i must say with the first touches however, and i cant be the only person to notice this, you send a long ball at a player, full speed, and he'll bring it down easily, on his chest or with his boot, you give him a 5 yard pass, and he struggles to keep it with in a yard of him. that aint realistic at all. anyone whose played football knows its harder to control a 40yard lofted pass than a 5 yard lay off.

It is easy to control a long ball becuase you (the human playing the game) have enough time to react and take control of the ball. Whereas when you make a 5-yard pass, you should react immediately when the player change happens (not sure whether you use manual player change settings or semi-automatic).

I feel, although the ref gives out more fouls than before, that he's not quite harsh enough. I hardly ever get even a yellow card (albeit i don't tackle that much in the first place) and neither does the computer. I've seen the computer get 1 or 2 yellow cards in 10 games. Hardly realistic.

The AI against me gets 2 yellow cards in 3 games on an average. It also depends on what kind of game you play. You keep passing and going forward, AI plays safe and you might make a mistake and lose the ball. Try using the build-up style game, Serie A style. If you have the ball and the AI player is close to you and you keep the ball, play tricks, change direction etc. AI would commit a cardable foul. On the other hand, if you keep passing or long balling (EPL style), AI may not get an opportunity to commit a foul and it does not need to commit a foul. So, I feel, we should play in such a way that AI commits fouls. Keeping the possession is one such way.

I dont think that konami have really taken the series forward! The referees are unrealistic and so is this amount of chances that you miss in the game! I control the games, have at least 16 shots on goal but only about 4 or 5 or target and rarely any goals but yet the computer makes 5 shots on goal maximum but they maybe have two on target and both those two are goals that they didn't deserve! I would call it realism if it happened the odd time but this happens nearly every game! I hate the way konami have made this game far too defensive! The AI always have piles of players just lying there in their own half and this happens every game! Every team i have came up against plays the exact same style and feels no different! This game does have some good points but i honestly have to say that this is a poor showing from konami!

it sucks

on ps 2 it sucks
as did pe4 on ps2

i just hope the pes5 is better on xbox than ps 2 , the amount of fouls is awful.

the ability to get passed people isnt there on the ps2 version and i just couldnt get used to it

Hate to break it to you but it's exactly the same on xbox.

Though I feel that the shooting and passing is nigh on perfect, Kaka having the touch of a rapist is something that doesn't sit too well with me.

It's an improvement but the gamplay and most animations are too much like PES4's in my opinion, I prefer the demos gamplay.

I also prefer the demos gameplay....dont know why, it just feels a bit different

Got the game today, played about 10-12 matches so far, of which half of them were online I guess...

In those games, I've already had about 4-6 goals which I scored by just blasting the ball at goal from 25 meters or so... hardly realistic... unless I'm some kind of long-distance shooting genius...
Also doesnt really feel as special as it did in PES4 when a ball like that goes in...

The best players in the world can't receive a pass without looking like a drunken baboon: too slow, and just pathetic really...

The faces of most players still look like shite, although some are pretty good.

Lag on Xbox Live. Hope they fix it with a patch again, but it shouldnt ahve been there in the first place...

Difficult to do a shot-cancel on xbox due to button lay-out. it was better in pro evo 4.

I used to be very good at free kicks in pes 4... now I suck... I blame the game cause that's the kind of guy I am: it's never my own fault.
People said the free kicks would be easier in 5.

Anyway, I WILL keep at it and become better, dont worry... and I'll probably grow to love it... but that doesnt change the fact that those 25 meter blasts go in too easily, and that the receiving of a pass sucks. I'm just an amateur football player, but even I am not that clumsy while receiving a ball...

So far my first impressions... I'll be doing some free kick practice now...

This game is too simular to PES4 and trying to master the first touch is a pain in the arse. But its still a good game and it has the real celtic jersey which makes it better than PES4, but only just.

yea i see your point but its still a bit stupid. when you play real football you have more time to react to the long ball than a 5 yard pass but it doesnt make it easier to control. thats stupid. you can play me 5 yard passes all day and i wont mis control them, but play me 60yard long balls all day long and the chances are i'll fuck a few up

A massive dissappointment, unrealistic.

Aerial throughballs run through to the GK 9/10

Players reactions are way to slow

Passing is complete rubbish only about half the time they get to the right player

Too hard to get shots on target, the players are so slow to shot that they've been closed down by the time they strike

If you try and shoot in the area it always deflects off a defender

The ref blows for a foul every 2 seconds

Offside rule is wrong, no daylight between offensive and defensive player they seem to think level is offside

I am still looking on the internet for the new rule where football is now a non contact sport as this game suggests.

Next time i'll go blockbusters and rent it before wasting my money. For the first time im gonna try Fifa coz this game is rubbish

My First Post, so don't throw the knives at me.

I have to admit this is the most disappointed PES Ive ever bought so far. Im glad to read that everyone else has the same issues and it's not just me thats adapting poorly to this one!!! I preferred the speed of PES4, I always play this game on WIDE view so that slows the game down anyway, so to play it on WIDE on PES 5 is just too slow.
The passing IS poor, I've noticed that the'yve improved the AI of the opponent {which is a good thing as PES4 was predictable}, but they've made you the player more vulnerable. I find when attacking, my team bunches together; when I defend I have all my back four compact {and NO I don't hold down Square or X or R1, and yes I have tweaked the settings in formation to stop them bunching together}. What really bugs me is {good example was when I was Portugal}, is I had Deco on the ball, he was blocked off from going forward against Iran, so I turned back to play to my midefiel man, and in turn he then through balled it to Ronaldo on the wing. I had pretty much the entire wing to run down as the through ball was made on the half way line, yet Iran's Left sided midfielder {who was on the half way line while Ronaldo was half way between the penalty box and half way line} caught me up and tackled me, this was when I was double tapping run with Ronaldo. Now if thats not realistic I dont know what is. Ive had Venezualan defenders out run Owen when sent clean through, I had Rooney beaten off the ball without getting a foul against China {erm a chinese bloke barjing Rooney to the floor.....nah}, and I find that WITHOUT presing close down, I have my other central defender {one I am not controlling} burst forward trying to tackle the oncoming attacker when Ive already gone towards him to tackle him. This then gives the attacker the option to through ball it to his partner in attack and he has a free run on goal.

Yeah, I wish they had improved the AI of your team-mates so they aren't dull witted. Sometimes one of my players stands still offside, not moving at all, as if he's day-dreaming!

Man, you must be newbie in PES too, not just newbie on the forums.

-Stop holding "X" that much, otherwise the "game will punish you". Guard the space and try to get the ball without fouls, and you'll see the difference. When was the last time you watched real football? Have you ever seen that players run to each other like they do in PES if you hold X??? Never... so LEARN how to do it without fouling.
Football is not non-contact sport, and ref gives advantage rule, which works excellent, but again, you can guard the ball, push players and "fight" for the ball without fouls, just stop using "X" and square to do it.

-Offside rule is great actually, you need to check what offside rule IS! (it has been changed "recently"). If you send a ball to a player who is in offside, but he does not receive it, then, the ref will not stop the game. Same is true if the player who is not participating in a attack but is in offside; the ref will not blow offside. However, as soon as the player in offside touches the ball, offside is called by ref.

-Player reactions are spot on, as in real life. Try holding R2 for capturing the ball in your feet, or hold R1 + direction to make a first touch. You need to get used to it since PES4 was very unrealistic for the reactions.

-Try to create a space and then shoot the ball. Can't shoot through the players, especially if the box is full. Players aren't slow, there is a thing called body weighting and it's VERY realistic in PES5. Players can't change directions just like that, they need to reweight their body (especially if you are sprinting).
Also, football is PASSING game, so create a good chance and you'll be able to make some brilliant shots and goals.
Don't SPRINT too much, football is slow paced. Take a time to build a good attack, watch the radar and your player positioning. Try different formations and tactics.

-Just because the game is A LOT harder and A LOT more realistic doesn't mean it's bad, on the contrary. This is real football simulator. PES4 is a joke compared to PES5 in terms of realism. From reactions to keeper, ball, etc...

Actually if you would have READ THE MANUAL of the game, you would know half of your "whinging points". It tells you in the manual not to hold X like before, for example.

Also it might be good idea to buy a guide for this game if you are having so much problems. Piggiback's guide is amazing, and you'll find out EXACTLY why the player reactions are as they are, why you need to build up a play, how to do it, etc... It has been developed with collaboration of people who created PES5 so it is quite amazing to learn all those things. After that, no question about it, you'll start appriciating this game.

Otherwise, go for FIFA, it isn't THAT bad; but I'm warning you, there's a lot of frustations with it, from framerate issues, graphics, to being very unrealistic. If you think through balls are bad in PES5, check FIFA 06 man, and you'll see whats called BAAAAAAAD. Shooting is WEAK AS, whilst keepers are absolutely unbeatable from distance, even short distance. Most goals are scored from rebouds and headers.
It's a good package and can be picked up and played whenever. But don't expect too much of it. It kept me entertained for few weeks and that's it. I recon FIFA 2005 was better game than 06. At least a lot more realistic. 06 feels like it's unfinished and rushed to be out.

Cheers.

Unless you found the "magic spots" in front of the penalty box in FIFa 2006, shoot from those "spots" and you'll score 100%, lol.

I too got frustrated, tired and bored of the game. However i switched my formation to 2-3-5 (yes you read that right) and I can now play free flowing attacking football even on 6-star Master League. I don't go foul crazy either. I wait for the perfect time to tackle, as you would in real life, play the ball up the park slowly, pass it around and wait for the opening. Then-bang-1-0 and you can build from there. Its great, and I now really love it. Might still buy the guide tho...

I think you are just a newbie that's why you were unable to enjoy this game. Try playing it with ur friends for a little while, if it doesnt suit you, go play FIFA 2006, that's an easier game. Don't worry, nobody will call you a loser, just a gamer with a litttttllleeee bit less taste.
