The Pro Evo series was preceded by the Internatiaonal Superstar Soccer series and then the ISS Pro series. More here.

I've played every single one of those games from the first ISS Pro up the PES series (the last two PES only on PS2, not PS3, mind) bar ISS 98. I remember I really liked ISS Pro 2, the last one to come out on PSX (if I remember correctly. I bought a PS2 around the time Pro Evo came out for that).
