What is with all the 3 man defences. I mean, I know the game is lame from a defensive standpoint, but why adjust accordingly. I am a firm beleiver in the 4 man defensive line. Trust me, they have no problem getting down field. It drives me crazy!

Just yesterday I was doing the "amazing U" (This is basically passing the ball one step at a time back and forth through my back row of defenders to kill time) when all of a sudden my CB, after a pass to the RB, starts booking it upfield. I laughed sarcastically, but I was really annoyed. This happens all the time, especially when I am up 1-0 and there is no need.

I understand that playing 4 defenders in this game is pointless. But, it is a matter of principal. So, why all the 3 man d-lines?

I beg your pardon?
a lot of my old formations were made on pes3 and 4. i haven't been able to post many since 6 came out. in my later posts i have said that i use a back 4 probably around 95% of the time. nice rant, but you obviously haven't read most of the important bits. just for clarity, back 4 is king if you are playing 'proper' footy. the earlier pes were easier, thus you needed less defenders. try cb overlap for runs from deep. or tap r2 after a pass.

Hi JMZ,

I tried to search your thread (and others) and couldn't find an answer to the following question:

when you have a player's offensive arrow pointing to more than one direction - where will the player go? who defines it? is it random?

Cheers

hotgunner's winning tactic:
I'll recommend this formation to anyone who can defend, keep possession (especially in opponent's half) and play the offside trap very well. Works best against AI and single multiplayer. However, you'll find yourself ripped apart in team matches.

Default formation: 4-5-1
----------GK----------
-------CB---CB-------
-SB---------------SB-
-----CM--CM--CM----
-LM---------------RM-
---------CF-----------

Formation A: 2-3-5
----------GK----------
-------CB---CB--------
-----CM--CM--CM----
-WG--ST--CF--ST--WG-

Note: My SBs become WG and LM/RM moves to the ST role.

Formation B: optional. normally I'll go for a 5-4-1 with my lone striker as the left winger. Great way to defend and waste time.

How to use: Use the default when chasing for possesion. Change to formation A and pass your opponent to death. Formation B optional formation as u deem fit.

Extras: Play a high backline but lookout for counters especially if opponent attackers in their own half. You really have to keep possesion very well.

Feel free to comment. Give it a try and u'll be amazed.

There are still many secrets to this winning tactic. For those driven by winning, PM me for full details. I'll list a couple of advantages and disadvantages here.

Advantages of the 4-5-1 Default Formation:
1. A solid midfield to backup your defence. You might want to put 1 DM and 2 CM instead of 3 CMs if you think that'll help.
2. Plenty of options to pass to the midfield once you regained ball possession.

Disadvantages of 4-5-1:
1. Lone man upfront. Crossballs/long balls are not going to be that effective.
2. Can get a little too cramp. Remember to use the offside trap and push up your line.

Advantages of the 2-3-5 Formation A:
1. Wonderful attacking options. You could have potentially 8 players in the last third of your opponent's area at one time.
2. Pressure on the opponent's defence. For seasoned multiplayer players, you'll know time and time again of opponents wasting time by passing the ball in defence. A 5 man pressure will give them a run for their money. In addition, the offside trap can easily frustrate your opponents who after being deprived from the ball for so long tend to launch quick counter attacks. Watch your line though.

Disadvantages of 2-3-5:
1. Very vulnerable to counter attacks. Unless you're a brilliant one on one defender or know this formation really well and know how to supplement it with the 4-5-1 or a formation of your choice, you'll be in for a thumping.
2. Can be too predictable if you're playing multiplayer. Unless you have a great football gaming mind, using another formation (Formation B) can provide different options.

Have a great time!

4-3-3 always work for me
3-4-3 sux went u r playing a competition against a friend.... it might work against computer ...but again 4-3-3 is the most stable . use 4-4-2 depending on ur opponent formation in the master legue

For Every formation, there is a formation that can potentially outdo it. I never stick to one formation...i dotn know about u guys...but i like being able to adapt to whoever i play.

True, I've been playing PES for years and every time I think "Wooo THIS IS IT!", sooner or later I'll be tinkering again. Fortunately though I must say I think I've finally found one that genuinely compliments my game perfectly. As for adapting; whatever floats your boat but personally I only ever worry about my own formation, concentrate on my own game.

I agree, every team must have an identity or a style of play. An "identity" as i call it, is normally defined by what players a team has and the managers idea of good football. It must aim to maximise the potential of the players it has towards winning games eg. for the 66England team this was a 4-4-2, for the 2001Real Madrid team this was a 4-1-3-2 and for 2006Barcelona this was a 4-1-2-3. When you get the combination of using your players well in your best system you become good at pro, trust me.

However, if you play the same way forever it makes it easy for other teams to beat you because they get used to what you are doing eg. during 2005 season chelsea changed from the 4-3-3 to diamond 4-4-2. It is therefore important to be able to vary your style...this is where concentrating on your squad players comes in, because although they are not your first teamers so often have qualities that will help you win games by doing things different eg. Ole Gunner Solkjear for Man utd as a sub. I advice adopting an identity first, but also trying to do different things, trust me it makes it way harder for people to beat you at PRO. :)

I advice you to look at hotgunners posts because he clearly understands how formations work. when deciding your system understand how the formation works, then you will appreciate what your players can really do. Not like Sven and Macca who just play 4-4-2 coz its traditional...someone shold get the England coaches pro for christmas.

and another thing...if you agree with me give me a compliment in the form of a reputation point

The Brazillian way

Last night i watched the England Brazil game at wembley and for 90minutes i saw at leaste 6 different formations. They had the usual parts of a formation inplace eg. 4 defenders, 1 defensive midfielder and an out an out striker, but some of the forwards where simply all over the pitch and they were still far more effective than an organised England team. So here is my question, which would you take...

Organisation, Tactical Descipline, and predictebaility or
A slight bit of chaos, and unpredictability

Iv come to the conclusion that Brazil have some of the things i touched on in my last post. They do not really have a definite system, and in their case this is a good thing as it gives them unpredictebility. But they do have an identity, and this involves [ a minimal system while giving your most talented players freedom]. As a coach it would be a nightmare to prepare for them because eg. Kaka can play FD, WFD, AM and CM. Its really hard to play like they do on PRO because on Pro the game is based around having a system ie. the preset formations at the beginning of the game. However i would love to try emulate them in my game and so i would like to request anyone who reckons they can produce a similar chaotic formation to that of the brazillians to post it.

Food for thought - The brazillian "chaotic" system has landed them more world cups than any other nation. While the next best country Italy applies a more desciplined and organised system characterised by their defence. So do you reckon that with more practice aimed at developing your ability to use all the tricks possible on pro, you could employ the brazillian way?

to a certain extend brazil play total football, everyone does have specific roles, but these have little relation to a specific area of the park. man utd adopted a very similar system this season: a solid back four, two full backs providing attacking play on the wings, usually a holding player and two CM, or two holders and an AM. then the front three were completely interchangeable, giggs CR and rooney all swapping positions whenever neccessary.

i am hoping that when pro is developed for next gen consoles the AI will be good enough for all your players to make decisions and runs better, possibly allowing a total football like formation, which at the moment i don't think is possible

In effect, having a system say Englands 4-4-2, ruins the chances of having a team that has real movement in their passing, hence why England is so boring to watch. Iv also noticed...that a lot of England commentators talk about having width, i doubt commentators in other countries ever talk about it that way. I prefer movement to width, obviously you have to make use of space, but the best way to use width is always with movement.

and by the way, one thing that made me laugh was the difference in technique that brazillians have. Did anyone else notice that when a Brazillian had the ball with England players closing him down, he was better at retaining possesion under pressure, even when a difficult pass was made to him , a brazillian player is able to get the ball under control without losing ground, turning on the spot and moving forward, whereas sometimes when an England player had to control the ball he would knock it a few yards back with his first touch then collect it giving the Brazillians ample time to close them down.

Seriously, when we talk about technique we must not think technique is being able to make a pass...those brazillians have real technique. England has some work to do.

Quick visit. Here is a formation for all those who like a 4-4-2. I used Violents handy flash app posted earlier.
I normally use something like this against a 4-3-3, like Barcelona or Chelsea. The DMF covers the link between furthest forward midfielder and attacker. Good for counter attacking but also good for ball retention and building moves. Needs full backs with good stamina to provide decent width. You could change arrows on AMFs to just forward if you are happy with full backs out wide. The AMFs are instructed to drift diagonally so while you counter attack they are easier to pick out in space. If you have the ball and build slowly, your full backs have plenty of time to get up though. Note the high defensive line, can be risky against pace, but if you have D-Line star for your CBs it should be OK. If not, drop them back a bit, three or four notches and put offside trap to B. Leave the full backs though. As always, fill the positions with the best players possible for best results.

I could add bits of info all day on little changes you could make, but unfortunately I don't have time right now. I'm sure you all get the idea and what to change to suit you.

Use back line B and offside trap A.

I miss you all, and hope to be back permanently soon. Just getting settled in my new gaff, and looking for a job.
Take it easy everyone, hope you are well.
