Going back a month or two ago, I was REALLY looking forward to PES 2009. Everything that was written/said about the game made it sound like it was going to be the game that "2008 should've been".

Then the demo's of PES and FIFA came along.

After playing both, I was still convinced that PES was better than FIFA. I was impressed by FIFA's new collision system, but the demo still felt like I was playing 2008 with this new feature implemented, and the increase of speed needed wasn't that evident.

I played a handful of games on the PES demo, and gave it, on the whole, good feedback. I'd link the post if I could find it, but never mind.

My mate, a fan of PES since the first release, also played the FIFA demo, and unlike me was really impressed by it. As said, I did find it decent, but it still felt like FIFA 08.5, rather than a full upgrade.

As the release of FIFA approached, he convinced me to buy the game. For me, PES being released weeks after FIFA is a pain in the arse, because however much I disliked the previous version, I'm always somehow persuaded into buying it after all the hype surrounding it.

After playing FIFA 09 for the first time, I quickly noticed that this wasn't the demo I was playing, as far as gameplay and the general feel of the game went. This was streets ahead of the demo. I will stress that to those of you who played the FIFA demo and didn't like it all that much. The full game plays much better, I promise.

Seeing as FIFA was released on the 3rd October, and PES on the 17th, it gave me two weeks to see what FIFA was like. Normally each year I'd buy FIFA, play it until PES was released, and then never touch it again. A wasted purchase, in many ways.

Last year, I bought FIFA 08 for the PS2, but shortly after bought a PS3 and picked up PES 2008. After initially being quite impressed by PES, I quickly realised that it wasn't all that different from the game I'd played previously on the PS2, and in many ways worse, much to do with the massive increase in speed, almost making me feel like I was stood in an arcade pressing yellow, red and blue buttons.

So, with the online play of 2008 being completely unplayable, and that's me being kind, I hear FIFA 08's online play is great. Well, if not great, a whole lot better than PES's. I then caught the bug and found myself spending another £30, this time on the PS3 version of FIFA, for online play. That impressed me, but as I mentioned earlier, it was all too slow for my liking.

After playing FIFA 09, and loving it on and offline, despite little annoyances like the "advantage" bug, my PS3 packed in, as many of you know.

While it was being fixed, PES 2009 was released. Naturally, I picked it up, seeing as the PS3 version cost me just over £24 in ASDA. But when I got my PS3 back on the 24th October, especially after reading reviews here and elsewhere on PES 2009, I had no motivation to turn my PS3 on and slide in PES 2009. Instead, I couldn't wait to play FIFA 09 online again.

Up to now, I've got PES and Von's awesome looking Option File installed on my PS3. But I've yet to play PES 2009. I've had it for over two weeks, and the opportunity to play it for about 10 days, but I STILL haven't played it. Instead, I find myself playing FIFA 09, and really enjoying it.

What I need is some convincing. PES 2009 online, apparently, still plays like its predecessor. Shit.

So it it all comes down to the offline play. What makes the PES 2009 offline play so good that I should want to go and play it, when I'm already having amazing fun with FIFA 09 and their brilliant (I realise it's over-implemented in places, but it's still brilliant) collision system.

A big problem with PES's gameplay this year is the referee. I've heard that once again, we're treated to Steve Bennett refereeing in each and every game, giving cards out for the fun of it when slide tackles are slightly mis-timed, and sometimes even well-timed. FIFA's refereeing though, as far as fouls go, is for once, almost spot on. You even get away with slide challenges sometimes that should result in a card, but are only blown up for a foul. Hence why I said "almost".

Now that I'm done writing all of this, I just need someone to convince me why I should go back to playing PES. Because at the moment, in the state it's seemingly in now, I have no real desire to do so.

A note I will make before I post;

Any "FIFA is shit, just play PES" type replies will result in a warning. :)

Punctuation.... Spelling.... ever heard of them?

Back on topic, I think it really comes down to what you prefer, PES or FIFA. The online has improved SLIGHTLY for me, & the BAL mode is really good. It lasts 24 seasons as opposed to FIFA's Be A Pro lasting 4 seasons. But other than that there is no major improvements. The CL mode is pretty much just for show, with all the liscences. You could easily just throw it together in the cup mode, they haven't even put CL into BAL or ML.

Referees = mistakes. They're humans after all. They make mistakes in almost ever real foorball match in terms of fouls.

Who gives a fuck whether you're in school or not, would you write like that at work?

dont care about spelling ect its readable and not in german

It's very hard for people to read what you say/take you seriously/care about your opinion when they have to translate everything into proper english.

your pretty much bang on, sadly mate, and i've been a massive pro fan for years, though always got both, i'd prefered the gameplay edge over all kits without hours and wkends lost editing, far far superior cmmentary, mass of stadiums etc. i too played both demo's, & tho fifa was ok, stuck with pro. 2 online games later, 2 thrashings, last 2 years i probably win slightly more than i lose, and when i do, not normally by much. ok, i'll practice on champs league b4 returning online, ignoring fact 2nd game was probably even worse lag than last year, that had supposedly been fixed?! i still find defending much much harder this year than last, even bloccking, and the ball just seems to whizz past defenders thru the box, goalkeepers often awful at near post as well. i just find i'm sadly enjoying pro less each year a little bit more, & its sadly not bcos i want to. so i thought i'd give fifa a little run last night, and as you say, its far far better than the demo, i was genuinely impressed. whether i stay this hungry for it over the coming months will have to be seen i guess, and i'll wait for the konami update & c wot this does, but this could end up being the first year i'm still playing fifa in december, and more than pro

thank god sum1 feels the same way as me. I ought pes from the ISS series and never even looked near fifa. this year i played the 2 demos and although i didnt think it changed as much as it should have from fifa 08, it had took a step in the right direction, unlike pes. when the full game came out i bought it and was amazed at how much diferent it was than the ful game. rente pro out for a week and barely even played. im hooked on fifas lagless online play.:D

i hated 2008 but i love this game and the funny things is i love it much more than i did when i fist got it especially since being enlightened by manual passing. The fundamentals that made the ps2 game so great are evident and the game feels like pes again, the game is far from perfect but no pes games were. I know some people want a massive overhaul but i said from the start if this years game was as good as the ps2 games i would be more than happy, this is the case for me. I thought fifa 08 was an excellent game but it gets very stale and dull although i do like the pace of the game. Couldn't care less about online play although it must be annoying for you guys who spent time and money going online

I was on the same boat as you cant keep playing FIFA given that:

1) Ball Physics:
a) You've got a beach ball (seriously they bounce more than any hooters' waitress)
b) The power=height formula

2) Look how "slow" player reactions are, seriously by the time you hit shoot I've already taken 3 dumps.

3) Glossy graphics
4) Every goal is the bloody same: keep playing and you'll get bored with it

PES 09 hasn't progressed much but hell its still the damn best soccer/football game on the planet

For me it all comes down to shooting, the way you shoot in PES outside the box and you score, that feels amazing, until Fifa keeps the same lame shooting, i will never buy it, plus, Fifa has no year value, you can play PES mid july/august and still love it.

I don't know, but for me the game is still PES, i have to say Fifa has come a long way and with massive improvements but that because they had a trashy game, and for PES is so hard to improve just because they almost had the perfect game 4/5 years ago.

All i can say is, rent the game, try it for yourself, and if you don't see much difference or you are not having fun playing PES, well, don't buy it and save yourself 50 dlls.

Sorry baddar i cant really see the point of this. You really need to turn on pes and try for yourself, only you can decide which game you prefer.
i bought fifa and i did a whole league in one day, cos i wanted to make sure if i wanted fifa or pes. and after 38 continuous games, i can tell you fifa doesnt touch the way pes plays. okay fifas got the gloss coating and licenses!! but After a while i was seeing a pattern in AI behaviour and in the goals scored (as mentioned above) the cpu always subbed at the 69 minute no matter if they were winning or losing. Also the button responsiveness costed me so many goals and opportunities its unreal and annoying. The team you could always play the same starting 11, with no need for change (tbh vo i think the career is different) i was putting the same long thru balls to score. Always felt like the same game you were playing. However i wish pes implemente the interactive league online and they dont seem to have that much lag online. but After 38 games i was truly fed up with fifa.
Playing pes is unpredicatable you can be so creative in goals and type of play. You cant just hold x till you get the ball off the ai, like you can in fifa. They pass it about they outplay you, and sometimes outsmart you.
and unlike most pes before you cant just run towards goal the cpu close you down cleverly, making you pass about and like fifa work the ball into a goal scoring opportunity, something i feel was lacking in previous pes games.
Anyway as i said i had to play them both personally to come to my decision, i can only recommend you do the same mate.
