So In the wake of the World Cup, I got an urge to play some football games again and dusted off an old template for a french target man-esque striker that I used to play a while back. Why french? Well come on, they need someone to help 'em out after this debacle. Damn you Domenech!
Had a pretty good scout game, nothing too fancy. Almost had an assist and we're instrumental in setting up another goal (again, no assist though). Still rated in at 7.0, which I found quite acceptable.
In the past, I have generally gone for the highest ranked team during the initial signing. But I figured I'd join the lowest this time, might be easier to get on the first team. Said and done, packed my bags for Boulogne the same day - club; US Boulogne, one of the lowest ranked teams of Ligue 1.
The training matches were... odd. I played really, really well with the reserves but every time I got the chance to play ball with the big boys, things went to hell. The reserve team is just a better side, it seems. Eventually though, I got selected, happy times.
Played about four or five matches as a sub, two of which went absolutely to hell (5.5 rating), one mediocer (6.5) and two really good games (7.5 and 8.0, coming on to score and assist in both games). Then I got chosen to start. Now, Boulogne plays a 5-4-1, a really stupid ass formation when you're trying to be an offensive force. I rarely, if ever, had my teammates with me when I got the ball, which meant a lot of holding, slow running or just back-passing. But I adjusted and it actually went quite smoothly.
However, I moved on Tolouse when the offer came. Phew.
Had a good run with Tolouse, eventually finished at 6th place and I had scored 7 goals, assisting as many. I was positively surprised to see that the French national team had picked me up for the World Cup - I was NOT expecting to play for the national team until atleast EURO 12 and even that was a stretch. But I mean, the team played Cissé upfront most of the time and Benzema and Gignac wasn't even on the team so I guess the AI manager had some weird plan in his artificial head.
The World Cup would prove to be pretty damn succesful. Aside from a draw agains't Romania in the group and a very, very nervy game agains't Italy (2-0 down at half-time, 2-3 by the end of 120 minutes, phew), France had a pretty easy time. The final opponents would be Russia though (they beat Brazil in the semi's, imagine that). Again, a nervy match that went to over-time ended with two quick goals by Cissé (wasn't such a bad idea bringing him then) and myself in the 110+something minutes. And France was champions, oh joy.
Samir Nasri scored the most goals with 4 and won Player of the Tourny, I assisted the most with 2. We both got chosen for the Team of the Tourny.
During the WC though, I got offered a contract with a long-time french favorite side - Paris St-Germain. I expect to be staying at the club for a solid couple of years before moving on, because it is a side that is competitive enough to challenge for the Europa League, as well the domestic cup and league.
BAL is still a blast
