Anyone try playing as a single player in regular games?

I mean the other day me and 3 mates played with liverpool in the Champions league on top player
We used Gerrard (me), Torres, Keane and Kuyt
we made to the last 16 of the CL playing some awesome games...It's a great experience and the freedom you posses is amazing!
People should give it a shot!

i have been very impressed with how different each player feels, this has always been one of the strengths of the series where as last years every player felt the same. Yesterday amauri turned a defender and it was uncanny how realistic it was. The shooting animations of players such as del piero are fantastic.

(PS3 version)

I'm almost done with my first ML season in top player with Mallorca (picked up PESfan option file) and so far I'm really enjoying the game. There are a few things though that are driving me nuts sometimes.

-Sometimes the players hesitate or falls on a track too much (Loss of control) . I feel like i have to hold super cancel (R1 and R2) most of the time to fully control my players. This has been the case in previous PES's but i feel like it's bugging me more this time around :p.

-Corners and free kicks. The players taking these kicks sit in a trance after taking the shot or cross. On a free kick if ball bounces of wall he just sits there for 2-3 seconds and is unresponsive. On corners same thing. He takes it and then sits there for 3 seconds or more (Sometimes causing an offside if by a chance the ball heads back his way) This again has been part of the PES series and I think should have been already fixed.

- I want to kill the refs sometimes. I've gotten REDs that are just ridiculous! Not even last man! Coming from the side, I get ALL BALL, the opposing player trips over my foot and i get a RED on the FIRST challange (first foul as well) of the game 15 minutes in. Konami have to code this to ONLY be red on last man and everything else is Yellow. Or anything from the back is ONLY red if its in the last 10 minutes of the game and you are down (revenge tackles). It can't be too hard. Enough of the senseless REDs in the middle of the field or on the sidelines. Especially from the side!
This has cost me 2 games :(.

Aside from these negatives I really love the gameplay and the new feel of the game. I love how they removed the godly body balance abilities. Being able to just muscle through everyone. The goals aren't repetative at all and teamwork aspect of the game is perfect.

I also own fifa and I just can't get into it after playing PES. It's the same thing every year. Fifa feels toooo repetative (same goal almost every time). I hope PES catches up in presentation and graphics though :p.

To all PES players in the world,

After playing only 2 weeks in this great game I've got some feelings that I want to share with you:

*first of all I have read that some of you think that there are some issues that have influence on the (so called) negative aspects of the game. Of course !! There will be always some imperfections (shortcomings), because it is 2008 A.D. not the 2020 A.D. so please do not write that PES lacks in some gameplay aspects. Let's be more tolerant to the game that we all love.

*secondly I want to say that I am impressed with all the various performance referring to different players and their types of play. It is just wonderful to look how these guys move on the field, how they shot, tackle, jump etc. I have been playing this game since ISS and I must say that 2009 version is the most realistic football game we can get. gameplay has changed a lot and I am sure that some of you can see the difference.

*thirdly we must remember about the graphics. It is great. I am sure that on ps2 it sucks, but let's face the reality - ps2 era has ended. I have not played on the xbox and ps3 so I cannot comment these versions but I am sure that graphic quality is very good. I am playing on the PC version on my notebook (800x640, medium quality). It is just fantastic - rain, afternoon matches (really enjoy these ones), night matches, replays are just great !! I have nothing bad on the graphics quality in this one.

*BAL mode is wonderful also. If some of you are complaining that you are waiting 30 mins after you receive a direct pass, just pres 2xR2 (on ps pad) and you will receive it faster :). I have not played a lot in this mode, but after few matches must say it is impressing. just waiting for another versions of PES where it will be upgraded. I agree that KONAMI should make seperate game for this mode, cause it could be a great profit for them

*Champions League mode - no comments, besides that it is the best mode KONAMI did in their career. I think that some of creators has played in CL patches :D of the previous versions.

In the end I want to say that what we are dealing with the greatest game in the history and comparing this game to FIFA is just pointless, cause PES has no even competitors.

Here is my feedback after 1 week of playing versus AI and Human players:

First I would like to mention that I am not new to this...I have been playing Football games since the Atari times, towards Kick off, Sensible Soccer on Comrode, FIFA 94-96, Winning Eleven and PES. I have also played FIFA09...

My verdict is that KONAMI has done a good job this year. PES now feels more realstic and favours tactical play verus 'catch me if you can' play...Kids or people who do not understand real football will not like PES2009.

Ofcourse there are some improvements areas: I list them here:

1. I would like PES 2010 to be focused more on the “Goal” Area. So I would like to see:
a. Enhanced Goal Keeper AI….GK jump and catch/punch high balls specially in Corners….GK punches the ball to safe spots depending on his GK skills so the ball does not need every time to go to another attacker if it bounces off him…This is becoming the cause of most goals in 2009 version.
b. Put Manual GK control back to allow pros to use their skills.
c. More GK animations specially in the saves
d. Make several net designs depending on the stadium….so the net shall be different in Soul stadium compared to Anfield

2. I like PES being a fast/action game compared to Fifa (normal speed) but I still think the PES 2009 still need to be a bit slower. This will also give the chance to enhance the graphics (textures)

3. Let me position my shots. I am not asking to make shooting easier than now but at least give me the opportunity to select shots direction (low/right corner vs. high/left) now most shots go either to the middle or a straight line in the direction the player is facing..

4. Stop making Computer controlled players make slides that can cause penalties. In other words, improve their AI. I do not want to get punished from their mistakes.

5. Work more on AI of the referees…still far from reality

6. Fatigue impact should be increased to add more realism. A player should be punished when using a lot of runs with guys like (Ronaldo, Messi) so he can not use them for the whole 90 minutes versus a passing/tactical strategy…a step toward tactical football.

7. Add the Random option in the stadium selection so when I replay with the same teams, the stadium get changed. The same should apply to weather/time/Season.

8. Licensing…Please KONAMI give up a small part of your profit to get us this…It is so frustration when I buy the game and find Chelsea wearing blue pajamas.

9. Add more flexibility to create tournaments (KONAMI Cups)…Give us more options to create different types of tournaments. What you have now is like 10 years ago and which is Cup (elimination type) or group stage then knock out (has to be 8/16/32 teams) or a league. I would suggest the following:
a. As used in so many competitions around the world, Please add Two ladder elimination systems (Winning and losing ladders)
b. The numbers of teams per group can chosen
c. The numbers of matches played within a group can be chosen (Home versus Home/Away)
d. The number of qualified teams per group can be chosen
e. Away goals counted or no?
f. How about a 3 stage cup Group/group/knockout so if 32 teams were selected, it will be (32 (8 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 8)then next would be 16 in group stage similar to last stage and then 8 make I to knockout for example)

10. Enhance fans support so they do not just repeat phrases. This is annoying.

11. The turfs should not be like a carpet where all areas in the field have the same look (middle areas and goals area should have more damaged/uncomfortable base)

Finally KONAMI did not do a good job in online mode...You know we can sue you for this....You were lucky that you have such loyal base...and finally becarful FIFA is coming closer and closer

Best PES I have played so far..

-Slower pace
-More passing
-Sweet long balls/crosses (at last the ball can slow down now)
-No more human tanks on the pitch. Slow technical players are now equally useful. This must be my first football videogame that I can actually use players like Raul, Morientes and not have them as back up of some fast runner with no actual knowledge of football. Brilliant balancing of stats.

I would agree with the above poster. I concede a lot of goals from GKs inaction in the box, especially in corners. Red cards are ridiculous, especially when AI teamate does a tackle on the player you have already taken care of. Other than that and the online probs, gameplay is deeply satisfying and addicitive. FIFA despite, its phenomenical flow and randomness feels shallow and monotonous in comparison.

-GOALKEEPERS are tweaked .. for at least 10 years of PES&WE experience, maybe the best goalkeepers. IN many occasions They can hold the ball instead of parrying..

-No more one-man teams.. Ronaldo takes it and runs to the byline , no one can take the ball, even touch the ball while he is dribbling in every situation.. THAT is COMPLETELY over..

i disagree with you about the "one man teams" as the opposition goalkeepers are the new one men teams. Ive played every pes, not used to loosing, but on pes 09 my master league record is dire, my past 7 games have all been draws, its simply impossible to score.

the game hasnt really been updated, defending is incredibly hard thanks to the new AI; i often find berbatov in defence, ferdinand in midfield and wes brown upfront regardless of how i set up my formation.

i liked how one could dribble with messi/ronaldo, not because it was easy, but because it was often one of the only ways to move the ball up the field as playing a passing game rarely worked and continues to not work; aerial balls dont work, full stop, end of discussion; through balls often end up as passes and passes are often played as through balls which is infuriating.

The shooting has not been tweaked, it has been attacked with a hammer, comments such as "no longer floaty" should be replaced with "no longer not floaty" as most of my shots scream over the bar where they used to zip into the back of the net.

the graphics are a step up, however i often encounter matches where it it so horrifically dark any team in a blue kit is hard to spot.

i might enjoy this pes if i could score, or dribble, or do anything i associate with what makes pes fun. saying that i still own the game, and am trying my hardest to master it, simply because playing fifa is like watching 22 seventy year olds play footie!

It is interesting to see how different opinions can evolve about the same game....I found crossing a very dangerous technique now..and I can make chances by just passing....I agree shooting became more difficult which I like as you have to be smart in selecting the right player at the right speed with the right foot...I am starting getting used to it..last night I scored with Lampard from outside the penality area...you need patience and practice

I think this is the best PES ever...reminds me about the Winning Eleven 3 when it came out

i agree, you have to be patient with your shots. you have to wait for the right moment. was playing Champs League with my mate as Liverpool the other day. Won 3-1 at the bridge in the first leg but were 2-1 down to them with them all over us in the 2nd leg. feeling the pressure we make a break passing around the area, got Gerrard on the edge with 4 defenders around to break it out his feet and placed it in off the post. Felt like a proper intense Champions League moment! i feel placing your shot (r2) works alot better for you in this game rather than in other games. first time iv regularly used it tho in any other pes.

Major gripes

I too agree that its a huge step up from PES2008 but there are a few things that annoy the living hell out of me

- Idiotic computer takes over your player e.g. the classic 'stop to look at that pretty ball over the top' even if you're holding down run. Allowing the defender to nip in (whereas if you kept running without pause you would have got the ball).

- Computer always wins headers, usually via positioning. Even hitting super cancel (R1+R2?) I can't reposition my player. This drives me and my flatmate completely insane

- Players do pathetic headers instead of volleying. Wouldn't be an issue if it was different controls but theres only one shoot button...

- Too much emphasis on balls over the top, and conversely through passes on the deck are too toned down (vs 2008 which was the complete opposite - through passes for everything, balls over the top always too low trajectory and too fast).

- Scripted 'cheating' mode when the computer goes a goal down, or is near the end of match / end of half. You literally see the computer gaining extra pace and doing tricks like mad. FFS this is totally stupid and feels like cheating. By all means make them make better decisions, sharper passing etc. but don't suddenly make them sprint 20km/h faster and be able to out muscle all of your players all of the time. I've seen DEFENDERS DO CRYUFF TURNS INSIDE THEIR THIRD. Still, it does seem not as out of hand as in 2008

- Starting master league team is still waaaaaaaay too crap for it to be enjoyable until you finish season 1 and get some decent players. Now that the transfers are a lot harder to pull off, combined with the harder shooting controls, its even more frustrating. I resorted to 4-5-1 and playing for draws to get through season 1. Also due to the crappyness of your team you're actually punished if you do well and get promoted, becuase your team is WAAAAAAAY too bad to put up any kind of competition in the top flight.

i have played the game for three weeks solid and have loved it but i am just wondering weather the cracks are starting to show. I am debating weather this is a good enough football simulation. A few days after buying the game i made a decision to only use manual passing(from back passes to long balls) as i feel the default passing with the x button is pathetically easy and no thought has to be put into it, it also makes the game to easy and feels like an arcade pile of wank. I love the game using manual and there is so much more depth in terms of gameplay, some of the passes i have made have been astounding in realism and the challenge of the game is brilliant when only using manual. Shooting is to easy with good players still and looks unnatural in some cases and goals get repetitive. This sounds more negative then i mean it to but i think its a good reflection of the game that i feel able to criticise it as i know the strong points of the game really are strong. last year i convinced myself it was good for the first week as i couldn't face the truth but i traded in in for the ps2 version a week after buying it. I still feel that the game is somewhat back to its best

A quick tip, and is probably mentioned somewhere that I don't feel like looking :) - but a tip that might help the game look a little more colorful. Got the tip from Evo-Web for 2008.

Screen Settings:

+6 for RGB, +3 for Brightness.

Voila - if you thought the pitch looked beautiful before...look at it now. Stunning!

I finally got to play PES 2009 this week and here's what I thought about it.

At first I thought it was similar to a FIFA 2008 with more Responsiveness and better Defending.

But after a few games with my brow, I think it could be the best version of the PES series. Alike the PS2 versions, PES09 haves something that the more you play it, the more you like it.

But alike the PS2 versions, PES09 is the game that makes you think "this would be a truly great game IF it had more Animations, and more Directions, and more Stats".

I have barely played PES09, but with some 9 to 12 games played, I think it is just as good as the PS2 versions, Different, but just as good. A huge improvement over PES 2008, although I wouldn't say it is an "evolution" from the PS2 versions.

I'm still waiting for those New Animations, for the Update on the 8 Directional Movement, and for the much needed New Stats. Can we expect such things from PES 2010??

I'm loving it but need more from this game after 10years.

The game modes are superb minus the ability to put other teams c into the competitions, I understand that they may not use the German league but what is the sense of adding an editable league if you cant use it?

There is also more freedom about PES now the ball movement is less on rails as they say and it really opens the game up.

The tricks are fucking hopeless. At first I was concerned that they would be too easy but instead it's harder moreso because I play with the analogue stick in hope that one day we will have more than 8 directions.

Likes:
-game modes
-editting
-gameplay
-goalkeeping
-player individuality

hates:
-animations, animations, animations
-game speed (too fast imo)
-player physics (collision, momentum etc.)
-tricks
-super dribblers Messi and co.
As I said I can probably play this for a year but I'm expecting big things next year.

Well i loved PES 09... especially the BAL mode.. god its addictive..
Last in time i give it a 10/10
Graphics are great!
The AI is pretty decent.. i find most games the same most of the time.. but there are situations/things the AI does,, that i stayed with my mouth open..
THE GUY THAT DESCRIBES THE MATCH IS FUCKING ANOYING!!!!!!! FFS
Also they could add more teams.. but i think that will come with the update.
Also....tons of players are missing,, hopefully we get them on the update.
There are some bugs and stuff... but all games got em.
way better than PES08
