As I’ve stated earlier, I’ve only had the game for a couple of days, so am in no position to offer a full and definitive review of the game yet. I am going to try my best to put something together for Thursday evening inbetween my day job and social life.
In the meantime, I am available to provide answers to basic questions about the game now. I’ll try to organise my thoughts in sections for you to ask more questions about up to Thursday. I don’t want to say too much about various subjective topics such as shooting, passing, dribbling etc as I’ve not formed enough of an opinion on them yet and don’t want to mislead anyone. It would be completely remiss of me to present the game in either a good or bad light without having the strength of conviction in my thoughts.

That’s the full list of the actual gameplay modes. I’ve not got time to go into Editing mode – apologies there.
But first thing to note – I can confirm that League mode is gone.
Hugo Ribeiro – Sorry but you can’t play a standalone Europa League mode.
Master League mode:
I can also confirm that there is a new menu option called “Items” which comprises of:
Shop:There are 18 different elements you can purchase to help boost player stats. Items such as Stop Watch, Free Weights, Mini Goals and Training Poles. Once you purchase these items they need to be equipped in order for them to take effect.
*** UPDATE ***
I would like to add that all of these additions – the boots, the item list etc – they don’t have to be played around with. You can choose to ignore them completely and just play as you normally would in ML mode. You aren’t forced to pick boots for your players. It’s about indulging yourself in finer detail, or just continuing as you were – you have a choice.
Item List:

Equipping Items (shows all equipped items)
Boots (Shows a list of the boots you have available. It appears to be the case that only ONE player can wear a single pair of boots in your Item List. Just how this will work out, I have no idea, but just providing facts and figures for now)
I haven’t followed the arguments or furore over boots from WENB, so am not sure what the issues are. As it stands, given my limited experience with Master League so far, it seems like the direction taken in the game is aimed at providing more immersion in the daily training and dealings with footballers. I’m not sure if this feature can be toggled on or off as yet either, though I don’t think it can. Perhaps there could be room to get this level of immersion set as an option later, but just reporting things as they are.
Whilst on Master League, a feature which I can give a huge thumbs up to is in the Negotiations area. The Scouting Report area for player stats info shows a percentage chance of purchasing all players. This is a very useful feature as it means you can focus your time on realistic targets rather than waste valuable transfer period time chasing players who won’t sign for you.
Feel free to fire more questions my way, but please bear in mind that questions on passing/shooting etc are more difficult for me to answer at this stage definitively. I would like to add that I am currently enjoying my PES sessions, and am building up my list of likes and dislikes to provide a balanced review. I can’t go into them right now as I don’t want to prejudice my review, or to send out the wrong signals.

LEAGUE MODE GONE !!!!!!!! WTF !!!?!!?!?????
This was the single best mode for myself and my friends to play offline…EVERY YEAR we would meet up at someones house and play 3,4,5 man leagues…home and away fixtures….it was AWESOME!!! …and now its gonee…WTF !!!?!!? …y do they always have to remove somethinggg…smh

What’s the difference between regular master league mode and league mode? Both are in master league, is it just default players and real team players?
I won’t be buying this years edition if the whole Master League ‘magic boots’ carry on is unable to be turned off. I’m probably a minority here but I only play Master League mode, so this boots carry on will ruin Master League for me. Just be sticking with PES 2012! And League mode being taken out is completely dumb too.
Hi Dougie I’ll wait to read your full review on Thursday but for me it’s not looking good….as for the scouting report feature, that’s already a feature more or less in past ML games if memory serves it’s usually the scout that gives an assessment of your likelihood on landing whatever player you want before you even have to negotiate….the percentage thing might make it easier I suppose but for me it’s nothing overly new or fantastic.
I generally only play ML aswell Andy and I feel the exact same way
Reviews of Pes is starting to come out now. They are all very good even from reviewers who criticised Pes in the past. I like the sound of all of them. For the first time(so far) everyone agrees about the quality of the game. I am delighted !!! Pes…come here…come to daddy
Can you choose more than one team in ML? Or can à human player take controls of the opposing team in ML?
Does this mean I can’t play the Brazilian league (or any other) ??? I would find that very strange and I would even rethink buying PES 2013, last year they took out round robin and now this, a disgrace.

Quick thoughts :
1. The gameplay is fantastic. The reviews are mostly positive and rightly so. PES 2013 makes FIFA’s gameplay look out-dated and simple. However FIFA is still by far a better package and polished product. PES is a real ‘purist’ game.
2. The inclusion of ‘magic boots is baffling. Konami have potentially ruined the single greatest single-player mode in sports games. I cannot fathom why this was implemented. It nullifies the player I.D feature and makes the mode seem cheap and stupid. Very, very disappointed. The backlash this has caused is justified ‘boot-gate’ should send a clear message to Konami.
3. Lastly, I for one cannot imagine why there is no league mode?!?! Who or what is the reasoning or thinking behind some of Konami’s decision making. Not everyone has Multi-player access More so, What the point of having a fully licensed La Liga and Brazilian league when we cannot experience it?! Anger, Disappointment and confusion prevail and it saddens me that so many are happy to just accept this.
Do players out on loan in real life return to their clubs? Such as Fabio to QPR from United and Carroll to West Ham from Liverpool.

Can you tell me who in the community voted for the abolition of the league mode? Judging by what I’ve read not very many. I myself don’t like master league because if I wanted a management game I’d buy one.Also can you tell me what all the fuss of obtaining Brazilian league/Spanish league stadia was all about when we can’t even experience it? I’m sick to the back teeth of Konami and their “they can do without this” attitude,they take out all the good stuff and replace it with crap,I bet all the stoneheads are still in the game.
People criticise FIFA but you don’t find them taking stuff out,no.they find a winning formula and make it BETTER.
This year FIFA have actually nailed the game judging by their demo and to be fair Konami’s demo’s were very good,but, to take out the league mode is insane,why did’nt they take out the cup comp instead and because of this reason I will not be buying. Goodbye Konami it was nice while it lasted.
I understand all the anger about konami omitting the league . At least they should release the game heavily discounted…at least!! But unfortunately that ain’t gonna happen.
The only consolation is that the gameplay and animations have NEVER been better than this iteration of Pes . But , I guess, something gotta give!
Am still positive about next gen though. With the new engine and hardware resources, every desired feature can be crammed in without compromising on frame rates or performance. Unfortunately the wait is gonna be too long, and too much, for some.
Omission of League option is baffling, it’s one of the most basic options!!!
On the other hand, a question for the ones who got their hands on the game. Is it just me or are there way too many goals per match? I played three games which ended 2-2, 5-3, and 5-4, that’s 21 goals in 3 games!!! I don’t remember either of the two demos having such a huge amount of goals. Now I know how Zdenek Zeman feels. :P
I have to say I understand where people are coming from here, it does always feel like Konami give with one hand only to constantly take away with another. I don’t generally play the league mode but it definitely shouldn’t be taken out, crazy decisions again by the Japanese group. People in Japan mustn’t be overly keen on the league mode as I think their home market has alot to do with these kind of decisions and they must have been confident they could get away with it there
I like pro evo every year and I have no idea what this magic boot thing is, But I dont really care. I love playing master league and especially MLO and would like to know about the MLO contracts. Are they the same as last year because I liked that? I am really looking forward to playing on Friday if anyone wants a game let me know!
The reason konami have kept giving with one hand and taking with another every single year is because they have been gettin away with it. They still do good sales year in year out. People complain but the product sells.
Look at last year lame Pes 2012, it went platinum didnt it?
They will only stop doin it if they see a gigantic drop on sales . But they don’t . People like the product. And if they liked the last few Pes . Then this year they will like it more. So the taking with one hand and giving with the other will carry on unfortunately.
I have been reading some of the reviews and ratings for PES2013 and I do question, ‘who writes them?’ Yes the gameplay has improved but there should be so much more than that when reviewing the game…I honestly think alot are written by people who don’t play alot of PES to begin with, hell some, even when referring to the Master League were talking about the cut scenes making out they were new to this year unaware that they were introduced last year? Also very few if any mention anything about the rpg type changes in the ML? Which I find astounding, contrary to what some may think the ML is a huge draw for many fans of the series as it adds longevity to the whole game
I am also amazed that they haven’t ever included the select a region or four teams and get a random squad made up of those players for an exhibition match. My friends and I thrashed this out every time we got together. They had it years ago, stripped it and never bought it back… that’s why I can’t believe then done it with League mode too!
On a massive plus… the game is brilliant. After three years playing FIFA, I am happy to return to my PES roots as they have nailed much of the gameplay – glorious.

Whats up with this day one DLC? Its available with the purchase of every game? Do you have to pay more to get it? Whats in it? Its only the La Liga 20 Stadiums or theres more? So many questions…

I LOVE the gameplay.
I think konami realised that not too many people play the league and thought…good, we can free the resources the leagues take for the extra features they included such as the 20 Brazilian teams, the extra animations , the boot feature…etc.
Or do you guys thought they would just be able to keep on adding features welly nelly.
They can’t do that with the current technology. Next generation hardware may be but not this current technology.
Konami should shed a light on this with all honesty. I am sure they gonna be a massive backlash .

Excuse me if im missing something but, is this ‘league mode removed’ thing 100% confirmed or just a rumor, i havent heard of it anywhere but here and i can’t think of any reason for Konami to do such a weird change. I haven’t heard of anyone talking about Community being included or excluded, this is by far the feature i use the most, as 20 + friends use to play in my Xbox. Besides that, the Demo is maybe the best PES i’ve played since the first One. I’ve already ordered 2 copies because im gonna give 1 to my 12 yo nephew who loves to play it too.

I’m happy they have sorted the problems with shooting especially.
I’m going to buy the game although i’m bit depressed about league mode going, also worried i’m not going to like master league with the crazy training and boots making average players great.
What i’m more pissed about is last five years been reading on certain website pesgaming, wenb that we can make a difference? Where the Jewell did we make a difference. They put magic boots in master league and got rid of league mode with no explanation. Did I miss that poll vote for pes to be more like final fantasy.
If I here anymore of this try it and making out it is not a negative but something different. Basically its made master league crap. I’m not getting into that mode **** it, and no league mode so its basically cup competition or online.

A realistic football game for once with unrealistic master league, shame. Id be playing for man utd now if I only got the rite boots as a kid. all the big pes sites should be having a go at konami for this not making excuses for them. We paying forty quid for this. Yeah you can keep your whole team looking generic with everyone wearing black boots and then allow other teams who will attain the boots (along with training items bought) have an unfair advantage against your team..yeah that will work???
Magic boots in ML was bad enough, but to get rid of league mode is the 18-wheeler that breaks the camel’s back.
Gameplay is fantastic this year, a true joy to play. I was playing both demos till my thumbs got raw and really looking forward to this game. However, Konami have gone and taken out two major game modes and reworked another against the community’s wishes. Without Community and League, that’s two less modes to enjoy the gameplay in. With the boots situation in ML, that takes away the authenticity of that mode and makes it more RPG rather than team management. BAL should’ve been the only mode to let you earn boots and purchase training equipment.
I will not be purchasing PES 2013, the first time since Winning Eleven 7 for me. I will purchase FIFA13, the first time since FIFA 2004, unless Konami come out by release date next week (25/9 here in the States) saying that league and community will be DLC soon. I, personally, like creating the Bundesliga, having a go of 5-8 seasons on ML, than creating a fake MLS and going a few seasons in League mode and use community for playoffs, US Open cup, and CONCACAF champions league.

What other teams? CPU or Online opponents? You talking MLO here? I don’t see it being mentioned in MLO, only in ML. Surely CPU can’t attain these items.

Its still uncertain whether the boots thing is in MLO but I was referring to off line ML and yes I’m afraid all CPU teams also start off with all players with black boots and then gradually earn boots just like the player controlled team.
I got the game too and i started the BAL(Become A Legende) mode and i got some pretty cool boots and i really like to equip them how do i actually do that?
