PES Matters 30th January 2010

There were some great tips from you guys for getting that little bit extra from the sliders and formations to counter teams, so a big thanks to the contributors for that.

As you guys are aware we will be driving our next PES improvements initiative shortly, but this week I’d like to focus on what we still enjoy about the series.  Yes we all have various issues with the game, and the next few months will be testimony to that, but for now, how about we celebrate what we enjoy about the game?

What better way to start that off, than with me just going over why PES is still the game for me.

Firstly I’d like to point out that I have played FIFA 2010, and I am still considering doing a comparison of the two games at a later date.  In order for me to objectively do this, I would have to play FIFA for a considerable length of time in order to give a balanced review.  There’s no point me spending only a couple of hours on it, and then comparing it to PES.  That said, I haven’t been able to muster much in the way of energy to actually play FIFA.

Going off on a slight tangent, I’ve recently lent both FIFA and PES to a good friend, as he has been out of touch with both games, and I have to say it’s been tough going whilst I didn’t have PES2010 available to play.  I am planning on getting feedback from my friend on what he thinks of both games, but that will be later, once I do my own comparison.  Anyway, now that I have PES back, I’m really enjoying my football fixes!

I don’t want to go into any of the issues I have with the game, so for those of you who will be wondering why I’m wearing rose tinted specs, it’s purely to savour what is great about PES - the time for moaning is coming up soon!

So then, what is it about PES2010 that has me coming back for more?

Primarily I have to say that I am really really enjoying the new Master League game.  It has me hooked big time.  My current team has been languishing in the Second Division for just over 3 seasons.  The first three seasons were spent rebuilding my team.  I used one of the default generic teams (Team B with average stat players) and have been spending time on getting in players that are out of contract, as well as to bring through some youth players.  The first two seasons were tough, as we couldn’t really match the better teams in the division, but then I have also been fielding weaker sides in some games if I came close to the top three, as I didn’t want to be promoted without winning the league.  This of course gets me into trouble with some board members and fans (yeah – this bit is in my head, there’s nothing anyone can do about it!), as they lose faith in me, but thankfully the club owner has faith in me.  The tail end of season 2 and most of season 3 I have been leaving match day to the coach.  This hasn’t gone down well with the fans since they expect the manager to be there on match day.  It’s a radical approach to building for the future which I hope will pay off.  I  have been spent with me concentrating on wheeling and dealing players – where I’m trying to get the kids off on loan to other clubs to butch up, and try to chase better freebie players.

My budgets are low, and money is scarce, so there’s no big name players in my team.  But I have promised the fans and the club that Season 4 we will be crowned as Champions.  I’ve now fully taken over match day games, and currently have a settled side, with far too many fringe players sat doing nothing.  I’ve got to trim the club’s wage bill, and deliver the league this current season.

At the end of the previous season we finished third from bottom.  Over the summer transfer window I only managed to get in a couple of wide players.  So overall it’s the same squad being used for Season 4.  So far we’re top of the league with stats: P9 W6 D1 L2

Slowly the fans are beginning to believe, and if we can maintain our momemtum this will be a fanstastic season that no-one at the club will forget.

That in a nutshell describes why PES2010 does it for me.  I have many obstacles to overcome, players to keep happy, games to win, and a league to deliver.  The pressure is mounting, and I’ve got a long tough season ahead which I’m sure will have me elated and pulling my hair out in equal measures.

One of the best things about the Master League is that you can just get “sacked”, and start all over again in Division 2 trying to get back into the elite of the footballing world.

Right, it’s over to you guys to share your where your passions with PES2010 are.

Thanks for reading

Is there anything good about the game?! Dougie, what youve highlighted isnt so much as to whats good with the game, its more to do with how your imagination makes the game for you, fun.

Ive retired from playing football games until the FIFA 2010 World cup game comes out . . . hopefully it capture what the world cup is all about.

KONAMI are so close to losing a diehard in me, its unreal.

Whatever happened to the world beaters. They treat us like fools . . .

This statement was released a few days ago………

    Hello Everybody,

just wanted to inform you quickly about some good changes in Online Play for PES 2010 – We now have merged the separated PES 2010 PC servers. The most recent PES 2010 update file eradicated any previous problems experiences with CPU incompatibility. You can now experience the best ever PES 2010 online experience.

I am currently in Tokyo discussing lots of ideas from your feedback with WEP, stay tuned for more details coming soon.

    Sayonara,
    Jon

Just played 5 games online today, first game was fine, second crashed, 3rd game was fine and the last two had a huge level of button lag!

‘You can now experience the best ever PES 2010 online experience.’

    I THINK NOT!!

I have always enjoyed Master League, But I’m still wondering why they took out the option of starting with your own team from scratch (your own team name, kits, etc..) and building them up to contend for trophies.

For me, at the moment, the best is Become A Legend. I haven’t had much time to play recently, but I am on my 3rd season. I played my first two at Aston Villa, where I won the league (2nd season), FA Cup (1st season) and Europa League (2nd season) and I also won the top goal scorer in each competition. After my second successful season with Villa, Real Madrid came in for me, and since I had won everything with Villa I took the chance to play for Real (even though I don’t like them). Doing well with them, top of the league and qualified for the knock out stage of Champions League and still competing for the Spanish Cup.

I play PES more hours that I sleep
So it only has to be the great MASTER LEAGUE, In coming years Konami will scrap that too i guess :P

  6. tartan Says:

I only get time to play an hour here 2 there and as a result play mostly online or at least I did. As like many i’ve play PES for many years and for the last couple put up with shocking online problems(since PS3)but this year i can’t do it!!

If they can’t get it to work remove it from the game, don’t say it works just to sell copys then for people to be extremly hacked off!!!

Just played MAG 256 online players 1 map and it WORKS no problem

    PES 1v1 Forget it!

    Seabass OUT

  7. WolverHammond Jr. Says:

Agree with ‘Seabass out.’ It’s like putting up with your coach after he’s taken you to the 3d division.

  8. Amateur Says:

No offense DD but the things that I do like about PES remain pretty much the same. I mean, the game simply hasn’t changed enough.

That said, one of the features that I do like about PES10 is the “cards” concept. I can choose what type of roulette each player uses, etc, etc. This wasn’t possible before, but it is now.

But besides that, I’m very disappointed with football sims in general: PES10 and FIFA10 are simply more of the same and I don’t see any real effort…

Between the two games, I think both are clearly outdated, but perhaps FIFA10 requires more skills. Using the word “realistic” to describe either game would be absurd.

Both games are 10 Minute Simulations: an addictive hook with no substance at its core.

  14. Me Says:

Bliv me I m in the 2021-2022 season, Master League is the best for me, I jus dont find become a legend dat interesting.

    I am a master league junkie………..

  15. Dave O Says:

Master league for me as well, and I don’t think there is anything wrong at all with the fact that a lot of what I love about PES comes from my own imagination. I guess I actually prefer a game which allows you to inject some of your own imagination into the game, sort of like reading a book as opposed to watching TV.

Also, here are a few of the other things I love about this year’s game:

    - Shooting. Ball physics are pretty good this year in general.

    - Playmaking. By this I mean I can score more Aresnal-like pass and move goals.

    - Tackling. Collisions need work, but I think PES 2010 is under-rated in this area. Fifa in comparison I find to be worse than last-gen in terms of tackling and PES 2010 is a massive improvement over PES 09’s tackling, which was far too restricted and AI-controlled. I think it can be better, but it’s pretty well executed this year for what it is.

    - Player Likenesses. Adds a lot to the game when I see real players faces. Unfortunately I don’t sign superstars in my ML, so I miss out on a lot of this. However, in ML I like facing off against these superstars who really look so much like their real-life-selves.

    - The Patch. I’m still impressed with the fact that I’ve been given basically a new game. I can’t say enough about how much this has done for PES this year. Brilliant. Not perfect(refs in particular are still too lenient) but it has fixed so much, and in fact did more than I could have hoped, espcially with the new smoother and better animations and dribbling.

    - No more 90 degree turns! Well, not as effective anyway.

    - 360 dribble. I don’t understand how people can say this isn’t true 360. It is at least close enough that I could barely tell if it were more precise. Having been on the D pad, I find some problems witht he analogue stick, but in general I’m cool with it.

    - Champions league, in ML and BAL is a great addition.

    - Improvements to ML are great. Real money adds a lot too.

    - Difficulty level in general is quite alright. I would like more of a challenge, but I’m hoping that as I get better players the AI will actually get more difficult, as was suggested by Ockrass.

  16. christos21 Says:

Sorry guys i didnt mean that,i didn’t understand it.Sorry again.

  17. SIN Says:

i agree with post 4 about creating your own team from scratch. This for me was one of the best features of ML over Fifa’s Manager mode. Building up your own team with unknowns and struggling to sign anyone of decent quality for a season or 2; this is what made ML great for me!!

Im still enjoying this year’s version but i really hope konami bring back the option to create your own team. At the moment im playing with PES United…but its just not the same.
Also whatever happened to trading players. Not sure why they took it out but it was a useful feature.

  18. starship d Says:

Ive noticed in normal league mode (not master league) that unlike previously transfers/edits made are not reflected.

Plus the unlocked players seem harder to find in ML.

Previously you could search via newcomers also. it seems more focussed on international players now though, have noticed a young belamy (belasie) Veron, and Lando Donovan who looks like he could be good for my master league team (even if I am Liverpool)

Still loving the game, and noticing nice touches.

My friend not big on football, bit more converted than me loves BAL mode.
