Cant sign in for a tournament?

Hi, im new on xbox live and have just played 15 quickgames online.
I saw you can go in to a tournament.
But i cant join any tournaments. Tried last night but got the message:
Signing in to a tournament is not availible right now. Thougt it could be a temporary error on servers. But I saw other users signed in and the tournament played as plan what I could see.

How long before a tournament do I have to sign in? Or what could be wrong?

Bit strange that one m8, you can only enter the competitions when they have started, so if the tournament starts at 16:45 just go back to the tournament at the start time and you should be able to play. If you try to enter the tournament when its half way through it usually doesn't let you in.

Okay, I will try that. I tought you have to sign in before the tournament starts. So maybe it will work. (I told you I was new on this).
