Players do make runs all the time, you just need to keep your eyes open for them
Also tinkering with your Formation and 'Team Style' has a lot to do with how frequent they make runs.
Also it depends on you passing it about and teasing a defender out of position, if you do then an attacking player is more likely to run in to the gap left, you just have to spot it to play the through ball to them
