Yesterday PES5 'clicked'. Or, more accurately, I did. Like many here I've played and been loyal since '96 but PES5 very nearly made me give up on it as a lost cause. God I hated it all weekend, even at 18.00 yesterday I was really angry after a 3 star England 0 - 1 Slovenia beating. I was so resolved to take it back but the reviews/posts that insisted I should stick with it drove me on.

I sat back and tried to clear my mind of all that was PES4. Literally tried to 'format' myself and just think football, not Playstation football.

After counting to ten and taking a deep breath I started my own Euro 2005. I got chucked in with Scotland, Germany and Finland. First up was Scotland (No!). I changed England to 3-5-2 + A2 which is like a diamond with a bloke in the middle. I played proper football, didn't pressure too much, waited for chances to occur on their own, didn't force it. Used space properly and remained patient, only used R1 when REALLY necessary. Other than that I used my team mates.

On 70 mins, Scotland fcked it up and Defoe broke free at the same time. A 40yd dash ensued and from the top point at which the d-line meets the box, unleashed a rare shot on target. Top left, 1 -0. Sweet Jesus it was good. I won.

I used the same approach with Germany. 3 - 0! They did concede 2 pens in first 15mins.

Finland beat me 1 - 0.

QF's - Spain. 1 - 0!

SF's - Holland. 2 - 0!

Final. Ukraine. 1 - 0! Champions!

I cannot describe my happiness. Please please stick with it, it will happen.

I agree. In the Master League i was doing rubbish, but simply because i was rushing and not creating chances properly. In friendlies where there is no pressure i was playing on the same difficulty level and winning. give it time and patience and you'll be rewarded. (also- i played Germany earlier and they gave away two penalties for tripping in the box!)

Totally agree!! i also already played some historical matches which bring the happyness inside!!

but sometimes i want too smash the ps2 through the window so yeah, that's football, that realism...

Great post :)

You are very good at describing the truely emotional times when the game just "clicks". I couldn't agree with you more. I used to rock da house on 6 stars in pes4, and now I can hardly score any goals on 5 stars with the danish national team. But as soon as Graversen put in a 25 yard screamer, I was hooked. What a relief that those far ranged shots can finally sail in. Some people say it's to easy to score from long range, i strongly disagree. It's perfect.

I'm in the transition from absolute unadulterated anger to thinking "oh, it's nice". I was the same all weekend, thinking the game is just not that good, but slowly I've started to dominate games, and when I get it right I bombard the opponents goal with shots. Shooting still isn't completely mastered, although I have scored a few beauties, one a Robinho "drive" volley from 35 yards over Valdes' head. Stick with it.

Same here- i'm giving it time and not overplaying it. Slowly and surely...

I stuck with it even if it did make me suicidle after 300+ undefeaten games on 6* PES4 I was gettin smashed on 5* 3-0 4-0 etc on PES5, so I went to 1* AC Milan v Inter Milan, won, then 2* then 3* and played on each level until I won, now i'm regular 1-0 2-0 winner on 6*.

Haven't had too many transitional problems to be honest but I LOVE the way this game plays. It just seems so much more 'real'. But to be honest, I haven't played too many games. Still tangled in my EditFest...

yesterday had a bad spell drawn or lost moste of my masters league games but today well that's a different story beat all the teams I played including hammering real madrid 6-0 take that galacticos. One miniute you'r up the next you'r down pes5 is much more realistic than any of the other pes games and I can't wait to have my next match who knows what will happen.

yeah, i would have been too, but this year finally downloaded an option file instead. Just been playing my 'mate' at Pro Evo 5. Highlight-scoring a free kick past him, lowlight losing 3-0 to him. still enjoyed it tho'.

I like it but there's a few of things I can't forgive. First there's the referee, I get about 30 fouls a match just for going shoulder to shoulder so I can't play a physical game anymore, everytime I look like winning a tackle fairly I get penalised, very annoying, more so when they score from the resulting freekick...

I'm not a fn of the tweaks on the dribbling system either, even Ronaldinho is sluggish and casual on the ball.

The passing and shooting are now spot on in my opinion anyway...

I know exactly what you're talking about. played it last couple of days and couldnt get to grips with 3 star master league at all. Then as you so rightly said it 'clicked', starting moving the ball into space, playing across the park and most importantly getting the through ball just perfect (oh, what a feeling that is!).

So great having half-term to play this game to death, loving it!

I'm not sure if it's clicked yet. My 3 star Master League I'm winning EVERY game 1-0... In my last match I had 67% posession but couldn't score! Just got a lucky header from a corner. I'm still waiting to score more than two in a game.

Edit: It's half-time and I'm 2-0 up! Had 69% posession, being incredibly patient. Only going forward when I know it'll succeed.

It's clicking..!

I was going to start a thread with this question but I don't think it warrent's on.So the question is how long do you see your self playing the we-pesgames?Looking back in years to come with fond memories or having a heart attack when you'r 70 smashing in a 40yder against you'r grandkid's.

This game is so amazing. I'm just loving it. I feel 3* is a little slow and the AI is too defensive that it wont take risks and defends like wall. But it 4* and 5*, the game is much more entertaining because AI is more attacking which also creates opportunities for us. This way 3* would be good for multiplayer than singleplayer. But 4* and 5* are just so exciting.

I have to admit I have been in love with it since my 1st game, I was expecting it to be different and to require a bit of adjustment, and it is. I feel the gameplay is probably as close o real football as you could have on the PS2, and adore it. I played my first couple of matches on 3* and got varied results, normally tight wins. I just played my first 5* with United against Liverpool, and squeezed a 1-0 win. Lovely.
