I'm a SS/CF, now mid way through my 7th season - always on top player and 10 minute matches. My average rating is now 7.25 (I'm top in the game, just overtook Totti!), though this has mainly been because since the 3rd season I've found it very easy to get really high ratings (well, lots of 7.5's and 8's!). For example this season I'm averaging 7.62 - it helps that I have 45 goals in 22 games!
My general style of play is lots of forward diagonal dribbling and dummies to beat the defenders, and get as many shots in as you can (with the majority on target). I score a lot of goals (on 375 or so after 340 games) and don't get many assists for that reason (have 34 total) - all my mates say I'm the most selfish player they have ever seen, but it works! Anyway, my advice to get the good ratings (esp if you're a CF or SS):
1) Get LOADS of shots in. I generally have about 10 shots a game, and will get about 75% on target. It seems to me that once you have more than 6 shots on target, it boosts your rating. If I reach the magic 6 on target, I often get 8 ratings (even without scoring).
2) I dribble. A lot. Most distance in a 10 minute match is 900+ dribbled. Again, this seemed to really boost the rating... Obviously it will help if the dribbles end in a shot or pass that hits the mark, I don't think it likes aimless dribbling.
3) Try to intercept as much as possible. It seems to me that anything over 4 intercepts for a CF is what it loves. My problem at the start was knowing how the game quanitified an intercept. I think (and it's only a theory) that it's when you block a pass and your team get the ball from that. Stealing it off a player doesn't count. I can't describe the amount of times I thought I had about 10 intercepts in a game, and then had none on the ratings. Just seems to be a bit of luck needed!
4) Be selfish. My best ratings come in games where I literally say "screw my team mates" and go on dribbles galore. This does take some skill though, especially with a slow rubbish player. I'm fortunate that the player I have now is very good, and it's easy to stay ahead of the defence once they have been beaten. Before, when he was shit, it took a lot of patience and fingers off the dash button!
