Set your joystick to "Controller 2" under the Controller tab in PES2009's settings, and leave the "Controller 1" slot empty (not assigned to any controller). That should do the trick.

How can you play with both keyboard and a controller?
Maybe player 1 with keyboard and player 2 with controller?

it's still not working.
Hmmm... It works fine on my pc :erm:... With that setting I can navigate the menus with only the keyboard (because the keyboard is for player 1), but player 2 can still join the game using the controller.

Well if you set your controller to "Controller 1" you can use BOTH the keyboard and the controller to control player 1. You can even move your player with the keyboard while shooting/passing/etc with the controller and vice versa, but that would be quite awkward :).
If you set your controller to "Controller 2" and leave the "Controller 1" slot empty, you can only use the keyboard to control player 1, and only the controller for player 2.
@ben23: I just tried it and it works... Dunno what's wrong with your settings...

I've been using an XBox controller for windows and I've not had that problem. It might be down to you using an adapter and what the game searches for as the primary control device.

On another old game I can't remember I used to start the game with only the keyboard attached and then when it got to the controller screen plug in the game pad and then it'd appear on the control select screen and you could move it either way.

Please in reference to the above post, my PES settings is to the keyboard becoming the master controller of player one whilst just one of my twin USB gamepad is working for controller two. I want a way to reverse the setting in such a way that the keyboard won't be controlling the player one but both my controllers will be in charge. One controller for player 1 and the other for player 2. Now because the keyboard is for controller 1 if I want to play against errm the PC unless I use the keyboard whilst my gamepad is there and it has even been connected.
Please help me because my controller is just there without me being able to use it.
