just wondering about licensing

about licensing. yes it comes on topic again.. I was just wondering why is it so difficult for konami to get licenses? it's being said it's because fifa has all the rights and konami has to make business with the clubs in private.. my question is why does other games such as 'this is football' have full licenses? I think this is football has a larger database than fifa ? or am I wrong?
have you ever heard of this is football? i have played once and it's the game you can 'dive on purpose ' and everytime you either get a penalty or yellow card :)

cheers

i wonder that aswell. i'm beggining to think ea pay clubs more to refuse konami their licenses. im sure there is someone on here that can tell us how the licensing stuff works.

EA own the FIFA licence, just like they own PGA, NFL, NHL etc so they have the right to use any teams or players that they want because the FIFA licence covers it all. Konami then cant just use all of the players names and real kits, because EA have bought this privelage. So all of Konamis real players/teams/stadiums/kits are bought thru seperate licences that EA dont own. i think these are league licences and such. i have no idea why they have yet to include the EPL mind.

that doesn't explain why the game 'this is football' can use them i saw it and it has way more than fifa players and clubs maybe it's the fifpro ??

Its entirely possible that those licences are still being held by the respective companies that made those games, so they have them should they wish to make another game. but if they choose not to make anymore then the licence they own will expire and Konami could purchase them in theory. its all legalities and such.

Yeah, you could be right. Have not played TIF since the early days on the PS1. But all they had back then were just the team names. Kits and such were just rough approximations of the real thing. As you said, EA probably couldn't do anything about TIF and since it was a SONY in house product. (also they might not have wanted to antagonise SONY)They might have since signed up exclusivity deals to prevent this form happening. KONAMI should be trying hard to get the TIF licences (If it was ever possible).

Licensing

And here we are back on the subject of licensing again.
Okay. Electronic Arts own the FIFA license so they can use the teams they want including most of the leagues covered by that license.. premiership, bundesliga, serie A etc.

FIFpro which was the license used by This Is Football developers also gave them priveleges to use player names and team names for the game.

There was also a game called UEFA Champions League which covered obviously the prestigious european cup.. so there you have it.. all three major licensing and footballing federations/companies paid for licensing priveleges.. which leaves Konami effectively on the shelf having to individually negotiate with each cub for permission to use they're player names and team names.

It's not impossible for konami to still have this privelege but in all honesty i don't think SEABASS is sweating too much as the game sells itself .. not on looks and licensing but the playability knowing fullywell that adoring legions of fans every year will edit some teams anyway he probably doesn't regard it as a major achilles heel.,
If rumours are true.. and the PS3 version of PES will have full licensing then it would certainly seem that Konami are as always concerned with the footballing element of the game rather than the looks.

Konami have already got legalities with teams sorted for the PS3 PES game and no doubt want to wait for its release before utilising this as one of they're main weapons in the release for pes on the ps3.. that would be a smart business and marketing move by konami.. lets face it.. they got the basis of football cpu games spot on for most part most of the other changes are material ones.

And maybe they know that thousands of people can download an updated option file to correct all of the names as well as patch their game to include all the correct kits with sponsors so it saves them money.

But making more of an effort with trying to get the licences for more teams would benefit them more as there are far more people who do not know how to patch. Surely they know they are losing loads of sales and money by not having licences? The average kid in the street will usually pick fifa over pes because of the licences and names.

why did they encrypted the kits on we9? If they know (konami) and don't care why encrypt kits and make them difficult to patch? was it mandatory by some law that forced them to do that? or is there another reason behind? now is a real challenge to have patched kits don't you think?

patch isn't difficult is making the patch that is...

I say: Yes.. I agree with this Konami are well aware people (Like Me) buy the Max Drive wait for someone to create a kick ass option file with logos/badges/kits/names etc and just use that instead.

I say: Yes very true Konami do face losing sales & Money but it really bothers Electronic Arts that FIFA outsells PES through the licensing and not the footballing aspect. On one hand you have the EA company spending a fortune to make the game look good and Konami spending time and effort to make sure the playability is awesome.
Electronic Arts wants FIFA to be the best footballing and highest selling game.. They've got one they just havent nailed the footballing/playability aspect...at least not in my opinion and i've played all the FIFA games.
The other note as i previously mentioned that Konami are using the licensing angle as one of they're "weapons" on the launch of the first PES game for the PS3. Which is understandable surely as most PS3 buyers will think "WOW !! Look a fully endorsed licensed version of PES the first in its series" its an ace card for Konami that they've managed without the licensing for so long.

YEah, you may be onto something RedDevil. I plan to only get the PS3 somewhere in 2007.(I always do wait a year or so after release) Usually around that time the price should stabilise. But if WE/PES is fully licenced might change my mind.

I only ever bought the pS2 for 2 games. Pro Evo & MGS2 (Metal Gear). And I'll probably be buying PS3 for palying Pro Evo and MGS4 again.

Cheers

I say: Ahh somebody once said "Great Minds think alike" could be applied here.. the PS3's version of PES will without doubt shatter and blow the minds away of all those that currently play pes now.. and like great minds think alike i originally planned to buy a PS3 a year later when the price won't be so astronomical.. however methinks i'll be saving soon to purchase a ps3.
Konami might be losing Sales by not having the FIFA Grabbers of the market but in all fairness they've saved that anyway in not negotiating individually year after year with the football teams for their licensing priveleges.
