I've read that some users who were able to run the demo fine can't play the game because their graphics card isn't good enough. Unfortunately, you appear to be another such user.
Tons of complaints about glitches like this and the activation system and all fully deserved.
Have you applied the patch?
Read my post - the SI forums are awash with problems like this, both before and after the patch.
My Time, try this: DirectX SDK (November 2008) and let us know if it works or not.

And try to update your graphic card drivers to the latest one.

Just bought Football Manager 09 this morning iv come back to install it and it's the biggest ball ache ever! I tried to put my production code in and i got the friggin o's mixed up with 0's. Anyway i'm finally underway and i need that patch for the kits and player profile pictures.

Okay, what happens with my FM:
Install it (problem free, now I've done it before) it autoruns okay. I play it for a few hours, then quit. AS USUAL.
Then next time I try and play it, nothing works. It doesn't realise it needs to play, it just makes up excuses not to.
So basically every time I want to play the fucking thing, I am gonna have to uninstall then reinstall the piece of shit. They've fucked up big time this year with the whole Steam installation thingy.

I can't help it. Does anyone know of any good players for me to sign? Bear in mind i'm only wigan and i need striker a centre back and a central midfielder. Let me know if you know of any.
You were too lazy to get it ordered via an e-tailer like Play or to go to the shop? If you're going to say yes to that, I've diminished sympathy for you. Why anybody would purchase an electronic version of a game as opposed to a physical copy when they have perfect access to both is beyond me.

I bought it from gamestation this morning so what you on about? I'v got the physical copy so it looks like the first four words a retarded then.

You have two options with the physical copy - log on to Steam or active over the phone or internet. Choose the second one and take the Steam activation and installation completely out of the loop. That's what I was alluding to in my first post.
Haven't found any decent unknown players yet due to my desperation to sign Santacroce from Napoli within my £8m budget as Tassotti thinks my team are shit - which they are.
