Final Fantasy XIII

This seems like the place to ask..

What is the Star Ocean series like? The fourth just got released in Japan and America I believe, would that be a good starting point for JRPGs?

I'm unsure. I have got Star Ocean: Till the End of Time but I haven't played it yet. From what I have seen the battle system follows more into the Tales series or Final Fantasy XII. It looks good so I'll probably be getting it but some people maybe should consider renting it before buying it. It isn't as big as Lost Odyssey as far as I know it is only on 2 discs but it looks like a decent game and the battle system being more active might appeal more to gamers today that don't particularly like the dated turn-based system.

NO SPOILERS IN THIS POST

I got Final Fantasy XIII yesterday and I am enjoying it so far. 2 things I didn't like though.

1st - From the beginning, it feels like someone has been playing the game and you have just walked in and taken over as you are pretty much thrown into the plot surrounding things "Fal'Ce", "Pulse", "lCe", "Sanctum" "The Purge" without having a good idea what they are talking about.

2nd - In battle, it seems like you can only control Lightning while the others are controlled by AI (an aspect of Final Fantasy XII I didn't like). If Lightning dies in battle - game over. It doesn't matter if the other 2 die, as long as Lightning doesn't die.

The voice acting seems okay although cheesy at some points, which is to be expected from Final Fantasy.

Other than that I am enjoying the game as well as still trying to wrap my head around what the fuck is going on.

I read that it's not until 15 hours into the game that it really starts to prove it's worth.

That's a-mucho hours. Might give it a purchase as with the 30 odd hours of game-play you do get your money's worth.

Damn, I just realized how fast we've approached March and that Final Fantasy XIII is just around the corner. Let's see what can be offered this time, I'm excited.

Ha I knew the gloating would come sooner or later ;)

The voice acting for Vanille is pretty cringeworthy. She actually does a small bit of narrating a small points which must come into play later in the game.

Sazh is actually a pretty funny guy, although I get a bit suspicious of him looking at Vanille the wrong way since she is a kid. (What are those Japanese like :D) Still he is a good character.

Lightning as expected, is quite mysterious but I like her character.

Snow I thought was gonna be a cool guy but turns out he just shouts his fiancee's name all the time and talking about being the hero (like Balthier only not as cool).

Hope is just a little dweeb like Vaan and Tidus (as expected) only this time he is not the main character and blames Snow for his mother's death.

I haven't had control of the last character yet but she is confusing at the moment.

As for the combat, it surprisingly works quite well for only being able to control the 'leader'. You are given roles such as Commando, Medic, Ravager, Sentinel, Synergist and Saboteur. I do miss the good 'ol Final Fantasy black mage, white mage, etc.

Commando is an all out attack job that focus on damage dealing.

Ravager's also attack with magic or attack+magic (i.e. Flamestrike). The Ravager's role is to help increase the chain on an enemy to staggering. When an enemy gets to staggering, damage is increased but as soon as the enemy's stagger meter depletes then it is back to chaining.

Sentinel's are a defense role that get the enemy to focus on that character.

Medic's role obviously is to cure everyone.

Synergists usually cast performance enhancing abilities like Protect.

Saboteur cast enemy weakening spells.

At the beginning, only certain job roles are open to certain characters. The levelling system is similar to Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid. Instead, you get the Crystarium and level your jobs up.

You then get Paradigms, which is a selections of combat strategies. (i.e. Medic--Sentinel--Ravager or Commando--Ravager--Ravager). I think you can create up to 5 and then you set the one you want to start a battle with. Once in a battle you can perform a Paradigm Shift and select a new paradigm.

I really like the Paradigm Shift. I usually find myself starting off with a Synergist to cast Protect and Shell then sometimes (if possible) switch to a Saboteur to weaken the enemy then switch to either Commando--Ravager--Medic or Ravager--Ravager--Ravager. If I am taking a lot of damage then I probably keep the medic in.

In battle, you also have the ATB bar, right now I have 4 slots of it but I think you start off with 2. Some abilities take up a certain amount of ATB time. Attack takes up 1 so you can select attack twice and the character will perform those attacks once their ATB is full.

If you have like 3 options and you are only wanting to use something like Cure which takes up one, you can select cure and then you can press Triangle to use it even if the ATB bar isn't full but as long as the first slot in which Cure would be in has enough. The remaining ATB that you don't use carries over to the next move.

The battles are quite fast and really enjoyable. The bad thing about the battles is whoever the 'Leader' is (not always Lightning as I first thought it would be) dies then it is game over. The leader cannot die. Also the not being able to control the other guys in battle is another bummer but I think this system works better than Final Fantasy XII.

So far playing through the game, it is pretty much as linear you will get. I've done about 2 dungeons and it has been pretty much one way. The second dungeon every time I got to the next room it looked almost identical to the first and so on - and that one took me ages to complete as it was pretty long. Infact I have loaded up the game and I am only just out of that dungeon.

That is pretty much all I've got to say. I'm just over 14 hours of gameplay and now I'm going to get back to it. :)

Dunno, but I got the PS3 version because I knew that it was being developed for PS3 then ported to X360 and ports usually have 1 or 2 issues.

So far I would say so. You'll definitely get a lot of hours out of this game. I have now racked up between 15/16 hours and I have just got the last party member. The game isn't the best but isn't the worst either. Certainly better than Final Fantasy XII. The main thing that is annoying me is just how linear this game is. Magazines have said it but I wasn't expecting it to be so straight forward. It's not ruining my enjoyment of the game.

So its not like FF7 where you can go around the world map and do side quests & piss about etc?

Yeah pretty much, so far of what I have played anyway.

Yes it is http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=19857881&postcount=12055

I'm getting it for the Ps3 because well thats all I have. However if I had both systems I'd still buy it for the Ps3. Multiple dvd's for a game is so 90's

I actually don't mind multiple discs. It feels sort of an achievement getting to the next disk. I remember being over the moon when I beat Hojo in FFVII for the first time to get to disc 3. It certainly didn't influence my decision to get FFXIII for the PS3. That was just down to the fact it was developed on the PS3.

Probs just a rush port, didn't optimize it as well as they could have, like with Bayonetta looking better on 360 than PS3, it happens, still a long way from pong so who gives a shit lol I gave up playing FF after 10, tried 12 but never got into it, just bored me to death. I think it's time it died a death, I mean movies that have endless sequels get gradually worse, this surely has gone on long enough. Everything I have heard and seen about the gameplay to me, just seems like western dumbing down, Oh western people can't do as well as Japanese, lets make it linear, auto combat options, stupid character names(more so than usual), I prefer freedom. I will admit it looks nice though, but still not getting it, at leadt those who have it, tell me, does it opens up a little as you get further into the game?

Agh I really don't know whether to buy this or not. I have read both good and bad reviews on it. For anyone who has bought it on here, is it worth the money? I don't have a job anymore so what money I do have now is all I have til the summer so I need something to occupy myself with once I run out of drinking money.

I know all the focus is around the linearity of the story but is it still good regardless of this fact?
