[Discussion] Players - Team Roles

PES 2016 has Team Roles that players on your team can earn and they in turn improve the player and/or other team mates or in some cases your match-day and sponsor/fan income.

There are 10 roles that are attainable:

1. Youth Prospect
2. Protege
3. Leader
4. General
5. Star Player
6. Superstar
7. Maestro
8. Grand Master
9. Bandiera
10. Legend

Any player can achieve any role given he meets certain criteria. The criteria varies for every role. Each role (except for Bandiera and Legend) has 3 levels with increasing bonuses for each level.

All players that are promoted from the youth team get Youth Prospect level 1. This is also the most common team role at the moment. I had 19 Youth Prospects in my team on one save hmy:

At least one of my players has acquired all of the roles with the exception of Legend, Bandiera, Superstar and General. Although, Protege and Youth Prospect seem to be the most common and Protege's only appear for your team and in no other team/manager (at least it didn't for me).

What has been your experience with Team Roles? Which are the ones you have earned or are yet to experience? Do you think they have been implemented nicely? Also, I hope some of you might also have tips on how to get some of the better team roles.

I like the player roles concept.

But so far I've only unlocked Maestro, Leader and star player. I'm in my third season.

I really like this gameplay feature so much so I actually go around loaning cheap players with Maestro stats just to boost my players training.

I think in my next play throu I'll see if I can get Ronaldo and Messi in the same team so they can legend boost each other and keep decline at bay.

The legend boost is pretty nice. On my save a player called Djene became a third legend at age 25, so obviously I signed him. He gave CB's a 30% training bonus and other defenders 25%. It was pretty nice. Sadly, he retired at age 27 probably because I wasn't giving him much game time. (he was rated 64-65.). So I went ahead and signed 31 y.o. Messi.

My keeper Fabiano acquired the Grand Mater role (now he is lvl 2), so my keepers are always boosted 25% in training.

Any idea on how are these roles acquired or any other creative uses for them?

I've got Djené in my team as well. Retired at 27?? Wow I better give him some game time. Really useful player to have around to boost players. Varane jumped from 87 to 89 just from having the Djené effect (& the Sakho maestro effect). Clyne has reached his peak but he just jumped from 85 to 86.

Not sure how these roles are acquired. I Think it is a combination of a player playing well and the position he plays.

Jordan Henderson has been out of my team for a few weeks now but recently I rotated him in for a few games and he has now been flagged by the game to be taking the team forward. Maybe he is going to get the general title soon.

I do like the little hints at what players are working on and the affect they are having on their teammates. A very nice touch.

Yeah. But apparently it is possible to miss out on player roles.

N.Clyne was supposedly "taking the team forward" and the game gave me this alert 2-3 times. But in the end nothing happened. No new skill learnt (I thought it meant he was becoming a captain so I even made him captain for a few matches) and he still doesn't have any special team role.

Looks like I missed the boat. Oh well, at least he is still increasing his overall rating despite being at peak level.

I have about 5 superstars in my team and I always feel I have to play them at home for the extra sponsorship money they bring in.

The in-game update "taking the team forward" probably means your player is on the cusp of becoming a leader.

I just got an in-game update for captaincy. It specifically refers to captaincy and how team mates are becoming encouraged/influenced when that player takes the armband during matches. Can't remember the exact phrasing so paraphrasing.

So it seems like you can train players to become captains by giving them the arm band regularly.

That is the flourishing message. Your player will have a red flashing form arrow. He will level up very quickly each match.

Nope. That one is along the lines of '''close to a breakthrough, some more playing time is all he needs.'' The one I am referring to is different one. Plus there is no flashing red arrow to accompany it.

That's weird. My J.L.Gaya was given that message. And in the next match he flourished. And this just happened after you posted this! Should have taken a photo damn.

Ok, this is massively late in the day, however i can now in season 25/26 shed some light. Messi and Cristiano have retired, the 3rd legend djene has retired. I signed both messi and djene. I also signed the real Ronaldo in the second season. He started out as a "star player" progressed to "superstar" in summer window 2024 i got a message "the fans are starting to call him legend" in the january window 2025 he achieved legend status. I have also had 2 other superstar lv3 recently get the message "the fans are starting to call him "bandiera", they have not turnes bandiera yet. I can also confirm that leaders become generals. Also if you have a grand master and legend in the same position, other players of that base position get a 48% development boost.
