Nifty suggested that I start a new career with the same club he's playing as (a Serie B side) and compare how we do, thought it would be interesting to see if anyone else would be up for doing the challenge as well.

I'll have a go, need a new challenge.

Set the rules and game settings, lets get to business!

I've still got a week until Uni starts but I doubt I'll play it that much, probably a couple hours a day.

Just start a regular game really, no special rules.

 takes me about a week to get through pre season.
 I sleep ridiculous hours at the moment. Sleep around 4-5am and wake around 12 midday. Usually playing a sport during the day and then from about 6pm to 5am I'm playing football manager. University needs to start as I really need something to do.

I'll try and give it a go but just uncertain if I've got the time right now.

Since FM 08, this is all that my mate and I have done in FM. We manage the same team (or pick a similar level of team i.e. Kettering Town & Kingstonian) and set a challenge to see who does better.

In FM 08 we were both Derby County, Belenenses and Flamengo , FM 09 we were both Hull and Cardiff in another game and so on. Then we would pretty much play at the same time and chat through MSN/Facebook sharing screenshots etc.

Good fun.

Great idea, but you guys put in a lot of hours dontchya? Dunno if I could keep up time wise

I certainly don't. I also play through extremely slowly - I probably dedicate a few hours a week to it, but where there is a community interest will certainly up my playing time to get further into the game.

I have some thoughts on the 'proper' way to play this game which marginalises what I consider 'cheating' - here are my thoughts on how it should be played (although these are not set-in-stone rules; I'd sooner people play however they are comfortable for the sake of more competitors):

Suggested rules

1. Get this update: http://www.fmscout.com/a-fm13-transfer-data-update-packs-by-pr0.html

As far as I know, it is the best one available and it will mean everyone starts with a level playing field in terms of the squad. How up-to-date it is at Serie B level, I can't vouch; but it doesn't really matter if it is a bit out as I am sure none of us would know any better.

2. Setting up your manager, you must use "Automatic" past experience, coupled with your real nationality and real name (capitalised properly so screenshots don't look shit!).

3. No use of "super tactics." In fact, no downloading of tactics at all. You're the manager, after all!

4. No use of the "Search" bar to find specific entities (players, staff, and so on).

5. No scouring through clubs' squads one-by-one in order to find a particular player who you know plays for a certain team. This is not realistic. Searching for players must be done using the "realistic" methods available (i.e. player search, scouting network knowledge, etc).

6. No pre-match saving and reloading to rectify results. This is a no-brainer really. You're only cheating yourself.

7. Participants are encouraged to keep a log of their progress and the more information the better. Tell us about your signings, your sales, your results and other stuff. Make people feel involved in your game.

8. If you lose your job, continue your game as appropriate and apply for jobs and continue on with your career. Do not recreate your manager in order to get your old job back. Feel free to move on to other clubs as you build your experience up - but of course some loyalty to Trapani Calcio wouldn't go amiss.

I personally play the game with a shed-load of leagues running, all the way to the bottom divisions in each. But of course use your PC spec as a guide.

I will give you all a get-the-ball-rolling update on my pre-season tomorrow. Interestingly, your first match will be a competitive cup fixture. Just as a warning.

So far so good for me, still in pre-season. Won 3 of my 4 friendly games so far, just drew with AS Roma reserves. Signed two players on a free transfer each, Jean-Christophe Coubronne and Massimilano Fusani. Coubronne has a 4 star potential.

EDIT:

A comfortable 4-0 win against Sambenettese puts me through to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Italian Cup!

2nd EDIT: Stopped playing for tonight, so far so good. Through to the 4th Qualifying Round of the Italian Cup but I've drawn all 4 league games, all of them due to losing leads!

Right, not a great deal to report so far in my game, but here is everything about it so far:

Leagues running - I am running, in full detail, down to the lowest division, each of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and USA. Approximate player count: 147,000. I know you can add/remove leagues as you go, but I'm old school and don't like doing that. Of course it slows my progress, but I can live with that for the added depth it brings.

Squad - as soon as I took over (i.e. started the game), it became apparent that Trapani were weak at full-back. I moved to rectify this and made getting both a right- and left-back a priority.

Ex-Romania under-21 international Sergiu Homei arrived for £18k, quickly followed by Simone Sini on a season-long loan from AS Roma.

Whilst reasonably strong out wide and with options up-front, the core of the side needed strengthening I thought and so I went hunting for a central midfielder. Amateur Sjaak Lettinga was brought to the club for no fee, although he has signed professional terms making him the club's top earner at £4.2k per week. Hopefully will be a steady Eddy in there.

The 'big-name' signing was a controversial one, but ex-Juventus man Alex Pederzoli also put pen-to-paper. He will almost certainly be the best technical footballer in the squad, but he is serving a global ban for another year. I actually thought it was only for a few months, but I misread October 2013 for October 2012  (actually, I think I read it as 2013 but my mind didn't put two-and-two together to make me realise the game is a year behind real-life)

Lastly, I added Gabriele Franchina, an 18-year-old right-back (who can also play centrally). Whilst I've only got him on loan, I'm eyeing him up for the future and depending on how he progresses here for a season will potentially move towards a permanent deal.

Fixtures - Don't think I could've asked for an easier cup draw. Got minnows Delta Porto Tolle (who?) at home and thrashed them 6-0 without breaking a sweat. Simone Basso got four.

I've just proceeded to lose my first pre-season friendly 1-0, but I am not overly worried as we dominated; just couldn't stick the ball in the back of the net. Next up is a potentially tricky tie away to fellow Serie B side A.S. Varese, who the media think are likely to be alongside us in the lower half of the table. Up for grabs is a place in the Third Qualifying Round of the TIM Cup.

I haven't got a flipping clue.

EDIT: Oh wait, they're the side who suffered this brilliance I posted a while back!

That is brilliant. I love little tidbits of information about small teams.

After I started as Trapani, the first thing I did was go on the club's website.

The TIM Cup dream is over for me. Went out to Varese after a woeful penalty shootout display.

Again, dominated the game, created more chances, but it took two goals in the last two minutes from substitute Giuseppe Madonia to force extra time after Varese went 2-0 up in the second half. I had to play most of extra time with 10 men, having made three subs, Giacomo Filippi came off injured straight away.

So it went to penalties and Varese buried all three, top corner. My keeper didn't even shift for any of them. Mine? Two weak efforts and one blazed high, wide and handsome. 3-0 on penalties, so out of the cup before the season has even started!

In my quest to further strengthen the squad, I turned to youth. Two Italian teenagers - striker Marco Peta and midfielder Marco Pacini - were brought in for free and I will look to send them out on loan somewhere lower down to get some playing time.

The pick of the bunch, however, is ex-Arsenal youngster Philip Roberts who I'm hoping could turn into a real star. He's only 18 and carries good potential according to my scouts. Will probably keep him at the club this season as I reckon he could even see some action this season.

Picked this up again, currently lying 12th in the league. Last game was against Palermo, which I obviously lost although we did put up a fight. Went into the first half with the score at 3-0, come full time it was 3-2. So I was relatively close to an upset.
