How to get player with expiring contract in ML

I didn't find answer for this in other posts.
I'm in the middle of my first season in Master league.
I searched and found some player from other teams in their last year of the contract and with contract negotiation on hold with their team.
When can I first try to sign them for free?
How do I do that?

The only option I see currently (at January) is the usual negotiation but then his team asks for money like players with few years on contract.
How can I avoid the payment to his team?

you are gonna have to pay money if it is on hold because they are still owned by the club but you have to pay less. However, if they are a free agent, you can get them for free

Try putting an offer between May and July (just before and during the end of the season). You should be able to get them on a free around then.

Not working

Must be earlier as I can see there are some players already transferring on s free to other clubs...

Anyone else know for certain?

Someone told me in another forum that I can do it from February.
After the winter transfer window is closed.
I haven't tried it yet but I would try this.

You sure? I don't think it's possible until they're actually released by the club...

yeah it def works
last night i tried it with a man player(joe dudgeon) and come end of season he signed for my hull team on a free :w00t

yeah it does work - just realised it still says 'start negotiations' so it looks like you're going in for a normal transfer, but only when you see the offer you'll notice that the transfer fee is 0...

But alas - only the really shit players are available in that manner...
