PES 2013 Demo: My Thoughts

My my Konami, you really have brought something amazing to the table. I have just finished playing my 25th match on the demo. I pulled an all nighter last night, only the 4th time I have stayed up for a video game and boy, am I glad I did. I mean what a demo. I dived straight in for a match against England. I picked Portugal, primarily for the rivalry but also to test out Ronaldo. I played on all the default settings (regular difficulty) and instantly loved it. I could ramble on about what happened play by play but I think a breakdown of the demo would be better. This might be a two parter so if you want to watch my video in which I go into way more detail check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aojL8YTmNqE

Lets start with the PLAYER ID. It’s amazing. It really is a game changer. Sure, Ronaldo has amazing speed and strength and Neymar has incredible control but the players you really see it through are the play makers. Pirlo is a genius. He is very slow and cautious (John Terry beat him in sprint when Pirlo had 5 yards on him) but when you have the ball with him, the game feels slower. Last year in my MLO and ML Chronicles, I bought Barretto and Shimizu as my first transfers. This year I know to put my money into a play maker. They really nailed it.

Passing is slightly tweaked. The animation of actually passing is great. The better players (Deco, Pirlo, Ganso) wrap their foot around it whereas a player with lesser technique will just pass straight. This slows down the game even more.

Overall game play is slowed down. The pace is very realistic as in it takes a split second longer than PES 2012 to get the ball out from your feet. The speed merchant card is there but its only for show. Neymar, Ronaldo, Defoe are rocket fast but its a different type of speed. Throw in the trap control and you have a game 30-40% slower than its predecessor. The speed spammers wont be happy!

The manual shooting is awesome. It takes practice and I am struggling to apply the correct pressure. The players body position matters more. The regular shooting is tweaked and improved. There is way more control over the shots but obviously they are more central than the manual shooting. Nobody can complain about the game lacking the depth in shooting anymore. The chip shot might be over powered but this is an early build and has been fixed already. That brings me onto my next point.

The goalkeepers are still weak in the demo BUT they have been dramatically improved since then. I heard rumours of them only being at 40% build so that’s positive. The signs are there though, hidden beneath the code. The goalies have more awareness to the ball, the danger of players and they do put it out of play more than patting it across the box. They will be very much improved for retail game.

Thats it for part 1, I’m off to play another few matches against my brother who hads thumped me twice in a row!  What ye think? Anything you want my opinion on or to go into more detail?

Get in touch below and in the meantime check out my video of Neymars manual wondergoal. Watch the touch and layoff from my striker. Magic.

  1. i hate barca boys says:

I found with pes12 most people relied on pace, a long through ball beating all your defenders leaving them stranded
counter attacking play with ac Milan pato robinho on wings ala barca or even Portugal with 3 up top…people pass to Ronaldo and messi and with ease they walk through your whole team so unrealistic and frustrating whereas i sort play the passing game build up play just like Spain in the euro boring but effective so for this reason i am glad Konami have slowed down the game like i said in previous post using Ronaldo i couldn’t even get pass lescott and found counter attacking plays the defenders would be on the tails of the opposition most of the time

too many niggly fouls! Come on REF
    the offside seems ok now

Not impressed by the menus, animations eg in the tunnel, final whistle all look the same as pes 12..

  2. Amateur says:

Excellent article Barry, really excellent, straight to the point, relaxed. As for the game, well, as a spectator I cannot say that I am thrilled about it (as was expected to be fair), but you know, I know people who loved PES11 but cannot play PES12, so going by your words, it seems as though Konami will deliver what most of their fans really want and expect.

Furthermore, for my part, the thing that Konami needs to do -needs to do- if they want my money this year, is to offer much improved controls for dribbling, and when I say dribbling, I really mean “shielding” the ball as opposed to “running” at the defenders; if they can offer all the useful (no stupid rainbow flicks nor other unrealistic party tricks) link feints in one flexible control scheme, meaning that you do not need to just select four repetitive link feints out of a total of about 30 dribbling repetitions, meaning that you can use plenty of dribbling options on the pitch without compromising the simplicity of the controls, that is a key area that would get me interested in the game.

Just doing the trademark sole-of-the-foot dribbles that Riquelme did at the peak of his career (as can easily be seen on YouTube), would be too good for me to not buy the game. So far, sole-of-the-foot dribbling is very one dimensional, with the classic drag-back as the only option, it would be cool if Konami can make it possible to drag the ball (with the sole of the foot) from side to side, from back to side, etc, as that would be a good source of entertainment for the people like myself, whom have grown out of the one dimensional design of running in straight lines all the time due to the lack of “organic” dribbling options.

So anyways, I would appreciate if you could dedicate some time to the dribbling controls and how it has improved in the demo. Take care man, and thanks for the effort.

  3. hiroshi11 says:

the demo is amazing the shooting was really improves as this was the me the most important issue in the gameplay.. i hope that they gonna add some more elements till the release of the game becuase they have 2 months for some slight improvements which can only make the game better

  4. Gola says:

How does this one touch stuff work. Thought there’d be a training mode..
Anyone know what buttons do what.. On xbox

  5. BrZyTwA (nyc) says:

    @ Gola

During a match pause and go to ‘command list’, all the controls (old and new) are in there

  6. KingSuarez says:

Love the gameplay BUT the manual shooting system is soooo broken. How can the “assisted” shooting give you a result closer to the input you put in with the controller than the full manual system. I took shots with manual and the system gave me the Konami shot, you know the one where they decide “hey you shooting to the wrong corner mate, we will help you out and send the shot to the other corner” obviously when shooting to the far post my stick has to be aiming to the far corner and it is, so how can the shot go near post????

The full manual is basically another “assisted” system of shooting which you have to learn. I wont because the shots are not the shots I choose and the angles you want dont correlate to the angles you have to find using the stick. For example: Shooting to the far corner the stick should be further towards true north or south not closer to the centre circle. I know the angle your player is shooting from is important but it does not work at all.

They still havent fixed the quick free kick, why Konami shouldnt decide for you whether you can take one.

  7. Amateur says:

I wanted to mention that with the so-called “manual” shooting and passing, that the function of the L2 button needs to be different when you play with zero assistance (or in other words, full manual).

** When playing with semi-assistance: the L2 button should be pressed in order to execute “manual” passing.

** When playing with zero-assistance (full manual): the L2 button should not be pressed for any type of “manual” pass, and instead, the L2 button should be pressed in order to execute semi-assisted passing.

By doing that, the L2 button remains useful irrespective of the assistance settings, but most importantly, if you are playing with zero assistance, you will not need to forcibly satisfy the stupid procedure of pressing the L2 button in order to perform “manual” passes even though all passes should be manual considering the fact that you are playing with zero assistance.

That is a problem that I can confirm that PES12 had, that even when playing with zero assistance, I still needed to press the L2 button whenever I wanted to execute a “manual” long ball. And because I personally find that pressing the L2 button whenever you want to execute a “fully-manual” pass, is a rather non-intuitive procedure, I found that PES12 did favored the semi-assisted users over the fully-manual users.

I can only hope that Konami offers more intuitive “manual” passing controls with PES13, if I could execute a fully manual pass without the necessity of pressing the L2 button, that would be a welcomed tweak for me. The L2 button should work both ways: for semi-assisted users, the L2 button should offer fully-manual passing; however, for fully-manual users, the L2 button should offer semi-assisted passing.

Can anybody confirm if PES13 suffers from the same problem?

  8. SweetDIsposition says:

This is without doubt the most technically realised football game ever made…..naturally some will still complain but already pes2013 is perfectly balanced.

The new one touch system is simple and intuitive and we now have a proper long ball that you can hit into the corners for forwards and wingers.

This is perfect striker re-engineered and I’ve taken to it like a duck to water…if you don’t get pes2013 then you don’t understand footie.

While visually like pea12,the gameplay has been taken to another level…this finally is the promised land.

  9. TinklerBu says:

New year , same old little tweaks but the robotic animations stay the same. This is the MAIN issue. We are in 2012 and still we have outdated animations. Am I the only one who sees this!!!!??? And trust me, come the final version , or the second demo, there going to be more changes …….for the worst.
This is Konami for you. And you lot will NEVER learn.

  10. KingSuarez says:

Why is the finesse/control shot so loopy????

  11. Dave O says:

@ Amateur – What do you think of the delay in dribbling response times? I actually like it. For example… I received a pass into the box coming from the left side of the field, and found myself one vs one with a defender, about central to the net and just inside the 18 yard box… In PES 2012 my player would have received the pass in a very one dimensional way, and I would have had to contend with the defender and of course the keeper, but with the new dribbling I was able to fake them both out with one slight move of the stick. It’s a move that I would do all the time in real footy, and now it’s finally part of the game. It’s hard to explain but basically as the ball came to me from the left side, I faked to turn towards the left, but basically just took the ball further right and smashed it into the net (with Klose). I’ve never seen anything like this in PES and I know it’s nothing like what you are looking for, but I think that there being a bit less direct high-response dribbling makes things less one dimensional, if only slightly.

  12. KingSuarez says:

Scoring far post with manual you have to place the stick closer to the centre rather than true north or south. How is that manual? With “assisted” I place the stick to the top corner, not too deep, and I will get my far corner, and depending on the body position of the striker it will be on target or not. The shooting in pes 12 was bad because to get it in the far corner all you needed to do was place it exactly 90 degrees i.e true north or south. To hit a clean shot at goal in 13 is WAY to easy. Body position does not matter as much as it should.

  13. Matteuws says:

Same old **** scripting that you didn’t mention. Just tell us your experience when the AI scored in you 25 matches. Tell us how a simple through ball can’t go in a key moment but just go 1 meter while you pressed it hard.
That what I wanted Konami to address, TAKE OUT SCRIPTING FOR GOD’S SAKE. LET THE AI play it fair and square. Even the double tap on X doesn’t respond when the AI knows it time to SCORE no matter what you do.

For me I knew the Player AI, Def First Touch, Def dribble or whatever new was going to be a game changer and I like the keepers way better than PES 2012. But the same irritants SCRIPTING of AI goals or stopping you to do what you want to do just so you don’t score is garbage = NO FULL CONTROL.

I’m surprise you didn’t even talk about the scripting issue, but anyway I’m happy and enjoying all new stuff, but the OLD SCRIPTING issue doesn’t excite me to take out my money very soon.

  14. dennisBergkamp10 says:

Downloaded the demo but didn’t get a chance to play it, stuck @ the inlaws place. All I have is the vita and damn I hate that there’s no pes out for it!

After reading the posts I don’t know what to think, my question is, if the number of gaming sites say that Pes13 is out of this world and the public post that the games still crap….. who’s go their head screwed on right?

  15. BrZyTwAa (NYC) says:

r u guys having any luck with the first-touch dribbling ? how are things going for u in that department? ..personally i’m having a hard time figuring it out

  16. Amateur says:

    @ Dave O

I cannot play the demo due to it not being available on the US store, but to my surprise I have heard extremely positive reactions from people whom have been extremely objective (in my opinion) in the past, so that was a pleasant surprise, though of course, I would like to play the demo myself.

As for what you mentioned, well, to be fair, I do not expect a revolution from one year to another, but going by what you’re saying, PES13 sounds like the first step towards a definite change in direction. I mean, delayed response times is something that was greatly needed, hopefully this creates more time and space, to actually think about how you want to dribble with the ball or how you want to execute the standing tackle, as opposed to the linear design of instant (and unrealistic) response times.

Can you say the same thing about standing tackles? I mean, for example, if the ball carrier looks like he is going to move towards the right, yet you as a defender think that he will actually move towards the left: do you have a level of control over the actual direction of the standing tackle? Thus making it a balanced experience? Or does the standing tackle system, only covers the timing of the tackle, with the direction of the tackle being automatic or assisted?

  17. Dave O says:

^It’s not a revolution at all IMO, but judge for yourself… As for tackling, I can’t say, need to try that myself and see.

  18. Kennykenken says:

love the manual controls. I play on full manual so i don’t have to use L2 and I turn off the arrow..GOLDEN

I really think that this will be a great PES 2013, I really enjoyed the demo and the final result can only get better. The only thing I really don’t like is the stupid arrows on the field for manual passing, can anyone pleaseeeee tell me how to switch it of, please. Also I still don’t like the referee by kick-off still no movement at all, far from realistic.

Greetings to all PES fans, Juan, fan of Boca Juniors and pro evolution since the first edition Goal Storm.

  21. kennykenken says:

@Juan: at main menu go to options, personal data, assisted settings and from there you can turn off the arrows.

  22. InakZikaZeo says:

    @ TinklerBu
I hear you. Can not agree more.

  23. dennisBergkamp10 says:

Just played a handful of games, visually nothing has changed much. I’m having trouble grasping the 1st touch, I’m using R2 and the directional arrow, if I’m doing it right then, it doesn’t look very fancy.

Been playing on superstar with the passing on 2bars..not to bad, the defensive department feels different, not sure if I like it yet.

To sum up PES13…..if PES 6 and FIFA 12 had a baby, it would be PES 2013! LOL

Seriously it feels like pes6 going forward and similar to fifa12 defensivly.

  28. Rapid says:

Cheers Bergkamp. I bought PES 2012 and still play ML but only played on line once!

I play with all controls in fully unassisted. When I played on line it seemed the other player was fully assisted and ping ponged the ball upfield with no real effort or thought.

Same in FIFA, id play with semi manual controls but couldn’t get a game with other users as most people will play full Auto. Question is, in PES 2013 will there be options to play other people on line with exact or similar controls? Also is there an option on PES 2012 for similar control usage? If there is i’d try again.

I lost my first and only game on line and I stayed to the final whistle, wont reveal the score though!!

Really need to sort it out da game was 5/10 i play pes 10 more then any other game theres something wrong dont fill i got control of the players as much as i want to

  30. deadeye says:

tackling feels good, defense in general feels better. Shooting is a lot better, need to get used to it. Speed merchants are slowed down without loosing their touches. love the touches of better players when passing. Neat stuff so far.

What happen 2 sideway dribbling, can’t do it anymore, sack them all.

  32. dennisBergkamp10 says:

    Just a thought:

FIFA is all about scoring goals, how often do you get a draw between mates…unlike in pro evo were its not filled with ridiculous scorelines but packed with tense tactical play.

  33. ramses says:

    Master league improvements pes 2013
Before i start with my wishes for de master league I first want to state that the gameplay is the most important element for a football game and that I’m very pleased to see the gameplay that Konami have created for pes 2013 this after playing only 10 match on the first demo.
No let’s start to talk about the master league. The ML is the most important feature for me I estimate that I spend 70% of my pes playtime playing ML . To generalize the master league is a simple basic concept choose your favorite team or a lower rep team and make them world beaters. Now let me make an enumeration of the improvements that I think are necessary for the ML in pes 2013
    1. Training
I think is was in pes 2011 where you could assign a certain amount of point to 5 areas. How must points you could assign depended on how good the trainer was. Furthermore you could train them on new position and teach them new skills like the flip flap. This would come at the expense of the regular training because it would stop until the learned the new skill or position. I found it to be a very satisfying way to train you player because you could really shape your young talents. In pes 2012 the introduced the prehistoric rock paper scissors method whereby you could shape your player individually. I would really like to see the old system back.

    2. Club reputation and player acquirement
Also in pes 2011 you had a simple but transparent system of club reputation. A club was graded S/a/b/c /d and this would affect which player you could buy. I liked this system because you could buy player depending on your reputation. In pes 2012 is about how good your scout is and there isn’t a transparent reputation system. This results in me not being able to buy a division 2 player even though I was playing champions league atm. So It became very limited in my player choice. I want to create a team based on my ideas for example you have an Italian team and want to buy as much Italian talent as possible. Of course with the restriction that you can’t buy players from club with a better reputation them yourself. This is very frustrating in pes 2012

    3. Regenerated players
It’s a small thing but it really annoying being able to buy a certain 17 year old striker named T. henry for free with an overall stat of 85. I want a challenge and where is the fun in buying a young player how is already at his top. I think they should create an option whereby you can choose if you want regenerated player.

I’m a player how likes a challenge when building my squad in ml. I understand the there are many player that don’t want as big of a challenge. I think that the ml as to provide a good ml experience for both types of players. I would really like to know you opinion about the above stated improvement.

  34. Lucifer666 says:

I am similar I spend a hell of a lot of time on the ML part of the game and for me they need badly to vamp it up and overhaul the mode. I thought last year was the beginning of something new when Konami added in the cut scenes of the managers office, etc but they did it so badly that it became so annoyingly repetitive and p*ssed off most fans. As we all know they have stated now that they are taking them out for PES2013 which I have to admit seriously irritated me aswell because I think it was a good idea just badly implemented and instead of them saying ‘What went wrong with it?’ or ‘what was it that people didn’t like about it?’ they just decided to give up on it. Yet what was wrong with the cut scene feature is generally what I think Konami do wrong with the ML overall…They don’t make it evolving enough! I find myself about four or five seasons down the line after winning everything where it all has just becomes repetitive nothing new or different happens. I want to be able to spend millions in buying a
great player or great prospect only for him to get a career crushing injury or buy a ‘squad member’ player and suddenly find he has become one of my greatest players. A highlights show with presenters forthnightly or monthly that discusses the competitions, the varied teams and players including yours and does a ‘goal of the month’ thing. Another thing that would make it more evolving and something lots of people want is to be able as a manager to move clubs either by your own choice or being sacked by the chairman or board
As for the training I think it will be different again this year, going by an earlier feature trailer it looks like Konami will be melding the shop point system into the training options in other words you buy equipment such as weights, cycling machines or a ‘keepy uppie ball’ to improve certain aspects in training whether this operates for your whole team or you have to apply it to individual players I don’t know but I think I would prefer the latter. Personally I think it would be much more fulfilling training wise if once you bought one of these items and decided on using them that it cut to a training field or gym where your individual player is with the item and you have to mash certain buttons to get him to level up or improve showing him using the said item like alot of other games do.

As for player aquirement I never realised you couldn’t buy a division 2 player if your team is ranked significantly better or higher than a d2 side? Probably because I have never tried to do it before…it definitely seems crazy!…. though I can undertand the restriction of perhaps buying from a bigger ranked club though still there should be the option of maybe a player who is not playing well for them being sold to a lower club.
Another feature that again was omitted (I am so sick of Konami taking stuff out of PES) is the option of trading players during negotiations it used to come in very handy at times and for some reason that escapes me they decided to remove it?

I agree also on the option of Regenerated players if you don’t want it you should be able to turn it off

Commentary is also another way that can enhance the ML and I know that may sound mad or some may think what has that got to do with the ML however if you had a commentary that evolved with your particular ML game and had it referring to a new player you have bought as he makes his debut or it discussed your financial difficulties or when you change strategies or when one of your strikers has a goal drought, or a player coming back from a long term injury, or loan transfer period, or even have it criticise your tactics or suggest what they think you should be doing, etc. To me its all about making it real and making you (the player) feel like your managing a real side in real competitions that matter

  35. hiroshi11 says:

i thinj you should be able to change teams in ML.. for example you take a small team like i dont know wba or wigan and then you play a excellent season where you finish 6th or 7th and then teams like manu chelsea or arsenal approach you to be their new manager and so on..

  36. Pro1 says:

The demo is definitely the best PES to date. The gameplay has finally slowed down a lot, which is good. Passing is much more realistic.

One thing that puzzles me is that Pro Evolution used to be known for the player individuality and player stats, yet in 2013 it still has no stat ratings for tackling. Fifa has had it for years now. ( Whether Fifa’s tackling stats actually make a difference in the game is another argument, but at least tackling is rated so that Ronaldo does not seem to have the same tackling ability as Ferdinand ) In PES, What this means is that real life defenders who are ace at tacking cannot have that attribute recreated in the game. A good defender should not only be recognised by how close he marks his opponents, but also how well he tackles on a scale of 1-100. Slide tackling should also be rated at 1-100 rather than the player being a good slide tackler or not.

The AI’s quick free kicks are still bugged. Most of the times the opponent AI decides to take a quick free kick but then changes its mind and the scene changes to a regular free kick. The game should just flow like it does in Fifa.

The player movement sometimes seams even smoother than Fifa’s. However, the animation transitions are still behind the Fifa animation engine.

What more can I say. Konami is coming back slowly but surely. I hope that after EA’s anti-competitive practices, which have recently landed them in a bit of trouble regarding the lawsuit over certain exclusive sports licensing deals, that they will tread carefully in future and we will see an end to the monopoly over exclusive licensing in sports games.

I believe that half the people playing Fifa now would be playing Pro Evolution if EA did not make it so difficult for Konami to acquire licensing of teams or even the freedom to call Pro Evolution an Official FIFA licensed product.

On a somewhat related note: I can’t wait to see the end of the Porsche and Ferrari exclusive licensing in motor sport games where you have to buy a certain racing game to play Porsche cars but another racing game to play Ferrari’s. It should be that you can choose to play the BEST racing game which includes Porsches and Ferraris. Exclusive licensing deals are not in the best interest of the consumers.

Awesome demo so far and game is only 40% complete in it!! No wonder why it is already winning praise and awards at shows.

Biggest improvement for me is actually defending. PES2012 was broken in this area. The AI would skin my defender everytime which was really annoying (and no it wasn’t how bad I was!!) Loving the directional arrow for manual passing as well. I’m sure purists would tut at having it in but for me it opens up so many more opportunities and makes the game flow in so many different ways.

Can’t wait for the next installment of the demo.

My one gripe, which I’m hoping there will be a fix for soon, is that you can’t save your profile once you have taken all of the assists off so it means everytime I load up the game i have to disable them all again!!

  41. Roberto carlos says:

They should not publish this game. FIFA is a far superior product.

  42. MagicaRoma says:

How can they say “superb player ID” when they only look at the top50 players and top 3 clubs of all nations?

Again in the demo: Borini a 66, wtf!!!!

And I know it is still 2 months, but KONAMI NEVER has the not top players correct. I reckon Borini will suddenly be a 80+ now that he has signed for Liverpool but had he stayed with Roma, surely it would still have been a 66 as EVERY year it is the same….

Apart from the topteams/players, KONAMI is NOT interested in player ID, so many mistakes in stats is just laziness/lack of REAL knowledge of football.

FIFA almost always has the players SPOT ON, even the lesser known ones, KONAMI not so please dont come up with “player ID”, just say “” player ID for topteams/players in the world, the rest we cant be bothered about”

  43. hiroshi11 says:

    @MagicaRoma

i completely agree player ratings are a joke.. ronaldinhoo 90 on amf??? thats not serious
andy caroll better than mario gomez and so on

  44. Roberto says:

My first impressions were that this was a load of crap,BUT!, I have changed my mind after playing more games.
It seemed ths was just a rehash of 12 and to all intents and purposes it is but the game feels more solid and the player animations are far superior.
Konami needs to now work on the aesthetics of the game ie; the floodlight game lighting needs tweaking it is a little bit glary.
The turf is good although it need some slider scale to get it as green as you like.
The dopy “live broadcast” cam is still there and needs to be replaced with the PES11 broadcast cam.
The Nets definitely need sorting, they are unresponsive and sluggish and further more they need to be whiter and not grey as they seem to be at the moment. The tag line for the game is “the game just got real” well! not for the nets it hasn’t. There will be some of you saying “not more net talk” but for every action there is a reaction and these nets don’t react and sometimes spoil the “beauty” of the goal.
Some one mentioned the camera should have manual zoom/height and swing and I agree to that, perhaps if Konami introduced that element than they would’nt need the other cams as you could adjust them to your own taste.
All in all the demo IS very playable and hopefully the finished article will be even better.

  49. Unquestionably believe that which you stated. Your favourite reason seemed to be on the web the simplest factor to consider of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed even as other people think about concerns that they just do not recognise about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thank you
