Alive in the superunknown
I've just had a blast from the past and can't quite believe just how good the older PES games are. I got the most play out of 1&2 and I just couldn't stop playing them.
Even though you know the games had no licenses (especially back then) and poor elements such as commentary, sound effects and menu presentation, this never took anything away from the gameplay and what was happening on the pitch. These days, the whole experience pisses you off so much that you've had enough after one or two games.
I've figured out why it used to feel so good to score...
When you play PES now, there seems to be a ridiculous and unlimited amount of chances on goal, where you either feel cheated, or that the result is undeserved. Usually some horrendous AI glitch makes the most bizarre things happen which leaves you annoyed and frustrated, and you score so frequently that it loses any meaning or satisfaction value.
Back then, you barely had any chances on the goal because the games seemed much tighter defensively, and you actually had to plan your attacks rather than running around and hoping for the best. You had to wait for a space to have a chance of scoring. If the chance paid off, the feeling would be amazing, and even if it didn't - you'd be pressing and pressing for another opportunity. This element is no longer part of the game and it's just so sad. The direction of the game just seems all wrong nowadays.
I always have faith that the next pes will be amazing, but from what I've seen so far of 2009, it's looking like a rehash of 08. As long as they bring back more of a classic pes feel (gameplay wise), there will be something missing yet again. They are focusing too much on the pointless things now, like signing superstars etc. The things that made these games great were nothing to do with the surroundings of the game. It was what happened in the gameplay itself,l and they seem to have lost that vision.
I could go on for ages and raise other points as to why these games are better, but will leave it at that for now. Discuss.
