The numbers on the pitch refer to teamwork. Edit your team and formation in the master league menu, not while setting up before the match.

I think I had a similar problem at first. Try updating your game through the download option in the system settings menu.

There is a crack for the 1.4 version. I'm not sure if it's against the rules here so I'll refrain from posting links, but I'm positive you can find it.
