edit - oh and here is a very good thread with any answers to questions you may have. It explains why things like public transport (mobsters wouldnt have used PT, always drove there own cars/with others and looked down on people who used the subway, plus would've ate up loads of memory...) swimming, blind shooting and bailing from cars were left out (

While the demo is a lot of fun, and I'm sure the final game will be, it's nothing mind-blowing, and I can't help but feel it should have been a lot better considering it's been in development for so long.

And I don't buy the answers where the excuse is realism. I'm sorry to say, but I think it's just laziness. No melee weapons? Are you telling me that's realistic? What's a mobster without a baseball bat?

I won't be too negative though, because there's a lot of nice touches in the game, like the police interactivity and the soundtrack. Plus when you point a gun at a black guy and he says 'It's because I'm black, isn't it?'

it always infuriates me when you declare the developers lazy. Yeah, sorry, builiding a game and engine from the ground up isn't enough for you. they leave out a few things and they're automatically lazy even though game developers on average work longer days and more hours than anyone else.

How lazy of them!!

I had a feeling you would react thus. But there are certain things I expect of this type of game. The ability to dive out of cars, and certainly melee weapons, the lack of which is inexcusable. Graphics aside, this game offers relatively little that Godfather: Don's Edition didn't, except for a more bustling city. It has a sense of the 'unfinished' about it. Being able to just walk through hedges - the fuck is that all about? Considering it has been in development for at least three years, I just feel it should offer more.

You're telling me you honestly buy the 'mobsters wouldn't do this' excuse? If not lazy then, perhaps just not-that-great Czech developers?

If you dive out of a car driving at like 80mph you're likely to get serious injury or possibly die. I understand why they didnt put that in it if they are aiming for realism.

The same goes for jumping. You don't walk round the streets in your every day life jumping up and down on the spot do you? When you need to jump or climb, you can (ie over gates and fences and onto cars etc), and for me that is enough.

This game is far from perfect, but it is still a cracking achievement and one I cant wait to play and experience. Yes there are glitches and certain things missing, but look at RDR, that had plenty of glitches and walking through bushes and such and that was in development for just as long, yet you didnt complain then and it still is probably yours and my GOTY.

Oh and Barn, I enjoyed this 10 minute demo more than I did my experiences with GTA 4.

I don't remember being able to just run through large bushes in Red Dead, and to be fair most the glitches were usually the funny, strange sort.

Perhaps I'm just bored of these urban-based games.

I could see that tbh. I havent played one of them properly beginning to end since Vice City. I dabbled with San Andreas and GTA IV after that but never put many hours into them, so maybe thats why i am more open to playing through this than you.

You've had Saints Row 2, GTA IV, Scarface, Godfather 1 and 2 and probably many others since.

Played the Mafia 2 demo last night. I've been looking forward to this game for ages but I really wasn't that impressed :(

The controls just didn't feel very 'tight' if you know what I mean. The shooting also didn't feel very satisfying and I really wasn't that impressed with the graphics.

The voice acting was great though, like the first game.

I know it's only a demo but it just didn't seem to have the same feel as the original. You really felt you were in the 1920's in the original Mafia and the city was amazing. Hopefully the full game will suprise me and be great though!

Seems to be getting pretty average reviews. IGN gave it a 7 and Kotaku's review didn't sound too favourable.

Hopefully it'll be £15-20 by Christmas.

I had a feeling it would, there's certainly nothing exceptional about the game from the looks of the demo.

Well this sounds somewhat disappointing. Although to be honest, the demo didn't blow me away. Sure I didn't really think there was much wrong with it in the way of flaws, even the driving mechanics I was happy with. There wasn't anything that stood out as astounding though unfortunately, the same could be said for GTAIV from my perspective.

I think the whole Mafioso twist to New York and the more old environment could be enjoyable though, but still, as others have said I won't be rushing out to buy it. I've still got BioShock 2 to go through which shall be great.

I miss the days where average was more like a 5/10.

I'm surprised really. High production values, stylish trailers, I thought they were in for a sure-fire GOTY contender. I enjoyed the demo for what it was. The car handling is hit-and-miss, but adaption is all that's required. I remember sucking at steering on Vice City and GTA IV in the early stages.

At least there's still the excellent soundtrack: Little Richard, Bill Haley, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin. I had tears of joy when Chuck Berry came on the radio. :crymore:

is LOST
Had a quick go on it this afternoon and it isn't anything special from the first 20 mins that i played, has a very similar feel to the godfather games

I'm really confused by some of the review scores?

IGN gave it a fairly good write up but criticised the shooting and the lack of things to do. They only gave it a 7/10

Gamespot seemed a lot more positive though and actually praised the shooting. They gave it a 8.5/10

Another review gave it a 9.3/10 yet a couple of others gave it 7/10.

I'm really not sure whether to buy it or not now? One of the criticisms that the reviewers seem to give it is that there aren't any side missions and every mission just progresses the storyline. I actually think this is a good thing though! All the side missions in GTA became quite distracting for me and I often forgot what I'd last done in the main storyline on GTA IV.

Don't think I'm gonna buy this straight away. Reckon I'll pick it up around Xmas time when its dropped below £20.

Either way you look at it, Mafia II is still getting decent reviews. Sure 7/10 isn't astounding but I think we're now in a gaming era where we only expect to buy ground-breaking games, which just isn't realistic. Whatever happened to buying a game because you'll enjoy it, it may not be as playable as Call Of Duty or as stunning as BioShock 1, but a game can still be enjoyable to play. So, I understand where you're coming from on the review front, but I wouldn't really pay attention to it all as we've all learnt that reviews can be very misleading *cough* GTAIV *cough*. A 7/10 isn't a bad score, probably not one that merits a £35 purchase, but one that still merits a very playable game at some point.

I'm definitely with you on this one Blade. GTAIV for me was too "jigsaw" in the sense that the story was quite scattered, and trying to build it up and piece to together at times was just a pain. Hence why I got to around 45% I think before stopping completely and moving onto a more enjoyable game. As for nothing else to do, is this in the way of side missions or in general? I'm not expecting a whole array of mini-games anyway with it being quite a cinematic Mafioso game, but I've only played the demo three times, and only twice ventured out into town, and I saw a couple of things I think, I definitely noticed a body shop and clothes shop. There was more also but I can't remember. As I say though, I'm quite used to not having huge amounts of extra-curricular activity anymore, the last game which implemented it perfectly was San Andreas some 5+ years ago. I wouldn't expect the same level of comedy and rude minigames from Mafia II.

With the missions purely being story, I do reckon it might be more enjoyable and easy to follow. Sure it'll probably mean it's a shorter game but for me I'd consider that a positive considering I've never finished a big sandbox game before in my life.

I won't be buying it upon release, definitely not as I've still got Lego Harry Potter to complete. I've finished the main story but I'm not far of completing the game 100% which I rarely do with any game so I'll be happy to achieve that. Then I'll probably play through BioShock 2, or finish off Batman Arkum Asylum since I'm halfway through that. I might give it a month or two before purchasing Mafia II, by then I reckon the collector's edition of the game will be down to a pretty reasonable price. Plus, it's re-sale value will be similar also meaning once I've completed it I can sell it on if I desire and look at only losing a few quid.

Yeah I'm glad we agree about GTA IV Hunter. It was a good game and worthy of some praise but all the 10/10 scores made me think it was going to be immense! I actually much preferred GTA San Andreas.

The original Mafia game is probably my favourite game ever! I enjoyed it far more than I've enjoyed any of the GTA games.

I've just read the Eurogamer review.... the guy gave Mafia 2 a 4/10!!! :shocking:

Having played the demo I can safely say there's no way it deserves a score that low. I think your right about taking reviews with a large pinch of salt! The reviewer seems to just be slating the game because it's not the same as GTA. That's the whole point!! Mafia is a story driven game that immerses the player in the storyline, where as GTA is far more about the world and side missions. The whole review just made me really angry cos the guy also criticised the first game and I still think the original Mafia pees all over GTA IV! He seemed to be criticising Mafia for being different to GTA but that was the exact reason why the first game was so enjoyable!!!

Overall though I'm still disappointed by the demo and reviews. I've been waiting for this sequel for years and it doesn't look like it's going to quite live up to the first game. I'll wait and see though.

IGN gave kayne and lynch 2 a 9/10 lol they probably refused to pay for a review unlike kayne and lynch makers

what a great game this is
a must buy 9/10 from me
the ai seem abit dumb though
especially comparing it with gtaIV great AI
story line has been really good up to now im at about chapter 4
the only really annoying thing up to now was the lock picking part but that was mainly due to my stupidness taking forever to work it out,
the car customization is pretty good aswell

i cant say anything about the console version ,but the graphics are amazing for the pc version when maxed out ,really is amazing the detail of the city:eek:hmy: when driving around
especially in the snow ive not got to the part where its sunny like the demo yet

There's a snow-filled 1940s-1950s New York? Oh man. That would be worth a bit of money on it's own.

I've never played the original Mafia, but I've heard nothing but huge praise for it. As for Mafia II, I guess we'll just have to wait a few more days until it's released before we can get some more honest opinions on the game because I'm guessing from the reviews, we really don't know what to believe. When they range from 4/10 to 9/10, it's literally a mind-fuck.

As I say though, I'll be waiting for the price to drop anyway, so fingers crossed the collector's edition plummets in price - like most have done this year.
