PES201 was terrible for lag. I played a game where there was a two second delay for every action. It was impossible to play the game like that.

Bumping one's own thread is shameful but I thought I may as well post my ML activity since I changed my approach to playing after last nights shambles.

First 6 games, I lost 4, won 1, drew 1.

Tonight, I've played 8 games, won 7 and drew 1.

The answer? A diamond 4-4-2 formation with all the players within spitting distance. PES2009 had this as well, diamond formations being optimum formations for getting the better of the CPU teams I mean.

I modified the Poland default formation, for whatever reason - and I've checked the setup - my full backs plough forward with wild abandon! In fact my full backs have been consistently my best players.

Anyway, it appears the playing quick quick slow build ups and reverse through passes slices the CPU defences in two. It feels slightly shameful winning games with the majority of goals coming from cut backs but for whatever reason the CPU teams are susceptible to such a basic method of scoring (and yes I am playing Top Player, any other level would be a crime :))

The Blitzkrieg Slop

Off topic and whiny, but, I want to express how annoying it is to play against someone in MLO who constantly sends their Flash Gordon Forwards up my defenders' asses before my keeper's sent out the damn ball. When this happens continually, I'm offended. It's just obnoxious. Back off–get to know my defenders first, for christ's sake.

Well don't pass it short to your defenders then. Sending your strikers up (Flash Gordon-like or otherwise) is a good way to punish players who do the same thing at every goal kick. It's not obnoxious in the slightest. You know, if you push your striker forward, the keeper kicks it to one CB, then he passes across to the other... if you manage to read it right the next time and score from it, it's THEIR fault for repeating the same move.

Long ball is a viable playing style on PES2011 and with most people playing high defensive lines you'll be surprised how often you'll be through on goal.

The beautiful game is sometimes better off being the beautifully direct game against the one trick pony cloggers.

Flash Gordon

I don't pass it short to my defenders, and I play the long ball, too. It's just annoying for someone to do the same thing over and over. I back off keepers, for the sake of promoting build-up play–whomever I play. I guess I try to set a precedent. And yes, it's stupid, but I won't kowtow.

Playing this lame style of football will only get you so far.Slow technical build up play will always give you the best results in the long run, when you master thia style of play.Rather than when you master the lame predictable tactics that most people use

Against human players using high defensive lines, accurate flighted through balls are a very effective style of play. I like playing technical quick quick slow football but against some human players its just not possible when midfield is absolutely packed.

Go to disagree ,for me anyway when i face players with super high defensive line its best to slow the game down in the middle of the park and easy through ball oportunitys arise when your patient.Oh and do you mean slow slow quick football.

I hate when players constantly do ping pong one-two passes. I always have a bitch and moan about it, it seems to be something that has crossed over from Fifa. A lot of players respond with "It's how Barca play"...... no it fucking isn't! Take last night for example, their build up is slow, they wait for the right moment, and then they pounce.

Having played many opponents online using a diamond or five in midfield its not that straight forward, I've been more successful building up and attacking down the left side of the pitch or playing long ball from the right. You shouldn't underestimate the effectiveness of long ball or mixing up your play, many teams will expect 1-2 football and I've often won games that I've been second best because of one very accurate long ball over the top for a striker to run onto.

No, I mean quick quick slow, a fast build up and then until the penalty area where I slow play down to pull defenders out of position.

Because I'm relatively new to playing online, could you tell me what are the lame, predictable tactics used? I have a good idea of what they are(the cheats, too), but I'd hate to adopt what would be considered unethical gaming techniques. I don't mean to pose this question sarcastically.

Anything that exploits the game's faults is cheap. For example, ping pong passing, overusing one-twos, constant through balls. In general, it's playing in such a way that you just wouldn't see in real life.

You'll come up against players who attempt to use the feint system with a specific player to overwhelm a team. I had that recently, someone had Juan Pablo Pino, all they did was use one specific feint down the wing every time. Although I knew he was going to do it, I couldn't defend against it. In the end I just hacked him a couple of times.

I hate to say it, but I'm not sure I've played a team online that hasn't played that way. While I'm sure many are aware they are playing this way, 'cheap,' that is, I'm sure there are loads who are playing this way and are unaware they're offending someone, and are just wanting to have fun or pass time. I fall into neither of these groups, for my attempts in emulating real life fail miserably, as my record can attest. In any event, the game's still fun, and I'll have the summer to spend too much time playing it. But screw it–hopefully I'll win a few and get out of D5. Thanks for responding to my question. Thanks too, Sminky.

I try my best to play "proper" football online. More often than not, it works.... I've got a pretty decent win record. I only play exhibition games though. I only play with smaller teams and refuse to play anyone who picks the big teams. Stuborn? Yes. But I get less idiots that way..... still a lot though :D

Thanks for the tip–screening your opponents makes sense. I'm tired of playing big teams, too. I guess I've never done this (screening) because of laziness and a lack of time; usually I select quick match, accept the fee to play, set my fullbacks to mark my opponents' inevitable winger/forwards, and go. My gaming experience will be improved now. Thanks.
