PES Matters 5th November 2009

It’s official.  I hate PES2010.  Yes you heard correctly, I hate it!
I am no longer playing any other game, so pretty much every other game in my collection is just gathering dust.  I’m looking to cash in Operation Flashpoint because I’m just not playing it.  I don’t even care about COD MW2.  Honestly!  For the first time in three years, I’m really enjoying PES.
I don’t feel like I’m playing a broken game, and really do enjoy the battles on the pitch.  I’m playing games which all so far feel very different from one another.  I don’t feel like I’m playing the same essential football match spread over different teams in battle.  My goals have been varied and rewarding, and yes I am very very happy with PES, in case you hadn’t guessed by now!
I’m now firmly addicted to the Master League mode.  It is consuming every spare minute that I can find away from my everyday home life.
I picked Team A or whatever they are called, from the set of teams that are available to create your own teams.  So all the player stats are very average.  I’ve already cut the squad by around a third, earning me a few million and have recruited some raw youngsters.  I set myself the goal of being a midtable team by the end of the season playing on Top Player, but currently find myself in fourth place with around a third of the season left to play.  So I’m in with a shout of winning the league, but I’d rather lose a few and avoid promotion so that I can focus on rebuilding my squad ready for next season.
What I’ve found from the January transfer window is that when I submitted bids for players, I didn’t get responses back until the end of the window.  This has got to be a major flaw with the transfer system since I found I hadn’t succeeded with some transfers and so was left short.  I will wait until the end of season transfer window to work out if I interpreted the system incorrectly, or whether there is an issue.  So I’d appreciate hearing from you guys if I’ve missed a trick, or whether we need to complain to Konami about it.
I have to say that I am a bit of a weird PES player in terms of the players that I use in games.  I won’t go for established talents, so I rarely play with the likes of Torres, Messi, Gerrard and many other top players.  I prefer to try to find promising youngsters and develop them over the years in Master League mode.  This means that a lot of my players are unable to pull off fancy tricks since their stats are pretty low, but I think that suits my style for now.  I have been struggling with pulling off tricks but am slowly improving in that department.  So my game concentrates on getting to know my team and play to their relatively low strengths.  It’s about clever passing and dribbling and shooting with me!
Talking about shooting, I have to say that I really do love the shooting system in the game.  I really find that I can place the ball where I choose to, and find that if I make mistakes with forwards, then it’s my fault.  I can accept that and learn from it.
For now that’s all I have to say since I’m still learning the game and want to reach a point where I feel like I’m in control of how I play before I take my battles online.  So far I’ve had mixed results online.  I’ve been experiencing lag in some games, but can clearly see my opponent’s connection is mostly red.  This leads to response lag which ruins the game.  I will make time to try some more comprehensive testing of the online system, but I would appreciate hearing from you guys out there about how you are finding it.
Is the online system working for you?  If like me you’re not totally happy with it, and do not suffer when playing other games online, then we need to make noises about it.  So please do leave comments.
But for now, Master League is the way forward for me!
Thanks for reading

all i know is that i TOTALLY wasted my money when i bought fifa 2008 when it came out…been playing PES6 before that for a while and thought id give fifa a go again since i supported them for years before pes6…

i ended up playing fifa 2008 a couple of times…in one player it seemed fun, especially the licences…but i had to go back to pes6 each and every time…Everytime i feel bored of PES, i just need to play one or two games of fifa just to realise how bad fifa is in comparison to PES…i end up enjoying PES again…

  2. emmex says:

the research ive done also gives me the impression that on PC especially, PES is far better than fifa…maybe thats why i feel such a huge difference in quality…cause i play only on pc…

  3. emmex says:

( i get the impression that PES is almost the same quality on most formats….whilst with fifa, pc is certainly not their best product )

    @147.

“Now if fifa REALLY attributed the time onto each player, it would be great…but they dont. Who wants to play with a white player when in real life he is black? Or with a black player when he is Chinese? PES has far more depth with the “few” teams they have…”

Does this explain why Stephen Ireland of Manchester City has a full head of hair in PES2010 when, in real life, and in FIFA10, he is in fact bald?

I’ve found that a very select few teams in PES2010 have realistic appearances whereas the rest have basically the same generic face models from PES2009 & 2008.

  5. emmex says:

    @ 154

I have seen mistakes on both sides regarding facial features especially….But the generic clones seem to be more regular in fifa…unless its just by luck that i pick teams that are like this

    (Pirates, Chiefs etc)

  6. emmex says:

    @ 154

What im getting at is that there is a definate advantage on PES’s side when it comes to individuality, especially on how the player plays and what “type” of player he is. Sure they dont have the bulk of players fifa has…but Henry in PES feels/plays more like Henry, than he would in Fifa

Even with less well known players like Benedict Vilakazi http://74.54.19.227/news/283/28369175.optim.jpg of South Africa who doesnt even make the team these days: In Pes he plays totally different to any other player ive seen in PES thus far. He is a very short player…PES bothered to capture his unique abilities. Fifa doesnt come close to this “uniqueness”. Yes even if Fifa captured only a few select players unique attributes, they still captured it better than fifa would…

Like i said before…feels like PES has “12 types”(or more) of players while fifa seems to have “3-6 types”

  7. emmex says:

    * Even if PES captured only a few select players unique attributes, they still captured it better than fifa would…

Got my copy last week Thursday and hav not been able to stop playing it. This game is gr8, if only there could be more freedom (like having total control over ur players)

The AI sometimes take ridiculous decisions for you. All in all I will rather hav this game than FIFA10 which I have to add is more like FIFA09 (not too much improvement).

  9. Anonymous says:

I agree the way players play is more individual in PES2010, and that PES does have a ‘weightier’ feel to the players.

But the claims by some (not you, emmex!) that you could put John Terry up front in FIFA10 and he’d be the same as Torres are way off the mark. Put Terry up front in both games and he’d be a lumbering dinosaur.

Both are good games and both offer a slightly different take on football, but for some to diss FIFA with claims such as in post #147 that ‘state’ FIFA allows you to pass and shoot perfectly whilst off balance, and other posts stating that you can play ping pong passes until you score are total rubbish. I’ve found PES to have by far the worse sense of body position and unrealistic sense of physics.

My experience with both games shows that PES allows passes and shots that travel at ridiculous and unrealistic speeds, and not much evidence of player balance when sprinting in one direction and playing a 40 yard bullet pass without a kicking animation at a wierd 90 degree angle from the kicker’s facing position.

To show how body position in FIFA10 is better, headed goals for example are all about where you deliver the cross to maximise your striker’s body position and get good contact. PES seems to allow bullet headers from 20 yards even if a cross comes in behind the striker’s head.

Both games are good in their own way, but the ridiculing of FIFA10 on here to make PES look good is nothing short of feeble.

  10. Steve67 says:

So answer this someone? How is it that Konami have again released a better PS2 game (IMO) this year (graphics aside)? Player animations and ball movement are again more realistic than on the next gen games. Ok it may be just an upgrade of past PS2 versions but it is still far more fun IMO. Konami are having a laugh!

  11. Dopecoil says:

What amazes me on this site is peoples constant references to the so-called pes glory days when in reality pes2010 is a much better and more rounded game now then it ever was on the ps2.Theres not one version on the ps2 that isnt plaqued with technical issues like slowdown or player freezing and has everyone forgotten the goalkeepers that never moved off there line or the static ai.

The reality is compared to ea konami is a small company that doesnt have the deep pockets of ea or the marketing budget to really push its unique selling points or the resources to spend infinite amounts of money on motion capturing or licenses.

Just to make people aware konami currently is a struggling company whos revenues have tumbled over the last few years and it is not out of the realms of possibility of this great dev co that has a heritage of arcade hits that goes back twenty years to close which would spell the end of pes leaving us with only the souless fifa franchise every year.

For me konami and pes productions has almost become a victim of there own success and blinkered restrospective thinking by there core fanbase who seem unable to be able to move on from the walls and confines of the ps2 versions and just embrace what pes actually is now and enjoy its strengths and merits and actually put the time in to learn and appreciate a different way of representing team based ai and a more simulated approach rather then unrealistic arcade responsiveness and automated gameplay.Pes2010 is not a bad game nor is a flawed one its a example of what happens when you try to replicate the naunces and deeper facets of the real game and counter peoples distane and feedback that pes2009 was to arcade like and watered down.

Fifa10 is nothing revolutionary nor is manual passing and shooting and while in terms of visual animation fifa10 is superior when it comes down to the game on the pitch is fifa10 really superior because i dont think it is.Many shout about the merits of manual passing like its the answer to the problem that plaques the limited nature of this genre but how much of a difference does it really make and is it not a reality that in some ways it actually weakens the experience and takes the focus away from player individuality.

Thers nothing wrong with having a opinion or prefering pes over fifa or vice versa but people should certainly be a bit more open minded and grateful and realise football games generally are better then they have ever been and that includes pes2010 which is with out doubt pes productions finest work in more then a decade.

  12. Dopecoil says:

    Steve67

I dont believe the ps2 version of pes2010 is superior or more fun i think that is a matter of opinion not fact. For me it boils down to one major issue and this relates heavily to adam at wenb, the media and people that never really made the transition to the changes to pes2009s ai which is the same in pes2010 and requires you to play the game differently then on the ps2.

This for me is what peple dont understand because in pes2009 and pes2010 its about reading danger rather then reacting and being always one step ahead ie being quick in your head not with your reactions.A better way of explaining this is pes is now more like a stratergy management sim rather then a game purely about reaction.Pes now on the next gen is a game which you are managing and manipulating the whole team and that includes on and off the ball to the point wear a really smart and skilled player can completely have a water tight defense and quite literally stop the cpu or human opposition from playing.

For me fifa10 is like tekken, accessible and forgiving while pes2010 is more like virtual fighter hard to master and deeper and more complex and requires you to have a quick brain and be able to plan and cultivate creative moves.

  13. Anonymous says:

That’s strange because I’ve found FIFA10 to be more challenging than PES. I can pretty much just play PES as I always have and can still score goals. It just doesn’t have the wow factor you used to get when scoring, it’s all too familiar and arguably easier to score these days.

FIFA10 is not actually that accessible. It forces you to slow down your game, keep posession and draw out the AI defences on the harder difficulties. If you draw your defenders out of position to chase the ball, FIFA’s AI will exploit that and rip you to shreds.

I just don’t get how people these days see PES as a simulation over FIFA. But each to their own.

  14. Shtoomer says:

Dopecoil, ive gotta hand it to you, although ive argued many an occasion that PES will be/is poor, you were right, it is a slow burner and is an absolutely fantastic game, best PES yet.

Apologies for the derogatory remarks made in previous threads…

But dont you find watching the premiership and champions league that pes2010 replicates the speed and tempo changes of the real game as well as the way the game ebbs and flows,fifa10 is slow and slightly lifeless with a floatie phyiscs system with only fluid animation. Its the same with movement and angles real football is fairly restrictive at a high level and is very on rails with only limited channels to play into.Respect and each to there own fifa10 doesnt do it for me but that doesnt make it a bad game.

    Shtoomer

Cheers it just a shame many others wont give it more time and get past its slightly last gen animation and see its strengths.

Funny thats how i see pes2010 not fifa10,horses for courses i suppose one mans joy is anothers distane.

  17. emmex says:

    @ l59

Odd…my experience of fifa was that it is easier to shoot at goal and score than PES. Ballooning a shot was totally unknown to me until PES6. Another problem to me is that with fifa there are similar repeated animations when shooting at goal. Its as if there are more “events” or possible occurances in PES…Note that i am comparing all the fifas up to 08 which i have played…and PES6 alone. The rest is based on what it looks like, as well as other research.

    Ball speed:
I know what you mean with ball speed. To me its as if fifa’s pitch is too small…so they made the ball move slower in order to compensate. With PES, the pitch’s scale seems more realistic to me, however i agree that there are times when the passing seems a tad fast. But as for the shooting, i find fifa’s shooting and its ball framerate too be absurd. On pc, it doesnt even animate all the frames, when on PES, it does and seems more realistic…to me at least.

    Headers: (PES6 and Fifa08)
yes…i agree, headers in fifa is better and more easy to master. I have learnt that in pes with time it becomes a bit easier…but takes too long to possibly master?

Im not trying to diss fifa as much as trying to emotionally explain as to why pes is honestly, in my opinion better and as to why i have switched from being one of the greatest fifa fans, to one loving pes more…If pes didnt exist, id have loved fifa. But to me pes6 was far far better than a game thats newer such as fifa8…and i dont see much change in either formats…So for me it makes sense to choose the update of the game i like most – pes…

How have you experienced the speed of the menu system and speed of making strategy changes before a match in fifa compared to PES? On pc, fifa is totally unmanageable unless you have a super pc…PES is instant super speed making changes via keyboard…Fifa doesnt even register the keyboard :/ Nor the game pad as well as PES does….

    Conclusion:
if it was up to me, id like having both games…but i cant. fifa is fun to play on occasion…i like the licencing. I like the presentation. I like the manager mode. I like the music. But even after all that, i go back to pes which is a “richer” more lasting experience…

  18. Steve67 says:

    @ 162 Dopecoil

I think like you said its just a matter of opinion and i just have the opinion that the way PES is going now appeals to less people than it did back in the PES5/6 days. Me personally would have been happy for Konami to retain the playability from them games and improve graphics to suit. I just didnt have any problems with the older versions and always thought, just a few minor tweaks and a next gen graphical re-vamp would have been great. I personally would like a balance between sim and easy pick up and play.

  19. Shtoomer says:

@ Dopecoil, the game is the best PES yet like you say, and it has grown on me i must admit.

However, the main issues which bug me regarding the game are the Goalkeepers, the robotic animations and the ‘too assisted’ passing…everything else is much better than last year. Lets just hope that an overhaul of the game engine is in order for 2011 and we will have the best footy game to date…

I enjoy both FIFA and PES this year, if people dont like one or the other then thats ok because its their opinion

  20. Anonymous says:

@emmex, FIFA08 is vastly different in gameplay to FIFA10, so headers a much much harder in the newer version. PES2010 for some odd reason keeps making my players do specatacular diving headers that rocket into the net, even if the ball bounces up from the ground and is begging to be volleyed, they seem to head it faster than you could kick it.

I really miss the old PS2 versions of PES when you could flick in glancing headers.

Dopecoil, I agree that PES does ebb and flow better. FIFA feels like you are always more in control of the game, and PES has a far superior sense of match atmosphere. This is the best thing about PES in my opinion. However I feel like FIFA offers more freedom. No goal scored for me is ever the same, which isn’t something I can say of PES. This is odd, because I used to say the opposite about the two games, that PES was realistic and no two goals would ever be the same.

PES at the moment feels like the AI forces me to approach goals in certain ways. It forces me down the flanks where I know the game can be exploited, for example. I know that if you shoot from just outside the box it will 100% be charged down, but further, unrealistic distances seem okay.

FIFA seems to offer a match where I can dictate the tempo, and approach my attacks how I want, which is great, but yea I do agree with you that the opposition ‘feels’ the same no matter which team I play against. They are either physically over the top or good on the break. That’s it.

I guess both are good, neither are anywhere near perfect and I do split myself between the two as both have aspects I prefer.

I think I just miss the old PES games. They may seem not very good nowadays, but back then they were revolutionary. I don’t get that feeling with either game anymore.

  21. Dave O says:

@168: On the PS2 you had less variables, less animations, less possibilities, and therefore less chance for glitches. The fact is that the series is moving forward, which means having to struggle through some growing pains. I for one see where it is heading and appreciate the effort Konami are making. I don’t think that your suggestion of a return to PES 6 with better graphics is a valid option though, because it woudln’t take too long before people started complaining about a lack of new technology (mo cap, collisions, more advanced physics, etc). Mind you, it would probably work for one year… Maybe Konami could do that for next year while they take more time to create a more advanced (2 year) version. Doubt it would happen though.

  22. Steve67 says:

    @ 171 Dave O

yes do agree that the series needed to move forward but i always thought maybe when they first switched to next gen, they should have stuck with PES 6 gameplay for a while. I think by mainly improving on the graphics, it would have been a more sensible way, sort of ‘not running before you can walk’ if that makes sense. I think that maybe konami wanted that whole next gen feel straight away before they were really ready and have slightly lost their way.
I dont really think many would doubt that Konami are close to creating a great game but IMO they arnt there yet.

  23. Dopecoil says:

    Anonymous

For me and this is my opinion which is purely subjective football is heavily based on wing play and using the flanks and you only have to watch a typical game now to see how much crossing is used in the premiership as well as the champions league these days which was always a weak area in pes on the ps2 and in pes2010 especially the range and choice of angles has been greatly increased which i feel is a good thing and enhances pes greatly.I feel the tempo is forced on you in fifa10 and actually feel that fifa10 offers me no more freedom of movement or passing then pes2010 even switching to manual in fifa10 only takes away the ability to hit anything other then a strait flat pass or cross very much like pes2010 with the right stick option. As for pes on the ps2 i personally struggle to see against pes2010 what the appeal of these old games now is as dave o eludes to the point that in many ways these games where more simple.Great comment of yours though and i respect your intelligent comments and opinion.

    Shtoomer

I dont have the problems with the goalkeepers in pes2010 as i feel the way they are replicated in pes2010 is more like real life and i also find the passing to be as free as i make it depending on the lenghth of button presses and the time i have on the ball.Theres nothing wrong with liking fifa and pes although for me pes just seems to have the magic i love and i prefer konamis modelling and pesentation as well as there scissor, paper, stone system.

  24. Dopecoil says:

    Steve67

The biggest problem for konami is the d-pad and embracing full analog control like fifa10 but then they would unfairly alienate to many people but this is still why pes2010 still has a on rails feel and is slightly rigid.

This the problem with pes now and something that isnt freely aknowledged by the naysayers fifa10 does not have this option like pes2010 so is naturally going to be more visually and play more like a last gen game.

  25. Dopecoil says:

  26. Dave O says:

@Dopecoil – I don’t personally think you can equate d pad with animations. Look at the fluidity of Fifa 09 when using the d pad…?

Generally, what was your experience of Fifa08?

I need to figure out if fifa10 is really that much better than fifa08…if its not, pes6 will be better for me still….

    @ everyone else out there:

Which is better, pes6 or pes10?
Can someone possibly write a mini review or comparison of the differences? Would really like your input

  29. Anonymous says:

Cheers Dopecoil, it’s nice to have a decent discussion about the game(s)!

Following on from yesterday I dusted off my PS2 and gave PES6 another spin for the first time in 2 years. Yep, I agree with you, at the time it seemed revolutionary but now it is very arcade like and lightning fast in comparison to both next gen games.

PES2010 seems so much more methodical and slower, which in my opinion is a good thing. It’s amazing how the memory of an older game can actually grow on you, and when playing newer versions, can create a false impression of that older title being grander than it actually was.

I think that’s because PES4, 5 & 6 were such genuine leaps forward that they left a bigger impression, whereas because PES2010 is more of an incremental improvement on this then it isn’t leaving such a big impression. But yes, PES2010 is by far the best PES yet but for me somehow FIFA10′s gameplay just seems more ‘real’. Learning to play FIFA10 eventually allows for you to control tempo etc, like PES, it just takes work and I don’t think that FIFA10 is given the credit it deserves for having quite a layered depth of play.

  30. Anonymous says:

Emmex, yea I played PES6 yesterday and PES2010 is much better. Ball physics seem better, the gameplay is so fast on PES6 (though that does seem to be much quicker when using a PS2 with scart lead on a HDTV, so that may be a false impression).

However the shooting on PES6 seems more varied (you can hit ‘softer’ shots that look more realistic – I’ve found PES2010 always results in bullet shots which kind of ruins goals for me), and headers are definitely more varied.

But all in all PES6 seems more arcade like, and encourages players to get the ball, turn and sprint half the pitch if they want. I guess it seemed more ‘simulation’ at the time because it was the best game around at that time.

One definite improvement though on PES6 is the audio. The commentary is light years ahead of the next gen games (different commentator and co-commentator). It is more relative to the action, the commentary sounds like it is actually at the game rather than in a broom cupboard, and the crowds are far less repetetive.

I have some friends who are audio programmers and have done some pretty big games, and they were appalled at how bad the sound was on PES2010. It really affects the overall experience and there’s no possible reason why this has got worse over time.

  31. emmex says:

    @ 179

this is good news to me. That means cause i didnt buy PES8 and PES9, PES10 will be a huge leap for me from PES6 :D
Looking at video footages such as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ottMihGY4JQ made me think PES is rather fast anyways…I think it would have been cool if one could choose a slower ball speed like in one of the older fifas i think it was….Surely thats not hard to code?

    @ 180

I liked the commentary on PES2006…for example, the commentator would say “Benni McCarthy” (calm), “Benni McCarthy” (excited) and “Benni McCarthy” (in a frenzy once he shoots) – which i found to be more original and fresh than fifa08….

I think what is better than an arcade like game, but with some form of simulation? I think fifa is not enough arcade…and pes balances it well cause it playes like an arcade game, but with more teams and feel than an actual arcade game…

I cannot wait for my pc to be fixed or to get a new pc. cant buy pes10 without a pc :(
Been a few months without my PES6 :(

  32. emmex says:

heck…id even play the dreaded fifa08 if my pc was fixed…

  33. emmex says:

I admit…fifa10 looks good on consoles other than PC
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcc5mMLaOwc&NR=1

  34. Anonymous says:

Yea I’ve heard FIFA10 is pretty bad on PC’s for some reason. But yeah the commentary on PES6 is so much better than PES2010, as are the sound effects. In PES6, the ball doesn’t give out a massive thud and echo when you kick the ball, and there are no terribly shrill ref whistles either. Why did they add them for a more advanced game?! Really odd!

  35. Granulated says:

Whenever people praise FIFA2010 they should make it clear (to the uninitiated) that they are referring to the PS3 and XB360 variants and not the joke PC version.

    That is all.

  36. Granulated says:

    184…

Just turn down the sound fx,, then it’s more like how it is watching it on the telly.

By the way..if anyone watched the Norwich cup game on Saturday they would have heard even louder ball sounds. (due to the relative low crowd noise)

  37. emmex says:

    @ 185 & 186

Then the answer is simple for me to get PES instead of Fifa….cause im on pc…

I agree about sound settings…my commentary is usually set higher…i dont have all the sounds equally maxed…

  38. emmex says:

    I meant @ 184,185 and 186…

  39. Martin says:

i agree with a lot of these comments.
dislike the keepers gloves, they still look like they should be coal shovelers. the nets are cool how they change colour with certain kits. but maybe it woulda been better having some sort of stadium editer to change this.
the music is a lot better lol.
someone said about not being able to score screamers, i got the 35m award thing in like the 3rd game i played, granted it was against the tunisia keeper but still, was cool.
transfers are stupidly long, wish i was in total control of bids as it seems the scout or whoever bids is stupid.
    anyhoo, great game!
