ADSL speed test/pes4 performance issues

http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp

Just a test that I think we should all do every now and again. What this test does is that it gives you a real time breakdown and comparison in download and upload speeds.

The reason why this should be done, is that it will give you the ACTUAL speeds and not your ISP capable speeds i.e. 256/512/1mb etc. You will get the speed that your connection is running at NOW.

Right now my connection should be:

1024 down
256 up

Actual speeds as of 14.15 - 05/12/04 are:

744 down
97 up

The poor speeds are due to my ISP carrying out maintenence work on their servers and hopefully it will be resolved soon.

Remember once the test is completed post up in this thread the ACTUAL figure, that is what your connection is running at. Just do it in a similar format to how i did it. This way we can identify connection issues if there are any and whose connection is under performing.

Damo, damn good speeds you got!

Ok, just a point about Upload speeds and how they potentially affect performance causing lag issues. I think what happens when a client connects to the host in pes4, it is the upload that is causing problems. The host's data is being sent upstream to the client, who can only download that data as fast as it is being sent. So if any of us are suffering from poor upload speeds, this I believe WILL cause lag.

The amount of lag will depend on how low the uptream figure is at. I think if many of us can hit the peak of 256 up, then lag should be minimal. This is in theory of course, and the reality of it, depends onhow much these issues are down to Konami's programming and handing of the X box LIVE as a medium. It is quite clear to me that we are connecting to each other via peer to peer, and this is causing the problems. By connecting peer to peer, connections need to be pretty much in sync with each other.

Think file sharing programs. Now you may have a 1mb connection, but you come across a user who is on a 56k modem. Eventhough you have a fast connection, he is restricted in what he can send up, meaning you will probably get download rates of 5-10kb/s which means getting a 4mb file will take some time.

Apply this to gaming terms in real time, and if your opposite number is not sending out the data quick enough, try as you may, regardless of how fast your line is, you will suffer from lag. Now this is just a rough analysis of what i think is going on. I think if we can determine each other's average connection speeds, we may be able to recognise who wil potentially have a problem, and who should be ok. But as we have seen we are all pretty much getting probs as client, regardless of connection, so I dont know as to how far we can predict how we;ll all perform against each other. I hope this patch comes along and resolves this lag problem, or atleast dramatically minimise it, as it is unfortunate that we are not able as yet to establish a fair playing field when facing off against an opponant.

edit:

Downstream 916 Kbps (114.5 KB/sec) 989 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 173 Kbps (21.6 KB/sec) 186 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Ok, seems like my connection is almost back to normal speeds. Just the upload that is suffering a bit. Was just reading on the xbox live site, that the Upload does indeed have an impact on lag if you are hosting a game, and its said that good upload speeds are needed. So this is to everyone, pay more attention to this aspect of your connection. Try to monitor it regularly.

Also If you are hosting, like I think Zyg said he turned down some settings in game eg, commentry, stadium effects, etc, things improved. I would say to everyone to try this out especially when hosting. This means there is less data that needs to be exchanged, meaning it could cut down lag. I would say put the crowd on 1*, kill the commentry and stadium effects and see if that works.

Important note

Ok, one other thing, if you guys know you have a 256 upload speed, and are not getting near it, I would check the connection status on your ISPs website, or contact them as to why you are losing out so much, there usually will be a reason for this. In my case its all heavy traffic on my ISPs servers, so they are upgrading. Hopefullyl I can hit better speeds soon. But you guys should all check with your ISP if you have a 256 and are getting more like 110 or something, cos that is way off. I think the best to hope for is something like 190 up which is more or less as much as you'll get, especially from a 1mb connection. But if its down into the low 100s and less, then there is something up.

At the end of the day though, the ADSL network is flawed in that, all the users on your exchange share the connection, so if for example people are downloading and uploading alot of data at any one time (traffic), then everyone will suffer, especially online gamers where bandwidth is everything.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Predicted performance

This is just a rough working out, of predicted performance based on upload speed. Not really taking into account the download, since most people I imagine are over 512k+ meaning there is enough bandwidth on that side of things.

As the host-Client (lag suffered by client based on upload speed in kbps)

Below 100kbps - Choppy, quite alot of lag, Just about playable to totally unplayable depending on how low it is.

100-200kbs - On the top end of the scale Playable, intermittent lag. Comes and goes. Comes at crucial moments. At the bottom end, it's choppy, lots of lag, having to double press buttons, actions delayed.

200+ - Generally smooth, occasional lag, slight delay. playable.

(Note that these are jsut predicted and does not represent actual performance, however it is a reference guide to performance)

Ok, i'm back in business, hitting optimal speeds. Hopefully the game should play ok, I'll try to host a few tonight if anyone wants a game.

Downstream 926 Kbps (115.8 KB/sec) 1000 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Downstream 219 Kbps (27.4 KB/sec) 236 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 247 Kbps (30.9 KB/sec) 266 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Is this reasonable speed? Because I'm paying for 1MB

you'll never get true speeds because providers cap speeds

people on 10mb never get close to those speeds
