I feel like you're right. It seems to have been more than a year since I stopped training the Speed Merchant card, but the XP bar is still 1/4 full. It would be nice to be able to unlearn or remove certain player cards if you decide you don't want the skill anymore.

I've got 4 games to play before I reach the end of the 2016 season. My player started off as a 70 overall, and I've gained about 8 points overall each season. I'm not using any boosts, other than my boots, which even when I unequip them I'm still rated 100. I've won man of the match roughly 45...

As an update, there are 42 pairs of boots. Once you unlock them all, you will win duplicate pairs for each subsequent time you win man of the match.

I just reached 100 yesterday. The only boost I'm using is the boost that I get from my boots. I use the Nike Tiempo Masterful Class (blue) boots.

Make sure that the team you're playing for plays a formation that includes LWF, otherwise you're probably not going to be picked. Also, look at the formation and learn a position (costs 500 points) that the team needs and hopefully once you learn the position, you'll get some games.

I don't understand why your agent is in close contact at all times either. The manager is the only one who should be speaking with you regularly. The only time your agent should come in is if you've asked him to try to get you transferred.
