Is it legal to publicly distribute compilations in which the music is not originally made? Isn't this violation of the copyright?

No-one will know whereabouts you got it from, so just go for it. Most of the compilations on the site have music on there, haven't a clue whereabouts that music comes from.

One more reason is that (in the most compilations) audio is compressed is such way you wouldn't want to ripp the song from compilation because of the bad sound quality, so you're not distributing something that others would like to have.

This is actually advertising for the author of that song. I know that, because members often ask me who is the author of the song in my compi (and name of the song) and then they go to buy it because they want a prefect sound quality song. Of course, some of them "bought it" without paying, but that's their problem
