Whatever happens in the next few weeks, nothing will take away from the fact that Konami have done an amazing job this year. 6 months ago, Konami began to build for PES 2013. The PES team claimed this year was different. There was no bullshit, just honesty. The problems of previous PES games on current gen were addressed and we were all told they would be rectified. While this has been a tactic in gaming for years, most notably in series that change very little yearly, there was something different about Konami this time.
- PES 2013 would have a longer development time.
- There was a new development team, with Seabass moving on.
- It would go back to its hardcore roots.
As the months went on, details started to trickle out. PES 2013 would be fully manual, the goalies would be improved, a brand new defensive system along with advanced AI.
To signal the change in direction, trailers were released showing world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo looking stunningly realistic showcasing PES 2013′s three new groundbreaking features, Player ID , PES Full Control and Proactive AI.
To address the Player ID and deft touch control, a few people have complained it is not unique enough. Dougie made an excellent point about average rated midfielders dancing around midfield with the deft touch control and I agree that Konami could tone this down a little bit. Its not game breaking though and to be honest its a tiny problem in terms of what the demo does right.
The Player ID is just being introduced this year and its a great start. I reckon PES 2014, aided by the new fox engine, will be a massive improvement for Player ID. As for PES 2013, I’m happy with the players captured. Seeing as the demo is a 60-70% build, I am excited to see the other 30-40%. Ronaldo feels brilliant along with Neymar, Terry and Pirlo. For anyone complaining about unrealistic player similarities, try playing fully manual. You will see a difference. Pirlo can slice the defence better than Scott Parker. Again, to me, its not an issue. The only way to capture every player perfectly is to motion capture every player in the game. That is impossible. At least in the foreseeable future. Imagine the cost?
The demo has had a great response overall and with gamescom only days away, PES 2013 is ready to explode. It seems PES 2013 will be out earlier than it has been in years with September 20th being rumoured as the release date in UK.
At Gamescom, I think we will get a definite release date, full details on MLO, Master League and BAL and also some surprises The PES Team have kept up their sleeve. Its shaping up to be a glorious return for PES and there hasn’t been a better time for us gamers.
What are your thoughts on Player ID and the release date rumors?
