Need some tips on scoring strategies.

[Note: I’m currently playing with a young team (average rating for starters is maybe 66 or 67) in the nPower Championship.]

I just switched from regular to professional difficulty, because regular was getting too easy to be fun. However, I find that on professional, my old strategy for scoring isn’t working. On regular, I used to just pass-pass-pass-pass like crazy, either up the middle or along the wings, until I got the ball into the box, then I’d dribble slightly and shoot at close range. But on professional, I’m finding that the AI defence shuts me down easily before I can get anything into the box—and even when I do get something into the box, I get tackled before I can get a shot off (unless I shoot with my player’s back turned to the net—you can guess how well that works out…).

In desperation, I’ve switched to going up the middle and trying through balls (using a ‘standard*’ tactical formation with very high attacking support). This is giving me more scoring chances (though not many more goals), but I find that my defence in this new through-ball style has gone from rock-solid to absolutely horrible—and now I’m mostly losing (2-0, 1-0, 3-1, etc.), whereas with my old strategy, I wasn’t scoring on professional level but at least I was getting lots of draws!

So, I need some strategic help. What strategies/tactics should I be using to score (keeping in mind that my team isn’t great) without letting my opponents score two or three goals a game against me?

*Typical settings for me: Player Support 20, Support Range 5-8, Position Switch 15-20, Attacking style 5-7, Defensive line 2-5, Compactness 12-16.

OK, I'm starting to win more now. I'm in 7th place in the nPower Championship and in the semi-finals of the FA Cup (where I will face my first premiership side and probably take a serious beating. I'm just hoping I can lose by less than 3... :eek:hmy:).

For anybody else who finds themselves in my position (going up a difficulty level and suddenly cant' score), I can offer the following advice that's worked for me:

- Worry less about using possession to set up the perfect shot. Use possession to get the ball forward as fast as possible.
- Develop a tactical eye for gaps in the defence through which you can drive a through ball (especially if, like me, you didn't use through balls before).
- Don't attack from the sides as a deliberate strategy. If the ball happens to find its way to the sides in the madness of offensive play, you might just make something out of it, but just running up the side and passing into the box doesn't get much in the way of results.
- Take your corners short and fast. Two or three quick passes and then fire a through ball into the box before they can get organised. Chaos will ensue, often leading to a scoring opportunity or two.
- Take defence more seriously. When the opposition is on the counter (and there will be a LOT of counter attacks), don't panic and don't just assume that you'll get the ball back. Assume it's going to be really tough work to get the ball back and that it will take complete concentration and a calm, organised approach. Use team pressure.

If anybody wants to add more advice or correct me where I"m wrong (I'm only a professional-level player!), that would be great.

Don't forget to vary crosses (height) by double or triple pressing the cross button. Another "trick" is using the L2 trigger to aim passes and shots with the arrow.

Actually, I could use some more advice with this. So far, I've had absolutely no luck with crosses--every one just gets headed away by the opposition defenders. How do you actually score with crosses???

Also, another attacking tip for newbs like me playing with a low-skill team: low through-balls are all about the positioning. Unless you've got an absolutely clear line to your target man, it's worth the risk of a bit of dribbling in a crowded area to try and get directly behind the target, then fire the through-ball. Otherwise even crappy defenders will intercept it 99/100 times.

Oh, and another thing I've discovered: focus on defence in thier half. On professional level, the AI defence is generally just too good to get anything past them when they're in position. The best time to catch them is when they're just starting a counter-attack. Nick the ball off them in their half and go for a super-quick counter-counter. So far, I think about half of all my goals have come this way.

Key word once you start going up the difficulties is patience. Once you go above regular you have to wait for your oppotunities to pass into dangerous areas in the final 3rd, especially if the AI has 6-7 men in front of the ball.

I find passing the ball (on the ground) from side to side often opens up space and dependent on your skill level a trick or two can often open up a gap. The other thing you will need is pace, this is crucial get the fastest player that you can need to get someone around 90 (the higher the better) Even strikers with poor shot accuracy and ratings should be considered. So for example Bance while he is pretty poor can score hat trick after hat trick if you use him correctly and by correctly I mean only sprint when you are through on goal.

If you have a CF with good reaction try to tripple cross it (ground cross).... it works best if you have a speedy winger who can cross when he's almost in the same line as the last defender.

When crossing... Once the ball is in mid air, use the Manual Aim and Shoot button. I find this is much better than just using Shoot ( usually just bounces of the player's head and over the bar )

Play 1-2 as many times as possible. Even on the wings, it helps you advance 2 players and create space.

Also, decide your play-style and support it with proper tactics

If you want quick direct attacks and counter-attack, use high player support, wide support range and prefer attacking from the wings. When you gain possession, look for the pass on the wing, or towards the striker if he has space.

If you want to build up your attack slowly and dominate possession, use lower player support, attack through middle and narrow support range. Play with short passes and use as many players as possible.

The goals will come if you find a play style and work on the advantages and avoid playing in a way that will cancel your tactical approach. For example, having low player support in your tactics and keep trying long through passes, will end up giving up possession, or have the ball with one player in the opponents half and no other players nearby to support him

Here's my trick...I notice Ai needs more time to work the field and score, so I reduce the match time giving them only one option...either dance or go for goal.
It works for me, I play 10mins on superstar
Easiest way to score; beat them on the counter attack, dispossess them and give an up-through pass to your poacher striker(always have one).

I personally would start with a one guy attack, it's kinda a bait...rather lure. He draws the heat, exposing the free space for the guy I put in motion
When you run, never lose awareness of a teammate, so you could have an option when boxed in.

For a lesser player, create distance by running to the sides...as in don't run a straight line
