Curious about player weight

I've been wondering whether the weight of a player really affects anything for example running speed and stability (body balance)?

Then it's just a figure that Konami put in to make the game more realistic rather than having any effect at all?

It certainly seems to affect body balance, but I could be wrong. It's similar to how height affects how well a player can head the ball. Some players are really tall and have low jumping ability, but are still good at winning headers, so some players are likewise quite large, but don't have great body balance and are still strong. That being said, the problem is that most really large players are also strong (as opposed to just having eaten too many pies) so they have high body balance anyway. Where it's somewhat important though, I think, is when it comes to choosing between, say, two defenders who are equal in body balance, but one is a beast (height and weight) and the other is just average size. I tend to pick the bigger player because I believe it makes them harder to knock off the ball and stronger in the air and in challenges, but perhaps it also means they are slightly slower...?

Anyway, I don't think it's crazy to assume this, otherwise why even include the players weight? Look at it that way and I think it is crazier to assume that weight has zero significance...

Thanks for the reply! Can you possibly confirm this? I get your point about the height advantage for headers and stuff but let's say a relatively short player 170cm with a weight of 70-80 kg will be a beast as well? I'm asking this question is because I'm playing BAL mode all the time and I just started to really think into it.

That means weight only gives you an added advantage and no disadvantages? I really hope someone could come up with a definitive answer..

I checked the PES guide and there's no definitive info in there, except that they confirm what I was saying about height. As for small players, they are not going to be "beasts" unless they have really good body balance. Anyway, ultimately it is up to you to make your decisions when buying players, and personally I don't think this issue has a huge bearing on things because in MLO you only have to sign a player for ten games at a time, so really what it comes down to is signing him, try him for yourself, and see if he is effective or not. If it's a matter of choosing between two players, though, I think more weight and more height is generally an advantage, although perhaps a really small/light player might be faster (again, this isn't for certain). Still, if faced with that choice I would tend to go for more weight and body balance over the smaller players who tend to get knocked off the ball a bit too easily in this years game.

What's most important are the stats anyway, like body balance being at least 75. To me there is a huge difference between a player with body balance 75 and a player who is 74. Also, like I said before, if the player is tall and heavy, his body balance stat is usually going to reflect that anyway, so there generally aren't players who break this mold. Is there a specific player you are wondering about?

I think you're right. A mate of mine created a few different BAL characters a couple of years ago, all different shapes & sizes, just for experimentation. As far as I remember the results followed your logic.

As I've said I created a player in BAL with 198 height (beast in headers!), weight is around 70-80 I think with 87 body balance but he seems to get knocked of the ball by smaller players with lower BB for example Ever Banega of Valencia which is a beast when marking you. Some other players that can dispossess me easily are Romaric, Mascherano, Ramirez, Wilshere and some others I can't really recall.

Most of them have either the same or less BB than me but I seem to get knocked over quite easily. Mind you I'm a beast at set-pieces and I'm not lightweight as well, probably should have gave him a 90kg stat rather than 70+.

Sounds kind of like a Peter Crouch type then? One thing to clarify is what your dribble accuracy and ball control are. If your dribble accuracy is low, a player like Wilshere could dispossess you for sure. Also, if you are only talking about this one player (not comparing to you using others) it is difficult to really pinpoint the problem. It could be that if you had the same player with higher weight that you would still have the problem. It depends on how you play and what you expect to be able to get away with in terms of dribbling/possession.

From my experience, I can say with some certainty that the combination of Weight+Height does have some effect a player's strength.

Well one things for sure the more the player wights the bigger he looks, (even fat if too much weights) so maybe weight only has appereance function in PES?

Really doubt weight has an influence on someone's physique - I houghly doubt someone as lazy as their workers would input weight with balance. Things like having a tall height and being able to reach the end of crosses are different - the ball wouldn't go through their faces.

I'd bet my bottom dollar Konami didn't apply a players weight with their abilities on the pitch

In my opinion, if Konami want to make the game more realistic, they should bring that system in. Where a shorter player would be faster then a 6''4 player, and likewise the 6''4 player would be stronger.
Would bring a nice twist to the BAL mode.

A player with high weight + height is a good player to use when we want to win headers/tackles, as they are physically strong and can easily push opponents aside. I will play them either as center back, or the defensive midfielder role.
