KONAMI’s innovative Teammate Control allows users to move two players at once
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has unveiled additions to PES 2012 that will give users more control over the on-field action than in any football game to date. The new Teammate Control system – which gives users complete control over secondary players while the runner has the ball – represent an astonishing advance for the series.
KONAMI has previously outlined Off The Ball control, an all-new player select system wherein any player can be targeted and controlled as a set piece is taken or while defending. But Teammate Control will give PES 2012 players total freedom in all areas. The Teammate Control system works in two ways, with users pressing the right analogue stick in the direction of the player they wish to control. The Assisted mode allows the user to activate a second player by depressing the R3 button, and allows users to get to grips with the greater level of control via effective running movements. Greater control is offered by the Manual mode, wherein the user has complete freedom of movement of the second player, and can make shuttle runs, find space, and shake off markers before calling for the pass from the player still with the ball. The player will then revert to computer control when the R3 button is released, and can also be used to override any AI runs the player wants to cancel. Both can be affected at any time, so players can make moves without waiting for a pass to be completed.
PES 2012 has already added a wealth of new AI elements to ensure that its on-field action truly reflects that of football at the highest level. The Active AI system ensures that players track attackers more effectively, but without compromising the shape of the team, while one-on-one situations offer greater control as defenders press and jostle to win the ball, as attackers can use upper body feints and movements to bypass and wrong-foot their man.
Series Producer Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka and his Tokyo-based team have also confirmed a secondary batch of welcome additions, many of which have been added following consultation with PES and football fans from all over the world. Penalties in PES 2012, for instance, have been completely reworked and now use a camera from behind the taker, with players determining the position, power and placement of each kick. Shooting has also been enhanced, with the various attributes of each player taken into account with the timing, pace of the ball and position of the striker’s body to the ball coming into effect to produce less wild, ballooned efforts. Shot feints also return, with player moving so the goalie commits to the save, whilst the player can reposition for a clearer effort.
Alongside these additions to shooting movement and reaction everywhere else has also been greatly enhanced. Valuable time has been shaved from player reactions, and overall improvements to the animation via flow-block motions and changes to the player hit point elements have led to a three-frame improvement in response times, meaning players are quicker to chase down balls, amend and tailor their run, or take on a defender. The speed with which players turn has also been streamlined, making quick movements more fluid and natural. Vitally, control is no longer totally lost when losing possession of the ball, with players recovering quickly when stumbling to reclaim the ball, or close the ground when tracking back.
All skills can also now be refined in the return of the much loved ‘Challenge Training’ mode. A hugely popular part of PES lore, Challenge Training gives the player a series of tough tests which they can use to hone various skills. The mode allows users to work hard on their attacking and defending skills to improve their main game. Similarly, there are dribbling tests and set-piece challenges that necessitate hitting a series of targets, and punishing shooting tasks are used to push the player as they put in the hours that will make all the difference on field.
The aesthetic style of PES 2012 has also been refined further, with the overall movement of the players now more fluid than ever, with animations segueing into each other effortlessly and incredible attention to detail. Such is the level of graphical finesses that you can see players sweating, their neck muscles tensing as they call for the ball and bark orders to each other, and the muscles in their mouths and around their eyes contract to show the emotions the players are experiencing. This is further enhanced via dynamic lighting in the game which creates shadow and reflects from their eyes in true real-time. In keeping with the game’s exclusive use of the UEFA Champions LeagueTM and UEFA Europa LeagueTM licenses, referees governing such matches will also wear the official UEFA Champions LeagueTM uniforms.
Attention to detail also extends to the circumstances surrounding each match. Players limber up before a match, groundsmen prepare the surface as the players wait in the tunnel, while managers can be seen patrolling the touchline as camera cranes pan to cover the action. The players also pick up the ball in readiness of a throw-in, and general physicality is enhanced, with players reacting to how they are challenged, stumbling or falling depending on the severity of the tackle.
“The addition of Teammate Control is something we have been working on for a while now, and we are delighted that it will make its debut in PES 2012,” commented Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “We have been building to create a control system that truly lets the player do whatever they like on field, and the ability to manually control a second player while simultaneously running with the ball opens all kinds of attacking options. Coupled with the Active AI advancements that ensure supporting players make shuttle run and find space, and I think we have made a huge step towards producing the most advanced football title to date.”
“This is the start of a major new era for PES,” added Murphy. “In the coming weeks we will detail more on how the ever-popular Master League has evolved, and will be unveiling the new face of the series. With PES moving ever upwards, it is time for an equally high profile and skilled cover star. The new player has all the attributes of the new game, in that he is a strong all-rounder, skillful, fast, and capable of making magic happen on-field. We have had a wonderful three years working so closely with Lionel Messi and thank him for his efforts and support. He has been key in the evolution of the series, and we wish him all the best.”
PES 2012 will be released for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360, Windows PC, Wii, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2 in Autumn, 2011. For more information please contact Steve Merrett at Voltage PR on 020 7502 4462, or email steve@voltagepr.com.

Quite a good informative and interesting read there mr Donut. Some exciting new ‘dimensions’. Here,s hoping that PES will do it this year and return to be the best………… Still, will judge from the Demo though before buying
cant wait to see new gameplay video’s now
It is a good idea, but the most important thing is the execution of the idea. The most positive thing about it, is that it shows a clear intention to progress past completely automatic off the ball movement.
Though personally, I think the right analog stick is not needed at all, because I think the gamer could design preset scripts via the team settings, and then press and release the L2 button in order to trigger each sequence of the script, and that’s it.
It’s more comfortable in my opinion, if the center forward moves automatically one second or ten seconds after the gamer pressed and released the L2 button. You then alternate between scripts.
Script A: the center forward automatically moves from Point A to Point B, four seconds after the gamer pressed and released the L2 button.
Script B: the center forward automatically moves from Point A to Point B, ten seconds after the gamer released the L2 button.
It would do the same exact thing that the right analog stick can do, but it would be impossible to exploit, and it would be much more comfortable to use because you do not need to be directing the right analog stick in order to determine the movement of the 2nd player, and at the same time direct the left analog stick in order to dribble with the ball carrier.
Bottom line. I think it’s a great albeit obvious idea, and above all, I’m just glad that Konami has finally made the first decisive action to distance themselves from completely automatic off the ball movement.
However, I do not like the idea of moving the right analog stick in order to determine off the ball movement, because I think the execution could be simpler and better.
For example. With a preset script that cannot be affected when in possession of the ball. This would mean that on the defensive end, the computer would know how to automatically cursor change, which means that the split second that was required in order to manually cursor change would not be necessary anymore, which means that the computer could easily contain the team in possession of the ball via simple execution that revolves around TIMING.
In other words. You would replace the manual cursor change button, with a new system that would force you into making mistakes and yet would be easier to use.
On the other hand. With the right analog stick system, the team in possession of the ball has manual control over two players, the 1st player can do anything at any given time, and the 2nd player can do anything at any given time. On the defensive end, how does the computer contain such a system if the computer does not know what the team in possession will do?
The right analog stick is good for giving directions, but it isn’t exactly a responsive button. What factor would determine the TIMING of the off the ball run? What factor would determine if the center forward reacted a little too late or a little too early? What factor would determine if the center back anticipated the play or if the center back did not anticipated the play?
I’m guessing that this is where the right analog stick becomes redundant, because this is the area of the game where the “Active AI” takes over the game and decides if the “center forward reacted just in time” or if the “center forward reacted too quickly and was caught offside” or if the “center forward reacted too late and the chance was lost” or if, etc, etc.
Above all, I see it as something positive because it serves as a starting point on which they can build on. However, I can see a lot of flaws with the right analog stick system. Because although it adds something new into the game, it also does not fix any of the core flaws — “center back reacted too late and was caught off guard” or “center forward reacted too quickly and was caught offside” — of PES.
With a preset script system, where the gamer determines the exact TIMING of the run, the core flaw of PES would no longer spoil the game.
yes mighty fine read, informative and clear. Lets all wait in anticipation for amateur to give us his thoughts…….
Whats happenin over at pesfan, did nt realise they were off line
Christ he beat me to it
i am so excited to hear this news.i hope it runs smooth and soft as flowers do in a nice summers day.

Amateur, you are wrong.
I’ve been waiting years for Konami to to make use of the right analog stick as a way of controlling the secondary players. It gives the sense of communicating with your AI teammates, free from scripting.
The stuff you mentioned with the L2 button, waiting ten seconds for the forward to make a scripted move, it sounds like complete rubbish. In all those seconds the opportunity to attack will be completely lost and the forwards run will be way too late and irrelevant to the situation.
Teammates need to react immediately when a weakness in the opposite defense occurs. I want to be able to give precise directions to my teammates as I’m right there in the action. Otherwise I might as well play Football Manager instead.
@Amateur
I struggle to agree with you too.
I’m assuming you have an incorrect understanding of what this new feature is?
Not only is the AI on another level this year making runs for you, you can also take control of that player in real time if hes not going where you want him to go.
If I have the ball and my 2nd player is running towards the left and I want him to run towards the right, I can click in the right analogue stick and direct him to where I want him to go..
By the time I have control of him the situation may have changed so I may now want to direct him somewhere else.. With this new control method we can do this.
This feature isnt designed to be used throught the whole game but is there as a possibility in certain situations.
I’m struggling to understand why you no only talk negative of this new feature which is fair enough, but your alternative method is much worse IMO.
Imagine my scenario with your method??
Why would you not choose real time control over pre determined commands?
Cool
@Rune #12
Hi, i want to know your opinion about this team mate control. are you talkin about the assisted one ?
if yes, then by the time you send team mate a run (R3), what is the difference between xavi and lower rated player in terms of ability to look for spaces e.g attacking awareness, etc ?
Thx
@Starmind
I’m talking about being able to control teammates running directions in general. The right stick is perfect for that. Fifa let you make your teammates run with the tap of L1 if I remember correctly, but in that case the teammate will only run towards the goal.
I would like PES to have the exact same function but with the tap of the right stick instead. That way you can control your teammate to run any direction you’d like.
I know PES won’t have this function exactly the way I would preffer but I still think using the right stick to control teammates is the absolute right thing to do. More important than using it as a skillstick.
I remember when Fifa many years ago had this option of the teammate being able to run slalom with the right stick (like the second PES video of manual control) but that was very hard to learn. It’s difficult to control two players at once if the right stick functions exactly like the left stick dribbling.
I’d rather prefer if you only point out the direction your teammate should run with at tap of the right stick and then the teammate runs straight in that direction.
I guess my way of thinking is something in between compared to the assisted and manual control in the latest PES videos.
About Xavi and lower rated players, my opinion is that their awareness abilities should matter only when they are AI controlled. When you yourself control them, their awareness should depend fully on your own skill.
I expected something like this in pes2012 and contary to how a lot of the hardcore are over-reacting,i believe this to be a feature that will take pes2012 to another level. For those who are skilled enough and looking for a added dimension, off the ball control in the manual setting is a god send. Its something that compliments a already very active and dynamic ai system.
Im all for more physical control,be that off the ball and in terms of how much we the end user have of the player via the left stick and how great are influence is of all the elements on the pitch eg,dribbling, moving with and without the ball, short passing long passing, through passing, crossing and shooting. Its something pes now is focusing more on which is only a good thing compared to the over automation of pes on the ps2 and pes08,09,10.Stats have there place but you cannot dismiss the benefits of how direct user control make for a much deeper and rewarding game.
Amateur
Your never happy even when konami implement something youve been crying out for 2 years.
I do hope our tiny brains can handle controlling 2 players at once. We men arn,t very good at multi tasking you know.
I think I,d better let my missus test the demo when it comes out :-[
Yes i also think amateurs 10 sec hotch potch idea is gibberish but perhaps if he was to write a 4000word disetation explaining it again i could be persuaded
@ Sweet Disposition
Your last sentence was just what I was thinking
I may be a little idle, but when I see Amateur post, the first thing I do is check to see how long it is, and if it goes much further than off my screen I dont read it.
jimmyboots
The manual off the ball control will really come into its own while defending, being able to track the player on the ball with your left stick assigned player but still covering space and dangerous areas in the box with your right stick assigned player.
The possibilities are mind boggling although i can still imagine its something that will be used sparingly even by the most skilled both in attack and defense but is a great way of also having full control of one-twos just as ISS did on the n64.
As for the assisted setting, its again a bonus and although something more from the fifa handbook has its place and provides a greater option irrespective of stats because a league 2 player can still move in a forward direction.
Theres no way any of this will impact player individuality because the secondary player is just like controlling your first cursor assigned player.People have to get over the fact that even weaker players and lower league players still make clever intelligent runs, not just the top players.Pes stats have been far to imbalanced for to long and have dictated PESs gameplay which prior to pes2011 was to on rails and one dimensional.
In ISS on the n64 stats and total user control complimented each other perfectly,as it will pes2012.
i hope the new manual off the ball control will be easy to use.
@samantha
If your,e a female, i,m sure you will find it a doddle lol
@ Amateur, please come and work for us here at Konami, your forward thinking and godlike vision for the perfect game of pes is unrivaled, all these years we have spent millions on the development of the series, money wasted, all we needed was you,,,,,what is japanese for Tosser.
Say no to pumpkin heads, say yes to net editor.
In terms of gameplay it sounds a good addition although I agree with the comment earlier that it is something that will be used sparingly yet it could be the crucial ingredient you need in a particular match so in my mind its welcome. Anything at this stage that makes each edition different and improving from the last is welcome lol
I’m trying to stay reserved however I can’t deny that there is a trickle of hope manifesting within me the more I read about the game of course the main reveals are still to come like the Master League which I’m hoping is greatly expanded and improved upon. And of course there’s the new mysterious ‘Football Life’ mode….. could we be living the life of a football player off and on the pitch? lol
lucifer i m going to piss on your parade one more time, iff you were going to play b a l for 3 hours would you rather get to play 12 matches or play 3matches because the rest of the tim e your driving to training or buyin a car or a mansion or some other unbearable sh it. Have you really thought it through because as much as a video possibly can it turns my stomach!!!
plus would it just be one imaginary city whatever club you play for or would their be different locations or even different countries with different climates, the complexities would be ridiculous
Great addition
Though I’m trying to figure out if it will be possible to move both players and pass at the same time, not enough thumbs, perhaps?
Okay first of all nobody can ever p*ss on my parade that must be clearly understood before I go further frankytoodumb lol
As for your assessment…On the contrary I have actually thought it through extensively….In the M.L. you wouldn’t have to visit the city or wherever if you did not wish to they could easily add an option to just play it like previous editions not using any ‘sandbox’ elements or you could play it with ‘sandbox’ enabled and still not have to explore a city to get to your next game or key features for management as you would spawn in the same room (your office) every time where all these things would be anyway.
As for the city I’m thinking it would be one standard city no matter what club you go for particularly at the moment… maybe later (a good few years later) they could recreate more big club cities but its a gradual process all this. What would be different however would be the Stadium in the City which of course would represent the Club you’ve chosen.
Listen I know people won’t and don’t like this idea but I really do think it would help advance the game on in particular when it comes to repetitiveness.
If ur online is crap again, then all ur new features r worthless.
Guys clearly teammate control, in special manual control will be useful in some punctual situations….i like very much the idea…..i think is like some feints…..there are some that you never use, but in a particular play if you have the ability to do them in the right moment will be an advantage for sure…All is centralize in your practice and vision….it’s not imposible to control both player at once…patience is the key…
@31 … Totally agree. Online better be up to scratch this year or the whole thing of controlling two player at once and what not is going to be catastropic. Lag, button delay, cursor switching all over the place. Its a receipe for disaster..
Online is the most important.. to me anyways
I think what PES 2012 will be missing is the L2 command where you send your player through time and space to a pre set script!
amazing news on the return of situation training! i wrote extensive suggestions on this a few months back in the konami feedback zone. is it possible that they read those suggestions! surely not…
i’m excited by all of this news, it really was more than i expected.
why is the shape of the nets so important? i just don’t get it.
Ι hope for an early demo -like Master League Online beta-last year. Here in Greece my friend which is a journalist tryed out yesterday in a presentation the beta code of the game.He told me that shooting needs some fixing and more animations for gameplay. The other areas of the game especially AI were very good.
i think that this is Konami’s answer to fifa’s pulling of a trigger button to set the player on the run. The beauty of Konami’s system, if it works correctly, you will be to position players diagnolly etc.
My only worry, is that it will be overpowered…
As others have said, so glad to hear the training challenges are back, they have been sorely missed on all of the previous next gen versions. Ai sounds promising, just hope the manual movement isn’t going to be anything like we saw in fifa 04/05
The main problems of PES 2011 are:
1. The game takes sides – sometimes a team plays well while the other teams players either fall, jump over the ball or look at the ball and don’t run.
2. the artificial intelligence failure can be obvious and the players sometimes do ridiculous actions like the player may wait for a ball at unnecessary moments.
3. sometimes the referee takes sides.
4.when playing online the game stops you from raising your sports ranking by not letting you play. If the opposite teams ranking is low it helps them, and on the main league it supports them completely. This doesn’t happen all the time although it can be seen.
5. There can be stupid passes where for example the player kicks a ball from in front of the net but it either goes over the net or out from the side. Mathematically this is impossible but there is clearly artificial intelligence failure as the game is taking sides.
i love PES 2010 and the only problem i saw with it was that the referee sometimes took sides. PES 2011 as a game is very good only if it supports you. If it doesn’t, and you cannot score a goal, it can become a very frustrating game. Overall with these problems, i can conclude that if it helps them play, the team plays well , and if it helps them score, the team scores. My final complaint is that when playing online, the internet limiter program is making the game stop half way through, causing the team ahead to be unjustly treated and lose the game so there should be a solution to this problem too.
1)i hope you add level that is more difficult than the top player level ……
2)and i hope that the goalkeeper be more clever and smart ….
3)and if you add more cameras it will be nice…
4)and if you make the audience can come down from the stands and the security try to catch them is not a requirement all audience but just one or two when your team is losing the match ….
5)and the Commentator if he Comment on the whole match it will be wonderful…
6)you should add the real coachs in master league like Mourinho _ S.alex _ Guardiola …….
7)we want the referees be more realistic specially lines men….. with my regards…

Biggest issue with PES when playing online every fooker wants to be barca and it’s getting quite boring after a few
No one want to play lesser teams
Another frustrating thing when fookers display them stupid messages you ain’t gonna beat me !! Really takes the Pisa and enjoyment
Seabass needs to sort above issue creating different room perhaps for lesser teams and get rid of those stupid messages
Please sort this out!!!!
Fantasy football league is up and running.
