Rockstar Games has confirmed Max Payne 3 is currently in development and scheduled for a winter 2009 release on 360, PS3 and PC.

"Developed by Rockstar Vancouver, Max Payne 3 tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence," is the first info we've received.

If you're new to the world of Payne, the game puts you in the role of Max, a hard-boiled New York City detective with a penchant for violence, out to avenge the death of his family. "The latest installment delivers more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love, while moving the story of Max in a new direction," Rockstar adds.

"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."

The release continues: "Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out."

Fuck. Yeah.

I hope they dont balls it up.

Fuckwin! I loved the first two.

I wonder if (hope) we'll get footage or screenies this week as it's GDC.

No Remedy Entertainment? Makes me worry.

They were only ever involved in PC development. All console development was carried out in-house by Rockstar, suggesting they'll be able to handle it.

I'm sure EA were desperate to get their hands on the rights to Max Payne 3 during their bidding for ownership of Take Two. That's a company you can guarantee would have fucked the series up.

But Remedy were the core developers which was developed for the PC and later ported to consoles by Rockstar. It may be the same publisher but things get a bit worrying when the developers change hands.

Tell me about it. Look how shit Thief 3 was compared to its predecessors. That series went downhill fast...lets just hope number 4 is in the works :>

Might crack the first one out for a blast. Loved the style of that game.

Not played the 2nd - Don't think it was out on any of my consoles at the time...

Jesus tittyfuckin christ; this is the ultimate win, and solidifies my need for a next gen console.

Hmm, looking into Vancouver, of note they have only developed Bully for the PS2 but the Rockstar brand hardly ever fails to deliver so I already have high hopes for this.

Hmm, wonder if this will be released around the same time of Remedys own "Alan Wake" would be interesting if it went head to head with it's fromer property.

As much as I like Max Payne, I think I would look forward to Alan Wake more. The Max Payne movie left a bad taste on the back of the tongue and considering it isn't the same developers. I am still looking forward to it but Alan Wake is something fresh.

Oh wow, Nathan Drake has really let himself go since the original Uncharted. What's that? Oh, sorry, this is actually Max Payne 3. So anyway, Rockstar has loosed the first screens of the latest game in its gritty, film noir inspired action series. Bruce Willis Max obviously got wrong directions from Google Maps and has ended up in Uncharted 2 -- or is it Resident Evil 5? No, it really is the next Max Payne. Can't say it's really the look we were expecting. How about you?

Those screens worry me. I'm probably looking for the wrong thing wanting a Max Payne similar to the other two though.

The key to Max Payne is the feel of it - the environments in the first two mirrored his own state of mind. This looks like, as they alluded to, Resident Evil 5 crossed with Die Hard (I'd say Uncharted 2 but I've no idea how it looks).

Hate to disagree with you, but the key to the first two (imo) was the film noir style it had to it when it came to the presentation of the plot, the way in which the narrative was played out as well as some awesome VA's.

If it keeps these three things intact, but just change the setting, then it should still feel the same.

Plus bullet time jumping down a hill backwards with two uzi's shooting should be a laugh.

Say what now?

I agree the film noir style did have a big impact and needs to be kept but it wouldn't have worked even with all of that had we been presented with lush outdoors like we're seeing.

Oh yes.
