Sometimes this game sounds like a "pointlessly running around a huge map avoiding people sim" (shit), then it sounds like a very difficult and immersive survival sim, (good), then it sounds like a typically annoying multiplayer game where dicks run around killing other players just because they can thus limiting any chance for newbies to get into the game, (shit again).

I spose this is the problem with all online multiplayer games, most servers are full of absolute dicks who have no interest in playing the game "properly". PC players can pick their favourite servers and know what they're gonna get but console players probably wont have that luxury.

I still wanna play this game but, like most multiplayer games, I think it would be best played with a group of like minded friends. Which isn't always possible.

Still, I'm enjoying reading the stories about the game in here.

Following on a little from Dundon's mention of a mod that lets you build a house - I was introduced last night to a fantastic mod that has just given this game a new lease of life for me.

It's called DayZ Epoch and it adds a layer of depth to the game that blows the original DayZ out of the water. It's completely resurrected my interest in this game.

You can now craft items together to make other items, trade at trading posts and build all manner of base-related items. I played briefly yesterday and didn't really get anywhere, but I think this lends itself really well to our PESGaming team once again giving this a go and trying to work in tandem to make some good progress.

They have introduced currency, as well - which is at the heart of the trading system. You can buy things, but you're looting for money as well as stuff. An interesting dynamic.

There are numerous other changes which I've briefly heard about but not encountered yet. One I like the sound of is that vehicles that you buy come with keys - you can lock your car and someone can only steal it if they break into it/hotwire it.

Lots more changes here: http://dayzepoch.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Who is keen to give this another try? Phatmann Appswah Dundon's pj_puttz Haribo and anyone else?

For those interested, this is now available on Steam as a standalone game although it is described as an early access alpha. It will be interesting to see how it develops in the near future and I wonder how much is different from the Arma II mod version of the game.

I am not sure what is out now will be up to much, but I am sure the final version will be great.

It's a shame no-one from here is playing the mod anymore. DayZ Epoch is superb!

God damn zombies floating through walls, doors and generally being unhitable.

Sprinted for 20 minutes desperate for food, find some food and as I'm eating and a zombie glitches through into the house. I pull out my crow bar and I'm hitting him but doing no damage. I then get knocked unconscious and have to respawn :(.

Yesterday managed to get a nice rifle and lots of supplies only to be held up by a group of 3 russians. He spoke over the mic saying he wouldn't shoot me - I put my hands up and he handcuffed me and checked my stuff and said I could go on my way. I knew they were going to shoot me but I couldn't get round the corner quick enough, bastard shot me in the back :|

The full version of this game is going to be good. Would be really good fun in a small squad of people.

Edit:

Oh yeah, I did meet some guy yesterday and we teamed up only to be attacked by a guy with a baseball bat. I got confused whilst trying to save my new friend and in the end had to kill both as I couldn't tell who was who

Are you playing the standalone I take it?

The mod is still superior to the standalone, I think. Although 'good' servers are becoming a little harder to come by on the mod, there are still plenty.

Me and four of my mates all play regularly and I have to say that having a group makes things completely different. Having more than one person gives you such a huge advantage over solo players - of whom there are less and less in the mod, to be fair.

We have also had some epic fun with other 'clans' or groups - DayZ Epoch, with its base-building, means most groups have strongholds and fortified buildings where they store their stuff. Laying siege to an airstrip converted into a base in two armoured Humvees with sniper support from a hill half-a-mile away is great fun.

The one thing I would say is that this type of play means you lose the 'new player' experience as it is very easy to get started when you spawn (i.e. one of your mates will invariably come and pick you up, take you back to base and you can get supplies easily enough). For that reason, we decided to ditch our existing server for a bit and try a new map that none of us know, as a new challenge. It's good fun so far.

The standalone is only an alpha so is pretty bare in terms of content but it's still fun to play. Lots of things which can make it difficult to start is there's no loot near any of the spawns as it's all already been taken and you have to go further north to get supplies and equipment however you don't always find food and water and can end up dead easily. When you do find supplies though you end up getting held up and shot and you have to start again anyway

I'll have to see if I can get on when your on and give it a go. I'm fucking dreadful though; although not as bad as I first was when I running around in the open haha.

Arma II is part of the humble bundle sale this week so very tempted to get it for dirt cheap to give this a go.

Any of you guys still play the mod version or you migrated to the standalone?

I'm still on the mod version along with my real-life mates.

Standalone just not ready enough to make it better than mod version.
