is a basic restrictive 8-axis stripped down clone of ISS that has only improved the short pass and graphics(not animation)but taken away everything else in favour of automatic button presses a quick arcady gameplay is a crime against gaming.

We could have a wonder game now people if konami would just take stock of all these simple elements that they created and implement them into PES2010.

Pes has never been up to scratch and this is a pes master talking with tens years of experience of pes and 9 months mastery of pes09.

Konami where turning out the ISS series on 16mb hardware with motion capturing of players, the ball and nets on 80mb cartridges that still play brilliantly and are more complex then pes09.

  265. Amateur Says:

    @ Dopecoil

I Think it’s pretty clear that Konami sold-out years ago… PES10 should give us further indication of it.

As for PES5 and PES6… I used to think they were great games, but that was 4 years ago. I fail to understand how Konami has (essentially) done nothing for the past 4 to 5 years.

You see, EA Sports doesn’t haves this problem because FIFA was utter rubbish for many years. On the other hand with Konami, we have the ISS games and the old PES games… we can see that Konami have sold out.

How else can you explain PES08 and PES09. There’s no other explanation for their lack of innovation. Hopefully PES10 will be a change in direction.

Awesome post and a nice read!

After reading this several times, the first time I almost cried, I can’t believe we are not getting full 360′ controls. Like the author said, this sounds like a small leap forward, I can’t believe they have used (from the looks of it anyway) so much time improving the graphics, that should be the last thing on the list. I was getting excited hearing the comments coming from Konami but after reading this article, I can’t help but feel disappointed and if the leap from FIFA 08 to 09 is anything to go bye, I think this year may see actual purchase my first copy of FIFA since ‘96.

A great post m8, but sad news overall :(

This is the first time I leave a comment here. Hornestly, at last I give up on PES, well you know I have been playing it since SFC (it is no called PES in those days). Anyway, in the recent years I really saw FIFA catching up. At last I did it last year, stop buying a copy of PES2009 hope to give them a wake up call, PES2009 is a totally joke campared to what FIFA09 deliver. Even you might say FIFA is over weighted, but I do not really care about the rating? It is EA’s determination and imporvement that make me willing to buy a copy of FIFA.
I want PES to success, but seems after a year, they since not wake up yet. PES2010 look good, but not good enough. Until they can show me that they care about our comment and try to re-do the PES with a whole new engine and improved game play, sorry I am not going to buy a copy of PES. It is just irrational to support them when they do not care about their customers.

I can’t believe that after 3 years, with this “engine”,Konami can’t get a good result…If they can’t be developing with this technology they have to figure another engine…

I am a Pro Evolution Soccer gamer for a long-long
time and i waited something more than just an updated in graphics game…

I don’t care if the demo is at 50% or 70%…The gameplay is the same and is going to be boring after 2-3 months…

Konami developers don’t look to hear-read our opinions about their creations…We are the only ones that we care to play soccer without financial purposes…
