Why are you trying to open the max drive files? Just download them as they are, unzip and then copy them into your max drive.

Does anyone have the .bin/.cue files of this option file? A link would be fab - some of us don't have a max drive/Lost it :(

Check the Max Drive Help thread here and there is a link in there for the US compatible version - not in the first or last pages so you'll have to search for it, but it is a post by me (and possibly another one by someone else with the same link).
