PES 2008 > the Pros and Cons

Kevthedrummer

Alive in the superunknown
Ok, I've given the game a good hour or so, and not totally sure how I feel about it yet. There are many pros and cons at the moment, and I've made this thread so we can all write up the pros and cons for people who potentially want to buy the game but are unsure what to expect. The reviews are misleading and either lean one way or the other, so I think having the positives and negatives lined up, it will be easier measure.

I have installed it to the HDD and run the game on a 32" widescreen SD tv. This probably decreases the quality of the game a lot but surely konami should target every user?

PROS VS CONS
Classic PES gameplay
VS
Crippled at times by slowdown
Really nice close up graphics
VS
unclear at a wider angle
Nice facial animations
VS
Strange and rather
poor running animations
Commentary a lot better
VS
Really bizzare weak
pitch patterns
VS
Hurts your eyes, really
hard to focus
VS
Very little difference
between day and night
VS
The game should have been delayed
to fix the slowdown.
VS
Slowdown is bad.

the sound effects are dreadful i.e the refs whistle.

but the master league looks better than ever.

the lack of stadia is annoying

but the stadia in the game are stunning.

Not trying to gloat but is the slowdown only a real issue with the PS3. I played PES again in Virgin today and I only noticed it on a corner once.

But the running animations of the players off the ball are so weird. The run with their chests out all the time. Realistic sometimes, but even when there's no goal threat or anything :S

OK clear instructions

1. Install game data first.

2.log out of the game go to the screen settings in the ps3 XMB (main menu) set the screen resolution to 720 rather than 1080 (HD TVS ONLY)

LOAD UP GAME- and thats should clear you problem.

sorted

there's a MAJOR slowdown on Xbox Live when playing PES 2008, I think it may be because the servers are just up and running(I hope that's why)

you never mentioned the edit in the cons either? I suppose the face scan is a nice bonus-if you have an Xbox Live Vision camera/Eyetoy.

Better commentary? You saying Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson are a better duo than Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking? And not only that, everytime I start a game Jon Champion goes "They've had extra training sessions, they may have complained but it might pay off, the manager is a real workaholic", what commentators say shit like that?

The goalkeepers are absolutely terrible, has no-one else noticed this?

The biggest con is that this is the seventh installment of a game, they've had seven chances to get it right and PES4 and PES5 were the closest things to being right and with PES6 and 2008, they've taken a step back, with gameplay that is.

PES4 was absolutely horrible.

And any commentary is a billion times better than the exact same dumbass crap we've had for four installments.

Dot Cotton and Pauline Fowler are better than Brackley and Brooking ffs.

I blue myself
The gameplay is poor - responsiveness of players is very poor, even those with immense skill. The slowdowns in frame rate occur regularly - both in normal play and in cut scenes - rendering the game incredibly annoying to play. Editing is extremely poor - I don't care about boots, but kits, stadiums and PES Shop special features are all either extremely limited or non-existent.

I could easily, and I mean easily, write a detailed explanation of why this game is terrible, but quite frankly, it's already wasted several hours of my life today and doesn't deserve anything else from me.

If you have a PS3, do not buy this game. Either buy it on another system (assuming they aren't just as bad) or just curl up in a ball and cry for 12 months as I plan to. Call this an overreaction, but I really feel that Konami should be ashamed of themselves.

You bring up some good points Señor Cranie, I may just be in denial. Hopefully an update will help some issues. I personally haven't found many problems with the frame rates during games :/

I agree with martin_cranie...I'm actually disappointed with the game. It looks nothing like PES5 or PES6. I use the pc version (can't be bothered to buy a playstation just for PES yet), and now they've switched from a 'playstation feel' to a 'xbox feel' of the game. They don't use the playstation joystick configurations anymore but the xbox's. My computer surpasses the requirements, but the game still slows down sometimes. I think I might just skip this edition of PES, and see what they bring out next year:(.
