Got the game yesterday here in Australia, and I must say I've enjoyed it more than any other previous PES release. And there wasn't any settling in period; it was footballing heaven from the get-go.
The new animations are outstanding, in particular the shooting and passing ones. The European-style pace suits me perfectly. In recent times, I couldn't play PES4 more than 4 games in a row without it starting to feel like footballing pinball, whereas the fluitdity and realism of PES5 makes me want to play non-stop!
Gameplay-wise, shooting is definately improved. I've scored some absolute howitzers with Adriano. The loopy shots found in PES4 have been replaced by rising, scorching drives.
Passing feels more deliberate and controlled. You really have to work to retain the ball in midfield, but there's no end of satisfaction when you put together a string of 15+ passes and gradually pull the opposition out of shape before making the incisive move which results a stylish, replay-worthy goal. Long passing is now not just there for the sake of it; you can really change the flow of a match with a well-timed switch of play or raking diagonal ball.
Dribbling is more challenging than ever, and I feel this is a good thing. If you're the type of player that is obsessed with winning games using mainly individual skills, you probably won't enjoy PES5. I've found that is very possible to beat 2-3 men, but the reason I do it is only in the interest of opening up extra space to play a killer pass or switch play to the other wing.
The first touch and ball control system is superb - once you adapt to it. At first it seems your players control the ball like drunken elephants, but then you realise that with subtle manouevers of the pad/stick/R2, plus good timing, you can evade challenges with grace and style. I've found that as you perfect your first touch, midfields don't seems anywhere near as congested as they did at first.
Overall, I feel this is the best installment of the franchise yet, although I can totally understand where people's complaints are coming from. I think certain types of players will perfer this game, while others may prefer PES4/PES3, which is perfectly fine. But for me, this is as close to virtual footballing perfection as it gets.
