What a fantastic week of news and coverage from Gamescon we’ve had. Not only did we get news of key new additions to PES such as 360 control and advanced keeper control, but people got to play a Gamescon cut of code of the game. General feedback from the event seems to be pretty positive, but I’d like to clear up some confusion people have with the version of the demo.
Firstly, the version that will have been prepped for Gamescon will have been taken from a specific point in development, and then cleaned up seperately for the event itself. In the meantime, PES2010 development has continued. So by the time the demo was unveiled, the latest stage of development is in fact further along the road. So the people complaining about the game not being particularly advanced need to understand this.
Secondly, I recall seeing a comment from someone complaining about why FIFA’s playable version was more complete than the PES version. The answer to that one is quite simple – both games have different release schedules, hence are at different stages in development. PES2010 will be released a good 2 to 3 weeks after FIFA10 hits the street.
I’d like to say that I’m sorry if we were not passing on news during the event, as did PESFan and WENB, but I had a very busy week at work (Sods law it would happen during Gamescon week!), and I didn’t see much value in regurgitating news already available that most of you will have seen on those sites already anyway.
Unfortunately due to WordPress limitations I’ve been unable to show screenshots of the new game covers for the PS3 and 360. If anyone is a whizz with picture compression, then please give me a shout, I’d appreciate it very much.
I remember the feedback to my playtest a while back, where many people shared my disappointment with us not having 360 control. Since then, Konami have amazed us with news that they’ve incorporated the functionality into the game. I’d appreciate some feedback to what you think of this news.
I’d also like to let you guys know that PESGaming.com have been invited for another playtest due to take place tomorrow. Unfortunately Dan is unable to join me for the session, but after much persuasion, I was able to convince Francis to join me. It took 0.133 seconds for Francis to agree.
So you should benefit from having two seperate impressions of the game, which is always a good thing. I believe the version we will be playing will be much further ahead than Gamescon code, so we should be able to form stronger opinions on where the game is.
I plan on using the weekend to put my thoughts together for my write up, as I don’t want to rush it. I know how important the playtest review will be to many of you, and so I want to try to give a comprehensive review of it. I will look to publish my review probably either on Sunday night or Monday next week, with a view to hold a Q&A session during next weeks article, so you get the opportunity to clear up any issues you may have with the review.
For now, I’d appreciate your thoughts on the Gamescon videos you’ve seen, and if you have any specific questions on areas in the game you’d like me to have a look at for you, then feel free to tell me now. I’d like you guys to partake in this opportunity we have to look at the game.
Thanks for reading

There’s only one word to describe PES and that is satisfying, even with all it’s faults..you just don’t get that from FIFA
Can someone check if the horrible ball sound that was in 09 has gone and the annoying tippy tappy dribbling sound.
T.J go away with your boring stats. you already posted them in the other blog on here, no need to keep on.
Have you seen the drivvel expressed by Adam on WENB. He said the same last year about PES 09 and look how that ended up. The positivity of that site sickens me. Its great we have such a negative site.
Anyway the article from WENB…
“No doubt about it, I missed the hell out of PES 2010. Not being able to play the game for 5 days was pretty bad for me, especially as my trip to Milan was heavily involved with football activity.
Being back, much has happened while I was away. I thought I’d talk about those things a little, and also give you guys an update on why all of a sudden PES has taken over my life again.
And for that you can credit my brother-in-law for bugging me like crazy to play some PES 2010 with him. It seems the vocal majority nod FIFA 09 over PES 2009, but not for this guy. After playing FIFA 09 consistently when it came out, the turn of the year saw him in love with PES 2009, thanks to the variety of ways to score, individuality and player appearance, and that PES style of gameplay.
I warned him that PES 2010 was different to PES 2009 in gameplay, and as soon as he started playing he was ooh-ing and ahhh-ing like an Eric Cantona fan club. From the shooting to the passing, from the graphics to player likeliness, he was incredibly happy. 4 hours later we were still playing, a PES session we’ve not experienced for what seems like an eternity.
And thats when it hit me, PES is back.
It’s not about re-done engines, high quality visuals and motion capturing nets – its about gameplay. PES hasn’t been this satisfying to play for a while, and its about freedom of movement and freedom of control thats brought back the magic – both things hallmarks of the PS2 games. While the passing isn’t free like in FIFA, the accuracy and speed of passes are back to their satisfying best. Same goes for shooting, with you feeling the ball is going where you are aiming. Small adjustments and improvements that have a massive effect on how the game plays out.
On top of that Konami and Seabass have added layers around the core to make PES 2010 an incredible package. The graphics are drop dead gorgeous, and with new colour filter and dynamic lighting it brings the game to life. The animations, or lack of, have been scrutinized by a lot of people, but there’s plenty there to get excited about. The 4 dribbling animations may seem limited, but it freshens up the movement and hammers home the individuality factor FIFA has yet to achieve with its far superior animation system. People like Messi and Ronaldo seem to move differently, as do the likes of Gattuso and Essien – similar players in their positions but behave and move very differently. Its so enjoyable to be able to dribble like Messi, score in a way he does in real life, then sit back and watch his signature celebration play out – with the incredibly accurate kits, player models and photo realistic face.
My stand out moment since back has been something that encapsulates all those things. Playing Milan vs Inter I played the ball out of defense to Pirlo, who picked out a Pato run on the right wing. As I controlled the ball I stepped inside, played a one-two with Huntelaar and found myself just outside the box with space. I pressed shoot and watched Pato side foot the ball into the top left-hand corner. As I celebrated enthusiastically I looked over to the screen and saw ‘the duck’ do his signature love-heart celebration, before getting swamped by the entire Milan team.
PES 2010 has been a slow burner, the last time I felt like this was when playing PES 3 for the first few times. The beauty of the game took a few games to sink in, and the same can be said this year.
I’ve also had many emails and pm’s from people asking about the Riot podcast, and if I agree with what was said. Opinions are opinions, and Riot is someone I have always respected and agreed with. Its also hard to dismiss his thoughts on FIFA 10 without playing the latest code from EA, but from his PES 2010 input and self admission he hasn’t spent that much time with the game, I feel he’s yet to get to the stage where PES starts to show its true colours.
In his analysis, many have felt Riot sent a message of doom, but I have to say I disagree. He bluntly spoke of his love for FIFA 10, but also said we have two great football games this year – whilst saying PES 2010 is much improved and different from PES 2009. Isn’t that what we want to hear?
As a PES fan, for me its more important for the game to finally step out of PES5/6’s shadow, and be regarded as the best PES game ever than to be FIFA 10’s conquerer. Whatever EA does and how well FIFA 10 is received won’t matter to the PES community, as if a game from Seabass and co is finally good enough to do away with PES 6 patches on PC and pack away your PS2 console, then we have a very special PES game indeed.”
guys, yh i get the idea, please can you stop nagging.
the only reason i posted them againwas coz it didnt run smoothly on the other post. I had already sed i hav stopped b4 why are guys keep going on.
i kno sum wise guy is gonna say we keep goin on coz u do or summit like that but pls for now, i hav stopped so PLEASE dont keep ranting on.
TJ stop talking
DD – My question, which has maybe already been answered, is with regards to 360 dribbling. Can you dribble more slowly/with shorter touches if you only push the analog stick partly forward?
Thanks, eh.
ahh yeh almost forgot, just a few questions :
1. have they sorted out the refs dishing out yellow cards like hot cakes?
2. have they sorted out through balls where they place the ball to the side of a player where theres a defender instead of placing it where there isnt?
3. (cant remember if some1 else mentioned this)keepers throwing to the nearest player which is very annyoing
4. since the barriers are gone, please tell me that the referee calls the oppostion to be 2 meters away from the ball thrower otherwise throw ins will be so fake and wont abide by the real rules of football
5.Do we get quick free quicks this time round (when we want it or when its necessary
6. have they underrated arsenal like everyone else does?
Players side-footed the ball frequently in PES2009 be it clearances or passing. It made for some awkward and unrealistic animations at times.
Dougie can you check if this is still prevalent in PES2010!
Thanks.
* with their right foot I mean. Even left footed players.
Dude, get them to do something for BAL! At least presentation wise.
Oh and please bring back the old “Manual” control, I hate PES switching players from me.
on wikipedia it says its got OLD TRAFFORD! (and all the stadiums WENB told us, good on them). it says that all of the stadiums apart from anfield have been comfired by screenshots but i havent seen any but of Anfield. if anybody has seen any (especially of the O.T.) please put a link on!!
PEACE.
T.J do more player stats . . . I love those player stats
all the games looks great to play on and im really excited im gonna different dimension of gameplay on different footy.
T.J even think about doing it and i’ll hunt you down and chop off your fingers!

LOL @ both posts from anonymous AKA “The Crock” & Rob
You’re both absolutely right, whilst it maybe mildly amusing the first couple of times, these ridiculous quotes end up annoying you and make PES look like a laughing stock next to FIFA! Here are a few more classic quotes from the PES duo including those all ready mentioned by the above posters (not all word for word but as best as I can recall) -
Champion quotes -
“Hold on to your seats this could be one heck of a ride”
“It promises to be pyrotechnic down there” – (granted sometimes when the ball pings between a few players it does sound like a firework going off!)
“One manager using vocabulary there other relying on crockery!”
“All ambulances are at the ready and all insurance policies have been checked”.
“the substitute is ready to come on but he looks tired, he was warming up before, maybe he’s done too much”
“And the unstoppable force in possession once again”
“I think the ol lino got that one right”
“Call that a tackle it was almost assault!”
“This will end in disappointment for one party and in a party for the other”
“Oh dear some right old pushing and shoving going on there, they’ll be getting their handbags out next!”
“Managers so often say to players treat the ball as a friend!” – (what you kick your mates do you)
Lawrenson quotes –
“When the ball came to him, he was like a cow in a field – he didn’t know what to do with it!”
“Calls himself a keeper? He couldn’t keep bees!”
“I’ve heard he’s having an operation to have his hands sewn back on..What a shtoomer that is!’
“My names Goff and I’m off… down to the touch line that is!”
“He probably said to them, look you know your rubbish just get out there and see what you can do!”
“Tell you what John, remind this fella don’t catch my wages coz he can’t, he’s absolutely hopeless. What a mistake. !”
“If you don’t buy a ticket you don’t win the raffle”
Oh and something about a prawn sandwich too!
@ T.J. for the few that are interested in all these stats why don’t you just post a link to them instead of clogging the comment pages with endless posts! Just say stats for Klose, Ribery, Benzema, Alonso, Gerrard, Messi etc. click the link

Simples!
I tried to post that link in the previous IWP but it was constantly awaiting moderation. This meant that no-one else could see my post.
P.s. Has T.J not realised that it is the same person complaining about his posts and they are changing their name.

Just turn the commentary off its a waste of time anyway, you dont have commentary at a live match.
Your playing a game not watching it on the telly.
Commentary is so pointless i cant beleive people still have it switched as its one of the most unrealistic things in a football game as our playing it not watching it.
I think commentary is necessary in a game it adds realism (when it’s done properly) and surely that’s what we are all striving for.
Played a demo of NBA2K and the crowd/commentary & graphics are stunning, everything is relevant & picture wise it’s as though Sky were broadcasting it, so come on Konami pull yer fingers out.
I agree, commentary and the crowd are big influencers in getting you involved with the game. Anyone that has played the PSP versions will tell you it’s SOOOOOO bad without commentary and poor crowd droning!
I think commentary adds to the game as although you right state dopecoil that we’re infact playing the game we are still playing it through the TV and thus need the sound and commentary to help draw focus to it. I can’t think of anything worse when i’m trying to play a game and there are people blabbering on in the background about complete different things. Certainly takes my enjoyment away.
I don’t understand why they still have league B with Team A, Team B etc. It should just be an option to add a team into League B so you would be able to add as many teams as you wish rather than being limited 18 and have players like player19b hanging about

Hello & fanx 4 da in4mativ info. Ha.
Cud u pleze find out
1)In addition 2 bringing back untucked shirts are they also bringing back the short socks kit style(such as hleb used to wear?)

4)Are there any new tricks/skills that are in this new build we wouldnt have previously seen or heard of? If so how many? What are they?
5) Have the national squad rosters finally been updated from pre euro 2008 squads. (If so is Nikola Kalinic finally in Croatia’s. AGEN PPPPLLLLLEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSEEEE!!!)
6)Finally what is the actual squad size of the national teams, ie. has it been restored to more than 23 as it was before the next gen offerings of pro evo. (Please confirm that club squads are still 32 players, OR MAYBE BIGGER. Let a man dream?)
Thank you very much 4 this opportunity PES gaming. Your the best!!!
@ 25
I totally agree…the commentary in pes2009 is s***!!!
It would be good if you could check up on the stadiums for ps3 version. im hoping for old trafford to be there this time. heard they had it on the ps2 version.
I dont undertand why in both Fifa and Pes stadiums like Ibrox and Celtic park are always missing.
These stadiums are bigger than most premiership and european stadia and are always left out.
You dont get a better atmosphere in a CL game than at Celtic Park or Ibrox imo.
Hope they are available in the next edition.
Playing as a goalkeeper…
Please explain the movement, buttons, cameras/views and how it works as I’m quite excited about being a keeper for the first time.
But 1 thing worries me.
The player camera is great in FIFA, but horrible in PES, almost gives you a seizure, the way it turns so too fast.
However this may be the only camera/view that could be used for the goalie, so please try to be the keeper using different cameras!
Thanks and cheers.
p.s.: to an earlier poster. yes, arsenal players are often not highly rated, but that is sometimes true. For example ManU’s first 11 cost them 170 mil. pounds, while Arsenal’s cost around 55 mil. pounds. Now, unless Arsene is a genious, it means that Arsenal are an excellent team, but mostly due to fantastic team play not individual skills, otherwise how come our players were brought for 3 times less than ManU???
i agree with the JOGFARVA’s comments there, plus can you edit online, because ive been banging on for ages on this blog about my super (THE GRASSHOPPER’S) witch me and some friends have and i want to be able to edit boots, hair, face, kit and accesseries to play online with friends (not on ranked obviously) just with a option to turn on in other match mode.
ps improving size of national squad to 32 is important cause then at least you could play with more national players online.
Arsenal Winger @ 78
just go on pesfan . com and read the latest + comments and you will understand more.
p.s.: to Arsenal Winger, your player cost 3 times less than united because you are 3 league positions behind them
The big problem with Arsenal’s ratings in PES in my opinion is that they don’t rate them as having the growth/potential they deserve (with some exceptions of course). Look at the history of his ability to bring in youth and develop them, and continuously! Given the track record, you’d think that players like Diaby, Denilson, Song, Gibbs, Wilshere, and Ramsey would have better growth curves simply because they play for Arsenal! I’m not saying they need to be over the top, but they are often poor. Players like RVP are under rated as well.
Another good example is Flamini, who was rated terribly in PES at first. To be honest, it was fair given how poorly he played in his first 3-4 seasons, but even he eventually became world class (arguably, before he moved to Milan, that is).
If manual GK means that u take control of the keeper and they will no longer dive at the first sign of a fake shot, does this mean you will have do dive urself (by pressing the required buttons+directions)? because if so this sounds like it will take forever to get used to.
or isit just a case of positioning the keeper in a better placed spot than the AI does? because if so this will cancle out alot of cheap goals when used correctly.
(lucky theres no more auto slide because atleast u can control the keeper in a 1-on-1 situation without worrying about the DF gettin himself a red card with a reckless talkle from behind) lol
Flamini? World class? Seriously?
He was world class until he left Arsenal.
post 84 agreed
That’s what I said! I think he may regain form eventually, but it seems unlikely. For that one year, plus a portion of the year before he left for Milan he was amazing though, truly world class in my opinion. No doubt about it at all.
“p.s.: to Arsenal Winger, your player cost 3 times less than
united because you are 3 league positions behind them”
What league are you on about? Fantasy football league?
Arsenal have maximum points from 2 games. 6 points.
10 goals in only two games.
Man Utd lost a game and they have also played an extra game so
Arsenal are above United.
“because you are 3 league positions behind them”
That’s Burnley not United.
Dumbass/
Meant Burnley are 3 positions behind Man Utd not Arsenal.
(at the time of writing this Arsenal have won ALL of their games.
Can’t get any more points unless you magically add some on top. With your twisted logic…….no no. You can’t do that!!
i do agree with what people say about the commentary, pes has never had good commentary fifas has always been better but i cant see why its so difficult there are plenty of commentators out there.. but they need to give them better things to say!
So not one PROPER or recent code gameplay video has emerged from Gamescom. How incredibly disappointing.
Biased Gooner, you’ve missed the point completely. He’s talking about the end of the last couple of seasons that the gunners have been 3 positions behind united.
Three games into the new season is a tad early to be saying who is better than whom don’t you think?
biased gooner – get a life mate…………this is a pes site, not a scummy gooner site…………gooners off here………..chelsea till i die
Dave O
you’re right about arsenal stats bieng highly underated in pes games since they lost the licence after pes 6.. In 2009 new castle had better team stats than arsenal its a wonder, how they made it into the top 4 never mind make the last 4 in europe (when New castle got relegated)..
Its nice to see dougie donut indirectly retracting his comments it was clear when he wrote his 1st play test post at 50% and judging the game so harshly then that he understood very little about game development..
I enjoy the winds of change dougie..look forward to reading your next post hopefully you’ll think twice about your next playtest post as it will be a clearer path to to what the final product will be but far from the finished article..
On WENB, the video of England vs. Germany, is the stadium they are playing at Old Trafford. I wonder this because during a replay it says ‘The Manchester United Experience’ on one of the adboards.
I think that everyone agrees that the commantery is awful, i mean, even motto and lawro could be better if they said realistic things and didnt get cheesy scripts to read off… There are plenty of good commentators out there, so why not use those…
@ Dopecoil’s comments about not needing commentary – you are watching the game, FIFA gives a realistic “real football” presentation with polished graphics from afar and good commantary (graphics are poor from close in), FIFA makes you feel like you are watching a game of football, whereas PES makes you feel like you are watching a football game… Maybe turn commentary off on BAL mode because then you are ‘playing the game’
